Figure Drawing (both classes) 2/21 &22 - 2/28,3/1/23
Good afternoon students, this is the assignment for the next two  weeks. It is a long post with two parts and it includes a HW assignment to be completed over the course of these two weeks.
You will note your progress accordingly on your portfolio (Tumblr) as follows:
1/4 post what you are able to complete for today.
2/4 Work completed on each day of class.
3/4  work completed each day of class.
PART A
Starting today students will be working to find and correct human landmarks.
I have added several very good videos that talk about this.  I found they explain best those important spots that help us develop the human form.
You will also watch a third  video that explains Proportions on the body.
Watch the videos as many times as you can and take notes in your sketchbook as you will use that knowledge for the all drawings done for this assignment.
After you do several warm ups with gesture and contour , this week you will spend time working and learning how to find and recognize important landmarks.
You will use the technique know as sighting.
Knowing where landmarks of the body are found, will help you  to use triangulation to position the angles of the body.
In doing so you will learn to have correct measurements in your drawings.
When we are looking at the body we are trying to find those relations from one point to the next.
You will use a pencil to show you those angles.

Session One
10 minutes
Practice finding those lines then add the shoulder and Pelvis line.
Work with over 15 different poses, same paper.
Session TWO
10 minutes
More gesture drawings but now we try to fill in quickly the figure with head.
Session Three
20 minutes draw 4 poses
5 mins each
One pose per paper
Contour drawing
Starting at the head-
Do not lift the pencil from the pad until you have drawn the whole figure.
Go slowly.
For the third & fourth Contour pose
DRAW TWO BLIND CONTOUR DRAWINGS.
That means that your eyes stay on the model and you do not look at your paper.
Work large.
Session Four -
Landmarks ( this will be done starting today and through next week)
Last part of this:
Work with TWO different poses to learn and apply your knowledge and awareness of landmarks.
You are trying to draw the form accurately, eliminate any angle lines or marks not necessary to depicting the figure when the pose is completed.
One pose per page.
Use the paper in a vertical format for standing poses. Vertical for poses laying down.
Use the entire paper.
This means the figure should fit on the paper top to botton, left to right if laying.
Homework - (starting this week )
NOTE: You should be spending minimun 2 hours on HW assignments per class.
You can work on HW through the weekend.

Draw the figure as seen above and below. You will note the skeletal landmarks inside the body as seen in these two diagrams.
You can try to work in shading as seen in both art plates.

PART B
When we are  working with figure we want to understand the relation of body parts to each other.
How big should the head be in relation to the body.
How do you know if these proportions are correct.
Session One:
You will begin your class assignment by watching the videos posted of human proportions .
You will take drawing notes as you watch it.
Try to follow what the speaker is demonstrating by drawing it in your sketch book.
You will then look at the human figure videos and find poses to work these concepts.
You can work with the you tube video given to you on the link.
Remember you can stop the video to give yourself more time in any of the poses and in the long pose .
Session Two:
10 mins
Practice rendering the placement of the head .
First tip -
Head is an upside egg.
Watch the time lapse video to see how I do it. The top of the head is wider the bottom. Top holds the brain (wide) Bottom the shin (narrow)
Always notice where the SHIN is in relation to the NECK specially when doing the contour and the  LONG pose.

Session Three-a :
Drawing figure beginning exercises  (10 minutes )
Warm up by doing quick gesture sketches. Use the news print pad.
In Quick gestures we try to define the pose in ONE quick line.
This line is where the weight of the figure is held.
Same thing you do everytime we start class,  warming up to loosen up.
Look from the NECK to the SPINE Or down to the FOOT if the figure is standing .
Which leg keeps the figure stable from falling or collapsing in standing poses ?
When the figure is sitting or laying down , notice the SPINE first then arm or body part that holds the figure.
That would be the gestural line .
Remember what I said  about the spine.
The spine is not a straight line.
Think of it more like a snake or loose S .
For the first ten minutes practice finding those lines then add the shoulder and Pelvis line.
Session THREE b – 10 minutes
More gesture drawings but now we try to fill in quickly the figure with head included.
Session Four – 10 minutes
2 poses  Contour
          ( one  blind contour and one contour )
Make sure you have One pose per paper
Contour drawing Starting at the head do not lift the pencil from the pad until you have drawn the whole figure. Go slowly.
That means that your eyes stay on the model and you do not look at your paper. Work large. This will look kind of funny but it’s ok!
Session Five - Proportions
Last part of the class
NOTE: the body is from 7.5 to 8 heads long . Below I have created a structure for 8 heads long.
For this part of the assignment you will follow what you learned in the video in regards to head to body part relations.
Draw Three poses depicting your understanding of this concept.
Start with a vertical line in the middle of the paper, the medial line, that is the center of gravity.
Make a line at the top and on the bottom.
Follow concept of video.
Once the figure has been drawn the lines seen below will be erased.

Then divide that measure in half.

Now with that knowledge in mind find two poses where figure is vertical and implement that proportion guidelines as you draw the figure.
Make sure all work is posted to your portfolio daily for both in class and HW assignments. 
We will use the next two weeks to work with these techniques.
