so I got to the 'that's a pogue if I've ever seen one" scene and man... what was the reason. we see jj in a rare moment of complete sincerity, without any jokes or light tone, explaining how devoted he knows pope is. and then he does minimise the very genuine and loving thing he says, except not with a joke, but by saying "that's just one man's opinion, though." it's not a fact or some generic idea it's just his opinion it's his feelings and he diminishes them because he doesn't see himself as worthy but he's telling kiara because she is. because he knows she's who pope wants and more than anything jj just wants pope to be happy. he's just laid his own feelings bare to kie clearly trying to get her to see him the same way because he's just one man but kie isn't... he's saying what he never would to pope himself saying please see him the way I do please love him the way I do but can't ever show him... show him the love that I can't give him but that he deserves...

sorry rafe and ward ARE interesting they're obviously not sympathetic but watching these two people go so far beyond any moral redemption and completely lose themselves digging deeper and deeper whilst trying to get out of the hole they've put themselves in is SO fascinating. and then there's that closer bond they grow together because they are the only people who can care about each other anymore, because they're both too far gone to be loved by anyone else. they're stuck with this story and they've gotta play it out and the only people they really have is each other

the good:

- pope's storyline. should've been the driving plot from day one but at least it's happening now <3

- cleo is a really good addition and even if she is used to be paired romantically w another pogue I think they've set that up really well by making us watch her interact w jb and sarah first, so we already have a pretty solid grasp of who she is on her own

- uh-

- john b's funky shirts!

- popekie were set up but at least it added fuel to the lesbian kie fire

- rafe. i do not know what they did this season but it really just worked, man. he's such a compelling antagonist and a really good example of a character who has dimensions but isn't symoathetic or morally gray- he's irredeemably awful and it makes for SUCH good tv. i've literally rewatched season one clips and they really aren't the same idk what made s2 rafe so interesting but they better do it again because he got me through so many rough patches of the season

- i'm literally thinking so hard and i have nothing else. there's some good parts and all but nothing concrete i can point to and compliment :// yikes!

the bad:

- i never ever ever ever ever ever ever want to see topper again. i would pay good money for them to write him off without explanation the way they do a sibling in a 90s sitcom. there is absolutely nothing to him i cannot stand his ass

- the characterisation this season sucked! won't elaborate but we all know!

- popekie were set up. never liked them, i don't want them together. but they were set. up. and that really pisses me off

- this season did not let characters breathe. it refused to let conflicts exist for longer than a few eps and never actually explored anything in depth. it's afraid to commit, character-wise, and so weighs on a mediocre and fast-action plot instead. in doing that, they force characters to move on too quick and we never see anything interesting play out because the status quo changes every five minutes. and i think that basically sums up the main problem.

- gonna get real cunty here. the pate brothers are spineless and need to grow a pair next season because IF they get a season 3 it will be a fucking shambles if they don't finally make real decisions wrt their characters. stop trying to appease fans, stop trying to please everyone, just pick a path, really explore it, and fucking stick with it. i can tolerate a storyline i don't like but sometimes i'd watch an episode and it's like. did the WRITERS like this? is this what they wanted? because it doesn't fucking seem like it.
