I volunteer, and I find it enjoyable, but I feel like the anarchist response to this election being "well we just have to volunteer harder and build community ourselves" is misplaced. At some point the federal government takes trillions of dollars and gives almost nothing of value. Telling people to do these assholes jobs for them, unpaid, is not the best advice.

So here is my advice. You have to pay attention. You have to read actual newsources, like AP and Reuters and NPR and your local paper. You have to be informed. Today NHPR posted an article contemplating whether Trump is going to revert to the Schedule F changes for civil servants. Do you know exactly what that means? Do you know which employees in which offices would be affected, and how? Do you know if you even support or oppose that actual policy change? What about context - what's the median salary for workers in that field, and how has it changed under Biden?

Nobody can know everything about everything, so pick a couple of issues you care about and get REALLY, really informed. Research deep dive. Triple check sources. It's not enough to disagree with Trump's general brand. If you're able to go into the next election with concrete policy changes Trump made that you disagree with, it's going to be less emotional to confront Trump supporters and gauge how misinformed they really are. I know it's boring and stressful, and the absolute worst part of it is that you're going to find there are an awful lot of policy points where this asshole doesn't diverge from what the Democrats did / wanted to do at all. The DOT was equally underfunded under Trump and Biden, for example. If you care about bridges and highways and trains and airplanes, maybe make that one of the issues you get informed about. Or make a friend you trust who is covering that, and get updates from them. Do not depend on mainstream news outlets.

Find out the names of all the mutual aid and advocacy groups in your region. Are there a whole lot? What have they accomplished? Don't jump right into volunteering until you know what their work fully entails. Who are they helping? Who do you want to help the most? And if the answer to that question is not "people who have the least" but rather "people who are like me," think hard on that.

Your time is precious. Use it to become an expert, and then share that expertise freely. We are fighting wars on the fronts of attention and information.

'He was being hunted': Dog found with arrow in neck, bullet in chest, expected to survive

ST. LOUIS (WKRC/CNN Newsource) - Rescuers found a dog with an arrow in his neck and a bullet in his abdomen that they believe were from hunters attempting to kill him.

According to a post from Stray Rescue of St. Louis on Facebook, the 1-year-old puppy was brought into the rescue shelter by an unknown person who the posters did not think was related to the dog's injuries.

The shelter said the dog, who they named Lucky Charm, had a arrow pierced through his neck and esophagus and nearly touching his spine, and a bullet lodged in his stomach.

"Someone was hunting this puppy," the post said. "They wanted him dead."

The post said the workers immediately administered pain medication to Lucky Charm and prepped him for the intensive surgery he would need to go through in order to remove the arrow and bullet.

Lucky Charm had to be transported to a "skilled specialist" to perform the delicate operation, but on March 18, one day after the pup was found, the shelter returned to Facebook to report the surgery was a success.

"Here's the really cool part - they said he is doing great and was a champ eating his breakfast!" the follow-up read. "Although he's not out of the woods yet and today is critical, they think we'll be able to bring him home in the next day or two."

The poster was correct, since they posted one final follow-up on March 19 showing that Lucky Charm was back at the shelter after a successful surgery.

Hospitals owned by private equity firms riskier for patients, study says

"(CNN) - Health care is more hazardous for patients at hospitals purchased by private equity firms, financing models designed to make money for investors.

That conclusion comes from a new study published Tuesday in the journal Jama.

The study looked at the rates of 10 serious adverse events associated with medical care at 51 hospitals, before and after they were purchased by private equity firms.

Researchers then compared those results with the rates of the same complications at more than 250 hospitals that were not owned by those entities.

The study revealed that, in those private equity firm-purchased hospitals, there was a 25% increase in patient complications.

The rates of patient falls inside the facility, central line infections and surgical site infections all increased.

The study author said treating fewer patients eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid benefits is one trend the research found.

Previous research has shown cuts to staffing and replacing more highly paid workers with those paid less Is often tied to private equity firm acquisitions.

Those firms have been acquiring large chunks of the U.S. health care delivery system in recent years, including hospitals, nursing homes, behavioral health systems and private physician practices.

Earlier this month, the Senate Budget Committee announced its bipartisan investigation of the impact of private equity purchases on health care facilities.

 Our Nation has made tremendous progress in advancing the cause of equality for LGBTQI+ Americans, including in the military.  Despite their courage and great sacrifice, thousands of LGBTQI+ service members were forced out of the military because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.  Many of these patriotic Americans were subject to a court-martial.  While my Administration has taken meaningful action to remedy these problems, the impact of that historical injustice remains.  As Commander in Chief, I am committed to maintaining the finest fighting force in the world.  That means making sure that every member of our military feels safe and respected.

     Accordingly, acting pursuant to the grant of authority in Article II, Section 2, of the Constitution of the United States, I, Joseph R. Biden Jr., do hereby grant a full, complete, and unconditional pardon to persons convicted of unaggravated offenses based on consensual, private conduct with persons age 18 and older under former Article 125 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), as previously codified at 10 U.S.C. 925, as well as attempts, conspiracies, and solicitations to commit such acts under Articles 80, 81, and 82, UCMJ, 10 U.S.C. 880, 881, 882.  This proclamation applies to convictions during the period from Article 125’s effective date of May 31, 1951, through the December 26, 2013, enactment of section 1707 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2014 (Public Law 113-66).

     The purpose of this proclamation is to pardon only offenses based on consensual, private conduct between individuals 18 and older that do not involve any aggravating factor, including:  

     (1)  conduct that would violate 10 U.S.C. 893a, prohibiting activities with military recruits or trainees by a person in a position of special trust;      (2)  conduct that was committed with an individual who was coerced or, because of status, might not have felt able to refuse consent;      (3)  conduct on the part of the applicant constituting fraternization under Article 134 of the UCMJ;      (4)  conduct committed with the spouse of another military member; or      (5)  any factors other than those listed above that were identified by the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces in United States v. Marcum as being outside the scope of Lawrence v. Texas as applied in the military context, 60 M.J. 198, 207–08 (2004).

     The Military Departments (Army, Navy, or Air Force), or in the case of the Coast Guard, the Department of Homeland Security, in conjunction with the Department of Justice, shall provide information about and publicize application procedures for certificates of pardon.  An applicant for a certificate of pardon under this proclamation is to submit an application to the Military Department (Army, Navy, or Air Force) that conducted the court-martial or, in the case of a Coast Guard court-martial, to the Department of Homeland Security.  If the relevant Department determines that the applicant satisfies the criteria under this proclamation, following a review of relevant military justice records, the Department shall submit that determination to the Attorney General, acting through the Pardon Attorney, who shall then issue a certificate of pardon along with information on the process to apply for an upgrade of military discharge.  My Administration strongly encourages veterans who receive a certificate of pardon to apply for an upgrade of military discharge.  

     Although the pardon under this proclamation applies only to the convictions described above, there are other LGBTQI+ individuals who served our Nation and were convicted of other crimes because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.  It is the policy of my Administration to expeditiously consider and to make final pardon determinations with respect to such individuals.

Morgan Stanley Broker Barry Garapedian Has Numerous Customer Complaints

The securities attorneys at Gana Weinstein LLP have been investigating Morgan Stanley broker Barry Garapedian (Garapedian). According to BrokerCheck Records, Garapedian has been subject to 14 customer disputes, two of which are still pending. The majority of these disputes concern unsuitable investment recommendations.

Most recently, in April 2018, a customer alleged that Garapedian recommended investments that were unsuitable and over-concentrated the customers funds into the investments. The customer also alleged that the account had excessive fees. The customer has requested $713,000 in damages. This dispute is currently still pending.

In March 2018, another customer similarly alleged that from 2013 to 2015, Garapedian was recommending unsuitable investments that didn’t align with the customer’s needs and goals. This dispute is currently still pending.

In March 2018, a customer alleged that from March 2013 to December 2017, Garapedian was recommending unsuitable investments that didn’t align with the customer’s investment objectives. The customer requested $106,178 in damages.

In March 2008, a customer alleged that Garapedian’s recommendation of Auction Rate Securities (ARS) was unsuitable to the customer’s investment needs and falsely represented. The case was settled at $125,000.

Auction Rate Securities are debt securities sold through a dutch auction at an interest rate that will clear the market at the lowest possible yield in order to ensure that all bidders receive the same yield. Since 2008, most auctions have failed and the market has largely collapsed – leaving many investors with illiquid investments that have long-term maturities.

All advisers are obligated to make suitable investment recommendations for their clients by following certain criteria. For an investment recommendation to be suitable, the broker must have first have a reasonable basis for recommending the security/product based off the broker’s research of the investments properties including its benefits, risks, tax consequences, and other relevant factors. In addition, the broker must also understand the customer’s specific investment objectives to determine whether or not the specific product or security being recommended is appropriate for the customer based upon their needs. Investment objectives and needs include the clients net worth, life savings, age, investor experience, and so on.

Garapedian’s record shows an unusual amount of complaints in comparison to his peers.  According to newsources, only about 7.3% of financial advisors have any type of disclosure event on their records among brokers employed from 2005 to 2015. However, studies have found that in certain parts of California, New York or Florida, the rates of disclosure go up to as high as 18%.  Brokers must publicly disclose reportable events on their CRD customer complaints, IRS tax liens, judgments, investigations, and even criminal matters.

Garapedian entered the securities industry in 1982 and has been registered with Morgan Stanley since June 2009. From March 1993 to June 2009, Garapedian was registered with Citigroup Global Markets Inc. From April 1988 to July 1993, Garapedian was registered with Lehman Brothers Inc. From March 1982 to April 1988, Garapedian was registered with E. F. Hutton & Company Inc.

81-year-old woman votes for first time in her life

COVINGTON, Ga. (WSB) - Early voting is underway in Georgia this week.

A record number of voters, both young and old, are casting their ballots, but one 81-year-old woman is voting for the first time in her life.

“I’m 81 today, but Sunday, I’ll be 82,” first-time voter Betty Cartledge said.

Cartledge has seen a lot in her 81 years, but she’s never seen the inside of a voting booth.

That was until Wednesday afternoon.

“I’m going to vote for the first time in my life,” Cartledge said before casting her ballot.

With the help of her niece, Cartledge voted for the very first time at a polling location in Covington.

Cartledge says she never voted before because her husband didn’t think she should.

Last year, her husband died.

This year, Cartledge voted.

“I was so young and everything when we got married, I didn’t ever think about it,” Cartledge said. “And then when I got old, I still didn’t think it would count.”

Bryant Hairston is also an older voter, but he is quite different from Cartledge.

“Everybody’s trying to get out here and get the vote before the last day and big, long lines. I was in and out,” Hairston said.

Hairston said he votes in every single election, big or small.

“Every election is important, right? But I had to definitely get in here for this one,” Hairston said.

While Cartledge had a little help leaving the polling place, she said it was an experience she clearly waited a lifetime for.

“It was neat. It was good,” Cartledge said.

Early voting in Georgia ends Nov. 1.
