YS-1006P [Mil Mi-8MTV-1 'hip'] seen at Huka Falls. (2023)
One of Taupō's more interesting attractions is the last remaining Mil logger left in Aotearoa.
c/n 40705 was built new to the Fuerza Aérea Revolucionaria, Cuba and is supposed to have flown both Fidel Castro and Daniel Ortega while in Cuba.
It was sold to El Salvador and used as a heavy lifter before being exported here with YS-1005P. Both arrived at NZAA courtesy of a Cubana de Aviación Ilyushin IL-76 (msn 0043454616, CU-T1258)
After -1005P had a fatal accident off the West Coast of Aotearoa, all Mil helicopters were permanently grounded, and eventually, the remaining choppers were sent back home to Russia.
1006P was left at Taupō Airport (TUP/NZAP) until 1994, when it was picked up by the local scenic flight operator and became a useful advertising tool.

Introduction Post!
Hey there! Did you know that Wellington is absolutely full to the brim with history and archaeology? Neither did I! This blog is dedicated to the archaeology of the worlds coolest (and windiest) capital - from pre-colonial Māori settlement to 1900 let's explore Wellington together!
According to Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga - archaeology is all about the discovery, recovery and interpretation of evidence of past human activity in its context in or above the ground, water or coastal marine area. Under New Zealand law (Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act 2014) an archaeological site involves any pre-1900 human activity where there is evidence relating to the history of Aotearoa New Zealand.
Feel free to use the photos included on this blog. All of them will be mine - if the photo does not belong to me credit will be given. Header image is a royalty free image by Barni1 on PixaBay.

Bus Travel NZ (Tranzit Group) № 3105 [Optare MetroCity V1080MC] seen on a Blue Bus service earlier this year.
3105 and 31?? were transferred from the Wairarapa to Tāmiki Makaurau in order to staff the transfer bus from car parks D and E of Auckland Int'l. However, this was short-lived as both buses proved immensely unreliable and 31?? never entered service due to constant breakdowns.
Tranzit then put 872 [MAN 15.250/MCV eVolution] on the run, which has now been replaced with a van for some reason. I am honestly unsure why on earth a van is filling in for this service. Instead of something with dedicated luggage racks, like the B7RLEs* or the remaining Wrightbus Streetlite-DFs**. Not to mention the lack of EVs. Frankly, something needs to change and fast. The car traffic at NZAA is abysmal, as I found out just last week, and it is easily solved by adding more buses.
*Assigned to Green Bus (terminal transfer)
**Assigned to Yellow Bus (hotels). All Wrightbus Streetlite-DFs sold to Uzabus, replaced with EVs.

Narrative Research
Tapu Te Ranga
Evidence of Māori usage of Tapu Te Ranga as a pa or settlement comes in the form of archeologically discover “pits, terraces, middens and ovens” (Wellington City Libraries). Oral history notes that Island Bay and Tapu Te Ranga was a kainga (dwelling) site during times of raids upon Whanganui a Tara (Wellington). Tapu Te Ranga has oral accounts of being a place of refuge during times of conflict, while Uruhau pa on land (which is now known as Orchy Cres Lookout) served as a main defence point. “As shown by Best's map, this island was the site of a small pa following Te Atiawa's invasion of Te Whanganui a Tara”. The island symbolises a great traditional and history value, it should be highly respected.

Owhiro Bay
The quarry that existed in Owhiro Bay once provided rock for roads and buildings across Wellington but now serves as a recreational reserve. It has a documented history of 1000 dating back to pre-European, Māori inhabitation. Kainga settlement sites have been recognised through remnants of cooking tools that have been found.
The hazardous road around the cliffside towards the Quarry was nickname the ‘Runaround’ by locals. It has, in fact, had the treacherous past of taking more than one life in the event of rogue waves washing over the road. The quarry was informally founded in 1908 by Enoch Tonks Jnr, naming the company ‘Tonks and Andrews’. Horse and shovel was the original means of technology to obtaining resources until further modernisation led to machinery such as a rock crushing plant. The resources gathered from the Quarry boast usage in some of Wellington’s government buildings and city infrastructure.
Atkinson, Lucy, and Brian Bouzaid. The Story of Owhiro Bay Quarry. p. 67.
Cook Strait
The Cook Strait is a prominent part of New Zealand geographical arrangement, connecting two seas (Pacific and Tasman) while separating the North and South islands. The strait boasts a reputation of chaotic waters and is 22km wide. While now named after James Cook, Māori referred to it as Raukawa Moana. There is a rich history associated with the waters, shipwrecks to technological and human feats. Major maritime disasters such as the Penguin in 1909, which left only 30 of 105 passengers on board alive, and Wahine in 1968, which is known as New Zealand’s worst modern maritime tragedy with 51 people losing their lives to the wreck. The Cook Strait is, understandably, known for it’s part in unpredictable, wild weather which often gets thrown at Wellington. However, it also has a cherry history of ferries, incredible feats of human strength in crossing it and technological developments such as the telephone line that connected the two islands together.

Island Bay
Island Bay has a rich history dating back Māori settlements within the valley and Uruhau pa site on the hill. According to Wellington City Library, ‘Uruhau’ means ‘windy head’ whereas Māori dictionary translate it as a verb for being happy or content. The pa site has seen bloodshed and conflict over tribal land raids, evidence can be found in the dug terraces within the hillside and archeological findings. Tapu Te Ranga provides shelter from the rough South Coast that enables Island Bay to be a suitable place for docking boats and gathering seafood for both Māori and European settlers. A strong Italian fishing community was established in Island Bay, the bait-house and family cottages are still present in from this past on the site. It now serves as a marine education centre as part of established Island Bay Marine reserve.

Aerolíneas Argentinas powering out of NZAA (2020). During the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, a number of airlines that had either ceased flying into Auckland in the years piror or had never graced our skies turned up in order to repatriate citizens.
Unfortunately, I missed out on getting photos of Lufthansa and Austrian, but I did get Aerolíneas Argentinas multiple times.
LV-FVI [Airbus A330-200] was in and out during this period, and during the brief reprieve from the pandemic, I was able to get it at NZAA instead of a park near my house.
