Week 1: Training reflections
It’s gone OK. 
I thrive on structure. I love plans. I trust the process of running and the experts that developed this plan. Getting into the mindset of training has got me out of bed and running before 6.00am which hasn’t since training for the half. After working out all my tempo paces (easy steady, tempo and marthon) it’s been a technical and mathematical challenge in terms of setting up the various tempo runs. I bought the FitBit Versa 3 in January this year and now mega regret not going for a Garmin, but hey-ho, I’m lucky to have a smart watch in general. Today I got confused about my average pace and ended up doing a 5km pace effort instead of one at 60% but I knew in my body something was up. I knew the percieved rate of effort was too high and dialed back. This gave me confidence in knowing the signs — listening to my breathing and getting into my body enough to know what effort is apprporate for what runs/sections. I’m going to fiddle about and ask a few friends on the best setting for their watches. I went our super basic with all the splits and pace efforts written on my hand, but it kinda works. The online calculator tells me my easy pace is between 6:50-7:15 per km. As I was starting of with a 10 minute easy run today a trio of female cyclists who had stoped to adjust their backbacks looked at me plodding along and clapped, encouraging me to keep going and that I was doing so well. I realised that my easy pace is tantamount to a very slow shuffle and someone could probably do a brisk walk faster than I was ‘running’. I said ‘thank you’ and fought back the urge to inform them that this was my easy pace and I’m training for a martathon and actually I can run fast I’m just running smart right now. Seems like my ego had joined me on my run.
Just before the half marathon, back in June 2019 I went into a running shop for my first pair of real running trainers. I had a gait analysis and the shoe matchmaker paired me with the Brooks Adreline GTS 19. Since then I’ve probably covered over 600km in these bad boys and I’ve been without injury. I snuck into Up and Running in Chester and tried on the newest version. It’s like walking on clouds, that feeling of fresh cushioning. I got back on the treadmill for another analysis and I’m the same, with the same pronation and need for a semi-structured shoe. Unfortantely the end of the story is no new shoes this week...
I’ve not being telling many people about my training, as I’m not sure I’m actually going to be able to complete it. And who likes a load of people knowing they’ve failed! The few trusted people I have, some of whom have taken on the wonderous 26.2 mile distance have all stressed the importance of stretching before and after a run, any length of training run. Lame, boring and ‘who’s got time for that’, I hear you cry. Well, the person who does make time for that stands a better chance of not getting injured for sure. After heeding their warnings, another step I’ve taken this week is to compile a YouTube playlist of short warm ups and cool downs for runners, plus some longer runners’ yoga sessions. I’ve watched tutorials on foam rolling and bought a new foam roller. We have a super knobbly cheap Karrimor one but as I was rolling my quads my yelps caused one of the children from the bedroom to enquire if I was OK. I’m no expert at rolling but thought it was time to improve and start with an ‘easier’ roller.
Laying my kit out the night before has always helped give me a better chance of a morning run. Knickers, hair bobbles and cap included. As I was in two minds about starting the training I was able to meet with a friend who has run many ultras — and I mean crazy distance ultras. After tentatively voicing my ambition, she looked at my printed PDF with concern. The one I’d chosen originally had speed work and lots of millage but no long run over 30km. She recalled her first marathon, when she was coincidentally around the age I am now and suggested a plan akin to what she used ‘back then’. She warned me that I do need to RESPECT the marathon distance (and this is coming from someone who runs 200 miles for fun).
Rather stupidly I had a Terrex trail race booked for September. A 25km trail race for the ‘avid trail runner’ with over 800 meters of elevation. Now, in the instance I failed to respect the altitude and the fells. When I told my learned friend about this, she was straight up. I needed to decide if I’m training for the marathon or running the fell race. The race would come at the apex of my long run training for the marathon and likely take me out for a while. I have no actual experience of fell running. And this race would seriously take it out of my legs meaning I’d potentially miss a whole training week the following week and obviously I’d massively risk injury here also.
It felt like a big decision, but I slept and ran on it and decided that it was the marathon (this time).
Physically this week I’m feeling good. I’ve done some foam rolling and extended yoga sessions and my calves are felling loose (they get super tight). It’s my first long run of the plan on Sunday. Either 2 hours 20 or 19km distance at easy pace. I’m loving easy pace and looking forward to whacking on some long podcasts and maybe even trying some new routes. I am 100% praying against early morning rain though. I’m a bit of a wuss about running in the rain at the moment, but perhaps the training will change that.
