Road to The New Beginning Night 5 - 2/4/2020; NJPW At WrestleCon, Tanahashi Meet & Greet on 4/3/2020; Okada’s Pro Wrestling All-Star Olympic Summit Idea Finds Favor with AJPW, NOAH Stars
Tumblr media
The Road to The New Beginning tour resumed today, the first of three nights at Tokyo Korakuen Hall. You can watch this show now on NJPWWorld.
- 2/4/2020, Tokyo Korakuen Hall (NJPWWorld)
Ryusuke Taguchi d. Gabriel Kidd (Oh My & Garankle, 8:43)
Taiji Ishimori [Bullet Club] d. Yuya Uemura (Yes Lock, 7:47)
Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma d. Toa Henare & Yota Tsuji (Makabe > Tsuji, Boston Crab, 12:09)
Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Manabu Nakanishi d. Minoru Suzuki & DOUKI [SZKG] (Tenzan > DOUKI, Anaconda Vice, 9:01)
Shingo Takagi, EVIL & Hiromu Takahashi [Los Ingobernables] d. Hirooki Goto, Tomohiro Ishii & Robbie Eagles [CHAOS] (Hiromu > Eagles, Neck Lock, 10:31)
KENTA, Jay White & El Phantasmo [Bullet Club] d. Tetsuya Naito, SANADA & BUSHI [Los Ingobernables] (KENTA > BUSHI, Go2Sleep, 18:34)
Elimination Match: Kazuchika Okada, Will Ospreay, SHO & YOH [CHAOS] d. Taichi, Zack Sabre Jr., El Desperado & Yoshinobu Kanemaru [SZKG] (Ospreay > Sabre, Stormbreaker, 23:20)
With a direct win on Sabre, Ospreay demanded another match for the RevPro Undisputed British Heavyweight title. I admittedly have not watched the show yet, so I don’t know the order of eliminations, and NJPW didn’t list them on either website (that I can get to). KENTA provoked Naito by posing with the titles once again.
Tumblr media
You may already be aware of NJPW holding Lion’s Break: Project 3 on 4/2/2020 during Wrestlemania Weekend in Tampa, FL. Now, NJPW has announced they will have booths set up at WrestleCon, the hosting event for LBP3, from 4/2 - 4/4/2020. Along with that, a meet & greet session with Hiroshi Tanahashi has been set for 4/3/2020 as well at the show. Details are in the link I followed, just be aware, the LBP3 tickets are... pretty expensive.
Tumblr media
When Kazuchika Okada received his Tokyo Sports MVP and Best Bout awards on 1/16/2020, he gave an interview, where he had all but dared NJPW, and every other pro wrestling company in Japan, to hold an All-Star pro wrestling show during the Olympics, in order to show off puroresu to the visiting masses come to Japan. During this interview, he’d said:
Okada: Of course, being in a place like this, it would be much cooler if I had the belt with me. But not being champion actually opens new possibilities up. I can have matches that wouldn’t be possible if I were still champion. With Tokyo 2020 coming, I’d love to have a huge pro-wrestling event, one that beats out the Olympics. Involve the best from all sorts of organizations, show that the power of pro wrestling is far greater than amateur wrestling at the Olympics. That would be pretty cool. That’s the sort of thing I might be able to turn my attentions to if I’m not champion. That would be a cool thing to do.
–You want to involve promotions other than NJPW?
Okada: Right. I think we need to light a fire in the pro wrestling world in general. NJPW still has incredible possibilities and will keep tearing it up. Now, I’m in a position where I can help grow the power of all of professional wrestling.
[...]
–If you had your pick from other promotions, who would you like to wrestle?
Okada: Hmm… I haven’t faced any of the champions from other promotions. Who is there? I wrestled Ibushi when he was in a different company, (Naomichi) Marufuji from NOAH, Suwama from All Japan, Shuji Kondo from WRESTLE-1…
I’d really like to face the younger guys from other promotions. People like Kento Miyahara from All Japan, or Kaito Kiyomiya from NOAH. That would be great if we could pull it off. It’d be great if we could create something that blows the Olympics out of the water when it comes to the fans’ reception.
Yesterday, said Kento Miyahara and Kaito Kiyomiya took part in the Setsubun (day before Spring in Japan) ceremony at Honmonji Temple; wrestlers are often invited to this ceremony, as this temple is where the father of puroresu, Rikidozan, is buried, and indeed, this year, NJPW representatives included Manabu Nakanishi and Jushin Thunder Liger, but also luminaries such as Keiji Muto, Kenta Kobashi, Jun Akiyama, and others were there this year as well.
In an interview with Tokyo Sports (translated by the wonderful NOAH Superfan Hi5ame), both Miyahara and Kiyomiya were asked about this, and they did seem pretty open to the idea:
On the other hand, Miyahara, who is the face of a long established promotion said cautiously, "Personally I am very interested in it, but it does depend on the voices of the fans. [...] I think it would be interesting to do that in our generation now, and I want to do it. I would like to say to Okada and Kiyomiya, "lets do a fight that surpasses that".
Kiyomiya immediately answered, "I hope we can do it." [...] "We only made small talk, but I got a good impression. I want to see Kazuchika Okada fighting before me,"
Now, whether or not any of this happens is anyone’s guess, and with the Olympics taking up many buildings, to the point of having to delay G1 Climax until October this year, I doubt it can or will happen during the Olympiad. The last time all three of NJPW, AJPW & NOAH worked together for a big show, it was the 2011 and 2012 editions of All Together, charity supercards for the Tohoku disaster, and it was a much different time then -- all three companies had different ownership, and there was a greater sense of cooperation. Mind you, all of them have worked with each other in various degrees since then (notable: NJPW helping NOAH in 2015-2017, a move that nearly ran NOAH out of business; wrestlers from NOAH and NJPW working both the Giant Baba and Destroyer tribute shows that were, ostensibly, AJPW shows; NOAH and AJPW wrestlers appearing at Lion’s Gate shows for NJPW). But NOAH, particularly, has not wanted to have anything to do with NJPW (or Bushiroad, more to the point) since their acquisition in late 2017.
One thing in favor, is that neither Okada nor Kiyomiya are their current company’s champion, so that might help sell the idea. But this still seems like a pipe dream right now, but with Okada, Miyahara and Kiyomiya on board, who knows what may happen.
The tour continues tomorrow.
- 2/5/2020, Tokyo Korakuen Hall (NJPWWorld)
Yuya Uemura v. Gabriel Kidd
Ryusuke Taguchi v. Yota Tsuji
Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma v. Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Manabu Nakanishi
Tomohiro Ishii, Will Ospreay & Robbie Eagles [CHAOS] v. Minoru Suzuki, Zack Sabre Jr. & DOUKI [SZKG]
Hirooki Goto [CHAOS] & Toa Henare v. Shingo Takagi & EVIL [Los Ingobernables]

World Tag League 2019 Teams, Matches Announced; Lion’s Break: Project 2 Features Numerous LA Dojo Debutants; Happy Birthday Kazuchika Okada
Tumblr media
Yes, it’s the tour nobody cares about, but it’s here now.
For this year’s edition, a full 16 teams in a single block of competition will be featured. We get some veterans of this whole affair, like the current IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team champions Guerrillas of Destiny, former 2-time WTL winners GBH (Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma), and the current 2-time defending League champions EVIL & SANADA.
There are some new faces in the competition as well. For example, Terrible, the only member of the Mexican branch of Los Ingobernables still actually employed by CMLL, is back in NJPW, teaming with Shingo Takagi, also a debutant in this competition. Colt Cabana, who doesn’t seem to be tied down anywhere right now, joins his on-off partner, who are currently on for this weekend’s New Japan Showdown shows, Toru Yano.
The full lineups have been released, however I do not have time to write them up at the moment. I will do an Upcoming NJPW Events post next week to get that all sorted out. In the meantime, here are your participating teams:
Hiroshi Tanahashi & Toa Henare
Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma
Yuji Nagata & Manabu Nakanishi
Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Satoshi Kojima
Juice Robinson & David Finlay Jr.
Hirooki Goto [CHAOS] & Karl Fredericks
Tomohiro Ishii & YOSHI-HASHI [CHAOS]
Toru Yano [CHAOS] & Colt Cabana [FREE]
Jeff Cobb [ROH] & Mikey Nicholls [CHAOS]
EVIL & SANADA [Los Ingobernables]
Shingo Takagi & Terrible [Los Ingobernables]
Minoru Suzuki & Lance Archer [SZKG]
Zack Sabre Jr. & Taichi [SZKG]
Tama Tonga & Tanga Loa [Bullet Club]
KENTA & Yujiro Takahashi [Bullet Club]
Bad Luck Fale & Chase Owens [Bullet Club]
The tour starts a week from Saturday.
Tumblr media
More names have been announced for the Lion’s Break: Project 2 shows that are due to happen at Bushiroad’s CharaExpo convention on 12/7 and 12/8/2019 in Anaheim, CA. Bullet Club’s El Phantasmo as been added to the list, as has excursionee Ren Narita, and Aaron Solow as well.
They are also advertising 4 debutants to the LA Dojo/NJPW of America side of things. Barrett Brown has been advertised for this event, and I know I’ve seen him elsewhere, possibly in ROH, although he did make an appearance on WWE RAW in 2018 as an enhancement talent. Twin brother wrestlers Logan & Sterling Riegel are also announced, and I honestly know nothing about them. Indie luchador Misterioso has also been announced, and I’m confused if I’ve seen him before or not; I know I’ve seen cards announcing a Misterioso, however apparently there are a lot of those running around, as the original Misterioso who debuted in 1988 apparently has sold the rights to the name and mask to at least three different wrestlers, this one being one of them. So, maybe I’ve seen him, maybe I haven’t. I’m not sure.
In any event, card and ticketing details still have not been released for these shows. Or convention panels, whichever. However, NJPW did note that Karl Fredericks, who was originally announced, will now not be appearing, due to his participation in the World Tag League.
Last, but certainly not least, happy 32nd birthday to Kazuchika Okada! (It’s 11/8 in Japan now...)

Okada talked smack post-main. The visiting CMLL luchadores finally get another victory in their final, meaningless match in the Tag League. I really want NJPW to give me a Toa Henare v. Ayato Yoshida singles match...

The full lineups for the Lion’s Break: Project 1 shows in mid-November have been released. Remember, this is part of CharaExpo, and while standing room tickets are free, seats are not, and either way you need a badge for CharaExpo. There are only 4 matches per card.
A third LA Dojo Yong Lion, Karl Fredericks, has been added to the lineups here, joining Alex Coughlin and Clark Connors as Young Lion participants.
Still no word on if/when these will be shown on NJPWWorld.

This week, we begin several weeks of NJPW on AXS coverage of King Of Pro Wrestling, from Tokyo Ryogoku Kokugikan on 10/8/2018. This week’s featured matches include the IWGP Junior Heavyweight title tournament final between KUSHIDA v. Marty Scurll, as well as the unveiling of the newest member of Los Ingobernables de Japon... whom you can see if you just scroll up. It’s still a fun match.
Tomorrow is the final tour show, before Power Struggle 2018 on Saturday. SHO & YOH must win to make the Finals. Believe it or not this show WILL be live on NJPWWorld!
- 11/1/2018, Shizuoka Twin Messe (NJPWWorld)

Lion’s Break: Project 1 Nights 1 & 2 - 11/10/2018 & 11/11/2018
Tumblr media
The two small cards that were produced for Bushiroad’s CharaExpo convention in Anaheim this weekend have taken place. As reported yesterday, Jeff Cobb had flight issues getting from Buffalo to Anaheim on Saturday, so he was scratched from that card and the promised Goto v. Cobb rematch did not take place there. Maybe WK13, who knows. Presumably Cobb will not be in Toronto tonight for the final ROH Global Wars show, even tho Cobb is ROH’s current TV champion. No indication as to if or when these matches will make NJPWWorld etiher.
Lion’s Break: Project 1 - 11/10/2018, Anaheim Coonvention Center Hall B, Anaheim, CA
Karl Fredericks TLD Alex Coughlin (10:00)
Ryusuke Taguchi d. Rocky Romero [CHAOS] (Rolling Clutch Hold, 9:24)
David Finlay Jr. d. Jushin Thunder Liger (Prima Nocta, 8:40)
Hirooki Goto [CHAOS] d. ACH [FREE] (ACH, 12:54)
- 11/11/2018, Anaheim Convention Center Hall B, Anaheim, CA
ACH [FREE] d. Karl Fredericks (German Suplex Hold, 5:08)
Jushin Thunder Liger d. Clark Connors (5:09)
Jeff Cobb [FREE] & Ryusuke Taguchi d. Hirooki Goto & Rocky Romero [CHAOS] (Cobb > Romero, Tour of the Islands, 17:15)
Kenny Omega [The Elite] d. David Finlay Jr. (One Winged Angel, 12:41)
I don’t think there was any thought for a second that Finlay would best Omega. Also, FInlay pinning Liger seems wrong to me. Goto v. ACH... that might have been interesting! All in all, nothing critical or meaningful, just an exhibition of one of Bushiroad’s properties at Bushiroad’s own convention. Fun little cards, it is what it is.
The final Global Wars is tonight from Toronto, and I’ll report on it tomorrow as I am not staying up to blog about it. Later this week will be an Upcoming NJPW Events post where I’ll have the full listings for the World Tag League. Also, we were supposed to record the next podcast this weekend but things got in the way of that. Maybe next week.

NJPW Presenta CMLL Fantasticamania 2020 Night 5 - 1/16/2020; Lion’s Break: Project 3 Announced For Mania Weekend in Tampa 4/2/2020; RIP Rocky Johnson (1944 - 2020)
Tumblr media
The tour resumed today, the first of four nights at Tokyo Korakuen Hall. You can see this now on NJPWWorld. Today featured the first round of the CMLL Family Tag Tournament.
- 1/16/2020, Tokyo Korakuen Hall (NJPWWorld)
Fuego & Ryusuke Taguchi d. Namajague & DOUKI [SZKG] (Fuego > DOUKI, Sunset Flip, 7:22)
Audaz & Guerrero Maya Jr. d. Luciferno & Yoshinobu Kanemaru [SZKG] (Audaz > Luciferno, Moonsault, 10:18)
EVIL, Shingo Takagi & BUSHI [Los Ingobernables] d. Flyer, Dulce Gardenia & Hiroshi Tanahashi (Takagi > Dulce, Pumping Bomber, 11:01)
Forastero & Shigeo Okumura d. Titan & Stuka Jr. (Forastero > Titan, Triangle Choke, 9:06)
Ultimo Guerrero & Barbaro Cavernario d. Satoshi Kojima & Caristico (Cavernario > Caristico, La Cavernaria, 13:03)
CMLL Family Tag Tournament 1st Round: Sanson & Cuatrero d. Euforia & Soberano Jr. (Cuatrero > Soberano, Abrazo de Oso Invertida, 9:30)
CMLL Family Tag Tournament 1st Round: Angel de Oro & Niebla Roja d. Negro Casas & Tiger (Roja > Tiger, La Campana, 12:55)
As expected, Oro/Roja and the NGD duo win, in order to set up a final that is as much heat-building for the title match on Monday as it is its own event. Ingobernables v. Flyer/Dulce/Tanahashi and Kojima/Caristico v. UG/Cavernario are also worth watching, especially as now there is a direct win against Caristico by Cavernario heading into their own title match Monday.

Despite not working with Ring of Honor this year for any sort of G1 Supercard (and really, after last year, who can blame them?), NJPW will in fact be part of Wrestlemania weekend down in Tampa, FL this April. Just announced yesterday, Lion’s Break: Project 3 will be part of WrestleCon, at the Ritz Ybor in Tampa, on Thursday 4/2/2020 at 3pm Eastern. This is usually a smaller show by design, and so far the only talents announced are Hiroshi Tanahashi, Ren Narita, Clark Connors, Alex Coughlin and Karl Fredericks. Tickets range from $50 - $150, which is quite different from how the ticketing worked for the previous 2 Lion’s Break shows. The tickets are on sale now, at https://wrestlecon.showclix.com/
We’ll let you know when we know more info about other talents and a match card.
Tumblr media
Another death in the pro wrestling family, this time Rocky Johnson, at the age of 75. Rocky Johnson is probably more known today for being the father of The Rock, Dwayne Johnson, however he was a mainstay territory wrestler for all of his career, beginning in 1966 in Canada. He mostly worked in the NWA, working quite a bit in Championship Wrestling from Florida, Georgia Championship Wrestling, Mid-Atlantic, some stops in Continental, etc. He also had a somewhat famous run in the WWF from 1982-1985, during which he would hold the WWF World Tag Team titles with Tony Atlas... despite, apparently, the two men hating each other in real life.
Johnson worked a single tour in NJPW, the New Year Golden Series in 1980, from 1/4/1980 - 2/5/1980, working 28 matches in all. He was never up for any titles in NJPW, but he would get to feature in singles matches against the likes of Antonio Inoki, Riki Choshu, Seiji Sakaguchi, Junji Hirata, Strong Kobayashi, and others of the time. Indeed, he was frequently teamed with Stan Hansen on this tour as well. I’ve not had a chance to check on NJPWWorld if any of his matches are on there from this tour, but here’s hoping. Surprisingly, this appeared to be Rocky’s only tour of Japan at all in his long career. At least he got to make the trip.
Our thoughts go out to The Rock, and to all of Rocky Johnson’s friends and family.
The tour continues tomorrow, live on NJPWWorld, and includes the finals to the CMLL Family Tag Tournament.
- 1/17/2020, Tokyo Korakuen Hall (NJPWWorld)
Fuego & Ryusuke Taguchi v. Luciferno & DOUKI [SZKG]
Stuka Jr., Flyer & Guerrero Maya Jr. v. Shigeo Okumura, Namajague & Yoshinobu Kanemaru [SZKG]
Audaz, Dulce Gardenia & Hiroshi Tanahashi v. EVIL, Shingo Takagi & BUSHI [Los Ingobernables]
Titan v. Forastero
Satoshi Kojima & Caristico v. Ultimo Guerrero & Barbaro Cavernario
CMLL Family Tag Tournament 3rd Place: Euforia & Soberano Jr. v. Negro Casas & Tiger
CMLL Family Tag Tournament Final: Angel de Oro & Niebla Roja v. Sanson & Cuatrero

World Tag League 2019 Night 17 - 12/8/2019: Winners Determined, Dragon Lee Has Slight Name Change & Challenges Liger, Moxley Appears For Challenge, Jericho Video; Lion’s Break: Project 2 Night 2 - 12/8/2019
Tumblr media
The Final night of the World Tag League 2019 took place today, and, hoo, boy, a lot happened. You can see it all now on NJPWWorld.
- 12/8/2019, Hiroshima Green Arena (NJPWWorld)
World Tag League 2019: Yuji Nagata & Manabu Nakanishi d. Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Satoshi Kojima (Nagata > Tenzan, Nagata Lock II, 9:49)
World Tag League 2019: Toru Yano [CHAOS] & Colt Cabana [FREE] d. Bad Luck Fale & Chase Owens [Bullet Club] (Cabana > Owens, Superman Pin,

World Tag League 2019: Hiroshi Tanahashi & Toa Henare d. Hirooki Goto [CHAOS] & Karl Fredericks (Henare > Fredericks, Toa Bottom, 10:15)
World Tag League 2019: Minoru Suzuki & Lance Archer [SZKG] d. KENTA & Yujiro Takahashi [Bullet Club] (Archer > Yujiro, EBD Claw, 11:24)
Kota Ibushi, Jushin Thunder Liger & Tiger Mask IV d. Kazuchika Okada, SHO & YOH [CHAOS] (Ibushi > YOH, Kamigoye, 12:35)
World Tag League 2019: Tomohiro Ishii & YOSHI-HASHI [CHAOS] d. Tama Tonga & Tanga Loa [Bullet Club] (YOSHI-HASHI > Loa, 16:43)
World Tag League 2019: Juice Robinson & David Finlay Jr. d. EVIL & SANADA [Los Ingobernables] (Finlay > EVIL, Acid Drop, 24:01) - FinJuice win the World Tag League 2019
Congratulations to Juice Robinson & David Finlay Jr., as they win their first-ever World Tag League. Of course, following this, they made the challenge to Guerrillas of Destiny, a team they beat along the way, for the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team titles at Wrestle Kingdom 14, date to be determined. This actually is a fresh title match, so that’s good.
Therefore, EVIL/SANADA do not get to threepeat, and due to Zack Sabre Jr. attacking SANADA backstage post-main, I would say at this moment that is half of Los Ingobernable de Japon that have nothing meaningful to do for WK14, which, Not Great!
Quite a bit happened in the wake of the Okada v. Ibushi 6-man match. First off, Okada shoved the IWGP Heavyweight belt right in Ibushi’s face, to which Ibushi clobbered Okada with the briefcase, and proceeded to stomp him out. So there’s a nice bit of drama. However, that wasn’t all.
Tumblr media
As everyone went to the back, Liger stayed behind, ostensibly to say his farewells to Hiroshima (which he would do), but a video message appeared, with Dragon Lee, now calling himself Ryu Lee, making a challenge to Liger before he retired, with the heavy heavy implication that Jushin Thunder Liger v. Ryu Lee will be Liger’s final match, on 1/5/2020, before his retirement ceremony at New Year Dash!! on 1/6/2020. Liger appeared to accept this, so get ready, wrestling fans. Ryu Lee is the new name, at least in NJPW, as he has been appearing as Dragon Lee in both ROH and AAA of late, since his unceremonious firing from CMLL back in September. CMLL does own the trademark on Dragon Lee (indeed, he isn’t even the first to be Dragon Lee; that would be his brother, the current Mistico II). However, “ryu” is a Japanese word for dragon, so really, it’s the same name, only Nihongoized. I have no idea if he will continue as Ryu Lee outside of NJPW, or even if he will be in NJPW longer than WK14. There was the report that Rush claimed Dragon/Ryu Lee was signing to NJPW, and that has been, *ahem*, unofficially confirmed to me by Sources, however nothing is official til it’s official, but this is a really good sign, and a great final match for Liger.
Ryu Lee was hardly the only one making appearances. The International Purveyor of Violence, Jon Moxley, would appear after Suzuki/Archer’s match, and challenge  Archer to get “his belt back at the Dome.” A staredown ensued, which also lead to a Death Rider by Moxley on Archer, AND ONE ON MINORU SUZUKI! So consider Mox v. Archer for the title, and possibly Mox v. Suzuki on 1/5/2020 booked. AEW’s Le Champion, Chris Jericho, also made a video appearance, taunting Hiroshi Tanahashi, saying their encounter on 1/5/2020 would be Tanahashi’s retirement. Hirooki Goto also attacked KENTA backstage as well. And hey, Nagata/Nakanishi finally get another win! Hurrah!
Like I said, a lot happened here. Final World Tag League 2019 standings:
FinJuice: 26pts (13W 0D 2L) ***WINNERS*** EVIL/SANADA: 26pts (13W 0D 2L) GOD: 24pts (12W 0D 3L) Ishii/YOSHI-HASHI: 22pts (11W 0D 4L) Sabre/Taichi: 18pts (9W 0D 6L) Yano/Cabana: 18pts (9W 0D 6L) Suzuki/Archer: 18pts (9W 0D 6L) KENTA/Yujiro: 16pts (8W 0D 7L) Cobb/Nicholls: 16pts (8W 0D 7L) Shingo/Terrible: 12pts (6W 0D 9L) Fale/Owens: 12pts (6W 0D 9L) GBH: 8pts (4W 0D 11L) TenKoji: 8pts (4W 0D 11L) TanaHenare: 6pts (3W 0D 12L) Goto/Fredericks: 6pts (3W 0D 12L) Nagata/Nakanishi: 4pts (2W 0D 13L)

El Desperado & Yoshinobu Kanemaru [SZKG] d. Ryusuke Taguchi & Rocky Romero [CHAOS] (10:23)
Nothing too special here, pretty heel-heavy in the results. Once again, a STARDOM exhibition match was held as well, with Mayu Iwatani & Tam Nakano once again defeating Sumie Sakai & Nicole Savoy, this time Mayu tapping out Sakai with a Sharpshooter.  It would not surprise me if there is a Lion’s Break-esque STARDOM card for next year’s CharaExpo as well.
And that’s it for now, until the Road to Tokyo Dome cards are announced. Only three NJPW events left in 2019. Until then, have a good one.
