Gustav “Bingus” Bingrellstein III is a recurring non-player character in the Dungeons & Dragons campaign Tales of Home Depot. He was a paladin of the Solithian Army of Mira, the current Heart of Solis, and was best known for his friendship with Sir Appel, one of the main party members.

Early Life

Gustav Bingrellstein III was born in 1835 A.E. as the oldest child to Cassandra Bingrellstein, an esteemed general of the Solithian Army. Gustav would then become an older brother to Augusta Bingrellstein in 1842 A.E.. During his teenage years, Gustav attended Her Holiness’ Academy for the Immaculate and Faithful as part of required training to enlist in the Solithian Army. As a result of his prestigious family status, Gustav became one of Mira’s most trusted paladins, which would eventually lead to Gustav’s failed mission of vanquishing a couatl under Mira’s orders.

Sexuality

Gustav’s sexuality is the subject of contentious debate. Some believe him to be bisexual, citing a reference to a “time in college,”¹ while others vehemently deny Gustav could be anything more than heterosexual, fearing feeding into the Bury Your Gays² trope.

A deleted scene suggests that the event in question occurred with Guy Licec, a former Tower Academy student. Their relationship remains a mystery, however, as Guy does not reference the event during the duration of the campaign.

Death

During the Nova arc of Tales of Home Depot, Mira invites several of her most trusted paladins, as well as Sir Appel and Orion Stormquell, back to the Cathedral for a ball. Gustav is seen briefly during the ball, flirting with Lianata von Himmel, before disappearing from view. During this time, Mira offers Gustav the ability to wield a portion of her power. However, as stated by Mira, Gustav was “obviously faithful… but not cut out for this,” and meets an untimely end, unable to withstand the power she granted him.

The reception to his death was overwhelmingly poor, leaving most players³ and even several others⁴ grieving the loss of Gustav.

It is in fact not “the owl house dudes” but that did crack me up thanks. unfortunately the actual acronym would also tell you nothing because it stands for “Tales of Home Depot”. it’s a d&d campaign my friends and i play that has genuinely nothing to do with home depot (shoutout @blappel) and is a story about six people searching for a legendary sword in the middle of a war.

with that said if you’ve been here for the like 3+ years ive been posting about it and you had no idea what it was the entire time then you are so brave… thanks for sticking around 🫶🏽

unfortunately nobody was online in discord at the time so iniyan’s idea was to take their slander of me to tumblr instead. this also means i could not explain if i tried

oh god what happened to appel? <- this comes from someone who has no idea about their lore. or dnd.

ok this is gonna be really oversimplified for the sake of me not writing a novel (i would tho. i would)

so to give a little background appel is a paladin thats supposed to be serving the teen pope (long story) but like two months before the present he deserted the army to track blitz (one of the other pcs) down. since then hes been chilling with the party after realizing he kinda likes them actually (much more complicated than that but whats important here is hes not actively trying to leave the party for the army again). there have been a number of attempts by various groups to try getting appel back to the army at the command of Teen Pope but all thus far have failed

the entire party has been tracking down pieces of a compass to locate a legendary sword and have found out that the last piece is in the church with the teen pope (dangerous) (the entire party is comprised of wanted criminals for vastly different reasons) (the teen pope is probably kind of evil).

theyre informed by a [PREVIOUSLY] trusted contact that the church is holding like a party they need to infiltrate immediately because its their best bet of getting the last piece. all of them agree to go and get in a little circle to teleport there except the contact in question only teleported appel there and the rest of the party is sitting in a city across the continent freaking out because appel essentially just got kidnapped and they have no concrete way of getting to him

additionally, just prior to this event, blitz (the guy appel was hunting down) had a vision from god (equally long story) that implied something would happen to appel soon that would kill him if the party didnt manage to step in on time, directly paralleling a plot point in which another npc was sacrificed to god (i dont have answers for that sorry). so the party’s main information right now is that appel is gone and he has a very high chance of being killed in the church

TL;DR appel got kidnapped and the party has no solid way of getting him back at the present + they have reason to believe hes going to be killed if they dont make it in time

i dont know how to say this but unfortunately i have not played tota or. any other tales game for that matter (SORRY. worlds fakest fan. ive watched the anime for both tota and tozx but ive never touched the games outside of multiplayer with friends 💀).
