Your infant is nestled in the bassinet, snuggled and wrapped in a soft blanket that keeps him warm and safe. You find yourself studying him from the bay window you’re sitting at, soft music playing nearby to keep him sleeping.

Its only after Tucker calls your name again that you give him your attention. You stand and cross the room, every step you take is languid with no urgency. Tucker’s waiting for you, the bag held out to you is made of recycled paper, the kind you’ve seen before, and you know its a gift for you.

“What is it?” You gaze into the bag, noting the folded material that seems soft to the touch.

You lift the material from inside, dropping the bag to the floor and you manage to just unfold the gift when your husband appears behind Tucker.

“Get out.” Nick grits his teeth, aggressive bite that you’ve only seen a few times before, and Tucker immediately makes himself scarce.

“Nick-“ He comes toward you with a powerful stride and grabs hold of your face, cupping your cheeks and smashing his lips against yours.

Tongue meets tongue, teeth clash and the sweater falls from your hands. You’re held in his grasp, you’re rooted to the spot as he possesses you with a kiss. He pushes you back toward the bed, both of you falling to the mattress, and he still doesn’t stop.

He doesn’t stop until he’s ripped your cheap shirt and left nips, licks and kisses all over the column of your neck. He doesn’t stop until he’s kissed all over your chest and then he stops. Nick rests his head against your chest, he uses your breasts as a pillow and snaked his arms around you.

He didn’t need to be asked twice, he didn’t need to be pressured, instead he walked toward your boy’s bassinet and lifted him from the bedding. Nick tucked him into his chest and crooned, acting as if he’d been there from the very beginning.

England beat South Africa by 104 runs in opening game

It was comfortable in the end.

But, at times, England’s 104-run victory over South Africa was a nervy and even slightly subdued way to open a World Cup.

The hosts were not able to bat at their brutal best on a tricky pitch and the Proteas were in contention of chasing down 312.

Enter England all-rounder Ben Stokes to light up a grey day at The Oval and ensure a memorable start to the tournament.

Running towards the mid-wicket boundary, Stokes leapt backwards and plucked Andile Phehlukwayo’s powerful sweep shot out of the air with his right hand.

Stokes could not help but laugh as he saluted the crowd and nonchalantly booted the ball away before being mobbed by his delighted, disbelieving team-mates.

“You have to smile. What a catch. He never looked like he was going to get anywhere near it,” said stunned former South Africa captain Graeme Smith on BBC Test Match Special.

“It was a fluke. To be honest I was in the wrong position – if I was in the right position it would have been regulation,” Stokes told BBC Sport.

That catch was the highlight of a superb all-round performance by Stokes.

He hit 89 off 79 balls – his highest score in all forms for England since his altercation in Bristol in 2017 – to help guide England to 311-8 after Jonny Bairstow was out second ball to leg-spinner Imran Tahir.

Stokes’ rocket throw from the deep ran out Dwaine Pretorius, he pouched a straightforward catch to remove JP Duminy and then claimed two wickets in as many balls to finish South Africa off.

That, as England captain Eoin Morgan put it, is called having “a full day out”.

“When he does that it’s extremely entertaining and great for the game,” said Morgan. “We see a lot of him in training, doing stuff like that all the time. You just shake your head.”

Former England captain Michael Vaughan said: “Any team’s success is generally geared around the all-rounder. Ben Stokes finding form in the first game of the World Cup is a huge boost for England.”

Even with Stokes, Morgan, Joe Root and Jason Roy passing 50, England’s total looked only about par, leading one fan to shout through the TMS commentary box window: “Is that enough?”

“We have no idea,” replied BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew.

Jofra Archer was determined to make the answer: “yes, plenty”.

Bowling with a venomous combination of pace, bounce and accuracy, Archer took 3-27 and showed exactly why he surged into the World Cup squad after qualifying to play for England in March.

Archer has an incredible natural talent. He is one of those fast bowlers who makes it look incredibly easy.

There are some who have a very easy, rhythmical approach that doesn’t seem to take a lot out of them. Archer just coasts.

He’s got so much at his disposal and, because he used to playing in the big time in Twenty20 leagues, he is incredibly relaxed in international cricket. He has taken to it so easily.

Archer gives England an edge. He hit Amla, one of the game’s finest players, in the grille because Amla was slow on the delivery.

Archer gets top-order players out. These days, you have to take wickets in one-day cricket. You need something different, and that is what Archer brings.

Is cricket coming home?

It soundtracked England’s run to the football World Cup semi-finals last summer.

And as Morgan’s side wrapped up victory, a reworked version of Three Lions played out at The Oval.

There were chants of “cricket’s coming home”. Many posted the same on social media. Others complained it was embarrassing and unnecessary.

“This isn’t about you.” Nick has to remind Johnny when he makes a comment about an alternative kind of cream puff he’d like to try.

The alphas and their courting attempts were going to be judged by their parents, a necessary step that needed to happen since there had been one too many hiccups.

Johnny was too cocky, a little shit who tried to over each, Nick Fowler scared you with a bout of anger when he had gotten pushed too far by another alpha in a different frat house. Bucky had nearly snapped another alphas neck for a comment he had made about you, rightfully pissed off though it was met with apprehension.

“This about proving we can keep our heads out of our asses long enough-“ Nick Vaughan had already been berating Johnny when you had stepped through the door with Bucky and Nick in tow, the two other alphas not impressed either with the event.

“Bubs,” the gentle Nick was the only one who had ever gotten anywhere with you, the only one who managed to crack the ice, “here baby, you can sit with me.”

You brushed Fowler, Bucky and Johnny off and approached Nick. There wasn’t much of anything to do before you prepared for your parents arrival and yet you’d been anxiously biting at your lip to the point were it had been cracked and bruised.

“You can’t keep her to yourself-“

“Fuck off, Nick.” Bucky had fired off at his cousin, grating him as much as he grated you. “You’ve been an ass for days. Get fucked-“

“I can’t get fucked, Bucky. Omega won’t even look at me.”

“And who’s problem is that?” Johnny had taken a crack at Fowler, joining the chance to gang up on the grumpier alpha.

“If I could dump boiling tea on all of you, I would!” You slammed your hand upon the table, clattering dishes and spoons drawing all attention to you. “I’m not property! I’m not your you! I’m tired of you always trying to manhandle me.”

Silence fell after your outburst, all eyes on you while you slowly sank down onto a chair. Huffing dramatically and rolling your eyes with annoyance.

“Get along for five minutes so we can leave and avoid each other like before.” It would have been amusing to you, if it wasn’t just as pathetic, to see Nick Fowler, Bucky Barnes & Johnny Storm sitting around a table with lilac table clothes and floral teacups.

“Jolliest bunch of assholes this side of the country.” Johnny grinned, winking at you when he sat on the other side of you.

“Bite me.”

I sent an ask in the other day for the future mob boss au. If I remember right it was about the reader giving nicknames to the nicks so no one is confused when she talks to friends about them. I think Fowler was grumpy like the dwarf and Nick V was sunshine? Oh I think I also mentioned her having one like candle or match for Johnny. Bucky I don't remember but he's already using a nickname so maybe she just calls him James or Buchanan.

I love this idea of her giving them nicknames

I can see her calling Nick Fowler Oscar (The Grouch)

She calls Johnny Lumière or little limp wick (like on a candle)

Nick Vaughan she would call something like Cheerbear

Bucky would still get a nickname but something that he blushes to like Bucky Boo or Boo-bear

Like in the four future mob alphas, he is the mellow one, as in not scary. So does he ever get angry, or he just remains chill? Even the other Nick V, the one with pipsqueak? What gets rise about these two versions of the Nick Vaughn. Or are they forever calm and collected?

Nick Vaughan/Cheerbear is definitely the calmest of the alphas and doesn’t lose his cool nearly as often

When he does lose his cool its terrifying, the calm and cool guy who usually can take so much flipping his shit makes Nick F & Bucky look calm

When it comes to Nick and Pipsqueak, Nick (again) is usually very calm but he’s also very protective of his soulmate and that’s when he’ll lose his mind
