Bootleg 6X CD "Live At Montreal Jazz Festival 2001" (2021) documents several performances by saxophonist Michael Brecker, including his version of my father's tune "Silence", in trio with Charlie and pianist Danilo Perez.

“Free Man in Paris” Previews Joni Mitchell’s Remastered Shadows and Light

Joni Mitchell’s master jazz band is remastered on “Free Man in Paris.”

Recorded live Sept. 9, 1979, and originally released on Shadows and Light, it finds Mitchell playing alongside bassist Jaco Pastorius, guitarist Pat Metheny, keyboardist Lyle Mays, saxophonist Michael Brecker and drummer Don Alias and flipping the table on which the song sat.

Any improvement from the original is negligible and likely to be heard only by audiophiles with extra-sympathetic ears. That said, any excuse to revisit Mitchell’s jazz period is a good one.

“Free Man is Paris” follows similar sonic spit shines gives to “Coyote” and “Dry Cleaner from Des Moines” ahead of the June 21 release of the Asylum Albums (1976-1980).
