pairing : nct dream x reader (can be idol or non-idol au)

wc : 2.2k all together

genre : angst w tiny little fluffy moments <3

warnings : mentions of break ups, neglect, drinking, negative emotions (anxiety, insecurity, etc.), each part has the “title” which will sum up most of the content so read those if you’re unsure!!

author’s note! this was something i’ve been writing for literally ever but i finally finished it and holy moly was it long </3 as always, ty to the loml dani @wondersung for helping me pick tropes and bounce ideas <3 i hope you guys will love reading it as much as i loved writing it!

MARK LEE — neglect

mark loves you, it’s obvious to anyone who looks at you two when you’re together. he smiles brighter, laughs a little harder, holds you close to his chest and presses the softest kisses to your face. mark knows that what he feels for you won’t go away, he knows that you’re the one for him and you love him just as much as he loves you; unconditionally.

what he didn’t seem to understand, however, that relationships and love were more than just a good morning text or getting lunch together once a week. it’s more than the occasional invitation out somewhere or telling you that he loves you at the end of the phone calls you get occasionally. you know he means well, he tries his best but it just isn’t enough.

you’re lonely, your apartment is empty when he’s not there but it’s felt like that far longer than you’d like to admit. there are only small things littered around your place that suggest that anyone other than you had ever been there; the two toothbrushes in the bathroom or the matching slippers near the couch, one pair still looking as good as new while the others, yours, look worn in.

to him, as long as you love him and he loves you (which he does, very much), you’ll be fine. you’ll be able to overcome anything together; even his long nights away from the apartment that you’re not even sure if he calls home anymore and his lacking ability to show that he cares if you’re not right in front of him. you don’t want to leave mark, not now, not ever, but you’re not sure how much longer you can live with his ghost.

HUANG RENJUN — insecurity

your mind was always buzzing with thoughts, most of them about your relationship with renjun. anyone could look at him and tell that he was beautiful, that he was like personified moonlight with little stars shining in his eyes, and no matter who told you differently, you could never see him as someone in your league.

you weren’t pretty enough or funny enough or smart enough for someone as perfect as renjun. you’ve never told him this, of course, why would you? you don’t want to bother him with these stupid little insecurities, you want to keep the smile on his face. the way you see yourself is so different from how he describes you and you can’t help but fear that one day, he’ll realize his worth and walk away.

similarly, renjun isn’t sure why you’re with him. he doesn’t think he’s particularly handsome, he’s not super muscular, he’s not very tall and he can be a little passive aggressive. there are so many more people who could make you happy who are better than he is so why are you still here? he doesn’t tell you this either though, he doesn’t want you to see him the way he sees himself and leave him; he’s not sure his heart will be okay, if anything in him will be okay.

because you don’t mention the festering insecurities that pick at every little thing you two consider flaws, neither of you can comfort the other, neither of you can reassure the other that they’re not flaws, that they love those little things. it just builds and builds, the feelings weighing heavy on both of your shoulders until you can’t take it and then, piece by piece, the picture perfect relationship you two thought you had crumbles in front of your very eyes.

LEE JENO — right person, wrong time

you knew jeno was it for you. you knew that no matter where your life took you, who you met and what you did, you would never love someone as much as you loved lee jeno. he was perfect for you in every way, so much so that you were convinced you had probably met your soulmate. and over the course of your relationship, you realized that jeno was your soulmate. if only the universe didn’t make him appear in your life the moment your life was spiraling out of control.

you, like most people in the world, were facing a lot of problems at once. school, friends, your family, you had so much going on at once that it was hard to focus on your relationship with jeno. he wanted to help, noticing how pent up you seemed all time but you just couldn’t allow yourself to let him see how badly things were getting. and that’s when you realized it.

you were like a sinking ship and jeno was still on board, he’d drown if you didn’t force him away. you loved him more than anything and you knew he loved you but right now, all you were doing was hurting him and neglecting him. he deserved someone who was emotionally available to him right then and you knew you couldn’t be that person, not right now. so you make the hard choice of letting him go.

jeno was heartbroken, apologizing for things that didn’t make much sense, pleading for you to stay. but both of you knew that as much as you loved each other, it just wasn’t enough to look past how toxic things were with your current state. until you got better, until you could love him with everything you had, until you could commit your heart to him, you couldn’t make him stay. if you were soulmates then the universe would bring you back together. it had to.

LEE DONGHYUCK — inability to change / taking you for granted

if donghyuck is anything, it’s consistent, though that’s not necessarily a good thing. his habits of eating other people’s leftovers or snoring in his sleep are manageable, but his consistency extends beyond those small things. his inability to change has always been the downfall of your relationship, right until the moment it ended.

“you shouldn’t have to change for your significant other, no matter what they say. they’ll love you for who you are”.

you hear that a lot nowadays since you and donghyuck seem to argue over it so often. he’s young and he wants to have fun while he can, he wants to stay out late and drink too much and laugh at cuts and bruises he gets along the way. sure, he loves you but is it more than his desire to live his life the way he fully wants to?

in his mind, you’re too sensitive and too uptight for the lifestyle he needs. you don’t laugh at all his jokes, instead often scolding him for his timing, and you don’t like parties as much as he does, you’re no fun at the one he drags you too anyways. you’re too high maintenance when all you want is for him to spend one night in with you watching movies with some takeout, one night for just the two of you, one night where he at least acts like he cares.

and he does, of course he does, he’s your boyfriend. he cares but not as much as you want. donghyuck takes everything too casually, he’s too carefree to worry about the little things. you love him and he loves you, that’s all that should matter in this relationship. at the end of the day, you’ll still be by his side, you’ll still lay next to him in bed and he’ll wake up next to you, holding you close. right?

NA JAEMIN — accidentally leading you on

jaemin is far too nice, you think to yourself, now heartbroken in your room as he tries to text you, call you, anything. you weren’t expecting your confession to go well necessarily, but you definitely didn’t expect the obvious look of shock on his face and the way he quietly whispers “i’m not sure if i could ever see myself dating you”. of course, he hadn’t meant to say it like that but it slipped out before he could process it and you’re not giving him the chance to explain, though he’s not sure it would make anything better.

you’re convinced that na jaemin is one of the sweetest people in the world. he feeds the stray cats and dogs in the streets, he holds the door for anyone and everyone, he’ll split his lunch with you if you forget yours. unfortunately for you, you thought that some of the sweet gestures were exclusive to you.

the playful nudges when you sit next to each other, him linking his pinky with yours in crowded areas, the hugs where he sways with you while whispering jokes into your hair, driving to mcdonald’s at 4 am to buy you chicken nuggets; so many things that made you fall for him, things that made you think that it was a sign that he liked you too. and now you know, you were wrong, very wrong.

jaemin never meant to hurt you, not now, not when you first became close. his love language is physical touch so he’s naturally clingy towards people he likes, completely platonically. he makes playlists for all of his friends, he sends everyone “happy birthday <3″ right at midnight, he plays with everyone’s hair if it’s within his reach. he feels horrible that he lead you on but, as horrible as he feels, his heart doesn’t beat for you and he knows he can’t force it to.

ZHONG CHENLE — miscommunication

chenle’s a great listener, always willing to help you get through tough times in your life, ranging from your parents to school to your friends. what he’s not so great at, on the other hand, is talking. it’s easy to tell when chenle’s upset. it’s obvious by the look on his face. despite this though, you can’t remember the last time he told you what was bothering him so much.

he always looks up at you with that sweet smile and tells you not to worry, that he’s okay, just tired, that he didn’t sleep well, everything but the truth because as easy as is it to tell when chenle’s upset, it’s even easier to tell when he’s lying. you don’t ever push it, knowing that some issues are too personal, even for someone’s significant other to know, and you respect that.

so it came as a rather large surprise when you overhear chenle on the phone with a friend, rambling about how stressful his life has been and how much he’s been struggling to stay on top of everything. he doesn’t tell you this because he doesn’t want you to be disappointed in him, ashamed of him, but it comes off the wrong way to you, especially when you confront him.

“it’s just... hard to open up to you,” he says, immediately wishing he had phrased it better when he sees the hurt on your face. he knows that there were better ways to express his worries about opening up to you than telling you what sounds like the equivalent of he can’t trust you, but he panicked, thinking you had heard what he was rambling about. the miscommunication becomes mistrust in your mind and before he can stop it, a void has begun to form between you two, one he’s not sure he can fix.

PARK JISUNG — too young for love

jisung was always babied amongst his friends for being the youngest, his cheeks pinched and always cooed at. what better way to prove that he’s matured than be in a committed relationship? he’s always liked you, everything about you, especially since you don’t treat him like a child that’s just learned to walk. so he asks you out, texting his friends with a proud smile on his lips, telling them that he got himself a significant other. his friends are so shocked and excited and nosy that they don’t even notice how red jisung’s cheeks are, finally not teasing him, filling the youngest with a sense of pride.

dating jisung feels like a rollercoaster; somedays, you swear you’re the happiest couple in the world, that nothing could ever make you doubt how he feels about you and the next, you question what you mean to him. there’s no doubt in your mind that the first feeling is love, the warmth the blooms in your chest and spreads to your cheeks, your heart beating so quickly that you’re scared it’ll fly out. but the latter makes you wonder if jisung is serious about you, if he wants to move past the “crush” stage to the “i love you” stage.

you feel like some trophy that he shows off to his friends, something to prove that he’s mature enough to balance a relationship amongst his other responsibilities. you know he doesn’t mean to do this, jisung’s too sweet to do that but the fact that it’s unintentional doesn’t make you feel any better. eventually, you realize that you can’t stay, you can’t force yourself to pretend to be okay with the way his arm only slips around you when his friends are around or that he only kisses you when you’re alone.

it breaks your heart to see jisung so distraught when you bring it up, when you make it clear how differently he treats you when you’re alone and when he’s with his friends. you explain that he wasn’t a bad boyfriend or that you didn’t like him but you two were just too young to expect it to go as far as you were envisioning. you were just too young to fully comprehend love. but that doesn’t stop you from whispering the three words as you leave, pressing your lips to his cheek once last time. once the warmth on his skin disappears, jisung realizes that he hasn’t matured, not at all, because if he had, he wouldn’t have hurt you the way he had.

1. life feels more exciting with him

"what is wrong with you? since when do you take an interest in soccer?" yuna yawned as she got dragged by you to the benches near the fields.

you bit your lip and looked down, sitting her down one of the benches before sitting down beside her.

the both of you arrived just on time for the friendly match between the two soccer teams of your school. your legs bounced up and down in anticipation as the two teams got on the field.

"are you serious? park jongseong?" yuna sighed as she looked at your eyes that never left him.

you turned to glare at her before turning back to look at the match that had already started. to be honest, you had no idea what's going on but everytime jongseong scores a goal you'd cheer along with the crowd.

for the first time, you found the boring soccer, kind of exciting.

2. jealousy being the best policy

the cool wind from the air-conditioner of the library greeted you as your eyes immediately landed on jongseong. you out on your best smile and walked straight towards him.

"hi!" another girl cuts in front of you and you could only rush behind one of the bookshelves near you in a hurry, causing your nose to bump into it.

you grimaced and massaged your nose as you stared at the two through the gap of the bookshelf.

"for you!" the girl said, holding out a box of cookie towards jongseong and you scoffed.

"sorry, i don't accept stranger's food." he replied, not even looking up at the girl who frowned.

the girl ran away in embarrassment and you couldn't help but feel a little bit bad for her. she was extremely pretty too and your eyes followed her as she ran out of the library.

"you can stop hiding now." jongseong suddenly said and your eyes widened, turning back to look at him. "come out." he looked at you and you smiled sheepishly, holding the lollipop tightly behind your back

"i swear i didn't hear any-"

"what's behind your back?" he cuts you off and you placed it on the table unwillingly.

"you don't accept stranger's food! i'll take it-"

"and you said you didn't hear anything?" jongseong snickered. "you're not a stranger, we're friends from now on."

3. you can be you in front of him

"jesus! park jongseong!" you screamed as you watched the broken lipstick in his hands.

"we're in the library..." jongseong placed his hand smothered in lipstick over your and your eyes widened. you hurriedly looked for your phone and turned on your camera.

you took in a deep breath and turned to look at him, faking a smile before picking the broken lipstick peace and rubbing it all over his face. he gasped exaggeratedly and rubbed the lipstick he has on your face too. in the end, both of you got kicked out from the library, looking like an absolute mess.

you stared at him and bursted out in laughter, "you look so ugly!"

jongseong rolled his eyes at you and retorted, "you don't look that great either."

"you don't say that to a girl." you glared at him, wiping the lipstick with the back of your hand but smothering it even more.

he nodded, holding in his laugh as he looked through his bag. "wipe it off." jongseong gave you a makeup wipe.

"what are you, doraemon?" you snickered , wiping it off quickly.

"isn't it because someone complains that she sucks at eyeliner?" he raised his bdow at you and you smiled sheepishly, looking away.

4. you want a future with him

you looked at the last line of your checklist, wanting a future with him. you looked up from your notebook and at jongseong at the soccer fields and a small smile appeared, ticking the last box.

after jongseong scored a goal, he immediately looked at you, proudly smiling as you cheered for him.

even though you're not sure what love is, you do know that you want to be with him for the rest of your life.

"park jongseong!" you shouted as the match ended. jongseong looked at you as he stayed in his spot.

"what?" he shouted back as the other players looked at the both of you.

"i like you! will you be my boyfriend, the kind that gets a ring on his ring finger in the future!"

sigh was originally going to just write for epex but to1 came knocking 😨 this ain't my proudest work tbh i had a lot of mental blocks while writing but i hope you enjoy it still! <3 ANYWAYS im not sure if ill write for to1 definitely but for now just enjoy this chanhyuk one! <3 dedicated to my bestie @mintfilms bc i miss her :(

day 1

"gosh, it's brutal out here." you say as chewed on the gum minsu gave you. you gave the couple that was making out a disgusted glance and twirled your hair in between your fingers.

"that's cho chanhyuk, he's a year older and also the notorious playboy of our school." minsu explained as he stood behind you. "i would recommend you staying away from him in case he breaks your heart."

"break my heart? what if i break his first. looks like you don't know me that as well as you claim kim minsu." you smirked, walking away as the bell rings.

"you're a girl after all, chan isn't as easy as you think. he isn't like sungmin." he said and you nodded mindlessly.

"we can test it out, can't we?" you grinned, turning back and making eye contact with him. "he looks... easy."

day 7

"new girl!" someone shouted after you as you climbed the stairs.

you turned around looking at him and narrowed your eyes. you remembered him vividly, of course, how could you forget? you raised a brow at him, urging him to continue as he seemed like he had something to say.

"have lunch with me?" he asked and you grimaced.

"and here i am, thinking you'd be better at asking a girl out." you scoffed, shaking your head and continued walking upstairs.

chan didn't seem to be easily defeated by your snarky comment though, instead, he seemed to be even more interested in you, following you up to the rooftop.

you decided not to question him, enjoying the silence and peace without your chatterbox cousin minsu. you leaned forward, taking in the busy streets of seoul quietly.

"why'd you transfer?" chan muttered, breaking the silence as he stood beside you, looking down at the busy streets too.

"no reason, just hated my previous school." you lied, shrugging. "and you, why are you constantly toying around girls' feelings?" you looked at him and he shrugged.

"no reason, just felt like it." he snickered and you nodded, looking away.

"you dated so many girls and yet never fell in love. kinda impressive." you replied sarcastically.

"love is a bad word. it isn't real." chan sighed and you frowned.

"who says? love exists. my aunt and uncle, they love each other dearly." you glared at him.

"you act like you don't toy around with boys." he retorted, glaring right back at you.

you took in a deep breath, suppressing your anger and faked a smile at him.

"love exists but i'm one of the few who doesn't deserve it." you swallowed down the lump in your throat and walked away.

chan stood rooted to the ground, staring at your shadows that was getting smaller and smaller as you got further and further away.

you situated yourself under a tree and looked up into the sky, repeating to yourself under your breath, "love does exist."

day 24

you took your seat in the library, opening up your laptop as you prepared to work on an overdue assignment. plugging in your earphones, you played your favourite playlist and sighed, looking through the articles.

chan spotted you from a far and grinned, silently creeping behind you and took the seat beside you. you looked over at him, sulking at his appearance.

"cho chanhyuk, there's so many empty seats, why sit beside me?" you rolled your eyes and turned back your attention to the screen in front of you.

"whatever, i just missed you." chan pouted, taking one side of your earpiece. "what are you working on?"

"go away chanhyuk, not now." you huffed, irritated at his presence.

chan seemed to get the cue immediately and remained quiet for the rest of the time he was with you.

after a while, you got weirdly uneasy at the silence with him and sneakily stole a glance of him. a small smile made it's way onto your lips as you saw him sleeping soundly beside you. you quietly took out the earbud that was resting in his ear and plugged it back into your own ear.

you frowned, noticing the sun was shining right into his eyes. heaving a sigh, you lifted your hand and hovered it over his eyes as an attempt to block the sunlight from him and continued to study the articles.

unbeknown to you, chan was awake. he opened his eyes after realizing the bright light that was shining into his eyes was gone. he struggled to keep a straight face as he noticed the hand that was hovering over his eyes protecting him from the sunlight.

love was starting to reintroduce itself to the two of them.

day 67

"haven't you noticed? chan hasn't been dating or messing around with anyone for the past month..." minsu frowned in confusion as the both of you walked past chan's group of friends.

"really? maybe he decided that the playboy lifestyle isn't the way." you replied, uninterested as you looked at your nails. "don't you think this-"

"you haven't been messing around with anyone either. have you not noticed?" he said frustratedly and narrowed his eyes at you.

"as i was saying, don't you think this colour matches me well? it isn't as ugly as i thought." you ignored him and continued looking at your nails.

"of course it does." you heard the same annoying voice say as he wrapped his arms around your shoulder.

you looked up at him and gave him a look, "yeah okay, getting these removed."

chan snickered and he hugged you tighter, unknowingly you lean into his hold. minsu gave the both of you a look and shook his head in disappointment before trudging away.

"okay but, purple suits you well, you should keep it." chan complimented, tucking a hair strand behind your ear.

"is that so?"

day 94

your collection of purple has started to grow larger and larger. even your liking towards the colour grew. everyone but you and chan noticed of course.

the two players turned out to be the ones most oblivious to these scenarios.

"cho chanhyuk!" you called after him, running up to him.

"what's up?" he grinned, patting your head gently.

"nothing." you looked away, eyes wandering as an unfamiliar feeling succumbs you.

an unusual swarm of butterflies flew in your stomach, it was as if spring had sprung in you. you turned to look at chan, only to see him staring right down at you.

"i wanna be with you, always. i think i'm in love with you." chan confessed and you grinned.

"i told you love existed."

"and you deserve it."
