Nick Cave: Forothermore

The “Nick Cave: Forothermore” exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City covers the entire breadth of the artist’s career, and features sculpture, installation, video, and rarely seen early works. The exhibition title is a neologism, a new word that reflects the artist’s lifelong commitment to creating space for those who feel marginalized by dominant society and culture—especially working class communities and queer people of color.

Nick Cave was born in Fulton, Missouri in 1959. He creates “Soundsuits”—surreally majestic objects blending fashion and sculpture—that originated as metaphorical suits of armor in response to the Rodney King beatings and have evolved into vehicles for empowerment. Fully concealing the body, the “Soundsuits” serve as an alien second skin that obscures race, gender, and class, allowing viewers to look without bias towards the wearer’s identity. Cave regularly performs in the sculptures himself, dancing either before the public or for the camera, activating their full potential as costume, musical instrument, and living icon. The artist also works with choreographers, dancers, and amateur performers to produce lavish community celebrations in untraditional venues for art. Dazzling in their movement, Cave’s sculptures are crafted in collaboration with artisans from a dizzying array of materials that include beads, raffia, buttons, sequins, twigs, fur, and fabric. The “Soundsuits” are also displayed in exhibitions as static sculptures, arranged as groups of figures in formation that are striking in their diversity and powerful stance.

@nickcaveart’s permanent artwork “Each One, Every One, Equal All” (2022) at Times Sq-42 St (1,2,3,7,N,Q,R,W,S) station, completed last year, is the largest #MTAArts mosaic project in the @mta system. Combining nearly 4,600 square feet of mosaic and video, the artwork captures many of Cave’s iconic #Soundsuits created over the last 20 years.

Cave’s Soundsuits can be seen in the survey exhibition “Nick Cave: Forothermore” at the Guggenheim, alongside sculpture, installation, and video work spanning from early in the artist’s career to the present. On view through April 2023.

Nick Cave: Forothermore is a survey exhibition covering the entire breadth of the artist’s career, and features sculpture, installation, video, and rarely seen early works. The title is a neologism, a new word that reflects the artist’s lifelong commitment to creating space for those who feel marginalized by dominant society and culture—especially working-class communities and queer people of color. The show both highlights the development of Cave’s singular art practice and interrogate the promises, fulfilled or broken, that the late 20th and early 21st centuries offered to the “other.”

Installed in the museum’s tower galleries, the survey’s thematic sections are titled “What It Was,” “What It Is,” and “What It Shall Be”, inspired by an old African American greeting. The exhibition unfolds as a tripartite story, with each chapter looking into the past, present, and future of Cave’s practice. “What It Was” explores early works that honor the artist’s creative and social foundations within his family and beyond. Living and working in Chicago, Cave often cites the psychedelic pageantry of George Clinton’s collective Parliament-Funkadelic and the flamboyant excess of Chicago house music as formative influences on his artistic development. “What It Is” includes Cave’s work that addresses oppression, loss, mourning, and remembrance, but also joy and collective celebration. Finally, “What It Shall Be” gathers Cave’s recent incarnation of Soundsuits and monumentally scaled Tondo works, which exemplify his survival strategies amid injustice.
