POSSIBLE GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE OR CONTRACT WORK FOR TAXI DRIVERS
POSSIBLE GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE OR CONTRACT WORK
The latest LTDA members email 25/03/20
We are receiving lots of calls and emails from members asking whether they should take alternative paid work they may have been offered, carry on trying to work the cab, or stay at home and await some news on possible financial assistance from the government.
As with everything at the moment much of it is an unknown. Can you go to work? Yes, but it is very much a personal choice, many fleet drivers have returned cabs and many mushers have decided to stay home, it is not for me, the LTDA or anyone to tell members what to do, it is very much your decision.
The Chancellor announced yesterday he was looking at a package for the self employed, stating it was "complicated" and that it will take some time. It is likely that any package delivered will be based on a percentage (80%?) on previously declared earnings, probably profit and not gross earnings, possibly an average taken over 3 years, but nothing is certain.Once something is delivered it is likely that it will take time to process claims and even longer to actually deliver some money. We are lobbying as hard as we can and our Parliamentary colleague Wes Streeting MP (Ilford North Lab) repeatedly questioned and pushed the chancellor very hard for decisive and quick action in the House yesterday.
We are also lobbying very hard to try and secure some work for those drivers who want it. Yesterday I wrote to the Minister of State for Public Health, National Pharmaceutical Association and the Royal Pharmaceutical Association trying to secure delivery contracts for the NHS and chemists struggling to get supplies, the letters can be read at the bottom of the web page here... https://ltda.us17.list-manage.com/track/click…
As with everything we do at the LTDA, we try to keep the trade united, and I managed to get an open letter from all of the trade published in todays Telegraph. You can read that here... https://ltda.us17.list-manage.com/track/click…
We also managed to get a question asked at Prime Ministers Question Time. Long time friend of our trade, and APPG member, Sir Charles Walker MP, asked the Prime Minister to mobilise the taxi trade to help the NHS, referring to us as "Like the Spitfire Pilots of 1940 'itching' to get involved and help" The Prime Minister responded by stating it had already been raised in our (governments) considerations, he omitted to say repeatedly by the LTDA, and went on to say "Black Cab drivers are a fantastic, unsung service, who I am sure can rise to this challenge" The clip really is worth watching please see/download it here... https://ltda.us17.list-manage.com/track/click…
Taxi licensing, MOTs and NSL are all far from clear at this moment. NSL are shut and many members cannot get their cab licensed. I have emailed, called and written to TfL who are fully aware and who's only response has been a notice saying they are aware and deciding what to do. It can be read here... https://ltda.us17.list-manage.com/track/click…
This is just not good enough, the government have suspended MOT testing and extended any expiring MOTs for 6 months, TfL should do the same with licence plates, I will keep onto them repeatedly until we get a decision.
I will keep you updated as things progress, we have also just published the latest issue of Taxi with the usual news and information, it can be read here... https://ltda.us17.list-manage.com/track/click…
Best Regards
Steve McNamara General Secretary
