Here’s my #ponyfairwest masterpost, such as it is! I was so busy with all of the activities and fun stuff that I barely remembered to take any photos!! The last two photos I literally took right before we left, hence why it’s so empty - everyone was getting ready to leave! 🤣 I had a TON of fun yesterday, and I already wish we could go back! Next in the What If Rainbow is one of my favorite concepts - the green Fjord horse! When I was brainstorming what colors to make for each breed, I was torn between purple and green for the Fjord, but as soon as I thought of the fairy ring, I knew she had to be green! A fairy ring is a ring of mushrooms that will purportedly send anyone who steps within to the fairy realm, and if you look closely, her symbols have one key difference! 🍄 I also wanted to use a Collectors Pose for this set, and a small, solid Fjord seemed like the perfect use of the small, sturdy Collectors Pose! Her hair was an interesting experiment, but ultimately I’m super happy with how she turned out! The next member of the What If Rainbow is Minnta! The name Minnta came from a book of Irish birds in history and myth, which says it’s an ancient Gaelic word for small birds! And with her primitive dun markings, I do think Minnta looks a lot like a little songbird! Minnta’s base color is closer to the traditional dun coloring, since they tend to be kind of light colored horses with darker points, but I went with orange dye instead to keep with the fantasy theme, and blue for contrasting stripes! Here they are at last, my What If Rainbow and first place winners from the Pony Fair West convention custom contest! I’ve admired the customs at the My Little Pony Fair for years now, and I have hoped for many years to take home a ribbon. 🏅 And with this being the final Fair event, I knew this was my last chance! I put my all into it, and tried to make a really spectacular set of ponies. I’ve always loved the idea of fantasy colored “real” ponies, and I’ve been toying with that theme for several years now. (I originally wanted a pink pinto or Appaloosa, and then I drew a concept for the pink Appaloosa with stars a few years back!) But then it occurred to me… why not make a set of what might have happened if Hasbro actually approved Bonnie Zacherle’s original idea for natural-colored pony toys? And added some color of course, for marketability! 🌈 I tried to stick with the early poses for the bases, since I was imagining that this would have been an alternate to the original Collector’s Pose set, but I couldn’t resist throwing in a Big Brother pose! I am really, really pleased with how they turned out, and I was so honored when they won first prize for their division at the Pony Fair West!! Thank you to everyone who voted for them! I’ve been working on this group of customs for a little while now, and it has been so hard to keep from posting them!! 😬 To kick off the What If Rainbow, let’s start with Nebula and Starling the blanket Appaloosas! 🌈 This herd was based off of real horse colors and breeds, so I wrote up a little fact card for the pair, with some cool info about Appaloosa horses! They started out as a very sad Majesty and a very yellowed and rusted Baby Moondancer, and while Nebula got a full repaint, Starling only had some highlights added to her eyes. I was excited to explore what “real” horses might look like in the MLP universe, which was what Bonnie Zacherle originally envisioned for the line, so I figure that Appaloosa horses might not have just plain spots, but a galaxy of stars! Today is the final pony of the What If pony rainbow, Gilt the Irish Cob! I’ve always wanted to make a brightly colored pinto, and I ended up making a purple piebald instead! 🤣 This handsome lad is based on a horse I’ve often seen called a Welsh Cob or Vanner, but all of the references online called them Irish Cobs! I added some glitter to the edges of his white markings to brighten them up, and he has heterochromic eyes - lavender and blue! I love his blaze which trails down into his little lip markings, and his gold hooves! I found a couple more photos from #ponyfairwest on my phone! This was from the trade hour, where you could bring our ponies to trade or sell! I didn’t bring much, but I ogled over these beautiful tables of ponies that other gals brought! I think the second photo was @keyfeather3 ‘s ponies? Someone’s hand darted in mid photo, but I thought that added some ambience lol! I was thinking about it, and it’s kind of wild that Candy Calliope won second place at #ponyfairwest when she and the llama pony exclusive were made with almost the same base! (Candy Calliope was made from a True Blue base, and @hqg1c has stated that True Blue and llama pony were made in the same factory run, which is why there were so few of them!) Lazaward is an Arabic word that eventually became “azure”, and seemed a fitting name for the next member of the What If Rainbow, the blue roan mustang! I had several blue roans in my childhood Breyer horse herd, and I’ve always been fascinated by the concept of a real horse that is colored like a My Little Pony! This bait started as a Moonstone who came from my dear friend Marbletoast, and she got a fresh dip in Kentucky Blue dye before I added some purple points! I originally made her corn spots black, but I thought it wasn’t keeping with the spirit of the MLP colors, so I layered a very dark purple over it, to match her eyes. It’s hard to see unless you see her in bright light!
