NR!Borough Leaders!

Howdy big kids! Here’s the semi-official designs for the Newsies Rewritten Borough leaders! I wanted to draw them for a while now! These are also F2U designs as long credit is given to this account or to @flinttflakes as I will occasionally draw something there.

As each borough post mentioned, newsies color themselves by borough to show solidarity and pride of where they’re from! Manhattan is blue, Staten Island is green, Queens is yellow, Bronx is orange, and Brooklyn is red! Anyways, about the leaders:

Jack “Cowboy” Kelly: Jack’s design was based off Herrick’s Highschool’s Jack Kelly, played by Tristan Surajbali (he was so good. I love him to bits.) Gave him the icon blue shirt mixed with the OG Jack Kelly red handkerchief around the neck and the cowboy hat.

Cora “Aussie” Foster: Aussie is an oc by sundaymorningtv on tumblr. Not having a description from them, I just envisioned Aussie being a redhead with curly hair and it looks pretty good!

Georgina “Georgie”: Georgie truly belongs to olitheheadphoneskid23. As Georgina has a Greek origin, I went with a Greek appearance and also gave her the waistcloths to kind of show it.

Julian “Smalls” Hunt: Smalls is based on Julian DeGuzman from the live broadway recording, so he is Filipino. His outfit changed the most as I wanted it to be more aligned with the Bronx’ orange color and different from Georgie’s yellow.

Salvatore “Spot” Conlon: Spot’s designed is based on Tommy Bracco and Gabriel Damon for the most part, you can’t really tell there was a Bracco influence on Spot as he’s wearing the OG Spot’s clothes but once I get close up shots it should look more accurate!

NR Bronx

The Bronx is known for its poverty, it’s well known for all newsies that they don’t get many customers who can afford the daily paper. Bucky’s reign affected Staten Island and the Bronx the most, leaving a small amount of newsies left.

The Bronx’ newest leader, Smalls, recently gained leadership at 13. He took over from his older brother, who left to find a better job to support his family. Smalls was left in disarray, newsies scattered across the borough and practically nomadic without a strong leadership. Smalls managed to run away for a while, meeting Spot who allowed him to learn how to lead from him. Bronx and Brooklyn lean on each other to heal, though neither admits to associating with each other. This is why many boroughs still believe the Bronx is too weak to handle themselves and believe Manhattan and Queens should absorb the resources. Smalls also spends a lot of time with the Lower Manhattanites and learns leadership skills from Jack.

The Bronx mainly operates like Manhattan but all groups look to Smalls, no one has any seconds or leaders besides Smalls. There are scraps and such between groups but Smalls and his gang are the one who step in. Smalls surrounds himself with muscle, he’s a little kid! He can’t fight, he’ll need all the help he can get. Smalls and his gang are located in Hudson Yard, it’s the only area they really can get by consistently.

The Bronx wears a mix of colors, some wear Red-Orange to show solidarity with Brooklyn, others wear Blue-Green to show solidarity with Manhattan and to represent healing, and many wear white to represent their new beginning.

Newsies Rewritten Intro

Howdy! I’m Flintt (Any/All) and this is my Newsies Rewritten AU where I combine aspects of the 1992 movie, broadway newsies, west end newsies, tuts newsies, and the book!

This is a passion project because I love getting nitpicky and in-depth with my works. This AU allows me to expand and make Newsies even more fun for me!

Newsies Rewritten is open for collaboration, which means you can send in asks to add headcanons to individual newsies and/or events to the plot!

I plan on posting the structure of each borough and a list of each newsie from each borough with their personalities and notabilities.

At the end of the day, this is purely for fun and to make connections!

NR Brooklyn

For Brooklyn, Newsies Rewritten puts Spot Conlon as the second youngest and newest leader after his predecessor’s downfall. Instead of the medieval tyranny the last leader followed, Spot merged groups into “families” and follows a mafia-like system.

Spot recently gained his role as leader at the age of 12, which was in 1896. His up taking of leadership was when the newsies started seeing a change within how they operate, as Spot was the youngest leader of his time. Before Spot, a man named Bucky had ruled over the Brooklyn for close to a decade. Bucky had sucked most of Brooklyn dry, moving on to Staten Island and the Bronx due to their vulnerability.

Spot ends up getting rid of Bucky, taking over and completely rebuilding the borough from the ground up. He places main family’s in each sub-borough with little groups surrounding them.

The uniformed red sleeveless shirt is strictly for muscle. People like York, Scope, and Hotshot consistently wear it to show off their jobs as muscle and to signify to other newsies to stay away while they’re doing patrols. Spot doesn’t wear the uniform until the rally as he usually keeps a very put together appearance. Besides red, newsies from Brooklyn may represent themselves wearing pinks, reds, and violets!
