Harness intelligence to protect and govern your most important data
To ensure effective protection and governance around your most important data, you should implement intelligent solutions and processes to automatically discover, classify, label, and monitor this data—no matter where it lives or travels.
The unified labeling experience in Office.com/setup 365, now generally available, provides organizations with a more integrated and consistent approach to creating, configuring, and automatically applying comprehensive policies to protect and govern data across devices, apps, cloud services, and on-premises locations. This new approach gives customers a single destination to create and configure data sensitivity labels for both Azure Information Protection and Office.com/setup 365, so you can set up sensitivity and retention labels and policies in the same place. These labels can be used to enforce policy across our information protection services—for example, Windows Information Protection will be able to understand the presence of a data sensitivity label in a document and apply the policy to protect that data on the device.
The unified labeling experience is complemented by user experiences built into Office.com/setup apps and Windows—no plug-ins or add-ons required. This native labeling is now available in public preview for Office apps on Mac, iOS, and Android—giving customers a labeling experience they are familiar with if they are already using the Azure Information Protection client on Windows. We also support a growing ecosystem of third-party apps and security solutions. Starting in October, you will be able to preview the ability to open protected PDF files directly within Adobe Acrobat on Windows.
Additionally, our Information Protection SDK is now generally available, making it easy for ISVs and third-parties to build labeling and protection experiences into their apps and services. Learn more about all these new updates that help you meet both your security and compliance needs at our Tech Community.
In addition to the new unified labeling experience, we have several updates to Office.com/setup 365 data governance capabilities. First, you can now auto-apply a label to Exchange Online content and to files associated with a specific content type in SharePoint Online, such as tax documents or human resources information. Once you map a content type to a retention label with an auto-classification query, you can auto-apply retention and deletion policies to all files with that content type. This new capability enables you to align labels to your existing information architecture and governance policies.
We also made it easier for you to configure complex record retention schedules for your departments, locations, and categories with the new file plan capability, now available in public preview. The file plan capability allows you to import or export the retention plan as a template and bulk edit labels, providing a more robust way to manage your record retention policies.
Finally, long-term audit log availability is now coming to public preview for Microsoft 365 and Office.com/setup 365 E5 subscribers. This is an important update for organizations that need long-term access to audit logs for regulatory or security purposes. The audit log availability has now increased from 90 days to one year.
Learn more about all of these data governance updates at the Tech Community blog.

Microsoft again recognized as a Leader in Gartner Magic Quadrant for Content Services Platforms
Microsoft has pioneered intelligent content services in Office.com/setup 365 to help our customers achieve more. And the industry has taken note. Today, we are honored that for the second year in a row Gartner has recognized Microsoft as a Leader in the Content Services Platforms Magic Quadrant for 2018. Once again, Microsoft placed the highest in the Ability to Execute.
Gartner defines a content services platform as:
“A set of services and microservices, embodied as an integrated product suite and applications that share common APIs and repositories, to exploit diverse content types and to serve multiple constituencies and numerous use cases across an organization.”
We couldn’t agree more. SharePoint is the content services platform for Office.com/setup 365, with capabilities for creating, sharing, protecting, and reusing information. SharePoint hosts digital content like pages, lists, videos, images, designs, 3D, medical scans, and markup as well as traditional Office documents. SharePoint embodies ease of use with ease of management—on any device, for any user, at any location. Importantly, SharePoint collects and extends content experiences to any application in Office.com/setup 365—including Microsoft Teams and Outlook and, of course, third-party applications as well.
These innovations—along with customers’ transition to the cloud and the growing imperative for secure content collaboration and sharing—are driving growth across Office.com/setup 365, SharePoint, and OneDrive. More than 350,000 organizations now have SharePoint and OneDrive in Office.com/setup 365, including 90 percent of the Fortune 500. Active users grew over 90 percent, and data stored in SharePoint grew over 250 percent in the last year alone.
Additionally, Microsoft is the only company recognized as a leader in both the Content Collaboration Platforms and Content Services Platforms Magic Quadrant reports.
We feel this placement is a further indication of our commitment to our customers, recognizing that Microsoft provides leading content services capabilities, including:
SharePoint is easy to set up, with a simple and clean user interface paired to easy but powerful management, deeply integrated with OneDrive so you can take your files anywhere.
SharePoint empowers you to create beautiful, engaging pages and knowledge portals, enriched with video from Stream and conversations from Yammer, to connect across your organization.
We combine the power of artificial intelligence (AI) with content to help you be more productive, make more informed decisions, and keep more secure. This includes video and audio transcription, mobile capture to SharePoint using the top-rated OneDrive mobile app, as well as other features to make Microsoft 365 the smartest place to store your content.
Office.com/setup 365 is easily connected and automated via Microsoft Flow to over 200 cloud and on-premises systems, enriched with Azure cognitive services, and extended with PowerApps and the SharePoint framework for custom development.
SharePoint delivers content across Office.com/setup 365. Whether you are a Firstline Worker working remotely, co-authoring in Office apps, emailing cloud attachments in Outlook, or collaborating with your team in the new chat-based workspace Microsoft Teams, SharePoint provides a consistent set of experiences across the applications.
SharePoint can store any file and now supports viewing of over 320 file formats, including Adobe Photoshop (PSD), Illustrator (AI), Acrobat (PDF), as well as video, 3D formats, and DICOM images.
With Microsoft Search, we’re introducing new search experiences into the apps you use every day, including Bing.com and Windows, and our vision to connect across your organization’s network of data.
SharePoint supports customers ranging in size from small businesses to organizations with hundreds of thousands of users and has a maximum tenant capacity of 30 trillion documents.
SharePoint leverages Microsoft security capabilities such as Advanced Data Governance for automated retention and records management, Data Loss Protection (DLP), eDiscovery, and MIP-based encryption, all with consistent controls across Office.com/setup 365.
With 100+ global datacenters and Microsoft’s global network edge—combined with compliance standards, including ISO 27001, FISMA, and EU Model Clauses—we offer customers trusted enterprise-grade compliance and security.
At Microsoft Ignite last month, we shared exciting Microsoft 365 innovations that build on this foundation. And our innovations are amplified by the depth and breadth of our community. This year, we welcomed a limited number of Microsoft Preferred Partners to our Content Services Partner Program. Each is recognized for proven customer success to modernize, embrace, and extend our content services platform.
To learn more about how SharePoint can help you and your organization, visit our website and download our content services white paper. Finally, download your own complimentary copy of the Gartner Content Services Platforms Magic Quadrant.

New research highlights massive opportunity to empower Firstline Workers with technology
As companies around the world digitally transform their business models, operations, and corporate cultures, many have rolled out cloud and mobile technologies that have also transformed the employee experience. For information workers, technology has created a more networked and open flow of information, made collaboration easier, and provided more flexibility in where, when, and how they work.
But there’s another large and important segment of the workforce that has been underserved by technology to date. These are the more than two billion Firstline Workers worldwide, who work in roles that make them the first point of contact between a company and its customers or products. Firstline Workers comprise the majority of the global workforce and play a critical role in the global economy.
At Microsoft, we believe it should be a top priority of company leaders to empower employees in all roles to do their best work, and that a digitally enabled workforce represents a true competitive advantage.
Firstline Workers outnumber other corporate workers 4–1 in industries such as hospitality, manufacturing, retail, and healthcare.
We recently commissioned Forrester Consulting to conduct a study on the potential impact of providing Firstline Workers with technology. The study, titled Equip Firstline Workers With Better Tools To Drive Engagement was released today.
“Firstline Workers comprise the largest category of employees at most organizations … as the face of the company, they play a role in just about every customer interaction and every product and service that is delivered. Empowering them to do their best work and leveraging their experiences to guide business decisions is a huge opportunity for businesses.”—Forrester Opportunity Snapshot: Equip Firstline Workers With Better Tools To Drive Engagement: December 2018
Forrester surveyed 304 manager-and-above decision-makers and 301 Firstline Workers at companies in the U.S., U.K., Germany, France, and Canada. The companies span the retail, healthcare, government, and financial services industries and range in size from 500 to more than 20,000 employees.
The study offers strong evidence that by empowering Firstline Workers with modern tools, businesses can improve the customer and employee experience, enhance workforce productivity, and improve the bottom line.
But while 77 percent of Firstline Workers agree or strongly agree that technology is important to their roles at work, this segment of the workforce is often left out of enterprises’ digital transformation investments. In fact, the study revealed sizeable gaps between the perceptions of management and the actual experiences of Firstline Workers.
Only 23 percent of Firstline Workers strongly agree that they currently have the technology they need to be productive, yet 50 percent of managers say they feel the tools they offer make employees’ jobs easier and/or more satisfying, enough to be considered a competitive perk.

Opportunities to empower Firstline Workers
The study uncovers several areas of opportunity for companies considering how technology can transform the way their Firstline Workforce operates, including the specific types of technology that are likely to have the most impact. The study brings to light a few recommendations in particular:
Provide tools that support a mobile workforce. Firstline Workers such as retail associates, flight crews, and field service workers are mobile by nature of their jobs, but their most important tools often aren’t portable, and management doesn’t realize it. Less than half of the Firstline Workers surveyed agree that the tools they use do a good job of allowing them to be mobile, whereas 75 percent of managers feel the tools they provide do a good job of this.
Enable digital communication and collaboration. Many Firstline Workers rely on their coworkers, managers, and even customers for information and guidance throughout the day. They need modern tools that simplify collaboration, communication, and access to information. Nearly half (46 percent) of Firstline Workers surveyed indicated the ability to work collaboratively with teammates as the primary capability required to do their job.
Boost Firstline Workers’ access to data and artificial intelligence (AI). AI and business intelligence tools are increasingly being used by information workers to automate manual tasks and deliver data insights. But only 30 percent of Firstline Workers report having access to a predictive tool, and only 21 percent have access to a digital assistant. Such tools can help Firstline Workers do their jobs more efficiently and effectively and automate certain activities so employees can focus on higher-value work—like delighting customers and solving more complex business problems.
Involving every worker in digital transformation
At Office.com/setup, we have always believed in people’s ability to adapt and innovate. As part of our mission to empower people and organizations to achieve more, we also believe in the power of technology to amplify what humans can do. That’s why we are building new capabilities in Office.com/setup Teams that are tailored to helping Firstline Workers manage their workday, access information to do their job more effectively, and easily share insights and communicate with others.
Stay tuned for more from us on this front in the coming months. Learn more about how Office.com/setup 365 and Teams can help you maximize the impact of your Firstline Workforce and read the full Forrester report.

Introducing Office.com/setup 365 freelance toolkit—a solution to launch and scale your freelance workforce
With increasing participation in the gig economy—the contingent labor market made up of independent workers who contract for short-term engagements—enterprises are beginning to test and include freelance talent to support projects. According to the Future Workforce Report, 47 percent of hiring managers at enterprise organizations utilized freelancers (up from 44 percent the prior year), while roughly 9 in 10 hiring managers say they are open to engaging freelancers rather than temporary workers through a staffing firm. To help enterprises digitally transform or complement their conventional contingent staff solutions, we’re launching Office.com/setup 365 freelance toolkit, a curated set of tools, templates, and best practices to help our customers launch, execute, and manage freelance programs at scale.
The gig economy, which includes freelancers, consultants, contractors, and solopreneurs, is on the rise. According to Staffing Industry Analysts, the total spent on gig work in 2015 was $792 billion. Experts believe that within 10 years a larger proportion of the U.S. workforce will participate in the gig economy. In addition, according to Field Nation, 86 percent of independent workers intentionally choose freelancing.
The implications for enterprise companies are profound. To thrive in a highly competitive environment with rapidly changing technology and customer needs, enterprises must be agile and adapt to new business models to get work done with external talent. While adding on-demand freelance talent to the mix offers measurable results in speed and efficiency, the path to transforming existing policies and processes is largely undefined.
Our launch partner for this toolkit is Upwork, one of the largest online global marketplaces with over 375,000 freelancers in over 180 countries. We specifically are partnering with Upwork Enterprise, their end-to-end compliance, and freelance talent sourcing solutions.
The Office.com/setup 365 freelance toolkit offers solutions for the main friction points enterprises encounter when deploying a freelance program, including internal communications and awareness, team-wide collaboration, data analytics, and workflow automation.

The Twins Challenge: Office.com/setup 365 crushes Office 2019
Here’s a question I get a lot: What’s the difference between Office 2019 and Office.com/setup 365? Aren’t they the same?
Well—actually, no.
In fact, while they have similar names, there’s a world of difference between the two. Office.com/setup 365 includes fully installed Office applications—including the latest versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. And these apps keep getting better over time, with new capabilities delivered every month. Most importantly, Office.com/setup 365 is connected to the cloud, so you can access your content from any device, coauthor with anyone in real-time (regardless of whether or not they’ve purchased a copy of Office), and use the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to create more impactful content with less effort.
On the flip side, Office 2019 also delivers full installs of the Office apps we know and love—but they’re “frozen in time.” They don’t ever get updated with new features, and they’re not cloud-connected. Also, Office 2019 doesn’t support real-time coauthoring across apps, and it doesn’t have the amazing AI-powered capabilities that come with Office.com/setup 365.
To test our claim that Office.com/setup 365 can save you time and make work easy (and fun!), we did something unprecedented: We pitted our own software suites—Office 2019 and Office 365—against each other in a head-to-head showdown. We challenged three sets of twins to complete the same tasks in both versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and filmed them along the way.
Want to get to know Office 365?
I think the results speak for themselves; visit the Twins Challenge website for ideas about how to start maximizing your time while creating your best work. AI-infused features—like Ideas in Excel and PowerPoint, Excel Data Types, Ink to Text, and more—will transform your productivity.
If you don’t have Office.com/setup 365, we have a trial offer for one free month, so you can test it out before committing. We love Office.com/setup 365, and we think you will too.

National Bank of Canada reinvents workplace, empowers employees with Office.com/setup 365
National Bank of Canada—one of Canada’s leading integrated financial groups—set out to increase collaboration, speed up decision-making, and improve business results by reinventing their way of working. National Bank redesigned its headquarters, introducing open floor plans with no offices. All employees across business units can work together to deliver on strategic objectives, including the bank’s executives. But they didn’t just transform the physical environment, they embarked on a journey of digital transformation empowering their employees to drive innovation with Office.com/setup 365 technologies.
The way National Bank encouraged all 23,000 employees to adopt these transformative digital tools is a fascinating example of innovative “low touch” change management. It was also confirmation of how empowering Microsoft cloud technologies really are. When National Bank began its cloud journey with Office.com/setup 365, a survey revealed most people were content with the existing workplace. Despite their satisfaction with the status quo, employees embraced the new tools because they valued them, not because they were required.
Denis Rousseau, Modern Workplace program leader at National Bank, tells the story:
We had a vision to transform how people work. By giving employees the highly secure tools from Office.com/setup 365, they have access to any information on any device, from anywhere, so they can work the way they want. To encourage adoption, we treated employees the way we treat our customers, using internal marketing, peer influencers, self-learning, and corporate social media to motivate everyone to download Office apps from our portal.
With no formal directive, in just nine months 80 percent of the company had adopted new tools and were changing how they collaborate. And it only took six months for more than half of our workforce to adopt Office.com/setup Teams. As we transition into a cloud-first, mobile-first environment, we proved that people can work productively from anywhere with Office.com/setup 365.
Continuing this digital workplace transformation, National Bank plans to incorporate intelligent search and artificial intelligence (AI) services next. I’m excited to see how National Bank continues to reinvent productivity and agility in the banking industry.

Office.com/setup 365 saves you time and effort with transcription and voice commands in Word
Harness the power of your voice
Now more than ever, we’re all very busy—juggling family, work, friends, and whatever else life throws our way. New enhancements in Office leverage the Azure Cognitive Services AI platform so you can harness the power of your voice to spend less time and energy creating your best work and focus on what matters most.
Save time and create great content using Transcribe in Word for the web
Whether you’re a reporter conducting interviews, a researcher recording focus group sessions, or an online entrepreneur recording informal discussions, you want to be able to focus on the people you’re talking to without worrying about taking notes and without having to spend hours transcribing your conversations after-the-fact. If that sounds like you, Transcribe in Word is here to help.
Now you can record your conversations directly in Word for the web and transcribe them automatically. Transcribe detects different speakers so after you finish recording, you can easily follow the flow of the transcript. After your conversation, you can revisit parts of the recording by playing back the time-stamped audio and you can even edit the transcript if you see something amiss.
Your transcript will appear alongside the Word document, along with the recording, which enables you to leverage your transcript to create great content in the way that is best for you. Say you want to pull the perfect quote from an interview to support the main point of your story—just click the plus icon on any line of the transcript and voila, the exact quote is inserted. Want to send the entire transcript to your colleague? Simply click “add all to document” and your full transcript will be laid out in Word.
Like many people, you might use a variety of tools to get the job done – that’s why Transcribe enables you to upload audio or videos you recorded outside of Word. Whether you record on your phone or via one of the many calling and video conferencing apps, you can simply select the file to upload and transcribe. Transcribe supports .mp3, .wav, .m4a, or .mp4 files.
Transcribe in Word is available today in Word for the web for all Office.com/setup 365 subscribers and is supported in the new Office.com/setup Edge or Chrome browsers. With Transcribe you are completely unlimited in how much you can record and transcribe within Word for the Web. Currently, there is a five hour limit per month for uploaded recordings and each uploaded recording is limited to 200mb. Transcribe in Office mobile will be coming by the end of the year! Currently, transcribing audio into English (EN-US) is the only language supported, but we are working on support for more languages.
Transcribe in Word enables you to stay focused on your conversation at the moment, saves you valuable time and energy by transcribing it for you, and is integrated into Word so you can focus on the message of your document and not fuss around with different windows or applications.
