would love to turn people on to nz on screen, a free archive of new zealand and māori content with over 4500 titles!

the site is accessible in both english and te reo, and it includes over 500 films, 3000 tv series & specials, 2000 documentaries, as well as history series & specials, chat shows, musicals, lgbtq+ content, standup, children's shows, historic news & sports, and more :)

new zealand and māori filmmaking & content, particularly from before the late 2000s, can be exceptionally hard to track down and haven't been given the archival attention they deserve, so this is an amazing resource!

STUDYING THE REAL THING! and this is something i want to get better at, but i try and look at as many real comic examples as i possibly can and make sure i'm imitating it authentically. studying which colors they use as a halftone and which is a solid block of color, seeing how the ink is misaligned, seeing where the distressing tends to be. i feel i could be a bit more scrutinizing about these aspects, which is something i want to get better at!!!! but i think it's helped me more than anything!

How do you do that color thing? :0

With the opposite colors or whatever that was? How do you choose which colors to use so they’ll look different?

Assuming this is about trick colors (using desaturated colors to Look like a color that would be disorienting if I put it truly in there), I usually think about it as what's More of whatever color I'm aiming for.

Also, be aware that I'm Quite new to this, so I'm not exactly an expert, this is just my experience.

With the example here, you can see it's Very desaturated, and doesn't make for a very Bright blue (unless you've been staring at reddish hues for hours, as I was when I first chose that color), but it still looks blueISH while still fitting with the warm color scheme.

In actual pigments, this happens naturally. When you make a red color a little bluer by adding blue, it gets less saturated as a red far before actually becoming any sort of blue. In a digital environment, where there is much more control, that's something you might have to choose intentionally!! It's very fun to learn though, in my opinion :3

Trick colors work best with a strong context color, and as subtle changes or details. Their best trait, in my opinion, is being able to blend in with warm colors while still looking cold, I love to use them in shadows for just that reason.

Here, a character's face is shadowed in what looks like a cool tone (as I loveeee doing that with shadows) but it's actually still quite red!
