Notes on: Only On Weekends
Today, we are checking out Only On Weekends! They are a 4 man band consisting of Harry Rose (lead vocals/guitar); Anthony Dandrea (drums); John Devine (Bass) and James Neal (guitar/vocals).
When asked if they were Philly based, they said, “technically we’re all from South Jersey, but we find it easier to tell people Philly.” Anthony and James grew up in Collingswood; Harry is from Cherry Hill and John is from the Washington Township. Anthony and James went to school together, and they’y all been friends for quite a while.
The band took some time to answer questions, so we could get a little insight and get to know them a little.
------------------------------
What has been your favorite venue to play so far in your journey?
OOW: Probably The Boneyard in Atlantic City, sadly it’s closed now.
Oh man. Sorry to hear that. What made that show stand out?
OOW: We played there a bunch of times, and there was always good crowds. And we always have a fun time in Atlantic City.
Awesome. Going off that question, what is your dream venue?
OOW: The Trocadero. Everyone voted that.
Where's that at? If you don't mind my asking?
OOW: In Philadelphia. Used to be a burlesque theater a long time ago.
Oh wow! Do you tour with other bands, and if so, which band/s have been the most fun to tour/do a show with?
OOW: We’ve never done a tour with another band, but one of our favorite bands to play with is a Philly band called Nobody Yet (https://www.facebook.com/nobodyyet/) And Rosedale!
Haha. I haven't heard of Nobody Yet, I'll have to check them out. And of course Rosedale.
OOW: Wellllllll they are unfortunately done playing but u can find their music.
Oh no! I will definitely look into their music though. Who some of your influences, as a band? Or individually?
OOW: Harry - The Matches, Saves the Day, and The Beach Boys. Anthony-Green Day, Face to Face and Saves the Day. Jim - Face to Face, No Ise for a Name, and The Darkness. John - Lagwagon, NSync, and Michael Jackson (he likes to dance).
Dancing is fun! I like NSYNC as well. I don't think that's ever going to stop haha.
OOW: Never should!
How do you handle nerves before a show? If you have any.
OOW: (They sent a beer emoji)
Beer? I would probably be one that needed beer. I would get nervous before presenting in classes.
OOW: Hahaha, for some of us! Anthony’s a pro he’s has nerves of steel. Also loosening up by rocking out to Sundae Booty Sundae by Reggie and the Full Effect.
Interesting. Ok, so, a question I ask everyone, what's the story behind the name of your band?
OOW: (Harry answered this one) We came up with the name in high school. When people used to pick on us and call us “gay” we replied “only on weekends” and made a joke about it.
Oh wow. And the name stuck.
OOW: Yup! Going on almost 20 years now.
Wow! That's quite a bit of experience doing shows. Do you have any tips for other's just starting?
OOW: Be on time. Bring your equipment. Know what your set is. Have Fun. And hangout for the whole show... you may find a band/bands you really like.
Definitely. I agree on that last one. My friends and I always stayed for every band. And we were never disappointed.
OOW: Yea it’s the right thing to do and you can make new contacts and friends.
Oh heck yeah! That's how we met Mike, and it's great networking, and can be a great asset to bands and promoters. Just a couple more questions. Where do you see yourselves in five years?
OOW: Hopefully still having fun doing this!
And, last one, Mike said you were going on tour soon. What are some upcoming dates that people can look forward to?
OOW: Yea... we are playing in Philly on 3/29 then we have a small tour at the end of April 4/26-4/28 we will be going to Canada , Michigan then Chicago (Link below with all the tour dates). Then we’re playing at Bells Lake in Blackwood NJ this summer on 6/22
Nice. Are there any shout outs to other bands you'd like to make?
OOW: Here are the bands we’re playing with in our upcoming shows! American Standard, Driving Underwater, Wolves Can’t Dance, Rosedale Trauma Lanes, Almost Made the Mixtape, Fit the Bill, Farhampton, and Welcome to Jonestown
And also, thank you so much for taking time to answer these questions.
OOW: No problem! Thank you so much for checking us out!
