thinking about my blackwall-mancing cadash, fletcher. they're not especially cutthroat compared to some family members, but they also don't feel bad about their job. it's the family business, it pays the bills. nothing more, nothing less. if ppl look at them like a criminal, well they'd already be looked down on for being a dwarf so what does it matter really

and they like blackwall, a lot. but his thing with Goodness and Heroism and such makes them. hesitant. a bit. he doesn't seem to think badly of THEM, but he's clearly got specific ideas of what's Right. and half the time it seems like he forgets that they're a criminal, as if blackwall is buying into their reputation as a holy figure

and then Revelations happens. and fletcher is like oh i see. you hate yourself becuz you couldn't live up to your own ideals. and you project that loudly onto everything else becuz you feel hopeless. but it's not really about anyone or anything else, it's about your own pain. because you believe in better but don't believe YOU can be better. i see.

still, couldn't you have told me all this before i rode all the way out to val royeaux?

just been having the time of my life with this picrew, so here’s more ocs!

beards

adia and raleigh have very luxurious, long beards, always carefully coiffed and braided. garza doesn’t keep a beard, but has an equally luxurious mustache, with neatly trimmed stubble. their facial hair is an emblem of their dwarven pride and they enjoy spending the time on the routine their beards require.

fletcher’s beard is more of a thick mat of stubble, about a quarter inch thick, that covers the lower half of their face. they do nothing more than the requisite care and have no strong feelings about it either way. every now and then, they grow it out, but always cut it again.

eliseo’s beard is.. perfunctory. his face feels naked without one but he doesn’t care for all the upkeep. it’s shaggy and chopped, a bit-lopsided. he runs beard oil through it now and then and cuts it himself with his daggers when it gets long enough to be annoying.

reza doesn’t like to be completely clean-shaven, but her personal issues of dwarfiness prevent her from growing anything close a beard. she keeps a neat goatee of stubble, enough to make a point when among dwarves, but enough to be seen as one when among humans.

cadeyrn has an impressive handlebar mustache which he’s typically very vain about even if he doesn’t understand the fanaticism. in the merchant’s guild, you can’t get any respect without a well-kept beard, and his mother would skin him alive if he did anything to shame her. the mustache is their compromise.

jude is half-elf, and even though it’s not true that elves don’t grow beards, it is rare. their facial hair is thin and brittle. while they want to honor the dwarven side of their heritage, it gets them odd looks in the alienage. mostly, jude goes clean-shaven, but every now and then, grows out what stubble they can and trims it into something fashionable.
