#DearTeenParent, once you decide that you want to parent your child please remember that you are not a mistake and neither is your personal choice to parent a child. Society is wrong, youre both amazing.

Have you heard of #NoTeenShame?
I came across a really interesting campaign today that I might not have been on board with a year or two ago. The campaign is called No Teen Shame and the link to their tumblr is below.
The campaign is fighting back against the shaming of young families that happens as part of pregnancy prevention programs and media campaigns. While the young moms behind No Teen Shame agree that pregnancy is best delayed until after the teen years, they want pregnancy prevention programs to stop shaming those teenagers who do have children and instead offer comprehensive sex education so that everyone can make informed choices.
Last year I worked at an organization that had a program in place to support teen parents. The program director explained to me that the organization offers sex education and works to prevent teen pregnancy, but it also wants to provide a safe, supportive community for teen moms and dads so that they can gain parenting skills and be the best possible parents to their kids while taking care of their own needs. For so much of my life I had been hammered with the message that teen pregnancy=failure in life that I hadn't even considered that teens can actually be good parents. Sure, it's much harder to take care of children while trying to finish your own formal education, but that doesn't mean it can't be done. We need more support services, more preventative education, and less shaming. That's why I'm on board with #NoTeenShame

#NoTeenShame at CLPP THIS Weekend!
We may not be bombarding your social media feeds, but #NoTeenShame is definitely busy working on new projects, and we can’t wait to share them all with our partners and supporters.  I am so excited to meet some of my fellow NTS mamas in Amherst this weekend at the Civil Liberties and Public Policy Conference! If you haven’t heard about this event yet, you must go to their website and look it up – it’s a great opportunity for activists to come together and discuss best practices, learn about each other, and take back best practices to their colleagues, partners and their clients.
We’re not just attending the conference – we’ll be presenting! Our workshop is titled “A Teen Parent Inclusive Movement.” We will be discussing the importance of society to understand it is young people’s right to dictate their own reproductive justices without being stigmatized and shame.  We will be talking about reproductive justice, positive messaging, and the continuing intersectionality in the issues impacting young families. I can’t wait to get the conversation started and to continue to gain allies and supporters to strengthen the #NoTeenShame movement! You can follow along – we’ll be on social media all day long – use the hashtag #noteenshame #clpp2016
