george lucas handed an overwritten mess in and then the fandom + otherwise involved creators in the extended universe and other supplemental media have spent the last decades ritualistically dissecting it and reworking it’s constituent parts into some of the most fascinating worldbuilding you can get. and the average person has no knowledge of this and just watched disney completely fumble it within an hour and a half of their first title crawl in The Force Awakens and proceed to completely fall apart within the next 3 hours . and that’s just what star wars is to them

i have to rewatch a new hope again it’s so funny how awkward everyone is around vader. he’s just this unbelievably powerful wildcard hanging around in their war rooms without a formal position in the military hierarchy. no one knows what his deal is. there was no interdepartmental memo about how to interact with the emperor’s favorite attack dog. he just shows up and kills off some of the middle management and then fucks off. they hadn’t quite figured out how to frame him imposingly while also having everyone else in shots yet so he’s just standing there like🧍‍♂️all the time. he’s just a guy. in all the later movies they’ve doubled down on him being Super Intimidating and In Charge but in Star Wars (1977) he’s just here. dude just showed up. it’s hilarious

i need more people to go in to star wars completely blind starting with star wars/ep 4 a new hope bc you need to be fully immersed in original flavor old man obi wan “ben” kenobi, the driest (from living in self imposed exile on a desert planet for two decades) wet cat of a character, in order to properly appreciate the utter force of nature and personality that he is in every other star wars media . he was a scrunkly old man FIRST

we can solidly blame the prequel star wars movies for establishing the production pipeline that made the MCU possible though

recipe to make you like star wars (aka top watch reccs in no particular order)
watch OG Star Wars (1977) (/Episode 4/A New Hope Despecialized edition/suitably similar re-edit restoring the original version of the film)
watch the episode of The Muppet Show featuring Mark Hamill/Luke Skywalker
watch The Hidden Fortress (1958) (the iconic samurai movie that it’s HEAVILY based on)
watch the original ridefilm on the Star Tours flight simulator in Disneyland (utterly gorgeous display of practical effect knowledge that the team described as “more difficult than all three movies combined” due to the much wider screen to accommodate the movement and impeccable timing to said flight simulator movements. also almost entirely one take)
watch the animated 2003 clone wars shorts (it’s so cool . so so cool. jedi should only exist in glorious 2D animation)
watch star wars visions (anthology series set in the SW universe from different animation studios, with s2 specifically focusing on different culture’s takes on the setting and character tropes)
watch the rest i guess (specifically in 4->5->6 then 1->2->3 then 7 order. take or leave 8 and 9. i’m firmly an in-chronological-release-order girlie)
