Okay SO

My S/I in Konohagakure is LOUDLY trans, like, whole backstory and stuff. So he chooses the name Seto when he gets older so I'm going to use that name for him during this whole answer.

Seto and Kakashi are only a year apart in age, Seto a year older, but because Kakashi was a child genius and everything Seto fucking HAAAATED him as a kid. Because he was forced to Kunoichi courses that he hated and was awful at and meanwhile Kakashi was already rising ranks and Seto was *jealous*.

Seto was unofficially adopted by Jiraiya (as Jiraiya is prone to do) and Jiraiya sees this young kid who HATES Kakashi even though Kakashi before the age of 13 has seen untold horrors and he's like. Alright chill. You talk about him an awful lot. I can work with this.

So basically Jiraiya plays the long game to soften Seto up to Kakashi, figuring out in the process that his teenage charge has a crush on the young genius.

So around the time Kakashi has to leave the Anbu and starts training academy graduates, Seto gets a side job (they're a Chuunin though could be a Jonin if they put a bit more effort in) as Konohagakure's first talk therapist. And Jiraiya sees this dual transitionary period as a perfect time to get them to reconcile from past discomfort with each other. Kakashi obviously respects Jiraiya and he's my dad so we don't think anything of it when he invites us individually to his place then BAM

We're just sitting there awkwardly looking at each other.

But after a little bit of touching talk we come to a mutual understanding that we aren't who we were as kids, I'm a boy now who had a shitty time and who everyone mocks as an adult because of my career choice and Kakashi has, once again, seen untold horrors his whole young life.

At that meeting they strike up a mutual respect, which quickly grows into a romantic flame. By the time of official canon Team 7 with NaruSasuSaku, Seto and Kakashi are still heavily secret for Kakashi's comfort but they're so stupid in love. And when Kakashi wants to start a play fight he starts talking about Jiraiya's books.

My ship tag for them, Konohagakure's Finest, is kind of multi-layered. On Kakashi's side, it refers to how he's one of the best nin in that village and there's a tongue-in-cheek aspect (in my head) that he may be "Finest" but he's DEEPLY traumatized. Meanwhile it's FULLY tongue-in-cheek for Seto because he's just a Chuunin with a dumb dream of helping the traumatized people of the village since holy shit, you know? He's got some fire power in his jutsu and can take on missions as a Chuunin but he's not a strategist in battle. When people in the village call them "the Finest the village has to offer" they're being HEAVILY mocking and sarcastic.

It's okay, Kakashi snuggles the pain away on his nights at home
