Behind the Mask
@mandy984 i love this idea thank uuuu!! i hope u dont mind that i sprinkled some class sugar & in there
When Damian walked into Alya Cesaire’s costume party, there were many things he was expecting. Loud music, courtesy of Nino? Check. Basic party snacks such as chips and soda? Check. Orange and black color scheme for Halloween? Check.
What he wasn’t expecting, however, was to see one of Marinette’s clients.
She was wearing a costume he’d seen in her commission sketchbook: a Robin-inspired costume, but fit for the female form. The costume was lovely in person, and he mentally decided to compliment Marinette on it as soon as he recognized her.
That was another thing he wasn’t expecting- he didn’t see Marinette anywhere, though he saw a couple of her other designs. The girl dressed as Robin was talking with Alya, and he took a moment to appreciate Marinette’s handiwork.
Sweet black boots with a tactically-small but still present heel, an R embroidered on them in yellow thread. Black tights with a different black thread making the same R pattern. Green shorts, short enough to be flirty but not so short that one could see the bottom of the red unitard under jt. A hand-crafted utility belt that he’d seen Marinette working on night after night.
As he looked to her face to examine the mask, he saw her staring at him, an eyebrow raised and amusement etched across her face. She walked over to him, grinning.
“Were you gonna come over and talk to me, or were you just planning on checking me out all night?” she asked, grinning at him. Despite his Ladybug-inspired costume- which he’d made BY HIMSELF in secret so he could impress Marinette- Damian had never felt more exposed than he did when the faux-Robin laid eyes on him. He took a defensive step back.
“I wasn’t checking you out! I was admiring your costume,” he protested, looking offended. The girl grinned impishly and did a little twirl, showing off the skort he’d thought was just shorts.
“Thank you! I like your costume as well. Are you a Ladybug fan?” Damian nodded, remembering Marinette’s expression when he had originally expressed distaste for the superheroine. Apparently the Parisians loved their superheroes. The faux-Robin smiled fondly at him and held out a hand. “Since the point is anonymity, you can call me... Cherry,” she offered, her hand still held out.
Damian shook it and tentatively grinned back at her. “Call me Bug, then,” he offered, deciding to go with his theme. The two spoke for a while, but both noticed the other looking around a bit as the party raged on. Cherry was the first to mention it.
“Are you looking for someone? If you’re supposed to meet someone I’d hate to intrude,” she stated, smiling sweetly at him. He smiled back.
“Ah, there was a girl who was supposed to be here tonight. She might be here, but I thought I would be able to recognize her,” he said somewhat mournfully. She nodded in understanding.
“I’m in the same boat. My friend was supposed to be here. I was gonna ask him out tonight,” she sighed, and Damian nodded in return.
“I was going to ask my friend out as well,” she chuckled, “but... I could always ask her out some other time,” he thought out loud. Cherry shook her head, smiling wryly.
“Not me. Tonight was the night I was going to actually be brave. I don’t think I’ll muster up that courage again.” Suddenly, Alya ran up to them.
“Mari, girl, we need you in the kitchen. Kim is fighting Kagami,” she said, taking Cherry’s hand. As she was dragged away, Damian was left in shock. Alya had called her Mari. Alya called Marinette Mari. Cherry was Marinette. Marinette was looking for someone. She was going to ask someone out tonight. Was it him? Was she going to ask him out?
He followed them into the kitchen. Marinette had an arm over Kagami’s shoulders and was scolding Kim while Kagami secretly stuck her tongue out at him. Once everything had calmed down, she turned to the door but paused at the sight of him.
Before she could say anything, he pulled his mask off. She gasped as he took a step closer.
“Marinette. Was I the friend you were going to ask out tonight?” he asked her tentatively, one hand moving to rest on her elbow. Her eyes widened.
“I... yeah. Damian, would you like to go on a date with me?” she asked him, looking hopeful.
Damian smiled back. “I’d be delighted, mon angée.”
