the world would be better if if we just let people fansub popular anime again

part of why older stuff (idm like retro i mean pre-2014) and obscure stuff that doesnt get licensed is more fun is because fansub is... i won't say its ALWAYS better than official subs, but for what it is official subs are in an unethical spot right now, paying the timers, translators and QC (if they even opt for QC) literal peanuts. ofc fansubbers were expected to put stuff out asap if its a popular airing anime, but even then people didnt mind or rather didnt think to care if the episode dropped the next day. then theres stuff thats subbed after the fact so those projects have extra love put into them... fansubbing and fan translation in general is such an intimate practice that makes things feel more fuzzy, thats why fandoms that tend to rely on them like tokusatsu, kids anime and hobby anime tend to feel close knitted (for better or for worse lmao. especially toku fandom fuck that)... and it IS an experience. i tried to clean up mashin eiyuuden wataru's translation at some point, finished like one episode and while it was fun I felt really tired. bandai released a TL but i know i wouldnt be too satisfied by it so i decided that one day i could possibly pick it back up when my jp is stronger and thinking isnt so exhausting

obvs not calling official subs passionless but its really hard to make a case for them when the cost of them coming out within hours of broadcast is wanton typos, simple translation mistakes, staff not being paid properly or even credited (crunchy doesnt credit lmao)... the lack of formatting and styling for the subs, like i really do not like how they look on there. the placement of signs messes up all the time

honestly fansubs are king for me, fansub is art, we cant let that culture die out
