Hubble Telescope sees spiral galaxy dancing through the Dorado constellation

The Hubble Space Telescope has snapped a new view of a spirited galaxy dancing among the stars.  NGC 1566, also called the "Spanish Dancer" galaxy, lies about 60 million light-years from Earth in the southern constellation Dorado. This new Hubble Telescope photo shows the galaxy face-on, capturing its gorgeous and grand design.  The galaxy has two distinct and graceful spiral arms that span over 100,000 light-years;  each arc half-turns from start to finish, resembling a dancer’s moving form. The spiral arms are traced by bright blue star clusters, pinkish star-forming regions and swirling interstellar dust, according to a statement from the European Space Agency (ESA).  Observations suggest NGC 1566 is weakly-barred, making it an intermediate spiral galaxy. While the galaxy boasts a bright core, it lacks a distinct bar-shaped structure at its center.  NGC 1566 belongs to the Dorado galaxy group, which is a concentration of both spiral and elliptical galaxies bound together by gravity. The Dorado Group comprises an estimated 70 galaxies, making it much larger than the Local Group that houses our own Milky Way; the Local Group contains around 30 galaxies.

40 million light-years away!! This is the Spanish Dancer also known as spiral galaxy NGC 1566. The symmetry of this glittering galactic swirl is phenomenal. The beautifully geometric NGC 1566 is home to billions of stars. yes, billions!! This galaxy, as do all galaxies, shines testament to the infinite creativity and mighty power of Almighty God.

Explanation: What's different about this galaxy? Very little, which makes the Spanish Dancer galaxy, NGC 1566, one of the most typical and photogenic spirals on the sky. There is something different about this galaxy image, though, because it is a diagonal combination of two images: one by the Hubble Space Telescope on the upper left, and the other by the James Webb Space Telescope on the lower right. The Hubble image was taken in ultraviolet light and highlights the locations of bright blue stars and dark dust along the galaxy's impressive spiral arms. In contrast, the Webb image was taken in infrared light and highlights where the same dust emits more light than it absorbed. In the rollover image, the other two sides of these images are revealed. Blinking between the two images shows which stars are particularly hot because they glow brighter in ultraviolet light, and the difference between seemingly empty space and infrared-glowing dust.
