i know nobody cares or can tell but meeeeee :3 but i redid all the rainbow room videos on monkeesmvs with the new encoding so they look extra nice :^)

some notes below if you're interested (it's very technical, i would only read if you actually care about video encoding stuff)

my current workflow, partially adapted from here, is:

get our source episode (1080p blu-ray remux)

clip around ~2 minutes of the song i want from the full episode, this is done in ffmpeg. i also overlay the subs in this step and crop out black bars

create avsPmod script that will resize our clip from 1080p to 720p

run this script through avs2yuv and a shit ton of x264 flags. this produces a 720p mp4 that's nicely encoded, but has no audio

use ffmpeg again to combine the audio from the source clip in step 2 and the encoded video from step 4

upload to tumblr :)

stuff that could be improved:

i could probably use avspmod to do everything in step 2 and cut out ffmpeg entirely? i'm just not super good with avs scripting

ALL OF STEP 4 😭 i still don't have an "ideal" set of x264 flags. literally what i did was download an already encoded video from tumblr, then opened it in mediainfo to see what flags THEIR encoder used. like i wanna learn x264 flags in general (i know the big stuff like bframes) but i just don't have timeeeee

related to the above step - determine if quality gain mostly stems from resizing 1080p>720p, or if x264 flags actually contribute. i just like to know this stuff. it's really interesting to learn that uploading a video is a two-step process -- 1 is actually uploading to the tumblr servers, 2 is tumblr running the uploaded video through their encoder before giving you the video that is actually shown in posts (this is that "video processing" message you get)

Why video bitrate matters

A lot of people don't seem to understand the importants of video bitrate when it comes to making videos. I will show you why it is in this guide. Video bitrate is essential for HQ videos. Not setting the right bitrate could leave you with a video in low quality, rather than the desired output. In short: The higher the bitrate, the better quality the video will be in. If the bitrate is low, the quality for the video will decrease. Higher bitrates tend to take up lots of storage space and generally take longer to render, but it is worth the wait. For example, when I record 4k 60fps videos at 90,000mbps or 90mbps (megabits per second), a 1 and a half hour long video can equal up to 55GB or more. If space is a concern for you, I recommend getting either an external HDD or a large capacity internal HDD and a HDD docking station in order to use the internal HDD. (The docking station is only recommended if you are using a laptop/have no more room for HDDs in your PC case). If you need to check what bitrate your video is, I recommend using the program Mediainfo which can be downloaded from here. Mediainfo is only for windows users. You can always check the video bitrate natively in Windows by right clicking the video file, selecting properties and then going into the "Details" tab. ffmpegで正しくRGB色空間を保持した "x264:ロスレス動画" をエンコードする方法

結論から言えば、とりあえず細かい事は無視してエンコ時にffmpeg本体へ渡す引数オプションである "-c:v libx264" を "-c:v libx264rgb" に変更するだけでOKです。

他にも細かい設定は有りますが、動画エンコーディングエンジンを通常の "libx264" からRGB動画のための "libx264rgb" に変更する事が何より重要です。これを設定して置かないと、他のオプション項目を幾ら弄っても、最終的にエンコードされて書き出される動画は全て強制的に「色空間がYUVの動画」となってしまいます。

この「色空間がYUVの動画」になったら最後、エンコ時の設定で "-qp 0" を指定してロスレス動画にしたとしても、書き出される完成動画は使われる色数の範囲が "RGB:16.16.16～RGB:240.240.240" のRGB色空間よりも幅が狭い色空間に固定化されてしまい、特に背景等の黒一色の部分が "RGB:0.0.0" では無く "RGB:16.16.16" の「濃灰色」になってしまいます。純白の "RGB:255.255.255" も同様に "RGB:240.240.240" の「明灰色」に変換されてしまうため、動画の色味が全体的にくすんだ様な印象を与えます。

とりあえず…

$ffmpeg -i [input.avi] -color_range pc -c:v libx264rgb -preset:v slow -qp 0 [output.mkv]

～みたいな感じでイイ感じの「x264のロスレスRGB動画」を書き出してくれます。が、デフォルトのYUV動画の時に比べてエンコ時間は増大しますし、出来上がりの動画のファイルサイズも1.7倍くらいになります。ここら辺は細かくプリセットの設定を弄ったりすればある程度までは改善出来るかと思いますが…いわゆる "PCエンコ" の限界でもあるので。可能な環境であれば「GPUエンコ」を試してみた方が良いかもしれません。

P.S. 尚、その動画が正しくRGB色空間を保持した動画かどうかを確認するためには、ffmpegを公式からDLした際に同梱されて来る "ffprobe" を使うと判別可能です。

～で動画の詳細な情報が確認できます。一般によく使われるマルチメディア情報ツールである "MediaInfo" では、YUV動画であっても表示される情報は同じになるため、正確に判別する事は出来ません。
