A Glass Cento
This cento pulls lines from all the poets in the August issue of Glass: A Journal of Poetry: myself, Bernard Ferguson, Andrea Blancas Beltran, Micah Goodrich, Rochelle Harris, Liz Flint-Somerville, Natalie Solmer, Donna Vorreyer, Nikoletta Nousiopoulos, Kristina Mottla, Emari DiGiorgio, Kristen Rouisse, Stephen Wardell, Geoff Anderson, and Lori Lamothe. I play fast and loose with punctuation at the end of some lines but keep capitalization and spacing. It practically wrote itself–during my first perusal of the issue, I selected a brief excerpt from each poem that reverberated with lines pulled from the previous, and this is what emerged. The title comes from editor Anthony Frame’s “Poem for My Nieces on the Eve of the Next War.”
I Wish I Could Tell You We Were Beautiful
Facing anywhere but forward
when the face of someone he thought
was dead comes walking from the field &
The ghost of her mixes then rolls the dough
there is nothing quite so suffocating as a night sky
we stand in the wind of a train
because their flight skipped
some important questions
Give me all your succulent
and your celebratory owl
when I slice at the swell
of the skin’s blue-green river—
and sail into the water I avoided
then why dream of blue clapboard
siding, windows with its eyes
Rock worn smooth by amniotic waves,
tide of breath: this ectopic love affair
On shore, the fire’s throat
opens, embers
Never never never
remember your parents are people. Now, they’re
daguerreotypes
because my
mother is on the steps
and I am afraid
to see her face
its shape a bell rippling
from some unseen center.
