Biofilm buildup in cpvc pipes

Biofilm buildup on PVC and PE pipes can be a major cause of poor water quality. This type of growth is created when microorganisms settle on the inner surfaces of the pipes and produce a layer of biofilm. This layer subsequently contaminates water. There are several factors that contribute to biofilm formation, including temperature, biocide concentrations, hydraulic conditions, stagnation time and the type of pipe material. Biofilms can also contain organic compounds that can adversely affect water quality.

To study biofilm buildup in Cpvc pipes, researchers collected four samples of biofilms from each pipe end. The swabs were collected in triplicate and each sample was grouped into three sections for microbiological analysis and morphological examination. During the study, we noted that active biomass in pipe sections increased with time, from top to bottom. We found that the majority of the samples were dominated by Nitrospira spp. and Terrimonas spp.

The study also found that the shape of the pipe plays an important role in biofilm growth. The section configuration of the pipe can significantly reduce biofilm development. For example, pipe sections that are fastened are more likely to have less biofilm. Fastening reduces biofilm development by up to 16 times when compared to those that are not fastened.
