Hivemind
Author: David Monteyne His hideout is a tidal cave, little more than a crawlspace gouged into a seaside cliff. He rarely leaves it. He starts brushwood fires to keep warm and forages by moonlight for the limpets and starfish and anemones that populate the tidal basin. The part of me that is a hunter — a native of this remote frost-bound tundra — shines an industrial flashlight into the crevice…

Coronavirus: Supermarkets preparing for 'food riots' as panic buying Brits strip shelves

How supermarkets are responding to the first effects of coronavirus
UK supermarkets are responding as what seem to be the first effects of coronavirus on retail make themselves felt.
Ocado has warned its customers to book their delivery slots well ahead at a time when they are filling up fast.
In an email to customers, the online grocer says it is “experiencing exceptionally high demand” as “more people than usual seem to be placing particularly large orders”. As a result, delivery slots are selling out faster than expected – especially over the weekends.
It advises customers to book their delivery slots around two or three days earlier than they might usually have, and to choose weekday deliveries between Monday and Thursday if they can be more flexible.
Shoppers are likely to be stocking up ahead of potentially having to follow government guidance by self-isolating in coming weeks, should they find they have come into contact with someone who has been diagnosed with the Covid 19 coronavirus. Already there are reports that items such as hand sanitiser is running low.
Elsewhere, former Tesco supply chain director Bruno Monteyne, now a food retail analyst at Alliance Bernstein, has outlined how the supermarkets are likely to prepare for empty shelves in the face of stockpiling by shifting to ‘feed the nation’ status when that becomes necessary. He said that in a pandemic scenario both parents and those caring for the sick would be unable to work, as well as those directly affected.
“Yes, it will be chaotic (and expect pictures of empty shelves) but the industry will reduce complexity to keep the country fed,” he wrote in a broker’s note, reported by The Guardian.
In it he said supermarkets and their suppliers would work together to reduce ranges but that prices were not expected to rise because “food retailers cannot be seen to be profiteering at a moment of crisis”. Profits would be hit, he predicted, to a tune of £2.1bn across the sector.
Speaking from today’s government press conference on the coronavirus outbreak, UK chief scientific officer Sir Patrick Vallance suggested, however, that there should be no reason for people to stockpile. He said that there was a government sub-group looking at food provision and that measures to provide food to those who were self-isolating would need to be put into effect.

Dutch Espoir: nabeschouwing.
(18-Jan-2020)
- Isabelle Schrenk (°00; u21/-78kg; 5° Kaunas);
Anderen zijn wel pas 1ste-jaars en hebben potentieel, maar zullen nog alles moeten bewijzen in hun uiteindelijke gewicht:
- Deny Altemirov (°02) was al 1° Bremen’18 (u18/-50kg), 5° Coïmbra’18 (u18/-50kg), en 5° Zagreb’19 (u18/-55kg);
- Muslim Adashev (°02), die hier als 1ste-jaars de Dutch Espoir wint /-66kg;
zijn vader zei mij ooit toen ze vaandelvlucht pleegden, dat hij wou stoppen met judo, want liever voetbalde, en dat zijn kinderen toch geen judo-ambities meer hadden....
Wil ik ook nog toevoegen:
- Jitse Van den Herrewegen (°01; u18/-73kg: 2° Bremen’18; 7° EK Sarajevo’18);
- Yves Ndao (°01; Sr. kampioen in de /+100kg op 18j; 3° Coïmbra’18 u18/+90kg);
- Vicky Verschaere (°00; u21/-78kg; onze huidige Senior-kampioene):
7° Gdynia’18; 2° Prague’19; 7° Berlin’19; 3° Cluj Napoca’19
en zij die in Mittersill zaten:
- Robbe Demets (°02; in 2019 u18/-55kg: 1°Bremen, 3°Bielsko-Biala, 2° EYOF)
- Jarne Duyck (°02; in 2019 u18/-73kg: 2° Bielsko-Biala, 7° EK)

Shares in German Wholesaler Metro Jump After Takeover Offer
Shares in German wholesaler Metro jumped more than four per cent on Monday after EP Global Commerce, an acquisition vehicle owned by Czech and Slovak investors, made a takeover offer that values the company at $6.6 billion.
EP Global Commerce, which already held a stake of nearly 11 per cent in Metro, made the takeover offer late on Friday, with Metro’s biggest shareholder – investment firm Haniel – already agreeing to sell its 15.2 per cent stake and EP exercising a call option for a stake of 5.4 per cent held by Ceconomy.
Ceconomy AG is a public limited company in Germany that operates the consumer electronic chains Media Market and Saturn.
Metro said on Sunday that the unsolicited offer substantially undervalued it, noting that the offer price was only three per cent above the closing share price on Friday.
It advised shareholders to hold off on taking action until management comments further.
Metro shares were up 4.5 per cent at 16.25 euros at an 18-month high.
Bernstein analyst Bruno Monteyne said EP was paying “rather a big premium for a declining business’’.
“Clearly, management has to do its fiduciary duty to obtain maximum value but we can’t see a higher bid coming along,’’ Bernstein said.
He noted that EP already had a stake of more than 30 per cent with the shares from Haniel and Ceconomy.
EP Global Commerce said on Friday that its offer price of 16 euros for each ordinary share and 13.80 euros for each preferred share represented a 34.5 per cent premium to when EP Global Commerce first invested in Metro in August.
The firm, co-owned by a Czech investor, Daniel Kretinsky, and Slovak partner Patrik Tkac, said the offer was “a compelling value and a unique opportunity’’ for shareholders given the difficult market and challenges facing Metro.
Once a sprawling retail conglomerate, Metro has in recent years been restructuring to focus on its core cash-and-carry business, selling off the Kaufhof department stores and then splitting from consumer electronics group Ceconomy.
It operates in 26 countries with 771 stores and 150,000 employees, and it is trying to offload its loss-making German hypermarket’s chain Real as well as its operations in China.

Amazon just took a page from the playbook of China's richest man
When Keith Hu of Northwest Cherry Growers was hired to connect American cherry farmers to Chinese consumers, e-commerce giant Alibaba provided a better platform than international grocers. Hu's experience highlights how the modern grocery landscape demands both the speed and reach of international e-commerce and the local connections to access to farm-to-table produce. Indeed, Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN)'s blockbuster purchase of Whole Foods (NASDAQ: WFM), announced on Friday, has drawn more than one comparison to the acquisitions by Amazon's Chinese counterpart.
This leaves other grocers with 2 choices: (1) try to be the next network to be bought by Amazon, or (2) become the local surviving incumbent, the alternative shop to Amazon.
Bernstein analyst Bruno Monteyne
While Alibaba prides itself mainly on providing a logistics ecosystem for local businesses, it has deep ties with major grocery stores and food delivery businesses across the world. The company has invested in Sanjiang Shopping Club, food delivery service Ele.me, cold supply chain company Cainiao, and many others.
We started working with the wholesale market, Walmart China, big box retailers.
CEO Jeff Bezos
