#Repost from @solgasart . I finished it! I have seen many beautiful edits of this scene and had doubts already.. Should I still paint this... (Many doubts last time, ye? 😅) But the beauty of these two decided for me. And I returned to this scene, started from null and painted my version. Last time I am a big fan of rough textures, love the unique play of brushes on paintings. So, I did this drawing with the new feeling and updated technique. Yes, this is how I feel it now. Do you see me new? 🧐 Do you like it? 😉 ______________________ Новая работа. Хотя я видела уже много разных артов с этим кадром и начала сомневаться, стоит ли его рисовать. #Outlander - S5 Ep 12 - Season Finale - "Never My Love"

Well that was an episode!  Caitriona Balfe deserves a big, fat Emmy award for her performance in “Never my Love,” the Season 5 finale.  Let’s recap:

At the end of episode 11, Lionel Brown and his men stormed into Claire’s surgery, knocked out a pregnant Marsali and kidnapped Claire.   “Never my Love” begins with Claire in the midst of a fantasy while the song, Never my Love, by The Association plays.   In Claire’s fantasy, its 1960 and she and Jamie are hosting a dinner party.  Everyone is there – Ian, Murtaugh, Jocasta, Marsali, Fergus, and Jamie.  Roger, Brianna and Jem are notably absent. 

All are dressed for the 60’s except Jamie, who wears the clothes from his time and Ian, who is dressed in his military uniform. 

Back to Claire’s reality, she is tied up, gagged and bloody from multiple beatings.  She’s been brutalized by Lionel Brown and his men.  Brown tells Claire that he knows she’s Dr. Rawlings and that he is taking her back to Brownsville where she is to confess to the women in town.  She tries to escape because she’s so bad ass, but she doesn’t get very far. 

One of the men slashes her with his knife.  Tebby, one of Brown’s men, warns them about drawing Claire’s blood for fear that she is a “conjure woman.” Claire uses that fear, threatening the men that they will be dead by dawn if they don’t let her go.    Later, Tebby shares his meal with Claire, asking her to remember that he tried to help her, not hurt her. 

They stop at a creek on their way to Brownsville.  Claire talks Tebby into helping her escape into the stream.  In turn, she’ll save his life from her “curse.”  Tebby agrees but the plan falls apart when Lionel grabs her.  Claire kicks and screams so Lionel gags her.  That night by the fire, Lionel catches Claire staring hatefully at him.  He grabs her, punches her and ties her to the tree. 

Claire is having trouble breathing with the gag in her mouth.  A man named, Donner, approaches Claire and removes her gag.  Then has asks her if she knows Ringo Star!  Claire is shocked to hear that he is a time traveler too!   Donner guessed that Claire was from the future when he saw Dr. Rawlings’ medical advice.  Donner explains that he traveled from 1968 with Otter Tooth – whose name is actually Robert Springer.  Claire tells Donner that Springer was murdered by the Mohawk.  She begs Donner to let her go and offers him gemstones and where he can find the stone circle so he can go home, if he frees her. 

Later, Lionel and his nephew pay Claire a visit.  The nephew drops his pants.  Though all we see is Claire’s face, we know that she is being raped.  After his nephew, Lionel rapes Claire.  The other men line up for their turn.  It’s horrific.  To cope, Claire retreats back into her Thanksgiving dinner fantasy in the future. 

But, even in her fantasy, she can’t escape entirely.  There is a knock at the door.  When Claire answers it, two policemen tell her that Brianna, Roger and Jemmy were killed in a car accident. 

Unaware of all that’s happened at Fraser’s Ridge, Roger, Bree and Jem have traveled through the stones.  Dazed and confused, they rise to find Ian, standing right where they left him.  It didn’t work!  It seems that both Roger and Bree were both thinking of home and that is exactly where the stone took them.    Ian is shocked to see them.  Roger and Bree head back to Fraser’s Ridge with Ian and Jem.  As they approach the Ridge, they are alarmed to see that Jamie has lit the Fiery Cross and race for home. Something is terribly wrong!

At Fraser’s Ridge, Jamie is gathering the men to begin the hunt for Claire.  Jamie is shocked to see Roger and Bree.  They tell him that the stones didn’t work.  Jamie tells them what’s happened.  Roger will go with Jamie as will Josiah Beardsley.  Bree wants to go as well, but Jamie won’t allow it. 

Back in her fantasy world, Claire is slow dancing with Jamie just as Jamie’s men discover Brown and his men.  Claire watches in a daze as Jamie, Ian and Roger slaughter the men. 

Jamie runs to Claire and is shocked to see her condition.  Ian and Fergus are horrified to see what Brown’s men have done to Claire.  They hand Claire a knife so she can have her revenge but Jamie intervenes telling them that Claire has taken an oath to do no harm so since she is bound by that oath, he does the killing for her.  Jamie asks Claire how many of the men hurt her.  Claire doesn’t know.  Jamie orders the men to kill all of them and Brown’s men are lined up and killed one by one.  The men scream and beg for mercy. 

Once the deed is done, gently wraps Claire in his tartan and carries her to see that all the men are dead. But, wait…!  Lionel Brown is still alive.  Roger suggests taking him back to the Ridge to question him. 

As they head for home, Claire’s thoughts go to Marsali and her unborn baby.  Jamie reassures Claire that they are both fine.  Claire asks about Donner, the other time traveler.  Claire also learns that Roger, Bree and Jemmy have returned.

Finally, they return to the Ridge, met at the wagon by Brianna and Marsali who help Claire down from the wagon.  Bree embraces Claire.  She knows firsthand what has happened to Claire.  Bree is helping Claire bathe. She rises to give Claire some privacy offering her hand and ear whenever her mother needs her.

Claire is safe at home and Jamie is in a rage.  Lionel Brown is in Claire’s surgery and Jamie wants to know what the men were planning.  Claire doesn’t want Jamie to worry about her.  She talks about the “sheer level of s—t” that she’s been through in her life – both in the past and future.  She says, “I am supposed to be shattered by this,” but “Well, I won’t be.”   After all she’s been through; she will not be broken by this. 

Back at home in their cabin, Bree tells Roger that Claire hasn’t told her all that was done to her.  In the dark, Roger confesses to Brianna that he killed a man that day.  Even though it was justified, it still haunts Roger.

The following day, Claire returns to her surgery.  Lionel is bound on the table.  Marsali is there.  He begs Claire for mercy.  Claire pushes through her panic and asks Marsali to prepare a poultice.  Claire moves to her table and holds a scalpel in her hand obviously thinking of using it on Lionel’s throat. 

But she can’t.  She drops the scalpel and runs from the room. 

Now Lionel and Marsali are alone in the surgery.  A smug Lionel threatens Marsali telling her that his brother will come and slaughter everyone and burn the houses down if anything happens to him. 

My mind immediately goes to the prediction that Claire and Jamie will die in a fire.   Marsali turns to Lionel.  She tells Lionel that she didn’t make the same oath as Claire.  She tells Lionel that she will watch him burn in hell before he can hurt anyone else she loves.  She stabs Lionel in the neck with a syringe full of hemlock.  Lionel dies.

Jamie enters the surgery and finds Marsali on the floor.  She’s afraid that she will be haunted by Lionel’s ghost or goes to hell for killing him.  Jamie reassures her that the man got what he deserved but he is actually a bit disappointed that he won’t be able to question the man as he intended.

Jamie takes Brown’s body back to his brother in Brownsville.  Jamie explains what Lionel and his men did to Claire but brought Lionel’s body back so his family can bury him.  Richard Brown says that Lionel deserved to die for his crimes and that Jamie did what he had to do.  That seems to be the end of it until Richard tells Jamie that now Richard will do what he has to do.  It’s an ominous warning and again I wonder if this is the sign of what’s to come.  Jamie returns home. 

Roger and Bree are heading to see Claire.  They talk about being on the “road less traveled” reminded of the Robert Frost poem.  Roger tells Bree that he is not disappointed that they didn’t go anywhere.  The stones were supposed to bring them home and that’s what they did.

Later, Claire and stand on her porch, safe but still bruised.  She tells Jamie that she just wants to enjoy the quietness of this ordinary day.  They know that this peace won’t last for long – war is coming.  She and Jamie take each other’s hand.  They will meet what comes next as best they can.  Jamie tells Claire that when they are parted by death, if his last words aren’t “I love you,” it’s only because there was no time to say it. 

At day’s end, Jamie and Claire lay naked in each other’s arms.  Claire has told him everything that happened to her.  Jamie calls her brave.  When he asks Claire how she’s feeling now, Claire responds “safe.”

With that, season 5 comes to an end.  Filming of season 6 was set to begin but has been postponed due to COVID-19.  This means that the coming “Droughtlander” will be a long one.  I plan to use the time to catch up on the books.
