russ i was rewatching "the chosen people" (as one does) and i don't know what was up with that particular episode irt any potential differences in the directing and writing team (given it's all people who worked regularly on the show) but it feels like henry's dialogue was truly prime in that episode overall.. might have to make a gifset specifically for that one ep..

the chosen people is absolutely one of my favorite episodes ; ; i think mclean has some really great rapport with pat morita (i really wish he’d been in more episodes) and honestly some of henry’s best scenes are when he’s floundering in front of bureaucrats and the brass... something about the way his spine just totally disappears (but he has great moments of indignation too) and he flip flops between pathetic, possibly a bit drunk, and flirty o-o mclean works so well with guest stars tho...

i think in the podcast they mentioned oftentimes the cast members were coming up with their own scenes and dialogue (loretta and larry were mentioned but i think i’ve seen mclean and gary talked abt as well) so i do think they often were adding bits to their own scripts! and we have to admit mclean’s writing credits are fantastic

favorite characters: Okay, so it all starts with Matsunaga from Drunken Angel, then there’s Douzi from Farewell my concubine, Okuyama from The Face of Another, the character of Takeshi Kaneshiro on Fallen Angels (I can’t remember his name), lately I’m reading a lot of manga and I will have to name my dearest Nana Osaki, Shinobu Morita (from Honey & Clover), Kurama (from YYH) and I guess that’s all…I’m sure forgetting about someone here.  

dream job: I can’t choose just one. I want to write, not really sure about what, because lately I feel both comfortable writing small pieces of fiction and investigations. I’m deeply interested in cinema, so it would be nice to do something related to that too…but music is also my passion. And then there’s architecture, which is a big part of my world. There are so many things to do, I feel I would be happy to at least do one of these.

KK/CK SURVEY LETS GOOOOOO

IT’S THE YEAR 2021 AND YOU’RE OBSESSED WITH THE KARATE KID. HOW ARE YOU FEELING?: Oh man, good question. GREAT question. The short of it is that I’m feeling fantastic! I’ve gotten to talk to so many thoughtful, intelligent people through this fandom, and experienced some truly GAME CHANGING meta and fanworks. I’ve been in fandom space for a looong time but it’s been a while since I was involved in a community this close knit and productive (it might even be the most involved fandom experience I’ve ever had, go figure!). And I think that’s based on a couple different things, not the least of which is how...genuinely good KK and subsequently CK is?? Might be projecting but I feel like it’s a common rite of passage to get interested in CK and go back to watch the Karate Kid and just be caught off guard by it. It’s so good! It’s a good film!! It contains so many intriguing themes (all the ways in which Daniel is an outsider, California as an idea, teachers and fathers, to name a scant few) and it’s grounded in incredible performances by Macchio, Morita, Schue, Zabka, Heller, Kove. (Macchio especially, he’s such a star.) And it takes itself seriously! And the soundtrack is banging!! And - *I am yanked off stage by a cane* Also, its been fascinating to fully realize the shape of the original films impact on pop culture. Not saying its like, the Godfather or anything, but people know it! They like it!

So yeah, I’m pretty happy with where I’m at :)

DID YOU GROW UP WITH TKK OR ARE YOU NEW TO THE SERIES?: Ok so, funny story, I never watched TKK growing up but I did, inexplicably, really like the Jaden Smith version?? Like I saw it in theaters twice. Foreshadowing!

WE GOTTA DO THE BASICS. FAVORITE CHARACTER: As cliché as it is it’s really, really hard for me to choose between Daniel and Johnny. Perhaps by the thinnest of margins I’ll say Daniel.

FAVORITE SHIP: ....... ;) (Its Lawrusso by a wide margin LMAO)

UNDERRATED CHARACTER: ok part of me wants to say Bobby Brown??? hes magnificent isn’t he WAIT NO I’m going to say Lucille. I also feel like we don’t talk enough about incredible that casting is, she and Daniel look SO related (also if I were to emotionally expand to CK I think I would say Hawk but idk what that says about me...)

UNDERRATED SHIP (DON’T SAY THERAPY, LOL): Hmmm I don’t know if I’d call it underrated because I don’t necessarily want it to be...rated higher...but I think Johnny and Ali’s relationship is fascinating. I always think about her telling Daniel the rules of the tournament, which she obviously knew from dating Johnny. And how much did she know about his home life???

WAX ON, WAX OFF OR SWEEP THE LEG?: Song wise? both are fun. I thank the shrine of Mr. Zabka everyday for the mv of sweep the leg tho

WHICH OF DANIEL’S DUMB LITTLE OUTFITS IS YOUR FAVORITE?: GODDDD this is hard considering I once spent three hours ranking all of his outfits with my friend. the red hoodie from the dojo scene is so elite...that or the blue tank top 

CHARACTER FROM THE FILMS YOU MOST WANT TO RETURN, WHO’S NOT TERRY SILVER: One of the ONLY things I truly enjoyed about KK3 was Jessica. What a queen! What a bro! And her apartment was amazing!!! And if they bring her back they can clarify that she’s CLEARLY a lesbian

SCENE THAT LIVES IN YOUR HEAD RENT-FREE: oooof. a la @nomercyonlytears it would have to be the tournament scene (for Johnny) (just heartbreaking! Just genuinely gut-wrenching!). besides that maybe the restaurant scene with Daniel & his mom. AND THE S3 FINALE FIGHT OH MY GOD

WHAT’S YOUR TRAINING MONTAGE SONG?: oh I just had a thought and that thought is “Hey Bulldog” by the Beatles so that’s what I’m going with!

IT’S THE CROSSOVER EVENT OF THE CENTURY! WHICH TV SHOW ARE YOU COMBINING WITH COBRA KAI FOR AN HOUR-LONG SATURDAY NIGHT SPECIAL?: I sat here for ages trying to think of the perfect show that would not only be funny, but has the same tone as CK. that being said when HSMTMTS/CK sweeps the Emmys...what then, what then?? (Daniel and Johnny do salsa choreography together, idk I haven’t watched the show ajksdklj)
