Growing up in coastal Fife, I really can’t ever remember seeing Cardamine pratensis (Lady’s Smock among other common names). This spring, here in Perth, I am seeing them everywhere. Wonderful #plant and one of my absolute favourite #spring #flowers. Bitterroot , Lewisia rediviva , appear to simply arise directly from the ground with no stem. Found several blooming in the sagebrush pine woodland of Frazier Mountain .Meriwether Lewis ate bitterroot in 1805 during the Lewis & Clark Expedition. The roots were a food plant of most Western Native Americans . Clematis virginiana in full bloom! I planted this two years ago. These native clematis grow in such abundance here. I love these plants@ However, if they don't get adequate sunlight they won't flower. I dug this plant up from the field and planted it along the railing of the steps to a friends cabin. It will not be staying here. Steeplebush (Spiraea tomentosa) in Algonquin Provincial Park. Many Bees and Flower Flies visit the flowers of this beautiful plant which often grows in wet conditions such as this one photographed at the edge of Peck Lake. Kept meaning to add these to my One A Day Plant collection, but so many interesting plants around. These Viola riviniana (Common Dog Violet) has been flowering away happily for 2 months easily enough. Self seeded into a crack in permeable paving, it survives and indeed excels I’m only jointing sand with little water. Tough as nails and infinitely beautiful. I may be guilty of spreading the seed in all gardens I have lived in. I make no apologies though. Giant or Great Solomon's Seal. Polygonatum commutatum is basically the common Solomon's seal on a serious dose of growth hormones. While the more common Solomon's Seal grows between 1-2 ft tall, Giant Solomon's Seal grows to 7 feet tall. Mine are 4.5 ft tall. I planted these plants on both sides at the beginning of my walkway to the house to act as sentinels.The rhyzomes were planted in the fall of 2019 from my buddies house. They were building a deck and basically dug up these rhyzomes as they were digging post holes. Supposedly these plants grow only in part shade to all shade. However, here at 3400 ft they are growing and thriving in full sun. I have yet to find any groeing in the shade.
