My instinct is that the US system right now "buys in" to the framing of the legal system of how individuals, not parties, serve. It is a fiction, parties matter much more, bu we structure primaries around that same "individual competition" framework. It functions, but with a ton of inefficiencies for no benefit.

Those same instincts lead me more towards primaries where people vote for factions over candidates; and then at conventions those factions can go to the smoke-filled rooms and haggle out A: candidates, and B: party platforms. You would ideally get trades of like "okay we endorse more electable candidate X, in return you gotta bite the bullet and be 5% more left on healthcare reform" kind of stuff.

But given how legally weak parties are I see how that has enforceability issues, not insurmountable but a barrier. Republicans should take note of this, honestly, they ran a ton of weak candidates in 2022 in a party that has greater platform discipline, they were gonna vote for the same shit anyway!

thinking on fashion, it's interesting how everyone around asu was so trendy but still like, cheugy. like, they wore all the brands/pieces, i saw a mom in a ysl sweater, i saw girls in brandy melville (who is basically cheugy but post-ironically so it's not cheugy right) but they were doing it all so sincerely, baggy bright blue denim pants, the silhouettes were right but the attitudes were off, it's almost like these trends really don't have anything in them, and they can be adapted to any environ (like a super conservative hellcity).

Now I’ll be honest, my favorite is the original animated Grinch. Like I love that special so much. I haven’t watched it this year but I feel like that’s because this year part of my brain has decided to be the Grinch itself so whoops. Not like the mean ruin Christmas parts but like the “Christmas kinda stinks” parts.

Let’s Peanuts. I have a Charlie Brown tree, have for the past... idk 5 years now? Usually it sits in my room but I didn’t put it in here this year, nor did I uhhh assemble it. Tells you how ready for the holidays I have been. 

Does any one remember the Good Luck Charlie Christmas movie because I really like that one too. Actually have a bit of a fond memory of my mother and I watching it just the two of us, laughing our asses off, having a good time. 

Fave Books:

Well I’m not really much of a reader anymore. I say anymore because in like 4th grade I was holding that 12th grade level reading shit and it made me really hate reading for the most part because we could only pick from like certain grade levels and I found the majority of books to be boring as shit. One trip to detention also may have helped me despise reading a bit more. So honestly i read like a lot more comic books than I do books. And the only real book I’ve picked up in the past who knows how many years I’ve talked about a lot so today I’m gonna talk about my favorite comic books. 

I’m gonna start on Shade, The Changing Girl/Woman. So Shade was one of the first ones I really picked up. I mostly got it because it was under the DC’s Young Animal imprint and my mind said “Hey if Gerard Way (since he was leader of the uhhh imprint, I guess that’s how to phrase it) thinks this is fucking amazing maybe I will too.” And honestly it was one hell of a trip where I loved every minute of it . There’s a lot of themes of being lost and trying to figure yourself out (I mean that’s my takeaway from it at least) and I connected with that. Also I found it to be really artsy there’s these insane panels that are just gorgeous and take up like 2 whole pages and tell a story alone with everything. And the colors! They’re super vivid and I just got lost in this wondrous world of the series itself. 

Speaking of Gerard & the Young Animal imprint... Doom Patrol. What a beautiful series in both comic and TV show form. Many dynamic characters and a sense of comfort. I remember this one interview, they’re asking Gerard about comics, specifically Doom Patrol, and they ask him about what really brought him to it and I could be remembering this wrong but he said something along the lines of “It was the first comic book I knew of that showed a therapy session, it showed that it was okay to not be okay”. It’s been a while since I’ve either read or heard that interview but like... That kinda stuck with me. And I feel like that can still apply to the comic today. Like it’s a very well driven comic and it does have those moments where it’s like “Hey, we all have problems and that’s okay.” It’s almost reassuring to me. Because you can watch these characters be in their own little problems and they try to work through them the best they can. And that’s important to me. That’s how I feel also currently. I have my own problems, trying to work through them. I think the only complaint I’d ever give you about Doom Patrol would be focused in on issue 8 because fucking cat sex. But like... it’s a weird comic I’m gonna allow it to do that. 

How I learned to make GIFs:

Long story short. I used to use like EZGIF to make GIFs on my own and.. they fucking sucked. So I downloaded Photoshop and was like “Fuck it I’ll learn to make a GIF on my own.” So I started playing around with things and at one point in time I look up a tutorial from a big name GIFmaker on the site and I try following it. And I was like “Well this doesn’t seem to bad” (Also didn’t help that there’s an action line that does the majority of my work for me. I just have to select frames, crop/resize, and maybe fuck around with colors if I want to lol) And then I was like “Hey what if I posted these to tumblr.” Enter my uhhh Ways To Fake It GIFset. That was the first one I did. I cherrypicked some scenes and was like “I think these will look good” Played around with colors a lil (I really don’t do that much anymore I think the last set I played around with colors on was Falling) and I was like “Okay these look great”. Of course I also had to make sure they fit that 3mb limit. (I know it’s like 5 now but I prefer keeping it to 3mb to keep it as uncompressed as possible... with lossy already usually lol, so it’s a lil compressed but not like YouTube video compression fucking you over compression. If that even somehow makes sense.) And yeah then I just kinda started playing around with some more videos and stuff. Like I have some old GIF tests hanging around including some text tests. And then I just started making some ones at random. Like I have a shitton from like random Strokes videos & so. And then I just kinda fell into making sets I was like “fuck it these videos/artists are cool they get sets because it’s my blog and I say so” (Also how I ended up with that whole Saturday series as I call it.) Another thing too was I was discovering these videos and stuff that I didn’t know existed and I was like “Hmm yeah I’ve never seen GIFs of this in my life let me fix it.” (This is how I accidentally because #1 CRX/Nick V. content provider, because turns out there’s a lot of stuff out there) so yeah. That’s that I guess. That really did not answer that question much but longer story way shorter: a tutorial and photoshop experimentation.

10. is your material for editing organised? –> to be honest not really! i tend to download videos from youtube or wherever, so the videos are in downloads, then i import video to timeline from my downloads, and after all that i save gifs/psds/edits to my desktop. i find it easier to post things from my desktop than my downloads, but i have to move stuff back into my folders after i’ve posted? it’s kinda whack. but my editing process is pretty organized! i load the video, select the frames, crop, then i convert to timeline, make my frames a smart object, sharpen via actions, color, (add subtitles if necessary) then make everything into one smart object and convert to animation timeline again (i made an action for this). then i adjust the timing and i save! i even have a set way of dealing with gifs being over 3mb. if it’s like a LOT over 3mb and i feel okay with cutting some frames, i cut some frames. (i use selective and diffusion at 100%, but i find that lowering the percentage to 99% sometimes cuts down the file size! if that doesn’t help i add lossy until it’s like 2.94mb or sth like that!)

14. what’s the worst mental breakdown you’ve had over an edit? –> that’s got me thinking. it might be this gifset of kacey musgraves? i spent literal days working on this as a gift for jordan! i kept tweaking the coloring, trying to make it pinker, and i played with layer masks a lot because i didn’t want her skin color to be affected. or maybe this praying x lwymmd gifset i made after the whole scooter/scott debacle? i started making this at around 1am and i think i finished at 5am. it was kinda difficult for me, actually, because i rarely gif from different places. usually i gif consecutive scenes and that’s easier because you don’t have to search for scenes/moments that fit what you have in mind, and you just have to color the scene once. when i thought of the concept i already knew what i wanted as the first and last gifs, so i only had to work with the coloring (and it worked out pretty well i think!) i also did have an idea for the second gif. but i probably made the third gif, the one with the “and we both know all the truth i could tell” lyric, three or four times with different scenes, each scene had different reasons it couldn’t work out, but i’m glad i finally picked a scene i was okay with (not entirely happy with but a scene i deemed acceptable) and finished the gif, posted and went to sleep!

DnD 5E, musing on the Sorcerer

I’m going to start work on a few new bloodlines for the Sorcerer class in DnD 5E today. I have an NPC I need to create who should be a Sorceress, but none of the existing bloodlines suit what I need for her at all. I’ve got four bloodlines I’m starting work on today. (I’ll post about that separately at some point when done.)

In the process I was looking over Sorcerer things, and I was informed that Sorcerer is apparently the least played class. This got me thinking. Results after the break.

The reason Sorcerer is not often played is actually really straightforward: Bard. Bards are also Cha based, also have spells known that they don't prepare, and fill mostly the same role. Bards are also tied for the most skilled class in the game, have an option to get more skilled or to become reasonable melee threats, inspiration is a game changer, and on top everything else they get WAY MORE SPELLS KNOWN. Their spell list is less blasty, but you really only need two or three good damage spells--One for single target, and two for different AoE or damage types. So as-is, any time you would want a charisma based caster, Bard will always be the better choice mechanically.

I think Bard is in an excellent place, I don't think they need significant nerfs--maybe less spells known if anything. So the problem is Sorcerer. Fixing this would require a full class re-write for Sorcerer. I’m not ready to do that yet, but that’ll be on my list of projects I think. For now, some initial thoughts.

The main thing that makes a Sorcerer a Sorcerer is Metamagic, so that's the first thing to look over. You get Sorcery Points, one per level. You can get more by burning spell slots, or you can get spell slots by burning Sorcery Points. This conversion is REALLY lossy though, so doing this is never a good idea. You might once in a while get a desperation spell slot.

On top of this, at low levels you don't have enough SP to really do much with your Metamagic. At higher levels you have a ton to work with. So I think the first thing I would do is frontload the amount of SP you get, slow the progression a bit so you end up with the same or just slightly more SP than before.

Your actual options for what to do with your Metamagic are... pretty decent I think. I think I might add something that uses Careful Spell as a prereq to fully block damage to allies, but other than that I’m not sure what would change here. Each option has its niche based on what spells you’ve chosen.

So Metamagic isn’t really the problem either. I might make the SP conversion less lossy, but other than that? Seems good to me. So the problem must be elsewhere.

The Sorcerous Origins are all over the place, and so far it seems like this is where WotC is trying to fix the class. We can see the power creep pretty clearly by looking at each bloodline’s capstones, their level 18 features. Here’s what you get from the core ones.

Dragon Presence - an AoE fear or charm that costs 5 SP. Seems cool until you think about it for a second. Charm Person is a FIRST LEVEL SPELL, and you can reasonably get the same AoE and number of targets for a third level spell slot. Those are also very common immunities when you get to that level. Finally, that 5 SP represents ~25% of your daily SP unless you want to burn spell slots for them. I can’t see myself ever actually wanting to use this ability.

Spell Bombardment - if you roll max damage on one die when you cast a spell, you get to roll one more. At 18th level that is negligible even if it happened 100% of the time. The fact that you have to roll the dice right on top is almost insulting.

Compare that to what you get in Xanathar’s.

Unearthly Recovery - once per long rest if you’re less than half health, heal half your max health as a bonus action. When you meet the conditions to use this, YOU REALLY NEED TO USE IT. This is something I’d use regularly in actual combat, every time it’s available. This is an excellent class feature. If only it were on a class that weren’t outdone by Bard, who can ALSO heal.

Umbral Form - 6 SP bonus to get resistance to everything but force and radiant and the ability to phase through objects and creatures. This is strong enough to actually justify that hefty SP cost and I could see myself using it on occasion. So, yeah, getting there. (Yes, I know Bear Totem barbarian gets this much more reliable and much more often at THIRD LEVEL but this is on a spellcaster.)

Wind Soul - passive immunity to lighting and thunder, goddamn. That’d be as strong as the other Xanathar abilities by itself, but you ALSO get a flight speed better than the other bloodlines that give you wings. This feature is ridiculously good.

The other Sorcerous Origin features in XGtE are similarly stronger than what you get in core, so I think one could reasonably conclude that WotC wants to strengthen Sorcerer through bloodlines. Still, while these class features are good they are tacked on to a class that still doesn’t compete with Bard.

There are several things that need to happen. You need better access to SP at low level. You need more spells known--just a few, Bard should still have more. You need good Origin features. I’d say maybe one or two more advance Metamagic abilities, but those are actually pretty okay. And I think of all classes, Sorcerer is bet fit to get more spells per day than the others due to its still limited selection.

I have an idea on how I’d do all this, and it’s on my backburner. I have more pressing matters and this is a bigger project than I can handle right now. For now, all I’d say is: Why should all casters use spell slots? There are other ways to limit spells per day.

since our family (u, dear followers) has grown to 800 people, I began to often get questions about the gifs! i made basic gif tutorial here. today i will tell u how to turn a video into a gif <3

Basic:

1) For creation our gifs we will use Photoshop. 2) For recording your video ypu can use "V" button. Sometimes shit happens and your photoshop can make things like that: ... 

It's okay. Try use "Fraps" or other programs to record videos. I use Fraps and can tell that this program is really useful. 3)  Tumblr has animated GIF size limit - 3 megabytes. I will tell u how to squeeze to needed size later.

Let's go!

1) Record your amazing video

2) File > Import > Video Frames to Layers. Use the trim controls to choose the needed video moment

3) Wait. Wait. Nice! We have.. this. What next? Now you have frames and layers.

Only first layer is visible at the first frame, only second layer is visible at the second frame, and so on.

If u want change something on 5th frame choose 5th layer and 5th frame and add what you want. You can make this frame play longer like that:

You can delete unnecessary frames: (!!!delete frames, not layers!!!)

Edit your gif. Choose the last layer ( edit must be above all layers) and first frame and add editing like you want. Look carefully so that all the frames have the same editing.

4) Change the gif size. I recommend making a height of 400-500 pixels.

5) When your gif is ready, choose File >> Save for web and wait a bit

6) About gif size limit. The size of the gif depends on: length and height, colors number (256,128,64...), dither and lossy % and gif time. Make your gif shorter (60-70 frames), not really colorful (the brighter gif is, the larger its size), reduce percentage content of dither and increase lossy %. Adjust the settings for yourself to eventually get it no more than three megabytes

Make sure that you choose "forever" and save it! Here you go! 

7) Since we made the small size of our gif (400x250 pixels), aloneat post it will be look uncleanly. Much better if it’s paired with another gif:

Marseille mCable Gaming/Gamer vs. Cinema Edition Write up + Pictures

I recently bought both the gaming and cinema editions of the Marseille mCable, their respective pages are here and here. I apologize ahead of time for the image quality, they are PNGs on a registered imgur to avoid lossy compression, but I do not have a dedicated hardware capture device so they were taken with a 6S plus.

Feel free to ask any questions about either and I will do my best to answer them (I do not yet own a 4K panel, so I won't really be able to answer questions involving them).

Note: both cables provide different forms of color processing, these are noticeable in Bloodborne, but the color differences in RDR are largely due to the changing weather, so focus on the color changes in BB.

I chose to use Bloodborne as an example game as anyone who has played it knows how terrible the image quality was due to excessive chromatic aberration and a complete lack of anti-aliasing. All of these will be set at 1080p display resolution since if you set it to 720p the ps4 just supersamples the image as the internal rendering resolution is locked at 1080p regardless of output resolution.

Clearly, there is a lot of aliasing on everything and the CA gets worse the farther things are from the center of the screen

We can see really good anti aliasing, but there is a noticeable texture blurring which gives them a kind of oil-paint look. Also notice that the chromatic aberration has been substantially reduced, giving a much cleaner and clearer image

Oddly enough, the cinema edition which is supposed to be aimed at TV and films has anti-aliasing, though not as strong or as good at edge catching as the gaming edition. CA is slightly reduced. The cinema edition has a particularly strong sharpening filter and does not have the oil-paint effect the gaming edition has. It introduced noticeable halos due to the sharpening, but I am honestly starting to prefer this version. Testing in 60fps games like Nioh it has no problem handling 60fps content.

Finally, this is what you get if you combine the gaming edition plus the extra sharpening and image processing of the cinema edition: Imgur

Honestly I do not know what to make of this one yet, it seems like overkill and doesn't really give much return for the $240+ you would spend on the cables (they are both $120).

Here are some scaling results with RDR which uses 2xmsaa and a 1280x720 rendering resolution. I set the X1S at 720p output resolution to avoid using the built in scaler by the console.

First is the base game being upscaled to 1080p using the better than average scaler in my BenQ XL2430T. Imgur

Even with the 2xMSAA the game uses it just looks awful, the game looks quite good being scaled 1:1 though, so a lot of clarity is being lost trying to play at 1080p sadly

The scaler in the X1S gives a slightly sharper image than the XL2430T, but it still looks pretty bad, not much else to say here.

Obviously a lot better than either the built in scaler or the one you are going to get in a monitor, with additional anti-aliasing on top of that. Honestly, the game looks pretty decent but as you can see the results are pretty blurry. Using a TV you may be able to counteract this by using additional sharpening.

Very similar results to the gaming edition, but a bit sharper due to the additional sharpening the cinema edition provides. The anti-aliasing isn't quite as good, but if you are only interested in upscaling last-gen titles, this may be the better option you are not a fan of the oil-paint effect the gaming edition introduces.

Finally, this is what happens if you use the gaming edition for upscaling then the cinema edition to sharpen and clean up that 1080p signal coming out of it: Imgur

Obviously the sharpest results here, but there can be subtle visual artifacts here and there on small details due to the doubling up of image processing.

Ultimately, it is kind of mixed bag--neither is perfect but they both give much better results than without. Buying decision should depend on what you would rather have: excellent anti-aliasing plus blur or okay anti-aliasing without. I have tested how the cables work with different forms of AA and can confirm they have no problem being used on top of FXAA, which a lot of games use (it actually cleans up the missed edges and sub-pixel artifacts caused by this form), temporal AA which is becoming increasingly popular, MSAA which is sometimes used by older games as post-process methods didn't exist yet, and neither have any problem being used with games that have dynamic rendering resolutions, such as Nioh which can drop to below 720P on action mode on a base PS4. I didn't see any issues being used on games which have film grain either, such as The Order 1886.

Based on my reading, I have made some notes. I'm new to this, so I'd appreciate if I can have community members' comments / discussion on the same. In particular, I'd love to know if I got something wrong or if someone is aware of a significant result that I missed.Here are my notes:1/ First major insight was that the minibatch of data for gradient descent actually helps in generalization on unseen data. Gradients of minibatch of data that are specific about that batch cancel over multiple runs and what remains is gradients that are generally applicable.2/ It is known that neural networks are universal function approximators. That is, given a function they can approximate that function with arbitrary accuracy. But now I think that's not an interesting result (of approximating a function). Even a database can do that. What's interesting is that they give good answers on unseen data.3/ It is a mystery how that happens but probably the answer lies in not as much about neural networks but the types of datasets we have in the natural world and what problems we use neural networks for.4/ Natural world is full of information, one 1000x1000 px photo has 1 million bits but when we see it, we either see it as a cat or a dog. Effectively, we "throw out" a lot of information to do whatever we want to do. To classify a photo, our brain convert a log(1 million) bits into log(1) bit and the task of a neural network is to find the mapping that "forgets" or "throws" all the information irrelevant to the task while only retaining info that's useful to us.5/ Since this log(1 million) to log(1) is a many-to-one function, neural networks might be a really good model for approximating these functions. Different layers might be throwing away irrelevant information while keeping only the relevant info.6/ This is suggested by two papers/videos I saw today. One was on information bottleneck: http://bit.ly/2SxHsXR The other one is how errors introduced in early layers tend to vanish in higher layers: http://bit.ly/2AqUyPX In effect, neural networks are lossy compression algorithms that compress inputs as much as they can while retaining as much info as possible about the task at hand (classification, prediction) This helps networks generalize as data-specific noise gets ignored in deep networks.9/ Okay, so we know what deep networks *might* be doing but the question is how training via gradient descent is able to find the right set of parameters that do this compression. Given the millions of weights and biases, it seems the problem is of finding the needle in the haystack.10/ I honestly don't know and research community also (probably) doesn't know. But there are hints. One is related to the earlier suggestion of many-to-one mapping of input to output in real-world tasks. This means that there may be more than 1 set of parameters that do the job equally well11/ So stochastic gradient descent might not be finding the "perfect" set of parameters but it may not matter. The problem we want to solve through neural networks may get solved by many sets of params and SGD may find one of them.12/ In fact, empirically the landscape of loss function for neural networks on "natural" problems (of image classification, etc.) seems to have a "flat" minima.​Image via: http://bit.ly/2SxHtLp So the same function we're seeking might be parameterized by many parameters. Do you agree?15/ Perhaps, just perhaps, different layers (depth) helps SGD reduce loss in steps by focusing on few dimensions at once v/s if it is just one very wide layer, SGD has too many dimensions to seek at once. But I don't really know.16/ What's fascinating to me is the how easily researchers drop neural networks as function approximators anywhere and everywhere.
