2015 Rebound Continues for Lumber Markets

Residential construction slowed late in 2014, but residential repair and remodeling (R&R)—the largest lumber market by volume—picked up the pace. Indications are that R&R construction will increase to 17.93 billion board feet (bd. ft.) of U.S. production in 2015, up from 17.41 billion last year.

For new residential construction, lumber demand is projected to increase close to an additional three billion bd. ft.—a jump from 10.98 billion bd. ft. in 2014 to 13.61 billion in 2015. According to Western Wood Products Association (WWPA), a trade association representing softwood lumber manufacturers in 12 Western states, stable interest rates, an improving jobs picture, and continued slow economic growth all will contribute to modest but sustainable gains in lumber demand for new home construction in 2015.

Responding to the increased demand, 2014 U.S. lumber production increased an estimated four percent to 41.34 billion bd. ft., from the previous year. For 2015, the WWPA predicts lumber demand will rise eight percent to 44.87 billion bd. ft.

Wood pellets—renewable, sustainable, and carbon neutral—will continue to grow as a clean energy need. And weakening world economies, according to Forest2Market.com, will mean increased imports of wood and paper products to the U.S.

We want this building to be very comfortable and adjustable in each area while maintaining energy efficiency.
