2017 White Sox Prospect Grades
Since the MLB team isn’t as exciting, let’s direct our attention to the MiLB. The Sox are stockpiled with young talent in their system, so without further ado, I give you my 2017 prospect grades:
Yoan Moncada – C+ We’re seeing Moncada’s eye. He has the plate discipline of a Frank Thomas, but sometimes he is overly patient. He takes one too many. He needs to lower his K%. 36.1% is way too high, but he’s pretty young. The immaturity shows, but he has a lot to build off of.
Reynaldo Lopez – A He has shown anything you could ask for. Aside from his injury, there is nothing really to complain about.
Lucas Giolito – B- He hasn’t been walking anyone at the MLB level and looked sharp the last month of his AAA stint this year. He overuses his fastball, but you can’t ask for more from his starts in the MLB.
Eloy Jimenez – A Since joining the Sox, .368/.400/.614 is his slash line. Now, people are already touting that we won the trade with the Cubs. Let’s not jump to that, but he has shown everything you want.
Michael Kopech – A+ He has looked extra sharp upon being promoted to AAA. 2.87 ERA in AA and 3 earned runs in 10 IP at AAA. He throws gas, and Hostetler is saying he could even make a run at a rotation spot in spring training next season. I’m not sure how I feel about that, but he has been strong.
Luis Robert – A- He’s sporting a nice .310/.491/.536 slash line in the DSL. Not too shabby. He’s very raw, but this is a great start.
Blake Rutherford – C+ In total he is slashing .269/.330/.361. He still has enough to figure out. We’re looking forward to what else he can show.
Dylan Cease – B- 3.40 ERA in A ball isn’t terrible, but I feel like the Cubs treated him as somewhat of a thrown in for the Q package.
Alec Hanson – A- 2.93 ERA in Adv A Ball is pretty sharp, and he earned himself a promotion to AA a week ago. He’s flying under the radar, as far as Sox prospects go. He could be an integral part of the 2020 rotation.
Zack Collins – C+ .226/.373/.450 slash line through Adv A and AA ball is ok. He has a fantastic eye and good power with one helluva arm while catching.
Dane Dunning – B Dunning was crushing it early on. He was more of a throw in for the Eaton trade, but he was still a first round pick. On both A ball teams, he has a combined ERA of 3.09, which is solid. It has gone up dramatically upon promotion to Adv A ball.
Carson Fulmer – D- He has been getting blown up in AAA Charlotte. The Sox promoted him to spot start and he got blown up at the MLB level, too. He needs to pick it up, or he will keep sliding in our prospect rankings. More and more writers are projecting him to be a reliever.
Jake Burger – B+ Well this meatball (pun intended) hit for a cycle and is slashing .295/.355/.446 at A Kannapolis. He was the first pick for the Sox in the 2017 draft, so we all expect big things.
Casey Gillaspie – C+ Acquired in the trade including Dan Jennings to the Rays, another Gillaspie was added to the Sox. He has big power, but his OBP is under .300 in AAA this year. That has to be bumped up to be a part of the 2020 squad.
Zack Burdi – C- I am giving Burdi this grade just because he got injured, so I assume his need of Tommy John surgery contributed to a weak start to the season. If he can come back strong, we’ll see him headlining the pen next season.
Spencer Adams – C 4.38 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP aren’t stellar, so this is just a pretty average season in AA ball. Hopefully he can push his way into a slot in AAA next season.
Micker Adolfo – C+ Now here is a guy flying under the radar at Kannapolis. He has put together a solid season, especially being so low in our system. He could sneak onto that 2020/2021 roster if you don’t look out for him.
Gavin Sheets – C+ .263/.348/.369 is a good slash line, but we would like to see some more pop out of that bat. He has a good shot to get promoted next season.
Luis Alexander Basabe – D+ Even though he was seen as a throw in for the Sale trade, do not sleep on this guy. He’s young and raw, and he hasn’t had the best season, but he could put it together quickly.
Ryan Cordell – B The guy we got for Anthony Swarzak’s half of a season on the south side. He’s on the DL, but he was slashing .284/.349/.506 before getting injured. He’s on the brink of getting promoted, which could happen early next season.
Jordan Stephens – A- Like Adolfo, this guy is flying under the radar. He has put up a 2.79 ERA in Birmingham and could be on the verge of a promotion next season. This guy can pitch.
Wow, it is so nice to have the luxury of having this many prospects to grade. I give huge props to Ricky Hahn for putting this farm together. I cannot WAIT to see these guys grow through the system. Hopefully, enough of them pan out, and we have a few diamonds in the rough. The less we need to spend in free agency, the better. It would be fun to have the money to snag Machado or Harper after next season. Go Sox.

When the Major League Baseball lockout expires, the Chicago White Sox are said to be plunging into the outfield free agent pool. The Sox have a number of internal options for filling this void. If necessary, Adam Engel, Andrew Vaughn, and Gavin Sheets can cover the outfield vacancy. Micker Adolfo and Yoelqui Cespedes, both prospects, provide depth in right field. The trouble is that those five choices aren't quite enough to push the Chicago White Sox over the top and into the World Series. Vaughn and Sheets have minimal experience in right field and it is questionable if they can play effective defense. Engel was healthy in 2021. Adolfo is more likely to be a trade asset for pitching help than the man who propels the Chicago White Sox to the top. Cespedes has to get some at-bats in the minors before he can make a significant contribution in the majors.

As we look at the White Sox, there are two immediate needs to be addressed either this offseason or the next. They are outfield (specifically center) and starting pitching. Kopech is out for 2019 because of Tommy John surgery. That’s just a reality now, so the front office needs to find someone to fill his 2019 innings. Currently, they have Reynaldo López, Carlos Rodón, and Lucas Giolito in the rotation. James Shields is a free agent. Dylan Covey is not consistent enough if the White Sox want to be around .500 next season or at least see some improvement.
As far as centerfield goes, every potential future centerfielder for the White Sox is on the Winston-Salem Dash. I’m not kidding: Luis Robert, Blake Rutherford, Luis Alexander Basabe, and Micker Adolfo are all high-A ball right now. That means someone has to play center for the White Sox until one of those guys breaks through. I do not see Ryan Cordell as a future centerfielder. Perhaps he can play left or right, but for now, let’s explore free agency for the two most important needs:
First Tier Starting Pitchers ($17 million +/year):
Dallas Keuchel
Patrick Corbin
Hyun-Jin Ryu
Gio Gonzalez
J.A. Happ
These are estimates for the best starters in free agency. On top of it, they’re all lefties. I truly think that if the White Sox want to contend, they need to sign one of these starters to a multi-year deal. In fact, Rick Hahn said he was going to pursue a starter. Well, Rick, the Sox fanbase wants you to fork some cash over to one of the above. I’m sure they would be very satisfied if you did.
Second Tier Starting Pitchers ($11-17 million/year):
Garrett Richards
Jeremy Hellickson
Nathan Eovaldi
Lance Lynn
Wade Miley
I broke these guys into a different tier because they may not have been as consistent in the last few years as the “First Tier” starters, but they are still solid.
Inning Eaters (League Min-11 million, most likely 1-year deal only):
James Shields
Bartolo Colon
Drew Pomeranz
Miguel Gonzalez
Tyson Ross
I think some combination of 1 pitcher from either the first or second tier and an inning eater would work. I would call that a success on the part of Rick Hahn. I would love to have two from both of the top tiers, but I do not see that happening given the track record of the White Sox spending money.
Let’s proceed to centerfield (or any outfield):
First Tier ($17-$35 million):
Bryce Harper
Andrew McCutchen
A.J. Pollock
Adam Jones
Second Tier ($10-17 million):
Marwin Gonzalez
Michael Brantley
Lonnie Chisenhall
Brett Gardner
Nick Markakis
Third Tier ($5-10 million):
Carlos Gonzalez
Jon Jay
Cameron Maybin
Carlos Gomez
Matt Joyce
Obviously, everyone wants Bryce Harper. I do not think the Sox will get him, but in that top tier and even the second tier, there are some other good baseball players. Some are older than others, but that said, the Sox have a market to their advantage. There is a lot of outfield talent in this free agent class. I know not everyone above is a centerfielder, but the ones who are not, are still serviceable in multiple outfield (or infield) positions. Yasiel Puig is also entering the last arbitration year of his contract, so who knows what will happen there. Either way, the Sox should make a splash in this market because their centerfield talent isn’t MLB ready just yet.
These are my favorite articles to write. I know speculation is sometimes stupid, but hope is all you have when your team loses 100 games in a season. The future is bright, but if you look at where the playoff teams get most of their talent, it’s via trade or free agency. See the above graph.
The Chicago White Sox are a top 5 farm system. In order to supplement that farm system, they have to start spending this offseason, even if it’s just filling an outfield spot and a starting pitcher. That suffices, but we need to know they are willing to spend when necessary. Paying to get Luis Robert was a step in the right direction. Let’s do it this offseason with the major crop of talent we have in this free agency class. D.J. out!

A Chicago Cubs-White Sox Earth Series could be faster than you feel
New Post has been published on https://othersportsnews.com/a-chicago-cubs-white-sox-earth-series-could-be-faster-than-you-feel/
A Chicago Cubs-White Sox Earth Series could be faster than you feel
White Sox admirers experienced 11 a long time to maintain their 2005 Earth Series title about the heads of their Cubs supporter friends, but that finished with the North Siders’ curse-breaking championship previous slide. It’s possible you experienced to be in Chicago to sense it, but I surely obtained the perception that was the worst element of the 2016 time for the Sox supporter foundation.
There is one particular little bit of bragging rights that the White Sox have held for substantially lengthier. In reality, it will be 111 a long time and counting by the time this time draws to a close. That is, the franchises have met in the Earth Series specifically one particular time, in 1906, and it was the White Sox who gained that championship. Unusual how you in no way listen to that mic-dropped into helpful bar spats in Chicago. Where is the sense of heritage?
The avalanche of adoration that has showered the Cubs the past few of a long time has remaining a lot of Sox admirers sensation remaining out, form of like Jan from “The Brady Bunch.” It didn’t assistance that the South Siders ended up one particular of the less interesting teams in baseball previous time: not terrible, not contenders, with a very long-term prospectus of paddling appropriate down the middle for the foreseeable potential.
On the other hand, White Sox basic manager Rick Hahn flipped the script previous winter season, when he embarked on a fast-fire rebuilding job that has specified his group one particular of the major farm systems in baseball. It has been a stunningly fast turnaround that a great deal are comparing to the pivot the Cubs made a number of a long time in the past when Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer arrived in city. The White Sox variation feels like it is unfolding even more quickly than the Epstein rebuild, which bundled not just an overhaul of talent but also a full rewriting of every single baseball-associated system in the Cubs group, from Mesa to Wrigleyville. Ahead of the 2016 time, ESPN’s Keith Law rated the ChiSox system at No. 22 — and that was an enhancement. It is now rated 2nd all round.
Consider this: Law rated the Cubs’ system No. 20 throughout the winter season prior to the 2011 time. Right after that time, Epstein was employed, and in the subsequent established of winter season rankings, the Cubs ended up however at No. 20. By 2013, the Cubs ended up up to No. five, then No. four in 2014. In 2015, they ended up in the postseason, and in 2016, they ended up the champs.
The advantage of these kinds of a fast increase is that everyone assumes the Cubs will be in the Earth Series combine for at the very least a number of a long time, if only mainly because so numerous of their main skills are below team control for the near term. The precise range of a long time in that window is tough to pin down, but it must be open up at the very least by means of Kris Bryant’s previous arbitration 12 months (2021) and even further than that if Bryant symptoms a deal to acquire out these a long time. Of course, the window could be open up substantially lengthier this is a smartly operate team with large sources.
Now, let’s convert our focus back again to the White Sox and get ready for a leap of imagination. 1st, we have to admit that there is a very long way to go from where they are appropriate now to where they want to be, which is in the identical elite tier as the Cubs. Lofty prospect rankings are fantastic, but they do not normally include up to Earth Series rivalry.
Prospective customers get hurt or fizzle out. Some corporations show to be far better at pinpointing talent than acquiring it. All kinds of matters could go incorrect.
With these skills out of the way, let’s pose this query: Could the White Sox contend for an American League pennant even though the Cubs’ window of rivalry continues to be open up in the National League? If so, when will we see the to start with Windy Metropolis Series because the times of Theodore Roosevelt?
A minor heritage
Chicago was started in 1833 with a populace less than that of the South Loop building where I now are living. Then the city was built up, burned down and built up again. Someplace along the way, they started off enjoying baseball. In 1906, when the White Sox played about 5 blocks south of where Confirmed Level Subject stands now, the Cubs played on the city’s west facet. As these kinds of, their Earth Series assembly was a West-South affair, which frankly will not have the identical ring to it as North-South.
Given that that very long-in the past assembly, when the Hitless Miracles toppled a Cubs powerhouse outfit that experienced gained 116 typical-time game titles, there have been remarkably number of seasons in which both equally franchises ended up prime contenders in their respective leagues. In reality, there have been only twenty five seasons because 1901 in which both equally ended up at the very least .500 — a price of as soon as every single four.68 a long time.
Through the pre-divisional period, there ended up a number of scattered seasons in which both equally teams finished in the major a few of their leagues, but commonly one particular of the two finished the time with a double-digit-recreation deficit to the pennant winner. Right after the major leagues’ split into divisions, there ended up a handful of seasons in which a Windy Metropolis series seemed at the very least achievable:
1972: The Cubs finished a distant 2nd, 11 game titles driving Roberto Clemente’s Pirates. The White Sox also finished 2nd, five.five game titles driving the eventual-champion Oakland A’s. The Cubs ended up in no way actually in it that time, but it really is enjoyable to muse about mainly because the White Sox’s engage in-by-engage in guy in these times was Harry Caray.
2003: The Cubs gained the NL Central and arrived inside of a recreation of the pennant. We will not converse of why they fell shorter. The White Sox finished 2nd in the AL Central that time, four game titles driving.
2008: This was the closest we have come to a 1906 rematch. Equally golf equipment gained their respective divisions, and both equally flopped in the divisional series to go a blended 1-6. It was really even though it lasted.
Back again to the current
The Cubs’ timeline for winning has been scrutinized time and again, and the approach by means of which they grew to become a design franchise is one particular that other teams are scrambling to replicate. The bottom line: The rebuild was not in influence, at the very least in conditions of typical-time engage in, till the get started of the 2012 time. They went on to reduce one hundred and one game titles. The Cubs made the postseason in 2015, just after building their to start with major absolutely free-agent splurge to increase their younger main with the signing of Jon Lester. They gained the Earth Series in 2016, the fifth time of the rebuild.
Keep up with the most recent as baseball’s time for promotions hits whole swing. Trade Deadline Day-to-day » Olney: Most important deadline queries » Insider: Predicting landing spots Olney: Finest in shape for offered aces » Insider: A deal for every single team » Full deadline protection »
Which is terribly fast, but if Hahn and the White Sox can match that timeline, then we are seeking at the White Sox leaping into rivalry by 2020 and hard for a title in 2021. That, if you recall, is the conservative estimate we set on the Cubs’ present window of elite rivalry.
Mainly because the White Sox’s whole assortment of potential customers is so new, it really is uncomplicated to envision how that could search — no one particular has washed out however. At the major league stage, Jose Abreu could however be viable by the 2020-21 seasons, while he could be a DH and veteran anchor. You could then be seeking at Matt Davidson — or someone else, possibly a potential splashy absolutely free agent — Yoan Moncada, Tim Anderson and 2017 to start with-rounder Jake Burger around the infield. Zack Collins, 2016’s to start with-rounder, could be driving the plate.
Some mix of Eloy Jimenez, Blake Rutherford and Luis Robert (or Charlie Tilson or Luis Basabe or Micker Adolfo) could guy the outfield. The setting up rotation could be stuffed with Michael Kopech, Lucas Giolito, Carlos Rodon, Reynaldo Lopez and Dylan Stop. There are other permutations and other potential customers to come.
On the other hand, as Dave Cameron from FanGraphs noted, the White Sox have only entered into the talent-acquisition phase of rebuilding at this level, and for all the upside their younger players have as a group, their success haven’t been especially eye-popping. You will find a really superior opportunity that the finished variation of the potential White Sox will be comprised of many names diverse from these stated earlier mentioned. Which is just how matters go with developmental pipelines.
The Cubs have been lauded for their talent identification and acquisition efforts the past number of a long time all you have to do is search at who is on the area to see why. It has been an amazing turnaround from the commencing of this decade, and number of teams have been so completed at these kinds of a collectively younger age. But every single little bit as important as the acquisition phase has been the Cubs’ means to transition their small league studs into successful major leaguers.
The White Sox surface to be on observe to match the Cubs in the to start with regard. But what about the 2nd? Which is what we’ll locate out about the subsequent two or a few a long time as they get started to thrust all these younger skills out of the prospect rankings and on to the major league roster.
If the White Sox do so productively, we could be owning a lot of enjoyable in Chicago come the autumn of 2020 or 2021.

So what's the deal with Micker Adolfo? Is he a lost case? The White Sox need an outfielder and they're considering Andrew Vaughn instead of Adolfo who already plays the position.
the white sox seem to have this problem where they have all this great talent and then don't seem to want to use any of it. They would rather put Vaughn out there instead Adolfo, someone who already plays there, like you said. Opening day is probably (?) going to be eaton, garcia and robert. But that means Micker gets left in the dust lol. And he was supposed to be a top prospect. Maybe his injury had something to do with it. But i hope to see him out there at some point.

Micker Adolfo, one of the White Sox top outfield prospects, has been sidelined but was supposed to come back to the field within a month or so. Today’s developments blindsided most of White Sox faithful with news that he’d miss the remainder of 2019 after arthroscopic surgery.

On May 1st, Carlos Rodón exited the game after 3 2/3 innings. He didn’t look too sharp that day, but everyone worried when he was pulled so quickly and kept glancing at his forearm. Fast forward a week, and Rodón is getting a second opinion on Tommy John Surgery. Although this stings because Rodón is a free agent after the 2020 season, the team hopes he can return for the second half of 2020. This was also expected after the recent news about him.
Unfortunately, it seems as if Nate Jones can’t catch a break either. He has been injured in what seems like every White Sox season in recent memory. He’s a strong reliever, but his health is a problem. The White Sox heavy reliance on his health has also been a problem. Knowing this was an issue coming into the prior few seasons, maybe that extension wasn’t the best option. He is also set to miss the remainder of 2019 after flexor mass surgery.
Luckily, Seby Zavala, Zack Collins, and Eloy Jiménez are returning to action shortly, but it seems that the above pessimistic news dump will overshadow this. Again, it’s another rough day for the rebuild.
