Happy Birthday one of my favourite Scottish folk singer’s Dick Gaughan.
Born Richard Peter in 1948 in Glasgow he first picked up the guitar at the age of seven, and issued his debut solo LP, No More Forever, in 1972,Gaughan then signed on with the folk-rock group the Boys of the Lough, releasing a 1973 self-titled LP before returning to his solo career with 1976’s Kist o Gold.
In the late ‘70s and early '80s, he worked as a critic and columnist with Folk Review magazine, and also acted as a member of the 7:84 Theatre Company; after a three-year absence from the studio, Gaughan also returned to regular musical duty with the release of 1981’s Handful of Earth. A Different Kind of Love Song followed in 1983, and in 1985 he released Live in Edinburgh; True and Bold appeared a year later. After 1988’s Call It Freedom,
Gaughan again retreated from view; much of his time was devoted to his increasing interest in computer technology, and he later earned notice for his skills as a programmer and web designer. Finally, he formed a new band, the short-lived Clan Alba, who disbanded after releasing their 1995 self-titled debut.
Dick has released many songs through the years and many have been recorded by others including, Billy Bragg, Christy Moore, Mary Black, Roy Bailey and Capercaillie. He has been the subject of three full television documentaries in the UK - BBC2 Spectrum , Scottish Television NB and BBC4 Session - as well as many radio documentaries in several countries.
In September 2016 Gaughan announced that he was cancelling all public performances until further notice. This was because he believed that he had had a stroke, which was affecting his ability to perform.[23] In November of that year a benefit concert, featuring Aly Bain, Phil Cunningham, Billy Bragg, Karine Polwart and Eddi Reader, was held for him in Edinburgh.
Dick Gaughan was inducted into the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame, in 2009.

A Legend of Strangford Lough
John Vinycomb
When fairies lived in this old land,
And kelpies held the streams,
Such nights were seen and music heard
As come to me in dreams.
To the lone peasant’s fond belief,
In legend wild and gory,
Of sprite benign and goblin dam’d,
Is due to this wondrous story:
How the rude savage glories most
In terrors weird and fearful,
While timid souls take up the tale
With sadd’ning hearts and tearful.
They saw in fairy-haunted earth
The elfins sport and play;
They heard unearthly music float
Between the night and the day,
And feared, if seen, to be bewitched,
Or carried under ground,
To dance by night in fairyland
To magic music’s sound.
They feared the moonlight’s baleful sheen
By lonely moor or river;
They feared the dreaded weird banshee
That wails for mortals over.
But more they feared the Sweet Merroe
That haunts the lonely shore,
For he who hears th’ enchanting strain
Is lost for evermore.
And who is there that has not heard
Of sirens of the sea,
The mirrow dread of Strangford Lough,
The Mermaid of Mahee?
The sea-maid there would of times haunt,
At evening’s silent close,
With tuneful harp and songs so sweet,
When from the waves she rose.
Her golden locks in freedom float
Around her lovely form;
Her beauteous face, with eyes so blue,
Deride the coming storm.
She thrills the air with melodie,
So sweet, so clear, so high,
That the lone fisher turns to hear,
And listen with a sigh.
For well he know he may not stay,
His earthly lot is over;
Follow he must beneath the waves
The Mermaid, as her lover.
And tales are told how many a one,
Lost in Loch Cuan’s tide,
Had heard the Mermaid’s charmed strain,
And fied with her to bide,
In coral caves beneath the waves,
Or sport by pearly strand;
Transformed by fairy sea-maid’s power
To Merman jovial band.
And once, ‘tis said, a holy monk,
On Mahee sacred soil,
Was lost to sight for many a day,
No more a priest to toil.
For he, beguiled by character’s strains,
Swiftly dived in after,
Nor had he thought of brethren,
Or Abbot’s hearty laughter.
For, married to a Mer-Mayden
At bottom of the sea,
He lived and frolic’d with the best,
Forgot was Isle Mahee.
Till once again her heard the chime
Of Matins sweetly sound,
And blessed himself – before he knew,
Transported was to ground.
Beside his round tower’s lofty pile
He knelt him down to pray,
And bade the brethren – this believe –
To swear by Saint Mochae.
And now in after years come back,
With mind distressed and hazy,
Told how he’d lived beneath the sea,
The brethren cried, “He’s crazy.”
The Abbot frowned with look severe,
Thought sadly of the man –
And maiden’s eye – then slowly said,
“We’ll put him under ban.”
Said he, “You’ll live and dream your dreams
Within your prison cell,
High in the round tower’s topmost round,
And ring the service bell.”

SAINTS AND MARTYRS for September 25
Bl. Mark Criado, Trinitarian martyr. He was born in Andujar, Spain, in 1522, and joined the Trinitarians in 1536 . Mark was martyred by the Muslim Moors in Almeria.
St. Egelred, 870 A.D. Benedictine monk at Crayland Abbey, Great Britain. He died with the abbot and many fellow monks at the hands of invading Danes.
ST. FIRMIN, BISHOP OF AMIENS AND MARTYRS
St. Vincent Strambi. Roman Catholic Priest and Bishop. He was expelled from his See when he refused to take an oath of alliance to Napoleon in 1808.
St. Finbar. He was the son of an artisan and a lady of the Irish royal court. Born in Connaught, Ireland and baptized Lochan, he was educated at Kilmacahil, Kilkenny, where the monks named him Fionnbharr (white head) because of his light hair; he is also known as Bairre and Barr. He went on pilgrimage to Rome with some of the monks, visiting St. David in Wales on the way back. Supposedly, on another visit to Rome the Pope wanted to consecrate him a bishop but was deterred by a vision, notifying the pope that God had reserved that honor to Himself, and Finbar was consecrated from heaven and then returned to Ireland. At any rate, he may have preached in Scotland, definitely did in southern Ireland, lived as a hermit on a small island at Lough Eiroe, and then, on the river Lee, founded a monastery that developed into the city of Cork, of which he was the first bishop. His monastery became famous in southern Ireland and attracted numerous disciples. Many extravagant miracles are attributed to him, and supposedly, the sun did not set for two weeks after he died at Cloyne about the year 633 A.D.
St. Caian, 5th century. A saint of Wales, England. He was the son or grandson of the local king of Brecknock. A church at Tregaian in Anglesey is named after him.
St. Ceolfrid, 716 A.D. Benedictine abbot of St. Paul Monastery at Wearmouth-Jarrow, England, also called Geoffrey. He was born in Northumbria in 642 and became a monk at Ripon. St. Benedict Biscop named him prior of Wearmouth, but he was too strict and was forced to leave. Accompanying St. Benedict to Rome in 678, Ceolfrid became the deputy abbot of St. Paul’s in 685. He and one young student were the only ones to survive the regional plague. He became the abbot in 690 and developed the twin monasteries into cultural centers. The Codex Amatianus, the oldest known copy of the Vulgate Bible in one volume, was produced at his command. He also trained St. Bede. In 716, Ceolfrid retired and started for Rome, dying on September 25 at Longres, in Champagne, France.
St. Fymbert, 7th century. Bishop of western Scotland. He was ordained by Pope St. Gregory the Great.
St. Mewrog. A Saint of Wales of whom no details are extant.

Scheme to stimulate seagrass growth#Scheme #stimulate #seagrass #growth
Seagrass is thought to be greater than trees at absorbing carbon A pilot scheme on Strangford Lough is trying to stimulate the growth of seagrass on the seabed by testing alternative mooring systems. Seagrass is a flowering plant able to live in seawater. Its ability to absorb carbon is thought to be greater than that of trees. According to Darren Rice of Newry, Mourne and Down District…

This is one of my favourite Gaughan songs, although not penned by him, it’s a traditional Scottish song from the 19th century entitled and tells the story of a Highland Scot who is mistaken for an Irishman.
Ma name’s Duncan Campbell fae the shire o Argyll A’ve traivellt this country for mony’s the mile A’ve traivellt thro Irelan, Scotlan an aa An the name A go under’s bauld Erin-go-Bragh
Ae nicht in Auld Reekie A walked doun the street Whan a saucy big polis A chanced for tae meet He glowert in ma face an he gied me some jaw Sayin whan cam ye owre, bauld Erin-go-Bragh?
Well, A am not a Pat tho in Irelan A’ve been Nor am A a Paddy tho Irelan A’ve seen But were A a Paddy, that’s nothin at aa For thair’s mony’s a bauld hero in Erin-go-Bragh
Well A know ye’re a Pat by the cut o yer hair Bit ye aa turn tae Scotsmen as sune as ye’re here Ye left yer ain countrie for brakin the law An we’re seizin aa stragglers fae Erin-go-Bragh
An were A a Pat an ye knew it wis true Or wis A the devil, then whit’s that tae you? Were it no for the stick that ye haud in yer paw A’d show ye a game played in Erin-go-Bragh
An a lump o blackthorn that A held in ma fist Aroun his big bodie A made it tae twist An the blude fae his napper A quickly did draw An paid him stock-an-interest for Erin-go-Bragh
Bit the people cam roun like a flock o wild geese Sayin catch that daft rascal he’s killt the police An for every freen A had A’m shair he had twa It wis terrible hard times for Erin-go-Bragh
Bit A cam tae a wee boat that sails in the Forth An A packed up ma gear an A steered for the North Fareweill tae Auld Reekie, yer polis an aa An the devil gang wi ye says Erin-go-Bragh
Sae come aa ye young people, whairever ye’re from A don’t give a damn tae whit place ye belang A come fae Argyll in the Heilans sae braw Bit A ne'er took it ill bein caad Erin-go-Bragh

USS Ranger and HMS Drake by Ronny Moortgat
The North Channel naval duel was a single action between USS RANGER (Captain John Paul Jones) and the Royal Navy ship HMS DRAKE (Captain George Burton) fought in April 1778 in the North Channel separating Ireland from Scotland .
Ranger entered Belfast Lough with the intention of seizing HMS Drake moored off Carrickfergus. Drake had been preparing for action, taking on Irish volunteers to be used for close-quaters combat although there  was a shortage of ammunition. Also absent were the gunner, master’s mate , boatswain and lieutenant. Drake got underway at about 8am but with wind and tide against it. A boat was sent to have a closer look at Ranger but the crew was captured and they revealed the number of volunteers onboard Drake .
With wind and tide more favourable in the afternoon Ranger moved slowly out but making sure never to get too far ahead of Drake. She was no match for Ranger being build as  a merchant ship and the hull had the wrong shape for rapid battle manoeuvres not designed to resist cannon fire.
The formalites completed they started to exchange broadsides with Drake having problems with their cannon and charges of powder. The combatants were very close together but Ranger made sure never to get too close for grappling knowing the presence of the hidden men on board Drake. Just under an hour of fight and Captain Burton was killed by musket fire. By that time Drake’s sails and rigging had been reduced to tatters and therefore being more or less immobilised and shortly after she had to strike her collars
