Metavoltine is an alteration product of pyrite in arid climates; formed as a fumarolic sublimate and solfataric precipitate; may be a post-mining product. The name comes from the Greek μετά = “with” and voltaite, in allusion to the species’ original association with voltaite. Partly soluble in water.
