happy to confirm for the oshi no homies that 137 has made me insane to levels only previously matched by 131 and has possibly exceeded them. on the plus side, this is resulting in what i think is my best chapter review thus far. on the less good side i am 1600 words done and not even halfway through the chapter. i am ill, gamers.

so I heard about the oshi no ko leaks and ngl the reaction to them and everything surrounding them is very funny to me. mostly because im like 99% sure it isnt gonna end up being all that bad or controversial. people craving chaos, I salute you but given the trajectory of the characters and story I can see this going one of two ways.

first off the leaked line is out of context and ruby is expressing embarrassment that was a thing because of their situation now. or what's more likely, regardless of what ruby’s going to ask, do you really think aqua “I am going to push everyone away from me so they wont get hurt in my murder plot especially in a romantic sense” would ever reciprocate? not to mention that back then Goro clearly said it in a “appeasing this sick little girl” kind of way. I really don’t think there’s any universe that has consistent writing where aqua is down for whatever this is. thats not even getting into how ruby’s still clearly in a bad place and if that line is what it appears to be its worth considering that she’s feeling upset and isolated and just found out one of the only positive figures in her prior life has been with her this whole time. its something said after a really emotional revelation and I feel like girl will figure herself out in time.

what I feel like might happen is aqua could flat out reject this and confirm he wasnt really being serious when he said it because you know. he was an adult and it would be super worrying if he was. and it might hurt her further continuing with that theme of “lies”. maybe she grudgingly accepts it because she’s come to better understand why people lie. or it still drives them apart for a little and the conflict continues until ruby has a moment of maturity and begins to realize that in hindsight it was really unrealistic to think she’d marry this grown ass man someday esp considering their situation now.

I also think a lot of people are taking their dialogue from 122 at face value of “I dont think of you as my sibling” clearly ruby is lashing out in anger because she feels aqua has disrespected Ai’s memory and feels he’s been a bad brother to her. meanwhile aqua is trying to speak to her at her level, acknowledging that they were different people before, but this guy lies about his own feelings all the time and the wording of “we’re strangers” does really sound like trying to distance himself from the relationship and complicated emotions.

Or you know. the leaks could be fake alskjkajljaksf. prolly not I find a lot of manga leaks to be true but I also havent seen any actual panels, just people spreading dialogue so hm. either way I dont think its gonna be that bad but the chaos is mildly funny still.

Anon, I get the feeling there's been a misunderstanding here. When I said "most obvious", I didn't mean "best written and best for the story". I just meant "most predictable" lol

You bring up some really nice observations anon! In particular, I really like what you pointed out, that during the Baseball Catch date and the Brazilian BBQ date Aqua's feelings for Akane were discussed! It also makes for a nice show of their progression, because during the first one he dismisses his feelings for Akane while in the second he has come to develop enough feelings for her that he is considering falling for her altogether.

You're right that people do tend to interpret anything and everything Aqua does towards Kana as romantic. I think it's because it's what people have come to expect when it comes to dynamics with their tropes (light to the darkness, etc.), but I'm with you on the fact that they could easily be platonic.

I also agree with you on Aqua and Akane having a better developed relationship!

Ohhh I hadn't thought about that, you're right that Sarina idolized Ai in a similar way to baby!Akane's idolization of baby!Kana. I'm not sure I see other parallels between them though and here between us, I'm not very inclined to look for any because I think that the fact that Akane doesn't remind Aqua of Sarina or Ai or anyone else is a great thing. The less he projects on her, the better!

You know which parallels I did notice, though? Goro's presence brought Sarina salvation much in the same way Akane's did for Aqua. The wording used is the same in both, too! I'm keeping that thought in mind to follow it during a rainy day 😂

Exactly!! During my first read, I had pretty much no expectations for Aka's writing so I didn't really care about getting to the bottom of Aqua's psyche, I just found him boring. It was through rereading his scenes with Akane that I realized that the explanations the fandom kept feeding me didn't add-up, so I started thinking about Aqua's character more seriously and I liked what I found. Now here I am lol

I completely agree with you anon! I acknowledge that Aka is free to do whatever he wants with the manga and that sometimes, the better ship loses. Regardless, I still hope that he will deliver on the development he has given Aqua and Akane and grant us a satisfying ending, because it is the most developed Aqua ship and I'd love for something to come out of it. I'm glad you now think it's possible!

This is a high risk movie, even in the process of production. Like, how many chances are people gonna leak the movie and get it cancelled, sued, or worse? How many chances are the casts and the crew gonna get death threats or meet the same fate as Ai? I hope the team hire a damn good security system.

Aqua be trying to jinx Kamiki real hard, huh. He's gonna bring up aalll his victims, not just Ai, but also Goro (his past self) and Himekawa Airi.

Now that the stars have alligned, let's break them down 1 by 1.

Ruby as Ai, Aqua as Kamiki: Oh man, Ruby gonna love to have an extra lovey dovey time with Aqua/Sensei isn't she. It's gonna be hella awkward for Aqua tho. It's gonna be hella controversial if media finds out this film is lowkey incest. And Aqua is gonna get the biggest backlash, for sure. (for the lowkey incest, for acting as a gross human being/Kamiki, for tarnishing people's name, the list goes on). I wonder how Ruby's gonna handle this.

Tsukuyomi as Ruby-Aqua: I'm sure she'd do great as Aqua, but as the cheerful energetic Ruby... uhhh. Good luck miss 🤣

Frill as Himekawa Airi: oh no. Another Kamiki's lover/victim. Is Ruby and Frill's friendship gonna be tested on this one?

Memcho as Mei-Mei, Kana as Nino, Akane as Takamine: I think (I hope) this film doesn't really affect Memcho's reputation badly because apparently Mei-Mei is a newcomer at the time; I hope she's innocent. On the other hand, Nino and Takamine are B Komachi's founding members alongside Ai. The sisterhood/rivalry is gonna be real heavy. And between Nino-Takamine, someone has to be related with Kamiki somehow. Which means, more Kana-Akane rivalry. The role suits them so much lolol. Akane might use this role to stop Aqua's plan tho, I wonder how that's gonna play out; I'm in dread but also excited.

Melt as Goro: oh man, good luck bro. Ruby's gonna be like: "Ugghh he's so bad to be Sensei, I miss my Sensei, Senseeiii." Also excited to see Melt getting many pointers from Aqua. Melt gonna be like "Wow u know so much abt this character, is he your uncle or smth lolol"

Jan Tomato as Miyako: huh. I think she's a new character in ONK? She's prob picked because her face resembles Miyako, not bc of her acting skill. Someone as amature as her, handling a handful, mature baby like Tsukuyomi (who is also an amature) is... well... good luck miss.

Tomo Ayabe as Ryosuke: Ooohhh Goro & Ai's killer. I forgot, did he also appear in Tokyo Blade or Sweet Again, or is he a new character too? Excited to see him interact with Melt.

Mita Norio as Ichigo: Bro. That character gap broo. And his acting skills?? Looking forward to itt 🤣

Taiki as Uehara Suijuro: holy moly I can't believe he agreed to act as his "dad." How did he find out about his parents' affair tho, did Aqua told him beforehand? Or did he just learn it from the script recently? I hope it's the former (and I hope Aqua already did it in one of the chapters I forgot to read). No comment on his future interaction with Frill tho, I'm sure they'd do great.

To defend ONK, and even if I'll wait for chapter 124 to release, I need to point out: just because Ruby is being different with Aqua it doesn't mean it's going to that direction. Yes, she's all affectionate and lovey-dovey with him. Yes, she even made a reference on Gorou's promise to marry her. BUT. Ruby's most favorite person in the world she believed was gone forever, is by her side, supports her, and frees her from everything that has been making her suffer. How would she NOT be affectionate and loving with him? If it was Aqua and Ruby before the reveal, or Sarina and Gorou, everyone would be like: what a cute family, they get along well.

Just because Ruby is affectionate with the only person in the world that ever showed her love and whose death ruined her, it doesn't mean her affection is romantic. What she had said was true, after all: Aqua wasn't her family. He was someone who she happened to be born with. Gorou is her family though. So I understand the change in behavior. Also, I'm still doubting if judging by how damaged Sarina/Ruby is, if she has the mental age to understand romance.

OnK Chapter 149

I know it doesn’t mean much coming from me because I’m always complaining about Aka’s writing, but…

And I mean it when I say that I expect nothing 😭 This was literally my first ever OnK-related reblog and its tags are more relevant than ever lmao

#honestly I didn’t think too hard about any of this during my first read #because the romantic endgame seems so obvious that it kind of discourages guessing lmao #but re-reading these chapters has made me appreciate Aqua’s side of his bond with Akane a lot more

Back when I first got into OnK, I mentioned that Akane was the entire reason I kept reading the manga. I didn’t care about the romantic subplot, found Aqua/Kana extremely obvious and predictable, and Aqua plain boring.

It’s only during my second read that I paid close attention to Akane’s interactions with Aqua and I ended up playing myself into both, caring about Aqua and shipping him with Akane lol

This chapter has made me realize that despite everything, I'm not emotionally invested in whether they end up together or not. I’d prefer it, obviously, because Aqua truly is at his most interesting whenever he’s around Akane, and their dynamic has the best development in the manga (so far).

But it’s just like I said before: If they don’t end up together, that’s just Aka’s loss, not mine. I’m just here for Akane 😂

And as an Akane fan, I feel like the best thing for me to do right now is to just take a step back and watch things unfold, because Aka will do whatever he wants regardless of how any of us interpret his manga lol

So instead of posting the long post I originally wrote about this chapter when the leaks came out, I'll just share a a clown gif because in hindsight it was silly of me to expect Kana out of all people to have any sort of meaningful insight into Aqua 🤡

And a couple of things that caught my eye because I can't help myself:

Kana didn't even see Aqua and Akane have any sort of meaningful moment, just those two standing in each other's vicinity was enough to make her throw herself a pity party. How many more times is she going to pity herself and give up? How has Aka not tired of writing her this way? Where did her development from the Scandal arc go? 🤡

So Chapter 147 featured Kamiki thinking Ai doesn't love him and Kana thinking Aqua likes her. It even had a helpful "Cut 139: Misunderstanding" panel and everything. Will this mean something? Who knows!

Kana used guilt-trip! It was super effective!

Oh the irony! Poor Akane looks like she's been hard at work convincing herself that she's over Aqua. And you know what? I cheer for her and respect her energy 100%. I'd rather see her doing her mightiest to help him without any ulterior motives than to have her crying for him and hoping to get back with him every other chapter lol

Akane calling Kana out for her pity-party and for being cowardly was so cathartic that if I didn't already stan her, I'd have become a fan right now 😭 It also means that Aka is 100% aware of the way he writes Kana, so when will she finally be allowed to grow?

Kana's praise to Akane made me so sad though because yes, Akane is pretty and she's talented and she's kind. That's sweet of her to say. But that's not what made Akane someone special to Aqua: it was the way she understood him. The worst part is that Kana ends her praise by saying that Akane is a "goody-two-shoes" but... that's the opposite of how Akane views herself. She sees herself as someone who's not decent and not normal. So it's no wonder that while she gets flustered (it's her dear kana-chan praising her), she seems to get a bit sad/frustrated afterward. After all, for Akane it's probably the opposite. Men would prefer a decent, normal, bright girl like Kana - Aqua included.

I wish someone would tell Akane that she is too ignorant of her own charms and that she doesn't have to act like an adult all the time. Truly the pot calling the kettle black! Sadly, unlike Kana, Akane seems to have no one in her corner in this manga. Aqua was the only one there and the poor guy is barely even a character anymore lol

Overprotective mother or controlling ex-girlfriend? Take your pick!

The English translation left something pretty important out in these panels. Akane doesn't just say "if you have a girlfriend", she says "if you have a precious/important girlfriend". This distinction is very important because it goes to show that... as expected, Akane doesn't think she was an important girlfriend to Aqua. It's like she didn't count and Kana would be the real deal. Oh, Akane...

Which takes me to her very silly, very convoluted yet very predictable plan (in true Aka fashion).

When Akane thinks “I know exactly what you hate”, I imagine she means that Aqua hates hurting and endangering those he cares for. So I'm guessing Akane thinks that if she plays matchmaker and quite literally throws Kana at him, someone he has a soft spot, then Aqua won't be able to go through with his revenge because that would mean breaking Kana's very fragile heart.

In other words, it looks like Akane is going to try and use Aqua's guilt-complex against him and her weapon of choice is love. But not her love, obviously, because as far as she's concerned, her romantic love already failed to save him.

Granted, using Kana's romantic feelings to her advantage is kind of... well, wrong. To quote Akane herself, [Kana] is neither her pet nor her property, but a person. But I'm guessing that Akane may be falling victim to the same loophole she got caught in in Chapters 96 - 98. She thinks she knows what's best, so she's putting her own beliefs aside for the time being.

Kind of like Aqua, actually.

And, ironically, it's Aqua himself who first realized how easy Kana is to use.

So! All in all, I'm here for Mastermind!Akane but I hope that Aka will actually make it worth our while. Will Kana realize that she's about to be used as a chess piece in this Proxy War? Who knows, characters in this manga seem to walk in circles, only being allowed to grow when it fits the plot 😂

Last week we wondered whether Aka would subvert expectations or go the predictable route, and down the predictable route he went. His way of making it less predictable is by including a twist in the form of Akane's ulterior motives, but will this be enough to allow this ol' used trope to lead us someplace new? I guess we'll have to keep reading to find out, but given the quality of the writing lately, I'm not expecting much lol

Onk 123

Alright, I dodged the leaks all the way to the official release. I don’t usually do this, but I wanted to give my thoughts on this.

This looks to me very clearly like it is going to explore the relationship between Ruby and Aqua from Ruby's perspective. She just said she didn't view them as siblings in a fit of rage, but given how stingy Aka Akasaka has been with interaction between the two, especially lately, we haven’t really gotten the chance to address their relationship in the first place. Aqua already had his moment to address his complicated feelings for Ai, but Ruby never got to do so yet for Gorou.

Much like a few chapters ago with Sarina's mother, I get the impression that there is a very intentional choice to initially frame it this way for later inversion, be it by Aqua's rejection, or just Ruby working it out on her own or some other third thing. Oshi no ko's main structure is about setting expectations and then subverting them, so its a bit funny to me that it seems like people are already jumping to conclusions yet again.

The main theme of Oshi no Ko from my perspective is the complicated and messy relationships between people, with the relationships of creators and fans and family relationships being the two most important (Oshi no Ko is not a romance first and foremost and it could never be one), I think this chapter is just another step in exploring that topic ultimately no different from any other, but because of the surge in popularity for the series as well as the influx of both joking and legitimate shipping of these characters, it's getting blown out of proportion.
