#BlackoutBestsellerList
Tumblr media
As I said before, it is important to support black creators and let their voices be heard. Supporting black artists is something we should always do, and I love this idea of celebrating Juneteenth by blacking out the best seller lists. I have provided some links below to the Amistad Books tweet and other articles that provide resources to find books by black authors, so if you want more information be sure to check below. I’m going to highlight the books I decided to purchase, but I highly encourage you to check out more resources and choose some books that appeal to you!
Tumblr media
The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett - This is the New York Times best selling authors second Novel. Brit Bennett’s first book is also a finalist for the NBCC John Leonard Prize for the best first book. The basis of her newest novel tells the story of two twin sisters who grew up in a small, southern, black community who ran away from home at age sixteen and lived very different lives after the fact. One sister lives with her black daughter in the town she tried to leave, while the other lives among her white family, that knows nothing of her past. The story is not just one that speaks on issues of race, but focuses on how a person’s past can shape their future and the choices they make, and why a person may be interested in living in a way that is not of their origins.
Tumblr media
Deacon King Kong by James McBride - Award winning and Best-selling author James McBride brings forth a thrilling story about what happens to a group of eye witnesses of a shooting. The reason for this shooting and its effects make up the basis of the novel as we follow the lives of those who witnessed it and how it changed them. Through this journey we find out that these characters’ lives overlap more than we may have expected and the author teaches us that not all secrets are meant to be hidden. He also teaches us that in order to grow we must face the reality of change without fearing it.
Tumblr media
To Live Woke by Rupert W. Nacoste, Ph. D. - Dr. Rupert Nacoste, the Social Psychologist who created the term ‘Neo-diversity’ and teaches the one-of-a-kind ‘Psychology of Interdependence and Race’ course at NC State University, brings us his fourth novel. In this novel, much like his teachings, he shares stories of his past experiences, having grown up in the Jim Crow legally segregated south and serving in Navy during a time that involved Race Riots, to give the reader some real life understanding and make the call to action for all people to truly embrace neo-diversity. Dr. Nacoste says ‘We can save the soul of America.’ and he uses this book as a way to really show us how we can contribute to this effort and actually understand what it means to ‘live woke’.
I haven’t read these books just yet, but I will be reviewing them on my podcast in a couple weeks after they arrive (so pick up your copies if you want to read along with me!).

The wait for the 25,000-odd homebuyers of the beleaguered Jaypee Group projects is set to become longer.
According to a BSE filing by Jaypee Infratech, the offer of the Suraksha Realty-led consortium, the only player left in the race to acquire Jaypee Infratech, has been rejected by the Committee of Creditors (CoC) after it was not able to get the 66 per cent votes required to get the go-ahead.
According to the filing, only 23.47 per cent of the votes were in favour of Suraksha while 41.85 per cent were against giving Jaypee Infratech projects to them. The rest abstained from voting. Almost none of the banks voted in favour of Suraksha’s plans, a closer look at the Jaypee filing shows.
“Since the members representing 23.47 per cent of the voting rights assented to the matter, the decision on the item stands rejected,” the papers on Voting Results for the Ninth Meeting of the Committee of Creditors (CoC) of Jaypee Infratech Ltd submitted in the BSE stated.
Voting on the issue started on April 30 for banks and financial institutions as well as homebuyers and fixed-deposit holders. The process ended on May 3.
According to sources close to the matter, in the worst-case scenario if the insolvency resolution professional (IRP) does not come up with any plan, Jaypee Infratech might head for liquidation. If that happens homebuyers are in the danger of not getting their apartments.
Jaypee Infra lenders reject Suraksha bid; NBCC top choice for homebuyers However, sources close to the CoC are certain that Jaypee Infratech projects will now head for a third round of bidding. This would allow not only state-run NBCC to participate in bidding but also give a chance to the promoters of Jaypee Group as well as Adani Group to throw their hat in the ring to grab the project, worth over Rs 8,000 crore.
The rejection of Suraksha’s bid has effectively removed all chances of starting work in 2019, according to the people close to the process.
“Last time it took almost nine months to come to the process of voting on a firm. Now again fresh bids will be called and this would stretch the process as new bidders are planning to join the race. This means until at least the end of this year, work on Jaypee sites might not start,” said Pankaj Gupta, who in 2010 gave the down payment in Jaypee Wish Town’s Kensington Park Apartment project.
NBCC the top choice of home-buyers
The homebuyers fear things are again going off the hinge in the way they did almost eight years ago.
NBCC, which has had extensive discussions with homebuyers, was their obvious choice.
However, it was not allowed to take part in the present round of bidding because it did not have the permission to do so.
Fears that NBCC might not bag the project are so high that homebuyers have written more than a thousand letters to the prime minister, finance minister and urban development minister.
“Knowing very well that there is overwhelming support from both banks and homebuyers to NBCC’s proposal, the IRP, Anuj Jain, did not put the NBCC proposal to vote on the grounds that it did not have the finance ministry’s permission. “But it is evident from the finance ministry note that NBCC had those permissions,” said Manish Goyal, a homebuyer, in his letter to the prime minister.
Others said the voting process was sabotaged. “Just before voting commenced, all the passwords of homebuyers were erased. The process was stopped and resumed after a nine-hour delay,” said Dharmendra Kumar, another homebuyer, in his letter to the PM.
Business Standard has reviewed the letters. However, the veracity of these allegations could not be independently ascertained.
Jaypee promoters trying to win back confidence
In emails as well as meetings with homebuyers, the Jaypee promoters are trying to win back customer confidence.
“The ongoing process for over 18 months has allowed work at snail’s pace but it is essential that the matter gets resolved, incomplete homes are completed and delivered in a time-bound manner, which alone can mitigate anguish and pain caused to you. I am aware of your unhappiness yet feel responsible to share the road map which we believe would surely address your concern and can be the path which shall pave the way for resolution of this subject despite certain reservations,” Manoj Gaur as executive chairman and chief executive officer of the beleaguered company said in an email to homebuyers.

A JPMorgan Chase & Co. unit violated India’s foreign investment rules and helped property developer Amrapali Group divert funds from realty projects, the nation’s Supreme Court said in a ruling and ordered an investigation. The court on Tuesday ordered the federal anti-money laundering agency to investigate Amrapali, based in Noida, near New Delhi, for diverting funds overseas with the help of JPMorgan and others. The violations, based on a forensic audit, range from disregarding foreign investment norms, paying dividend without generating profits, setting up fake companies and overvaluing shares.JPMorgan’s Singapore-based spokesman Chris Cockerill declined to comment. The biggest U.S. bank is allowed to seek a review of the ruling. Any criminal charges will only be filed in a lower court once investigation is complete.Developers, including Amrapali, Jaypee Infratech Ltd. and Unitech Ltd., have been taken to courts by irate homeowners and creditors as apartment sales slumped in the once red-hot South Asian market following the triple whammy of a surprise cash ban, tax reforms and a consumer-protection law for the sector. Home prices in India’s financial capital dropped and unsold inventory rose 14% in first half of 2019.Troubled SectorsJPMorgan invested around 850 million rupees ($12.3 million) in an Amrapali Group company’s shares and later sold them to an office boy and nephew of the auditor for 1.4 billion rupees, according to the ruling published on the top court’s website.“The shares were overvalued for making payment to JPMorgan,” the court’s two-judge bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra said in its ruling, agreeing with the forensic auditor regarding JPMorgan’s role. “It was adopted as a device for siphoning off the money of the home buyers to foreign countries.”The ruling can impact lenders’ efforts to recover dues as the court held that home buyers have the first right over the projects rather than banks that have lent funds to the builder. The court scrapped Amrapali’s registration under real estate laws and directed government-owned NBCC India Ltd. to complete all incomplete projects. The investigations will be done under the court’s supervision by police and the federal anti-money laundering agency.“We are not a country in which courts will permit such action and permit a person to go scot-free,” according to the ruling. The case is Writ Petition (Civil) No. 940/2017, Bikram Chatterji and others v. Circle of Sisters Book Club of Columbus
Circle of Sisters of Columbus Interview with Helen Gibson and Georgette Martin
Helen Gibson, Circle of Sisters Book Club is a straight country girl from Alabama who currently resides in Columbus Georgia. She is a lifelong reader who honestly cannot remember a time that she did not have a book in her hand. She’s told that even as a toddler she was reading magazines upside down!
BPM: Please tell us about your book club, store or blog!  Our Book Club started after many years of me and a fellow reader saying “We should start a Book Club in our church when we finish….”. There was always another program, another event, another ‘something’ that made us hold back starting the club. In 2009 when we both got our first Nooks we again talked about starting a book club, but held off. It wasn’t until 2016 that we finally realized there will always be SOMETHING going on so let’s just do it. We decided to have an interest meeting to see how many were interested but rather than invite only members of our church, we also invited other friends and coworkers. We were truly astonished about how many readers were members of our own congregation and had no idea we all shared a love of books. That was amazing for us! We now have 23 members to include 6 out-of-state members who join us via Skype or Whatapp.
BPM: Tell us about your members. How would you describe the personality of your group as a whole? Since we are located near a military base, our group is diverse: single, married, young, older. We are a lively bunch!
BPM: How do you make your book selections for the month? When do you select the books? The first few months of the club, it was difficult selecting books. No one wanted to actually nominate a book; we got a lot of “whatever the group decides…”. After talking it over, my co-president and I decided to just make the selections ourselves since everyone wasn’t participatory in nominating and voting. For 2017 we made book marks for the year’s selections with no problems. Every other month we read an AA book; we decided early on that we would not limit ourselves to a particular genre of books. This has worked well for us during our first year. We read one book a month for discussion, but if we read a particularly good book in between we make sure we tell the others to get it.
BPM: What are you reading now? How did you find out about this book? What books are on your reading schedule? Right now we are reading Destiny Lingers by Rolonda Watts. Georgette and I met Rolonda at the NBCC last year and purchased her book; from the buzz we have received so far everyone is enjoying it. A few other books that we will be reading this year are Glass Houses by Brian W. Smith, Private Sins by Brenda Barrett, and Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult. We just finished The Perfect Affair by Lutishia Lovely and whew! what a ride that was!!
BPM: Do you primarily purchase books online or in a bookstore? Do you prefer to read digital books? Early on we made it clear that it did not matter how you read the book. We just encouraged reading; that was our main goal. We do, however, stress the importance of supporting AA authors, buying their books instead of sharing their books, and leaving reviews for the books we enjoy. So far, the price of e-books has not been questioned and has not hindered our reading selections. Although most everyone in the group has an electronic reading device, I don’t think we will ever stop buying DTB. I visit our local B&N store at least once a week.
BPM: Do you host special events during the year or do you work for any charities? Do you get together as a group to socialize outside of your book club meetings? Since our club is still relatively new, we have not had the opportunity to host any special events or participate in any type of charity work. Hopefully, as we enter into our second year we will be able to help spread the joy of reading! We are also thinking of ways to annually celebrate our club of sisterhood reading so maybe an annual get-a-way is on the horizon for us. We’ll see.
BPM: Do you have any words of wisdom for other readers who are in or who might want to start a book club? If you want to start a book club…JUST DO IT….don’t wait for ‘whatever’ to happen or not happen. Just send out the invites and start your club. If only two people show up, meet and keep it moving. If you’re already in a book club, enjoy the experience and don’t stress about the rest.

"This book is beautiful.” *****—* A.O. Scott, New York Times Book Review, cover review
Following on the heels of his New York Times bestselling novel Telegraph Avenue, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon delivers another literary masterpiece: a novel of truth and lies, family legends, and existential adventure—and the forces that work to destroy us.
In 1989, fresh from the publication of his first novel, The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, Michael Chabon traveled to his mother’s home in Oakland, California, to visit his terminally ill grandfather. Tongue loosened by powerful painkillers, memory stirred by the imminence of death, Chabon’s grandfather shared recollections and told stories the younger man had never heard before, uncovering bits and pieces of a history long buried and forgotten. That dreamlike week of revelations forms the basis for the novel Moonglow, the latest feat of legerdemain from Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon.
*Moonglow *unfolds as the deathbed confession of a man the narrator refers to only as “my grandfather.” It is a tale of madness, of war and adventure, of sex and marriage and desire, of existential doubt and model rocketry, of the shining aspirations and demonic underpinnings of American technological accomplishment at midcentury, and, above all, of the destructive impact—and the creative power—of keeping secrets and telling lies. It is a portrait of the difficult but passionate love between the narrator’s grandfather and his grandmother, an enigmatic woman broken by her experience growing up in war-torn France. It is also a tour de force of speculative autobiography in which Chabon devises and reveals a secret history of his own imagination.
From the Jewish slums of prewar South Philadelphia to the invasion of Germany, from a Florida retirement village to the penal utopia of New York’s Wallkill prison, from the heyday of the space program to the twilight of the “American Century,” the novel revisits an entire era through a single life and collapses a lifetime into a single week. A lie that tells the truth, a work of fictional nonfiction, an autobiography wrapped in a novel disguised as a memoir, *Moonglow *is Chabon at his most moving and inventive.
