When you're a Pope, nobody is going to say no to you. You can walk right into any car dealership, point to your goofy huge hat, and drive off in anything fresh and new that catches your eye. Unfortunately, I'm not (currently) a Pope. There are a lot of reasons for this, ranging from the spiritual (not Catholic) to the physical (horrific neck injury in high school causing lack of giant hat-wearing ability.) So I have to buy my new cars just like anyone else does: by waiting 45 to 50 years after their release and then pulling them out of a frozen-over swamp.

Now, depending on what part of the world you're from, you may be wondering why I specified a frozen swamp. Doesn't snow and cold make it much harder to do everything, and cause an unbroken line of scarring pain and profanity to emerge the first time you bonk your flimsy flesh hand on a piece of cold, unyielding metal in the vicinity? Yes, but it also means that I don't have to put on my swim trunks, the image of which many popular mens' fashion magazines have defined as "unsettling." As a side bonus, whatever used to live inside the car is probably dead by now, or at least Encino Man'd out the yin-yang. Most likely, we'll find out for sure about that last one in mid-April when everything in the trunk thaws out.

There's another problem, of course. These cars aren't always "free." If you are not particularly attuned to the unique nature of shitbox-gathering, you might be surprised at this fact. Aren't I helping these poor farmers dispose of a decrepit automobile? Won't they be grateful for my hard effort? Unlikely: you don't become a tax-break-gathering petit-bourgeois hobby farmer without being aware of the value of a buck, and you don't obtain a harem of fine Detroit pseudosteel unless you're willing to be a hard negotiator at the auctions in the first place. This, like the Pope thing, is a fact of life. Which is also why you have to do the extraction in the dark, and hope that they don't have night-vision goggles.

#TBT to 2016 today and this 1979 Cadillac Coupe DeVille D’Marchand. "Regional" and "Seasonal" special models were once a Detroit staple, particularly in the 1950s and again in the 1970s with models as obscure as the fifties Dodge Coronet “Texan” to the Oldsmobile Cutlass “Starburst.” They fell away as rationalization dictated lower costs, with special metal pieces on cars like the Texan giving way mostly to graphics on cars like the Starburst. But they paved the way for cars like "designer" Lincolns and AMCs, and later Eddie Bauer and Nautica Fords. But Cadillac continued to offer seasonal models long after most other brands - well into the late 1980s, and this rare bird is of the old school. - Offered for just one year, 1979, the D'Marchand was also called the Chicago Edition or the Islander depending on where it was sold. They were all slate firemist over black, with a matching black-and grey leather interior and a silver vinyl top, and their special trim and interior pieces were largely installed at the factory. They were sold through the biggest Cadillac stores on a regional basis with some final touches - dash plaques and labels - added by the dealership. They were mechanically identical to a regular Coupe DeVille, but the point was style and exclusivity. - The basic downsized ‘77-’79 DeVilles were already a good performing car in a time of reduced performance - a big 425 V8 helped - and won praise early on for their modernized road manners. Cadillac offered many personalization touches for 1970s customers, and on the DeVille alone there dozens of paint combinations in single and two-tone and also a less-specialized “special,” the faux-convertible top Phaeton offered on coupes and sedans. - Earlier in the 1970s, dealer-accessorized cars with special vinyl tops or grills had also been a profitable and popular sideline and some specials were entirely dealer created, so it’s possible inspiration came from those cars for the D’Marchand. Exact numbers are unknown, but only a few hundred cars were built across the several different names. Lloyd Bridges a B-movie actor and TV star, had a solid and long lasting Hollywood career and stole his share of scenes. Here are a few:

Deputy Marshal Harvey Pell in High Noon. D: Fred Zinneman (1952). Bridges, in probably the highest point of the movie career he quit for television, plays Gary Cooper’s right hand man, who is only too happy to help him make a stand against the outlaws coming to kill him – if he is named the new Marshall. “I can’t do that,” Cooper’s Will Kane says. “Why not?” “If you don’t know, it’s no use me telling you.” For the rest of the movie, in a perfectly etched demonstration of craven opportunism, Bridges proves him right. Cooper might have gotten the Oscar for this Western allegory of McCarthyism, but Bridges, who was briefly blacklisted himself (he recanted and named names), may have given the most crucial performance.

Steve McCroskey in Airplane! D: Jim Abrahams, David and Jerry Zucker (1980). For most of his career Bridges concentrated on TV, with adventure shows like Sea Hunt, The Loner, (Whose producer, Gene Rodenberry, almost cast him as Captain Kirk) and lots of TV movies where he portrayed the kind of tough but colorless heroes he spoofed in this wildly popular disaster-film parody and joke factory. As airport tower manager McCroskey, he was the straight man for the um…..flamboyant… Air Traffic Controller Johnny ([reading a map] “Johnny what can you make out of this?” “This? Why, I can make a hat or a brooch or a pterodactyl….”). He also had the running joke “I picked the wrong week to quit smoking.” Then drinking, then amphetamines, ending up with sniffing glue. He did a 1982 sequel, as well as the Top Gun parody Hot Shots (1993) and Jane Austen’s Mafia! (1998).

Homer S. Ferguson in Tucker: The Man and His Dream D: Francis Ford Coppola (1988). Bridges has a short scene as an influential Michigan Senator in which he takes a very short “walk me to the car” meeting with automobile visionary Preston Tucker (Played by his son Jeff) where he is the soul of geniality, praising him for a dealership idea, humming a popular song, quoting Tucker’s line about Detroit’s Big Three companies (“tried for murder eh?” [chuckle]) then in the car and off. “What was that all about?” says Tucker, “Did he say anything? What did he say?” “He said,” answers his partner Abe Karatz (Martin Landau) “stay out of the car business or he’ll cut your noogies off.” The Elder Bridges was uncredited, on the screen for maybe two minutes, and stole one of the few scenes in the movie that I’ve never forgotten.

FORD: Q2 volume off 33% with gains for just 2 nameplates

DETROIT — Ford Motor Co.'s second-quarter U.S. light-vehicle sales fell 33 percent, slightly less than most of the industry, as it was battered by the coronavirus pandemic and a massive drop in fleet orders.

Sales to daily rental companies plummeted 94 percent during the quarter as demand for such services dried up, with a majority of people under stay-at-home orders. Ford said retail sales in the quarter fell 14 percent, although its retail share grew an estimated full percentage point to 13.3 percent.

"Retail for the industry was a lot better than people would have thought back in March," Mark LaNeve, Ford vice president, U.S. marketing, sales and service, told Automotive News.

Sales of F-Series pickups, the automaker's most popular vehicle line, dropped 23 percent in the quarter, although Ford said it grew an estimated 2.6 percentage points in retail share. The automaker last week unveiled a redesigned F-150 pickup that's expected to go on sale this year. Ford is planning to stagger the launch at its Dearborn. Mich., and Kansas City, Mo., assembly plants so it can continue building the outgoing pickup at one as the other factory changes over to the new model.

Overall, Ford Motor sedan sales dropped 60 percent, SUV deliveries fell 30 percent, and pickup/van volume fell 27 percent during the latest period. All but two nameplates — the Ranger midsize pickup and Explorer large crossover — posted sales declines.

LaNeve said he's hopeful that Ford and the rest of the industry will continue to recover in the third quarter, although the automaker is monitoring states where coronavirus cases continue to rise. LaNeve said he just returned from a tour of 10 dealerships and was impressed with the social distancing measures they have implemented.

"There's no way for me to predict it," he said. "We've had almost no reports of outbreaks within our dealerships. If the governors close those states down, there's nothing we can do about it. But we're looking for the business to continue moderately improving, and we're hoping for the best in terms of containing the virus."
