Cuphead: Isle of Memories

*Hey guys! I'm back with another episode! Finally! I'm so sorry that it had been about a week since I last published a chapter. The uploads might be slower due to work and trying to get myself back in school. Anyway, this is published on October 5, 2023. Episode Seven: A Higher Calling

Mugman snapped his eyes open with a soft gasp.

He sat up and almost hit his head on the ceiling with a grunt. He realized that he was in Elder Kettle’s house in his bedroom he shared with his brother. When he looked down, he didn’t see Cuphead there. The sun was shining, providing warmth in the bedroom. He hopped off of the top bunk and walked out into the hallway. He tiptoed down the hallway and looked around to find that everything was as he remembered. He went downstairs and blinked his eyes. The blue electric outlines of familiar people in the living room was only visible for Mugman.

Mugman noticed his mother entering the house while Elder Kettle was playing with him and his brother as babies.

“Hey, Kettle, I’m here to pick up the boys,” his mother spoke to Elder Kettle. “Thank you so much for watching them.”

“Oh, of course. They’re no trouble at all,” Elder Kettle responded with a grin. “You know what’s funny? I used to call your husband a cup head during the war. Now, I’m calling little Cooper here a cup head.”

“Is he Cuphead Jr,” his mother teased.

“Nah, just Cuphead. Oh, guess what nickname I came up for little Melvin?”

“What?”

Elder Kettle held little Mugman up on his feet and held his arms out as if the baby was showing off his muscles and said in a manly voice, “Mugman.”

Mugman’s mother giggled and shook her head. “Hehehe, Cuphead and Mugman. I need to tell Murray that. I’m sure that will cheer him up.”

“How is he doing anyway?” Elder Kettle asked. “I heard what happened with Tremaine and it’s horrible. Is Jack truly the blame?”

“No,” she said with a frown. “We don’t know who’s to blame. Murray was determined to find a cure for it.”

“You think he’s being reckless?”

“Yeah. I mean, he just helped Jack escape from prison. I’m scared that both him and Jack will get caught by the police and then they’ll both end up in jail.”

“That boy…” Elder Kettle said with a sigh.

“And he’s going behind Hunter’s back with making the cure…and you know Hunter and his connections with the Night Stalkers.”

The old tea kettle nodded his head. “He was also behind the murder of his parents all those years ago and killed a therapist from a mental hospital. I’m surprised the police hadn’t done anything about it.”

“That’s because Hunter has the police in his pockets,” she replied. “I’m scared of him, Kettle. I’m scared that he’ll hurt Murray and the kids. I want to be able to save Murray…but I’m scared that he’s going to put himself in further danger and I can’t save him. He and I have been getting into fights and…I’m sure the kids don’t wanna hear it.”

He frowned at her and sighed. “As far as I know Murray, he’ll be just fine. You know, he’ll do anything to protect you and the boys, right?”

“Of course, I know that.”

“Well, I’m sure you are trying the best you can, Lily. But the thing that I am trying to teach Murray and now I’m telling you this is that…you can’t save everyone. No matter how much you try, you just can’t. You’re not a superhero. We all want to be this superhero archetype, saving everybody and being praised for saving lives. But the truth is, you can’t save everyone. Murray thinks he can…and…that may lead to the boy’s death if he isn’t careful.”

Lily, Mugman’s mother, frowned and looked away.

Elder Kettle sighed. “I’ve lost a lot of good men during the war. Jack and Murray were the only ones who I knew survive. A lot of men sacrificed their lives to save each others, including mine. As much I want to thank them for it…I can’t help but feel this…guilt. I shouldn’t have lived through all of this, yet here I am…thanks to the sacrifices of my military brothers. Just promise me that you both will be safe along with the boys. If you ever need me to watch them, you let me know, okay?”

Lily smiled and nodded her head. “Yeah, I will. Thanks, Kettle.”

Mugman frowned and blinked to see the outlines disappeared, leaving the living room empty. He sighed and peered into the kitchen to find no one in there. Mugman heard a knock from the door and noticed the daylight changing into night rapidly. He decided to open the door and noticed his mother standing on the porch, shivering in the cold.

“Mama…?”

Lily left in a hurry, waving her hands to gesture the hooded assassins to chase after her.

Mugman knew what was going to happen next and shook his head, sobbing. He closed his eyes and opened them again, noticing someone in the distance. The figure was shiny to the point where he couldn’t tell who it was. Was it Gabriel?

Mugman decided to run to the shiny figure, hoping that it was Gabriel. But as he got closer and closer to the figure, he knew that it wasn’t Gabriel at all. First off, Mugman couldn’t see the figure’s face. The brightness could’ve easily blinded him if he hadn’t blocked the light with his hand. Second off, the figure had no color on his skin. He didn’t have fur or porcelain skin. The figure just had arms where Mugman could see through them except for the holes in the figure’s palms that were dark red.

“Oh there you are,” the figure said. “I figured I find you here.”

“Um…Gabriel?”

“No, I’m not Gabriel. He’s probably back where Angel and Demon are originally. I’ll find him and bring him out of there. He’s already calling for help several times. Here’s an idea, why don’t you take a walk with me to find Gabriel? I’m sure there’s a lot of things that you want to ask.”

Mugman nodded his head.

“Come on, then,” the figure urged, leading Mugman through the dark, snowy forest.

Mugman felt warmer walking alongside the figure. “If you’re not Gabriel, then who are you?”

“I am what you mortals call The Most High,” the figure spoke with a soft tone. “And you must be Mugman.”

Mugman nodded his head. “You’re way shorter than I imagined you being.”

The Most High chuckled. “Well, I live in this world as a lamb. You can imagine how short I am compared to most.”

The mug tilted his head. “Are you a lamb now?”

“No. Not really.”

“Then…what are you?”

“The Most High. The Alpha and the Omega. The Everlasting Father--.”

“Like an animal, human, dish—”

“No. I'm not any of those.”

“Huh…so, what do you do exactly?”

“Well, let’s see. I created this world within seven days, created mortals such as yourself, led a chosen group out of dangerous situations for thousands upon thousands of centuries, let them get captured, free them, let them get captured again, came down to earth, died, rose up, and give the mortals kind the best gift.”

“Really? What is it?”

“The Holy Spirit.”

Mugman gasped. “Oh! Is it like these powers I’m getting lately—?”

“Oh no, that’s different. That’s something the Calix Animi made. It didn’t come from me,” The Most High answered. “The Holy Spirit is…a part of me. It’s a part of me that connects you to me. Something that will guide you, teach you, and help you on your journey through life. The Holy Spirit is me and The Son is me and The Father is me. I am all three.”

Mugman looked up at the Most High in confusion.

“Most mortals are confused by that. Even scholars have no idea what I meant by it. Maybe it’s something that I will explain someday once you come to Heaven.”

Mugman looked ahead to realize they were crossing the Astral plane. When he looked behind him, he only saw one set of footprints on the snow that belonged to Mugman.

The Most High noticed the mug’s troubled face. “What seems to be the trouble?”

Mugman looked ahead of him. “Are you invisible or something? Like there is only one set of footprints belonging to me. It’s almost like I’m walking through all of this alone.”

“But you’re not alone. Let me ask you something, Mugman. Do you believe in ghosts?”

The mug nodded his head.

“Do you believe in demons and the Devil?”

Mugman nodded his head again.

“So, do you also believe that there are angels and the Most High?”

“Well, I’m seeing you, am I?”

“In your dreams, yes. But once you wake up, you will see and think that I’m invisible. But know that I’m still here. Even if you can’t see me. Even if you think I’m invisible. I’m still here and I’m still walking beside you in life. When you see one set of footprints throughout your life, that is when I carried you.”

“But how can you carry me through troubles if I can’t feel you doing so? Most of the time I feel alone and useless. I can’t save my own girlfriend from the Devil and my brother’s soul got taken by the Devil one time. Now I’m scared to lose him again. If I have powers…why do I feel so powerless? I can’t control myself. I feel like I’m in pain, even though it’s in my head. I wish I can save everyone.”

The Most High sighed sadly. “But you’re not alone and you’re definitely not useless. You have made efforts saving your brother. You have fought your battles against Hunter and his assassins. You have been tortured and hurt lately. I want you to know that I am willing to fight your battles and I will stand by you.”

Mugman perked his head and looked up at the Most High, covering his eyes. “What about my brother and my friends? Will you stand by them too?”

“I will.”

Mugman nodded his head.

“Any more questions?” The Most High asked Mugman.

Mugman shook his head. “I can’t think of any.”

The Most High looked ahead of them. “I believe that’s the end of our walk.”

Mugman glanced to see Gabriel coming towards them, exiting from the skull of the Devil. Mugman brightly smiled with a gasp and ran over to Gabriel, jumping into his arms.

Gabriel stumbled back. “Whoa there, lad.”

The Most High grinned to see them reunited. He walked over to Gabriel, who covered his eyes and bowed to him by kneeling without hesitation.

Mugman was confused for a moment, earning a small chuckle from the Most High. Mugman kneeled hesitantly without being told to do it.

"You both can stand on your feet," The Most High gestured them both to stand on their feet.

They stood on their feet and covered their eyes to shield from the brightness.

“Before you wake up, Mugman, there’s someplace you need to go. There will be a group of lost people hiding in the other isle. Find them and bring them to the Howling Aces,” The Most High stated. “I think you might have accidentally brought someone with you.”

“Wait, what?” Mugman uttered in confusion. It was sudden the mug noticed his veins glowing blue. “Wait, what’s going on?”

“I don’t know,” Gabriel answered.

The Most High kneeled down to meet the same eye-level as Mugman. “You may have accidentally teleported yourself somewhere else along with taking someone else with you.”

“Who?”

Before the Most High can answer that question, everything turned blue in Mugman’s vision. Mugman couldn’t hear what the Most High said before he could feel himself waking up.

Mugman felt like he was falling from the sky.

Wait, he was falling from the sky!

Mugman crashed through the roof of a familiar house with a scream, slammed against the hard floor. He groaned in pain and sat up to rub his ceramic head. A sudden realization came to him that he was in the old bedroom at Elder Kettle’s house. He blinked when he heard someone else screaming and crashing through the roof. It came from downstairs.

“Ow…” someone groaned.

Why did it sound like Elder Kettle?

Mugman got up to his feet and hurried out of the bedroom. He rushed down the hallway and peeked over to find Elder Kettle laying face-flat on the floor in the living room.

“Elder Kettle!” Mugman gasped in shock and ran downstairs. He hurried by the old tea kettle’s side and helped him up on his feet. “Are you okay?”

“Uh, I don’t know. One minute I was checking your temperature and then the next minute I was struck by lightning. Then I was lifted up from the sky like I’m in some sort of a tube and then I crashed,” Elder Kettle uttered while rubbing his head.

Mugman gasped. “Oh gosh…”

Elder Kettle dusted himself off and looked up at Mugman. “Wait…you’re awake…”

“Yeah…”

“And we’re here…how did we get here?”

Mugman tried to remember for a moment until he remembered what a voice said. “Teleportation?”

“What?”

“I think I accidentally teleported both of us…here.”

Elder Kettle was silent for a moment with a deep breath in. “HOW?!”

“Shh!” Mugman shushed him. “We’re in the different isle now. Who knows what lurks around here?”

Elder Kettle looked around the place they were in, noticing the house they were in was ransacked with black soot around the house. “Is this…?”

Mugman frowned in recognition of the place. “Yeah.” He walked around the house, tearing up at the condition it was in. He tried holding it together until the tears streamed down on his face. He collapsed on his knees, sobbing and covering his face with his hands.

Elder Kettle gazed at the mug teen softly, frowning at the sight. “Aw, c’mere, boy.”

He hugged Mugman, who embraced him back and sobbed into his shoulder.

Elder Kettle hugged Mugman tighter with a soft sigh. “It hurts to see the place like this…but…why are we here?”

“There will be a group of lost people hiding in the other isle. Find them and bring them to the Howling Aces.”

Mugman blinked his eyes open and broke away from the old tea kettle, wiping tears away.

“What’s going on?” Elder Kettle’s asked.

“There’s a group here…we need to find them! Come on!” Mugman said while running out the door.

“Hey, Mugman! Wait!”

Once Mugman opened the door, they widened their eyes at the sight in front of them. The once beautiful forest was burned with almost no trees around them. They could see Porkrind’s shop from there, which…was also burned down. The city ahead of them had skyscrapers destroyed and tumbled.

“Our home…” Elder Kettle uttered with tears.

Mugman hardened his gaze ahead of them. “C’mon.”

“Wait, where are you going?!”

With that said, Mugman and Elder Kettle headed into the city, hoping to find the group of people the Most High mentioned in Mugman’s dream.

Mugman and Elder Kettle entered the Inkwell City, smelling blood and smoke. They searched through the city for a supposed group that they were supposed to rescue. The streets were empty with broken cars and messy sidewalks with papers scattered on the concrete. Pieces of glass shattered across the street and dead bodies were everywhere. The sound of flies buzzing sent shivers down the boys’ spines.

“So…how do you know about a group trap here? Is it one of your, um, prophetic moments?” Elder Kettle asked with a brow raised.

“Uh…it’s a bit complicated,” Mugman responded. “I think I spoke to the Most High.”

“I’m sorry, what? The Most High? Are you sure you’ve seen Him?”

“Yeah, he introduced me as such…why?”

“What does He look like?”

“Uh…I can’t really see…his head just glows bright.”

“Huh, strange. Most people can’t claim that they have seen the Most High. You have to nearly die for that to happen. But I don’t think you’ve nearly died,” Elder Kettle said while pondering.

They heard growling noises, causing them to tense up and look to find something digging through the corpse of a woman. It was a red and blue clown eating the remaining guts of a citizen.

Mugman gulped, trembling a bit at the sight.

“I think we should make a run for it,” Elder Kettle whispered.

They watched the clown monster tore through the dead woman’s stomach. Before they could make their escape, they were grabbed from behind and pulled into a dark alleyway. Their mouths were covered by more than one stranger’s hands.

The memory of Hunter grabbing Mugman hostage from behind immediately flashed in his mind, his veins glowed blue.

“Mugman, wait—!”

Mugman bit down the hand that covered his mouth and a sudden burst of electricity pushed someone back with a yelp.

“PHILIP!” A woman’s cry caught Mugman’s attention.

Mugman snapped out of his memories and looked behind him to see the man in a brown suit and top hat having his veins glowing blue. He noticed the blonde woman with three ponytails, one above her head, one on her left side of her head, and one on her right side. She was examining her husband to see if he was okay.

She turned to glare at Mugman. “What the bloody hell is wrong with you?! You’ve nearly killed my husband!”

“Sally—”

“I-I’m sorry,” Mugman started to sniffle, causing the woman, Sally, and her husband, Philip, to soften their gazes. “I-I didn’t know. I-I didn’t know.”

“Hey! Don’t you yell at him! You gave us quite a scare,” Elder Kettle added. “We thought you’re one of the demons.”

“Maybe we should have better methods of taking newcomers in,” Philip said while rolling his shoulder from the impact.

“I suppose you’re right,” Sally said with a sigh. She turned to them. “We’re sorry for scaring you. But we did save your lives from that infected clown.”

“He hadn’t attacked us yet,” Elder Kettle uttered with a brow raised.

“Yet,” Sally repeated. “Come on, let’s get you guys somewhere safe.”

She gestured them to follow her and her husband. Elder Kettle and Mugman exchanged gazes at each other with shrugs. They followed after Sally and Philip through the alleyways of the destroyed city.

“Is the clown the only infectee in this city?” Elder Kettle asked Sally and Philip.

“No, there are far more infectees than Beppi. There’s also the sugar baroness, but…she’s somewhere else. We don’t have any idea where,” Sally explained the situation.

“Baroness Von Bon Bon,” Mugman uttered her name.

“Correct,” Sally responded. “Oh! There’s also that Cala Maria girl. She’s not infected, but the Night Stalkers have captured her and kept her hidden underground somewhere. We are also not sure where she is.”

“Oh, Brineybeard won’t be happy to hear that,” Mugman muttered to himself.

Sally and Philip tiptoed down the last alleyway and peeked around to see if the coast was clear with Mugman and Elder Kettle following them.

“Come on, the hide-out is right here,” Philip urged them while they ran off towards what used to be a theater.

Philip looked around and knocked on the door like he was knocking a secret code.

The brown rat appeared above the light and furrowed his brow. “Vat’s zee bassvord?”

“Password?” Sally said with a brow arched. “We’ve never set up a password.”

“Vu can’t get in if vu don’t know zee bassvord. Blain und zimble,” the rat responded.

Elder Kettle and Mugman gasped in recognition of the rat.

“Werner?” Mugman muttered.

Elder Kettle drew his brows together. “I got a password for you. Dynamite.”

Werner, the brown rat, snapped his attention to Elder Kettle and growled, dropping the German accent. “You.”

“Yeah, me,” Elder Kettle snarled back.

Sally looked back and forth between Werner and Elder Kettle. “You know each other?”

“Ja, ve’fe met pefore. Vu plew off mein tail!” Werner barked at the tea kettle.

“You tried to take over my cottage! You tried to blow up my boys! And you ate my surprise cake!” Elder Kettle called the rat out.

“Ha! Your brecious cubs are fun to mess vith. Esbecially zat one pent-schtraw cup of yours. Anyvay, vu are not velcome here—”

“Werner,” Sally scolded the rat. “They’re not infected with Tremaine. Anyone who is not infected with Tremaine are welcome here.”

Werner groaned and rolled his eyes. “Vu exbect me to let in ein old tea kettle und his pig plue-nozed child? HA! Vu haffe ein zenze of humor.”

“I’m serious, Werner,” Sally said with her hands on her hips.

“I am too,” Werner stated.

Mugman drew his brows together. “There are infectees out here and you’re going to keep us out over petty things?! Look, it’s all forgiven and forgotten, just let us in!”

Werner noticed Mugman’s veins glowing blue, his eyes widening in fear. “Zince ven did vu effen get bovers?!”

“Just let us in, Werner. Don’t make me tell you again,” Sally growled.

Werner sighed and pushed the button in front of him, letting the door open. “Zere. Get in pefore more infectees schow up.”

“Thank you, Werner,” Sally said while entering the theater with Philip, Elder Kettle, and Mugman. She smiled at Elder Kettle and Mugman. “Well, boys, welcome to the hide-out.”

Elder Kettle and Mugman looked around to find some familiar and unfamiliar faces. Mugman instantly recognized the carrot, the onion, and the potato eating soil at the corner of the theater near the front door. They froze when they saw Elder Kettle, who gasped in recognition.

“MY BABIES!!” Elder Kettle replied while taking out a knife.

Sally ran towards Elder Kettle. “Whoa, whoa, they’re not food. They’re actually alive.”

“But, they’re my babies. I watered them and grew them up,” Elder Kettle said innocently.

“Actually, we’re orphans,” the potato, Sal Spudder, responded.

“We’re orphans?” Ollie, the onion, uttered. He had tears welling up in his eyelids. “Oh, that’s so sad—”

“Ollie, we talked about this. If you cry, you will let out a stench that will cause all of us to cry. Don’t you cry again,” Sal scolded.

Mugman felt someone jumping into his cup head, causing him to tense up until he realized it was Werner popping out of his porcelain.

“Are vu zure vu’re really orbhans?” Werner asked with a brow arched.

“Yeah, we are,” the carrot, Chauncey, answered. “Ask Mugman. He knows.”

Elder Kettle glanced over at Mugman.

“Uh-oh, looks like vu’fe peen hiting zomezing for ein vile,” Werner said with a smirk.

Mugman rubbed his hands. “Uh…well…you know how you put me and Cuphead in charge of raising the plants.”

“You put yourselves in charge, not me,” Elder Kettle responded. “But go on…”

Mugman laughed nervously. “Well, uh, we found them in the shed, eatin’ our soil. They said they would watch over the plants while we go out to the movies…sooo, we went out to the movies and…they threw a party at your front yard while you’re gone. Cuphead and I try to stop the party…and…in the morning, they ended up draining your babies.”

“WHAT?!” Elder Kettle barked, glaring at the Root Pack.

Sal, Ollie, and Chauncey laughed nervously.

“Are vu trying to draw zee infectees’ attenzion? Pecauze vu’re doing ein great chob,” Werner said sarcastically.

“Will you all just shut up?!” A mad human scientist shouted, repairing a large robot who was blowing a pink bubble and popping it. “I’m trying to work on my son and your shouting was getting annoying.”

“We’re sorry, Dr. Kahl,” Philip apologized.

“Zince ven did vu refer zee biece of medal as your zon?” Werner questioned.

“He’s not a piece of metal,” Dr. Kahl growled and then turned to the robot and pat his arm when the robot looked offended by Werner’s statement. “It’s okay, son. It’s okay. He didn’t mean it like that.”

“Yes, I did,” Werner responded.

“Are you trying to pick a fight today, Werner?” the bee queen named Rumor Honeybottoms questioned while approaching the group with her arms crossed.

“He’s always trying to pick a fight. What else is new?” Sal replied.

“Alright, alright, everyone, simmer down,” Sally responded with a sigh. “We all need to work better together. Obviously, we all are not getting along. In a theater scenario, we all play a part in each other’s lives. If we work together, we will stop the Devil and this Tremaine madness once and for all. We will come out on top. Who’s with me?!”

There was dead silence in the theater.

“I appreciate the speech, dear, but everything is looking so bleak. There’s barely anyone alive in this city and soon, we might end up infected with Tremaine,” Rumor responded to Sally’s speech.

“But we can’t let bleakness and hopelessness hold us back from fighting back. We can’t just wait till the lights go out and the closing of the curtain to fight back. We have to work together and act now,” Sally replied, pumping her fists in the air.

“But look at us,” Sal argued. “We are a small army against the Devil’s big army. You think we can last long in a battlefield? No! We’re gonna die out there if we just work together and act now!”

Mugman widened his eyes while the group was arguing.

“I-Is this the group the Most High was talking about?” Mugman asked himself…hearing his own thought for some reason.

“Yes.”

Mugman gasped when he heard a familiar voice. He looked around, but he shook his head. He had to focus and look at the group. “Listen up!”

His voice caught everyone’s attention.

Mugman could feel the fright of being put on the spot, but he had to say something. “We don’t have to do either of those. Elder Kettle and I are at the other isle where there’s also a group hiding from infectees. It’s bigger than this group…not gonna lie. If we can get to the other isle, you all will be safer there than here.”

“That doesn’t sound like a bad idea,” Philip uttered.

“Wait, wait, wait, you’re telling me that there’s another isle having the same issues as us?” Sal questioned Mugman.

Mugman nodded his head firmly. “Yeah, they got weapons, medicines, and food—”

“Eh…we ain’t getting much food lately along with water,” Elder Kettle interrupted Mugman. “But I’m sure we can all put our heads together and find some creative solutions to gather food and water.”

“Well, what are we waiting for? Let’s go!” Ollie responded.

“Wait, wait, if we try to fly across the ocean, the storms will get us,” Dr. Kahl pointed out. “I can’t risk Sonny here. He can fly, but if a tornado hit him—he won’t be able to fly against it. Unless you have a creative solution to evade the storms.”

“Dr. Kahl has a point,” Rumor replied. “Unless there’s a way to evade the storms while flying across the ocean, the situation is completely hopeless.”

Mugman and Elder Kettle exchanged glances at each other.

“Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” Elder Kettle asked Mugman.

Mugman nodded his head. “I think so.”

“I really don’t want to ask this, but do you think you can do it again?” Elder Kettle asked.

“Do what again?” Sally asked.

Mugman tilted his head. “Wait…how did you get teleported here with me?”

“I don’t know. One minute I was checking your temperature and then the next minute—well, we got zapped and thrown here,” Elder Kettle responded.

Mugman gasped. “I think I have some idea.” He grabbed Elder Kettle’s hand and then held Sally’s hand. “Everyone hold hands.”

“What?!” They all shouted unison.

“Trust the process,” Elder Kettle ordered the others.

Sally grabbed Philip’s hand and tightened her grip lovingly. Philip grabbed Rumor’s hand, who just looked at him in confusion. Sal hesitantly grabbed Elder Kettle’s hand while Ollie was grabbing both Sal’s other hand and Chauncey’s hand. Chauncey grabbed Dr. Kahl’s hand while Dr. Kahl gripped his robot’s finger. Werner gripped the edge of Mugman’s ceramic head, watching the teen’s veins glowing blue.

“Uh, vat’s habening?” Werner asked, holding onto Mugman’s head tightly.

“Just trust the process,” Elder Kettle said with a smirk.

Werner gave Elder Kettle a withering glare. “I don’t trust vu und I don’t trust your pig plue-nozed cup—”

It was sudden they heard thunder and looked around.

“What’s happening?” Dr. Kahl questioned.

“I don’t know,” Sally uttered fearfully.

Mugman’s eyes glowed blue suddenly, waves of electricity raised up towards the ceiling. Werner was surprised he wasn’t getting electrocuted at the moment as he looked up to find the wooden ceiling creaking. Werner looked at the others and gasped to find that their veins were glowing blue along with his now. The rat looked around in fear until he heard thunder echoing in the distance.

It was sudden that a blue lightning struck through the ceiling, lifting them up like tractor beams. They disappeared from the theater without a trace.

Mugman felt like he was in the tube, but he was gripping Elder Kettle’s and Sally’s hand at the same time. He could hear everyone’s muffled screaming and cheering from mostly Werner. Mugman wasn’t sure what was going on and what was happening, but he knew they were going somewhere.

“WHOOO!!!! VE’RE FLYING!!! VE’RE FLYING!!!” Werner cheered with a laugh.

Now, they were falling from the sky. Mugman wasn’t sure how to react, his wings extended out of fear. When trying to lift the others, he couldn’t since Dr. Kahl’s robot was with them.

Dr. Kahl’s robot managed to used rockets under his feet to keep himself from crashing through the building. He landed on the ground catching everyone in his metal hands. Once everyone landed on the giant robot’s hand, Werner peeked out of Mugman’s head.

“Okay, I definidely trust zee mug,” Werner responded.

Everyone started to chuckle a bit, still trembling from the teleporation.

“How did you do that?” Sally asked with a brow raised.

“I-I don’t know…” Mugman uttered.

“HEY!”

Everyone widened their eyes and looked down to see Sergeant O’Fera standing by the giant robot’s feet. Dr. Kahl’s robot crouched down to get a better look at the dog soldier and placed the others on the ground.

“Do not fret, we’re not infected!” Sally informed O’Fera.

“Yeah, yeah, we’re good!” Sal shouted in fear.

O’Fera noticed Mugman awake with a gasp and hurried over to him. “Hey, you okay, kid? Your brother and your father are worried sick about you.”

Mugman laughed nervously when O’Fera was examining him like a worried mother would examine her child. “I-I’m fine, Sergeant. I’m fine.”

“Mugsy!”

Mugman heard Cuphead’s voice and was immediately tackled to the ground by his brother, causing O’Fera to wince back. Cuphead got back up on the ground with Mugman in his arms.

“You’re awake! You’re awake! And you teleported yourself and Elder Kettle! How did you do that?!” Cuphead rejoiced. “It doesn’t matter! All it matters is that you’re here and—WHOA!!!” Cuphead let go of Mugman as soon as he noticed Werner peering over the edge of Mugman’s porcelain head.

“Guten abend(good evening),” Werner responded in his German language.

“Hey, what are you doing in Mugman’s head? Get outta there!” Cuphead demanded.

“Whoa, whoa, it’s okay, Cuphead. We’re on good terms now,” Mugman reassured his brother.

Before Werner could object, O’Fera picked Werner up by the scruff of his neck. Werner started to throw fists.

“HEY! Vo giffes vu zee right to bick me up like zat, huh?! Huh?!” Werner growled at O’Fera.

O’Fera flicked Werner off while he screamed and crashed onto the ground.

Murray entered the scene and hugged his sons. “You okay, Mugman? What happened? You and Elder Kettle just disappeared without a trace. Where did you go? What happened?”

“Whoa, whoa, Murray, calm down. Calm down,” Elder Kettle calmed Murray. “Mugman’s fine. We’re all fine.”

“Except for them,” O’Fera pointed at Sal, Ollie, and Chauncey as the three vegetables trembled in fear of Captain Brineybeard staring at them with saliva dripping from the corner of his mouth as if he had been hungry.

Rumor rolled her eyes. “Hold on, I better step in.” She hurried to step between the hungry captain and the frightened vegetables.

“Sooo, are we all welcomed here?” Sally asked while holding her husband’s hand.

O’Fera smiled a bit. “Yeah. But I’ll be honest, we’re having trouble with food and water, but I’m sure we can figure out a way to feed more mouths.”

“We’ll do the best we can to help,” Philip responded with a nod.

“Well then, welcome aboard,” O’Fera responded with a gesture for the remaining individuals to head inside of the base.

Cuphead wrapped his arm around Mugman and pulled him inside where he was greeted by Chalice, Natalie, and Canteen. He smiled at them only to noticed Canteen’s arm in a sling. Mugman frowned when he noticed Canteen’s arm in a sling and remembered how it happened. He looked back to see the volcano, remembering Cassidy still there. His brows furrowed in quiet determination to get her out. But Cuphead was right when they were first trying to rescue Cassidy from Hell, they needed a full-proof plan to get her.

Have they came up with the full-proof plan while he was passed out?

Going to rank the next set of bosses in cuphead. I might have to go negative numbers since I'm including EVERY boss in cuphead. This is where it may get challenging!

14. Ribby and Croak - Very simply, a try hard stage. I love the first phase and the second phase, but how did the third phase take me so long to figure out to parry the lever? Plus, the RNG can go so wrong in your way, you could get all tiger platforms like I did and die about 100 times before you beat the boss. Never got all snakes. Though, I do like the bull platforms because it actually tests your reflexes. Not too entirely mad, just more like, I rage quit this one about 3 times before coming back and beating it🥰 talk about love not at first sight.

13. Hilda Berg - Now knowing how the UFOs work, it made the last phase so much easier. But, before that knowledge, nada! Holy Jesus and rice, no way could you dodge all the falling stars and UFOs. Bad RNG can happen so frequently, it's not even funny! Though, I love how unique this boss is, with the different transformations, the dodging mechanics is nice, and her tornados are so easy to maneuver around. Overall, you can easily get like 4 supers in this if you really try! But the last stage is a female dog!

12. Glumstone the Giant - not a big fan of thus boss. Really boring second phase, third phase is so much easier than the first two once you get the hang of it... AND THE FIRST PHASE MAKES YOU WANT TO QUIT ALREADY! The gnomes suck so much arse, and if one crawls up to you while the giant brings you the bear, it's GGs. Overall though, good and easy dodging, parrying is easy to gain supers, etc.

11. Sally Stageplay - Um.. why is there this easy of a boss towards the end of the game? I truly love the little break in between, but it kind of upsetted me how easy she was! Only complaint, bad RNG with babies throwing bottles out the window... and chaser, lobber, lightning power or the red OP guns are basically the only thing you can use towards the last phase.

10. The Root Pack - potato is very easy to dodge his attacks, even while getting S Rank; onion can either be avoided or attack on one side and EASIEST DODGES EVER!; Carrot is kind of tricky, especially starting out with only the pea shooter. Overall, easy as heck and a good first boss. Though, the radish causes so many problems, I SWEAR! But, the radish is an awesome hidden secret 🙃💗

9. Mr. Weezy - A mini boss that can cause mini problems with your mini amount of lives. Nice mini boss, but this cigar has got to go! Easy to kill with roundabout and a great break from the rest of the mini bosses. Only problem is, if you lose your MOJO with the pattern of dodging the flame balls, you're screwed.

8. Pip and Dot - basically tied with Mr. Weezy BUT has one better mechanic IMO. That is parrying LOL. I think the bird is too easy of a mini mini boss and easy to dodge platforms. Roundabout will get you right through this, plus you may gain a super here if you're lucky!

7. The Howling Aces - I'm actually surprised we this got here in this placement, but I freaking despised the heck out of this no doubt!... Until I realized how unique, clever, and easy this is. The first phase is legit dodging two little attacks. Second phase is the shortest (and one of the easiest in the game), and the last two phases were the real challenges. I love the turning us upside down though! Plus, it never made me dizzy one bit! Matter of fact, I think I got so good at the game by the time I got here, I beat this boss under 50 tries. THATS GOOD IN MY BOOK! overall, awesome concept and I'm glad this exists.. Plus dog pilot 🫣👨‍🚒📛

As I am getting down to the rest, I know we will have to go negative numbers, but just know this was probably harder than yesterday's. I'm excited to maybe finish it!

I watched the Mononoke Zashikiwarashi stage play!!

I watched the performances on 03/29 and 03/30, and I have so many Thoughts. But I’m on vacation and haven’t the spoons to draft them up coherently until I return home in a few days.

For now, I'll do a photo/art dump of my experience.

I arrived a few hours early to the theater (I had to take the train from Kyoto to Osaka, and built in time for potential navigational incompetence). While I waited for the theater to open up, cracked open my iPad and started painting in Procreate.

This is the exterior of Cool Japan Park Osaka's WW Hall. Shaking off a lot of rust from painting from observation, but I'm happy with how the colors came out.

This is the interior of the theater. I was forbidden from taking photo and video of this space, so I painted it it, albeit messily because of the short time I had before the performance began.

Winding back time a bit, here's the cardboard cutout stand the theater staff set out right before they started admitting people into the lobby:

It was a bit windy that day, so it actually snapped in half mere minutes after its installation lmao. Not pictured is the flustered staff tying Mr. Medicine Seller to the railing with some twine.

When I was seated, some of the giftees stopped by to gift me with an acrylic standee and a cookie! The standee is given exclusively to audience members who preordered their tickets super early, so it's amazing I got my hands on one! After the performance, someone also posted my art on their instagram story! O:

The performance visual, gift shop, and posters were also deployed around this time.

Also was pleasantly surprised to see a huge Mononoke Karakusa poster displayed. Unlike typical movie posters, this one was printed on a rather thick matte rather than thin translucent gloss paper.

📖 Zashikiwarashi Pamphlet - Hoping if productions of other episodes are a thing this can become a collection. The Bakeneko pamphlet was also sold here. If there's interest I can do a flip-through video of both the Bakeneko and Zashikiwarashi pamphlets!

🎟️Mononoke Karakasa Bonus Gifts: I thought it was just the clear file and a neat lil trading card but it seems like the trading card is actually a movie ticket??? I’m not gonna be in Japan when the movie comes out though but it’s a nice souvenir nonetheless!

🌇 Mononoke Karakasa flyer - The theatre had massive stacks of them to be taken freely. The first one got a bit wrinkled on my ride back to the hotel, so I grabbed 2 more after watching the 2nd performance!

💿Bakeneko Blu-Ray - This was something I thought I’d never get my hands as a US resident so I was pleasantly surprised they were selling this. Definitely a pretty penny but now I get to watch it at my leisure when I get home! May do a write up about it eventually. The Zashikiwarashi Blu-Ray actually went on sale today, but it only delivers in Japan. Sighhh. I guess I have no choice but to fly back when the Umi Bozu stageplay goes live. Or if it pops up on Mercari some time in August the price gouging hopefully won't be too horrific.

(it's been a busy time, so let's do a summary)

Because of Chinese New Year holidays, the musical is currently on a break 🐲🌟 There were just a few last performances and now they're resting 🙏 However, some extra content came out, so let's go through it (all video links in replies as always :*)!

LC Musical got media coverage on CCTV (Chinese Central Television - main national tv station in China). It was a short material promoting the play and the theatre, you can actually watch it on Encore Musicals' weibo and bilibili. The stageplay has gained popularity since the premiere and more people are visiting Shanghai to see it. So this news piece is basically a big shout out and a recommendation 🌟

Another video on Encore Musicals bilibili (and 1st pic at the top of my post) is from when the whole musical crew was drawing red envelopes 🧧 (I didn't know this tradition, so I added the wiki for you too^). Basically Zhang Jiahao and Wang Minhui drew the best gifts and were happy about it ^^

I already posted abt Wang Minhui's vlog with rehearsal scenes, but thanks to @chocolatexiaoshi 💝 explanations and translations from @/Elaraqwq and @/bhd322418 on twt 💙, I can tell you about some fun details about it ^^

⬆ So yea, here Cai Qi really says: "Coincidentally, I'm single too. If you want, I'll be your first boyfriend."

⬆ here Cai Qi starts singing CXS's main plot song "Words can't convey the love", then it cuts to Wang Minhui singing the rest (best thing is, we'll get to see that song performed by Shu Rongbo and Wu Yihan on Feb 10th livestream).

⬆ then he talks about the books they have in sunroom shelves. He points out how the books are all about how to become wealthy and sucessful, with titles like: 'It's performance that counts', 'Project Management Practices', 'Conscientiousness trumps competence', 'Corporate Strategy and Risk Management'. Like, the book he's holding in 2nd pic is written by Jack Ma Jun, 4th wealthiest person in China, you get the vibe... It's such a funny touch and shows attention to details by the crew designing the set ❤ I love the idea of our broke indebted boys having a library of economy coaching books ><'

⬆ (okay... okay, you got this Niebo) Then this part. Wang Minhui is singing a song from another musical (白夜追凶 roughly translated as 'Chasing the murderers day and night') in which they played as twins. Minhui played the older brother who was an experienced policeman.

In order to solve the case, Minhui's character tried to rewrite the psychology of the perpetrator, that's what this song is about. Like he was just imagining the interrogation. So Cai Qi is reenacting what Minhui is singing. It is not the actual choreography to that song 💀

From minor news, Encore Musicals announced they'll be auditioning for LC Musical cast. It's probably connected to how it's a long-term stage and they'll need more actors. According to choco-xiaoshi, musicals like this can go on for a year or longer, depending on how well the tickets sell. And for now LC stage is selling well 🌟

They also posted the performace schedule for March, with special events marked. And yes, Shu Rongbo and Wu Yihan have birthdays on the same day, March 10th and will be performing then 😌

I watched reservoir dogs. The first tarantino i had ever seen

It felt more like a stageplay script than a movie script. The single, mostly visually unremarkable setting for most of the action; the protag-less ensemble cast; the way it mostly relies very much on actor performance plus character devt and very little on scenery or camerawork. I gather it has in fact been adapted as a play several times? If you had shown me it without added context i would have assumed it was the other way around

seymour was in the right, actually

i've been in the little shop of horror tag recently, and there's a lot of people saying there that seymour deserves the tragic stageplay ending because he murdered people, and the only reason he got a happy ending in the movie was because the movie downplayed his guilt. and the movie did downplay his guilt, but.

imo, seymour was 100% justified. is the plant a metaphor for capitalism- selling others out for your own gain? maybe. but seymour only fed it two people- orin, the sadist who was physically and sexually abusing his girlfriend with no remorse; and mr mushnik, who adopted seyemour emotionally abuse, neglect, and exploit him all throughout his childhood and adulthood.

i love the original movie ending, it's over the top and wonderful. but i also like the happy ending, i like seeing seymour and audrey happy. i like that seymour gets to kill their abusers and then live happily ever after.

Five Nights at Roger Rabbit's Toontown AU

(Please note; I know NOTHING about Fnaf, nor do I plan to go into the series. All I know is that it's got neat character design, something spooky happening, and they're all animatronics. So I apologize if I get lore wrong)

Summary

Set in the 80's, a huge, cartoon themed restaurant was opened, under the name Roger Rabbit's Toontown. By the towns mysterious judge, Mr. Doom no less. Nobody could fathom why a normal man of law would establish such a business, let alone a man like Doom who's attire alone looked like he was ready for a funeral any minute. Especially a funeral he was the cause of.

Nevertheless, Mr. Doom's new gig quickly became quite popular among children and families. From the colorful visuals, the cute and witty cast of oddly advanced animatronic characters. It even brought in more tourists for the town! Which of course, made Doom an even bigger presence in the community than before.

However, no one ever stopped to wonder; how are these robots so advanced for the time? Why did the cruel judge even think about going into the family friendly business? And how do the toony characters seem so... Life like?

No one cared to question it. Neither did Eddie Valient, the new and desperate security guard hired for the night watch. But he's going to see exactly what these animatronics get up to when the curtain draws close...

The Restaurant

Judge Doom is an old soul. Which is a nice way of saying that he's a stuffy, old-fashioned man. And the decor of the place shows his taste. Despite the more toony and child friendly theme, it is definitely a homage to the early 1900s. It even makes history fun! Children can find plenty of interactive attractions around the place that will tell them interesting facts, such as how the first animated cartoon was made in 1908.

The size of the place is also clearly meant to make sure that the 'town' part of the establishments title was not to be taken lightly. Large enough to be considered a mansion, with one huge stage in the center and circled by the countless tables (think Dolly Parton's restaurant Stampede, as seen below), not to mention all of the secret passage ways and vents that allow the cast and staff to either navigate the restaurant without disturbing the show, or quickly make their way to the audience to interact with them and make them a part of the stageplay! Which, each play is on par with your favorite Saturday morning cartoons; wacky, zany, and just a hint of adult humor for the parents.

Eddie and whoever else might be on night watch with him will have quite the hassle keeping track of all the animatronics, when they know the place inside and out...

The Cast

The Humans

Judge Doom: The owner of this fine establishment. A mysterious man with a dark aura. Rumors say that going into the family entertainment business is him trying to turn over a new leaf... Though others believe that the family fun is an attempt to hide something far more sinister...

Eddie Valient: a down on his luck man who just needs something after the untimely and mysterious death of his brother. He can't keep asking his girlfriend for help, he knows she has her own bills to pay- not to mention he already owes her so much. He needs this job, even if those animatronics are freaky...

The Good Guys

Roger Rabbit: The main protagonist and mascot of the restaurant. This cute little rabbit just adores his beautiful wife, loves all of his friends, and offers a helping hand to those in need! Even if those mischievous weasels are out and about... Though sometimes, even heros need someone to save them...

Jessica Rabbit: The wife and secondary protagonist of the restaurant. Although her design is meant to appeal to the more mature members of the audience, she is always right beside her honey bunny and ready to step in when the weasels go too far...

Baby Herman: Oddly, the only humanoid animatronic in the whole establishment- next to Jessica that is. His role on stage is a sort of 'oblivious side plot'; Roger is almost always, for some reason, taking care of the baby and has to keep him out of trouble. Though when everyone goes home, this baby proves just how much of a loud mouthed brat he can be... It's odd how a child character would have such a crass soul deep down, no?

Benny the Cab: Taking the role of Roger's side kick and vehicle, this cab is part of the reason why the restaurant is so huge; to make room for such a huge animatronic, especially one made for chase scenes! Despite being a car, he almost seems a bit human... Though the same could be said for all the other animatronics too.

The Bad Guys

Smartassguy Weasel: The big bad of the whole cast. As the leader of the giggling pack of weasels, he's the one behind most of the nefarious plots against Roger Rabbit's Toontown. Mean, egotistical, and a cutthroat attitude to boot. You don't want to get on his bad side, as Eddie will find out soon enough...

Greasy Weasel: Smarty's perverted right-hand man. With an oily personality, a swift hand, and eyes on Mrs. Rabbit herself, it's a wonder Doom allowed this character to be made for a children's establishment... They should see what he's like when the lights go out.

Wheezy Weasel: This weasel is believed to be the Judges way of teaching children to say no to cigarettes. Quiet, intimidating, and with his glowing red hued eyes, it's odd how Wheezy wasn't chosen as the main villain for the cast...

Psycho Weasel: This animatronic has seemed to take it upon himself to bring a whole new meaning to 'interactive storytelling' in the grimmest sense. Psycho will often pop up out of nowhere and scare unsuspecting patrons, and the few times he speaks is always something... Sinister... Why Doom would think a character this morbid would be fit for family-friendly entertainment is anybodies guess.

Stupid Weasel: The only villain animatronic who seems to fit in the toony theme of the establishment the best. A big dumb brute, who just follows orders. His childish antics shine a more light-hearted light on the rest of his gang, but also make him stick out like a sore thumb... It's almost like he's not where he's supposed to be...

Will the nightguard be able to survive all five nights in Toontown? What do you think?

Asteroid City is another addition to my “pandemic film that didn’t suck” list. Mostly because though it was a pandemic film, it had more to say than simple commentary on the pandemic.

For Wes Anderson this was both a continuous evolution of his style and a solid return to form. This is important for a filmmaker whose success depends on upholding his brand (to the point where the film seems to be a financial success but most of the marketing I’ve seen around it has been tiktok “in the style of Wes anderson” social media clips) yet must stay fresh or else risk becoming boring (like one half of all new Spielberg projects) or even worse, artistically irrelevant (the other half).

I won’t go into a deep analysis of Anderson’s creative periods here but Asteroid City marks a much more nuanced start of a new one. Where Grand Budapest stands as his entry into a hyperaesthetic, Asteroid City is the evolution of style within that aesthetic. Rather than acting (as the Darjeeling Express did) as a deployment of a formula, Asteroid City takes the same ingredients that French Dispatch (which served to cement the aesthetic after aisle of dogs and grand budapest) had and puts out something thematically interesting, new, and (at least for our darling Wes) experimental.

Post pandemic (though we may appreciate nostalgia still) we’re moving away from looking at the past and planting our feet squarely in the direction of the future and this movie is doing it too. Frankly, that’s the whole message of Asteroid City.

The film takes all our familiar Anderson ingredients (whip-smart kids, tragic adults, deadpan angst, kitschy set design) and literally puts them in quarantine. Under this quarantine they somehow come out different than they would in previous films. They’re creatively changed. The girl scouts aren’t like the ones in moonrise kingdom. The NYC society artistes aren’t like the ones in the Royal Tenenbaums. The claymation animals aren’t like fantastic mr fox. The movie is practically screaming at us that through the pandemic quarantine we had the chance for a cultural reset and we need to grab onto it and hold on for all we’re worth.

As a metatextual film, it couldn’t be clearer. The events of asteroid city are those of a stageplay set within the events leading up to and around the stageplay set within a television showcase exploring the creative process of theater. This is inception but for exploring one’s own creative approach. And with all his might Wes Anderson is telling us that the pandemic was a needed break and now we can wake up to the future.

It’s a good movie. Great movie, even. Anderson breaks from the boring. He maintains his brand but stretches it, playing with the fourth wall and plot structure like he did with colorgrade and academy ratio in the French Dispatch. In some ways it felt like a return to the snappiness of Moonrise Kingdom and his earlier work even as he flexed his conceptual muscles.

It’s a masterpiece, and one of Anderson’s best yet. Go watch Asteroid City, if only for Steve Carrell operating a martini vending machine, but certainly to witness the continuing creative evolution of a director I count among the greats.
