The coronavirus pandemic has forced a large chunk of people to work from home. Due to that, there has been a huge spike in data usage across the country. The job opportunities for Data Scientists, Business Analysts and ML/AI Engineers were already increasing steadily. Now, with the surge in data usage, we can expect this demand to go even higher.
The backbone of all IT infrastructure is Cloud. A lot of top companies were already migrating to cloud but with the coronavirus pandemic, it is likely to accelerate the migration. So, you can expect to see a greater demand for cloud architects, cloud engineers and cloud IT admins.
With almost all organisations working remotely, companies’ data is at a high risk of cyber theft. Employees are relying more on personal or less secure wi-fi networks which has increased the threat levels. That is the reason why cybersecurity has become a crucial part of the new corporate system. The demand for security architects, cybersecurity specialists and ethical hackers has and will continue to increase over time.
As more and more people stay at home and consume information online, digital marketing is booming. Companies seek to decrease market spending, drive a better ROI, build an online presence and follow targeted audience online. This will result in increased demand for PPC practitioners, brand managers, content writers, SEO experts, social media manager and email marketing specialists.
Thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, digital channels will become increasingly mainstream across sectors like retail, education, healthcare, IT and others. As the demand for digital increases, it will result in greater demand for Data Engineers, Data Analysts, Data Scientists and Business Analysts.
The growth of digital and tech jobs will accelerate and getting skilled in these digital skills is one of the best ways to ensure that your career is on the right track and will continue to grow.
Digitalised Workplace
The future of the workplace will be all about dismantling antiquated structures and promoting a more open, diverse, efficient and safe place for both companies and employees. There will be the emergence of flat structured companies with no managers, instead, organisations will operate in self-organised, client-facing project teams.
The reduction in corporate politics and flattened hierarchy will increase the efficiency of employees and will promote a culture that is close-knit and supportive of one another. This flexible approach will help individuals to swiftly adapt to the changing digital workplace.
Moreover, tools like augmented reality, machine learning, video and voice-based user interfaces will become mainstream. Innovations in technology will become an important part of the digital landscape. It is critical that all the employees start thinking about how their roles might change because they will. That is why flexibility and adaptability is a prized asset for positive and motivated office culture.
Conclusion
These are just a handful of COVID-19 driven transformation from the corporate perspective that will impact the future of work. However, we are in a period of unprecedented change and these transformations aren’t set in stone.
It is still unclear when this global pandemic will come to an end but what is certain is that our work life will never be the same. Companies will become more resilient to improve business continuity and agility, while employees will have to more flexibility over their schedules as they work remotely.
Moreover, the investment will shift to newer technologies that will make remote working more effective and productive. The focus on data mining and security will also increase, making it essential for companies to invest in technologies and ensure that their information is secure.
To weather this global pandemic and threats to the future of job search, you will have to build up your skillsets, especially your interpersonal skills. To make your job search work in the post-pandemic world, you will need to be capable of adapting to changes. And, as history says, “This, too, shall pass”.

A Year Full of ‘No Way!?’ Moments for CCO Magazine
2017 will go down as the year contributors to the magazine repeatedly blew my mind.
Most editors like to think they have at least a modest (if not better) grasp of the industry they cover. After all, to be a good editor you must be able to tease out the ideas that will educate or delight your readers most – and identifying those requires a baseline of subject matter expertise.
This year was different. At least a half dozen CCO articles in 2017 inspired an exclamation I can only describe as “No sh*t?!,” but for the purposes of this article, I’ll refer to as “No way?!”
Read on to learn about all the amazing contributors and ideas of the past year that blew my mind or delighted me.
Virtual reality and a sit-down with author of The Martian (February 2017)
We started the year interviewing virtual-reality expert Sarah Hill, CEO and chief storyteller for StoryUP, the article titled Immersive Content. No longer the domain of ultra-early adopters and video gamers, virtual reality and augmented reality took off in 2017 … and Sarah was the perfect guide, helping us understand the possibilities and limitations of VR and AR. She also offered case studies from brands using VR, a welcome moment for those of us unable to visualize applications for VR outside of the gaming and consumer entertainment realm.

Also in February, I was delighted to interview Andy Weir, author of The Martian. We talked in Las Vegas just before his touching keynote talk at the ICC conference. Andy spoke poignantly about the deep challenges of being a full-time creative, and the lessons marketers may learn from his own journey. Among other nuggets of wisdom, he explained that marketers focus too much on the sale and, in doing so, lose sight of the power of a well-told story.

He explained, “Audiences are extremely aware of preachiness, especially in the modern era. Hollywood has decided that everything has to have some freaking political message, which drives me crazy. The Martian, by the way, had no political message. Dude didn’t want to die … that’s it. People quickly, even if they don’t do it consciously, identify the message, get mildly annoyed at it, and then start ignoring the parts of the movie that push that. That’s why I try to avoid it. Instead, find the interesting part of your story and then work towards the message, rather than desperately starting with the message and trying to work towards the interesting part.”

Paul’s plain-English tour of the categories of AI in marketing, and possible on-ramps for timid marketers to consider, was one of my key “no way?!” moments of 2017. If it’s a topic that interests you, I also recommend watching his session from Content Marketing Word (Machine-Assisted Narrative: How to Transform and Scale Your B2B Content With Artificial Intelligence), which is available on demand. Paul did a fantastic job explaining AI in terms even non-technophiles can understand. He also gave us a tour of the most promising technologies in the field, and how marketers are using each.
Also in April, we heard from Sara Noble, a Boston-based search consultant who helps iconic brands hire elite content marketing executives (Are You Ready to Hire Quality?). She said among her first tasks when she speaks to a potential hiring company is to figure out if they are serious about content – and thus worth consideration by top-flight talent. If you’re ready to a hire a high-value content marketing leader, look through her list of questions to ensure that your team and company are truly in a position to benefit from a big investment in top talent.

How data influences story (June 2017)
Some people have been amazing resources to the magazine over the years – people who keep coming back with great ideas, stories, and people. (Cameron Conaway, Andy Vale, and Kirk Cheyfitz … I’m looking at you.)
In that spirit, Andy brought us a “no way?!” story (Data-Driven Creative). Andy interviewed Fred Graver, a four-time Emmy-winning television producer and former head of Twitter TV, who uses social data to influence his screenwriting. Yes, it sounds kind of dystopian, but using analytics to influence creative is an interesting premise and process. And it’s an idea that is here to stay, given our inevitable future of AI-enhanced human creativity.

Also fun to read in the June issue – the interview with Jennifer Watson from The Weather Channel (How The Weather Channel Does Social Media). Most social media managers are hyper-aware of publishing accurate, appropriate social content online, but in Jennifer’s work accuracy can be a life-or-death situation. For a weather nerd like myself, it was a dream come true to speak to Jennifer and peer into her daily life.

Inspiration from the content maven at GE (August 2017)
GE’s social media personality has long been a favorite of mine. And my all-time favorite campaign from GE: its play on the Hey Girl meme for Valentine’s Day, but instead of Ryan Gosling, Thomas Edison is the flirt.
The company makes it look easy, but bringing that voice and personality to a brand as big and iconic as GE is a huge challenge (How GE Gives Recruiting Content a Personality Lift). Chief Marketing Officer Linda Boff said the key is in knowing what human values the brand stands for. She explained, “Our DNA is innovation, technology, research and manufacturing. It’s something we have all fallen in love with at GE. That’s our guiding light. We never try to pretend something we’re not.”
A lot of companies could name the same values as GE does, but what makes GE’s execution of those values special is the way it transforms them into a human personality. Boff said, “We often talk about showing up as a person would versus how a corporation would. How do you do that? With humor. A wink. A twist.”

Also in August, an article from one of my favorite CCO contributors, Kirk Cheyfitz (How Advertising is Killing the WWW). Kirk has long railed against the overreaches of advertising and how poor behavior by advertisers will ruin online marketing for the rest of us. Kirk is such an elegant writer that the article is worth reading if only to see how a masterful creative unpacks a complex topic. Also keep an eye out for his Guide to Digital Decency and Success in the same piece.

Finally, in November we published one of my all-time favorite articles of all time. (That sentence just triggered our blog editor.) (Note from editor: Yes, the sentence made me clutch my pearls, but I kept it just this once for writer authenticity.)
Britney Muller from Moz explained the “no way?!” effect of voice assistants on SEO. Of course, I heard rumblings of how voice search would transform SEO, but Britney patiently explained it in a way that all marketers could understand. It’s possibly my favorite article of the year simply because of how much I learned.

A Year Full of ‘No Way!?’ Moments for CCO Magazine
2017 will go down as the year contributors to the magazine repeatedly blew my mind.
Most editors like to think they have at least a modest (if not better) grasp of the industry they cover. After all, to be a good editor you must be able to tease out the ideas that will educate or delight your readers most – and identifying those requires a baseline of subject matter expertise.
This year was different. At least a half dozen CCO articles in 2017 inspired an exclamation I can only describe as “No sh*t?!,” but for the purposes of this article, I’ll refer to as “No way?!”
Read on to learn about all the amazing contributors and ideas of the past year that blew my mind or delighted me.
Virtual reality and a sit-down with author of The Martian (February 2017)
We started the year interviewing virtual-reality expert Sarah Hill, CEO and chief storyteller for StoryUP, the article titled Immersive Content. No longer the domain of ultra-early adopters and video gamers, virtual reality and augmented reality took off in 2017 … and Sarah was the perfect guide, helping us understand the possibilities and limitations of VR and AR. She also offered case studies from brands using VR, a welcome moment for those of us unable to visualize applications for VR outside of the gaming and consumer entertainment realm.

Also in February, I was delighted to interview Andy Weir, author of The Martian. We talked in Las Vegas just before his touching keynote talk at the ICC conference. Andy spoke poignantly about the deep challenges of being a full-time creative, and the lessons marketers may learn from his own journey. Among other nuggets of wisdom, he explained that marketers focus too much on the sale and, in doing so, lose sight of the power of a well-told story.

He explained, “Audiences are extremely aware of preachiness, especially in the modern era. Hollywood has decided that everything has to have some freaking political message, which drives me crazy. The Martian, by the way, had no political message. Dude didn’t want to die … that’s it. People quickly, even if they don’t do it consciously, identify the message, get mildly annoyed at it, and then start ignoring the parts of the movie that push that. That’s why I try to avoid it. Instead, find the interesting part of your story and then work towards the message, rather than desperately starting with the message and trying to work towards the interesting part.”

Paul’s plain-English tour of the categories of AI in marketing, and possible on-ramps for timid marketers to consider, was one of my key “no way?!” moments of 2017. If it’s a topic that interests you, I also recommend watching his session from Content Marketing Word (Machine-Assisted Narrative: How to Transform and Scale Your B2B Content With Artificial Intelligence), which is available on demand. Paul did a fantastic job explaining AI in terms even non-technophiles can understand. He also gave us a tour of the most promising technologies in the field, and how marketers are using each.
Also in April, we heard from Sara Noble, a Boston-based search consultant who helps iconic brands hire elite content marketing executives (Are You Ready to Hire Quality?). She said among her first tasks when she speaks to a potential hiring company is to figure out if they are serious about content – and thus worth consideration by top-flight talent. How data influences story (June 2017)
Some people have been amazing resources to the magazine over the years – people who keep coming back with great ideas, stories, and people. (Cameron Conaway, Andy Vale, and Kirk Cheyfitz … I’m looking at you.)
In that spirit, Andy brought us a “no way?!” story (Data-Driven Creative). Andy interviewed Fred Graver, a four-time Emmy-winning television producer and former head of Twitter TV, who uses social data to influence his screenwriting. Yes, it sounds kind of dystopian, but using analytics to influence creative is an interesting premise and process. And it’s an idea that is here to stay, given our inevitable future of AI-enhanced human creativity.

Most social media managers are hyper-aware of publishing accurate, appropriate social content online, but in Jennifer’s work accuracy can be a life-or-death situation. For a weather nerd like myself, it was a dream come true to speak to Jennifer and peer into her daily life.

Inspiration from the content maven at GE (August 2017)
GE’s social media personality has long been a favorite of mine. And my all-time favorite campaign from GE: its play on the Hey Girl meme for Valentine’s Day, but instead of Ryan Gosling, Thomas Edison is the flirt.
The company makes it look easy, but bringing that voice and personality to a brand as big and iconic as GE is a huge challenge (How GE Gives Recruiting Content a Personality Lift). Chief Marketing Officer Linda Boff said the key is in knowing what human values the brand stands for. She explained, “Our DNA is innovation, technology, research and manufacturing. It’s something we have all fallen in love with at GE. That’s our guiding light. We never try to pretend something we’re not.”
A lot of companies could name the same values as GE does, but what makes GE’s execution of those values special is the way it transforms them into a human personality. Boff said, “We often talk about showing up as a person would versus how a corporation would. How do you do that? With humor. A wink. A twist.”

Also in August, an article from one of my favorite CCO contributors, Kirk Cheyfitz (How Advertising is Killing the WWW). Kirk has long railed against the overreaches of advertising and how poor behavior by advertisers will ruin online marketing for the rest of us. Kirk is such an elegant writer that the article is worth reading if only to see how a masterful creative unpacks a complex topic. Also keep an eye out for his Guide to Digital Decency and Success in the same piece.

A Voice Revolution Caps the Year (November 2017)
Finally, in November we published one of my all-time favorite articles of all time. (That sentence just triggered our blog editor.) (Note from editor: Yes, the sentence made me clutch my pearls, but I kept it just this once for writer authenticity.)
Britney Muller from Moz explained the “no way?!” effect of voice assistants on SEO. Of course, I heard rumblings of how voice search would transform SEO, but Britney patiently explained it in a way that all marketers could understand. It’s possibly my favorite article of the year simply because of how much I learned.

Eric Schmidt steps down as Alphabet’s executive chairman
According to Alphabet, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt will be stepping down as Alphabet’s chairman and will transition to a new position as a technical advisor at the company while keeping a spot on the board.
“Larry, Sergey, Sundar, and I all believe that the time is right in Alphabet’s evolution for this transition. The Alphabet structure is working well, and Google and the Other Bets are thriving. In recent years, I’ve been spending a lot of my time on science and technology issues, and philanthropy, and I plan to expand that work.”

Comcast, AT&T award bonuses to employees after net neutrality repeal, tax cut
AT&T and Comcast employees are among those getting holiday bonuses after the Trump administration’s recent legislation repealing net neutrality and reforming taxes. Corporate taxes will permanently drop from 35 percent to 21 percent starting in January.
Both companies are giving $1,000 one-time bonuses to their non-exclusive ranks, while AT&T is investing another $1 billion in its capital expenditure plan for next year.
“Congress, working closely with the President, took a monumental step to bring taxes paid by U.S. businesses in line with the rest of the industrialized world. This tax reform will drive economic growth and create good-paying jobs.”

Comcast is also laying out a five-year, $50 billion infrastructure investment plan. The company also hinted that the investments could “add thousands of new direct and indirect jobs.”

Universal Music Group, Facebook sign multiyear deal to license label’s recorded music, published catalogs on Facebook, Instagram, Oculus
Facebook and Universal Music Group have announced a multiyear agreement where Universal becomes the first major label to license its recorded music and publishing catalogs for video and other social experiences across Facebook, Instagram, and Oculus.
“Together, Facebook and UMG are creating a dynamic new model for collaboration between music companies and social platforms to advance the interests of recording artists and songwriters while enhancing the social experience of social experience of music for their fans. This partnership is an important first step demonstrating that innovation and fair compensation for music creators are mutually reinforcing – they thrive together. We look forward to Facebook becoming a significant contributor to a healthy ecosystem for music that will benefit artists, fans, and all those who invest in bringing great music to the world.”

According to a press release, the partnership will let users upload and share videos that contain licensed music and personalize their music experiences on Facebook, Instagram, and Oculus. Eventually, functionality will expand to enable access across a range of social features. The agreement is meant to “serve as a foundation for a strategic partnership roadmap that will deliver new music-based experiences online.” Going forward, the companies will work together to introduce new music-based products to Facebook platforms like Messenger to develop the next generation of music products to engage social consumers.

Didi Chuxing raises $4B from undisclosed backers for AI, international expansion
Chinese ride-hailing company Didi Chuxing has raised $4 billion in new capital to support a range of new initiatives including international expansion.

Lawsuit alleges Facebook ads let employers target younger workers
A lawsuit filed Wednesday by the Communications Workers of America alleges that several U.S. employers engaged in age discrimination by placing recruiting ads on Facebook that targeted younger workers.
“This pattern or practice of discrimination denies job opportunities to individuals who are searching for and interested in jobs with the offending employers and employment agencies, and depresses the number of older workers who are hired.”

According to the lawsuit, companies including T-Mobile, Amazon, and Cox Communications imposed age limits on who could see the recruitment ads, with some limited to people younger than 38.
Facebook, who is accused of engaging in the practice but not named as a defendant, denied the claims in a blog post.
“US law forbids discrimination in employment based on age, race, gender, and other legally protected characteristics. That said, dimply showing certain job ads to different age groups on services like Facebook or Google may not in itself be discriminatory – just as it can be OK to run employment ads in magazines is broadly based and inclusive, not simply focused on a particular age group. In addition, certain employers want to attract retirees, or recruit for jobs with specific age restrictions like the military or airline pilots.”

Amazon has corrected some of the offending ads.
“We recently audited our recruiting ads on Facebook and discovered some had targeting that was inconsistent with our approach of searching for any candidate over the age of 18.”

The complaint included images of employment recruitment ads that when clicked by a user show a screen specifying the targeted ad group.
According to lead attorney Peter Romer-Friedman, the targeting harms older job-seekers because companies rely heavily on social media for job recruitment. Lawyers will seek class action status for the case and plans to add defendants.
Facebook stops using “disputing” labels on fake news, will show facts as Related Articles after test
Facebook has made two changes that it hopes will choke the spread of fake news on the platform. The first change is to the News Feed, where users will no longer see “Disputed Flags,” which are red badges displayed under articles flagged by Facebook’s third-party fact-checkers. Instead, they will see Related Articles, links to content from reputable publishers.
“Academic research on correcting misinformation has shown that putting a strong image, like a red flag, next to an article may actually entrench deeply held beliefs – the opposite effect to what we intended. Related Articles, by contrast, are simply designed to give more context, which our research has shown is a more effective way to help people get to the facts. Indeed, we’ve found that when we show Related Articles next to a false news story, it leads to fewer shares than when the Disputed Flag is shown.”

The second change is a new initiative designed to help Facebook understand how people judge the accuracy of information based on the news sources they use so the company can gauge how well its efforts are working.
A Medium post written by product designer Jeff Smith, user experience research Grace Jackson, and content strategist Seeetha Raj gives more context behind the decision. Over the last year, the three visited different countries to conduct research into how misinformation spreads in different contexts and how people react to “designs meant to inform them that what they are reading is fake news.”
Based on this, they identified four major ways Disputed Flags could be improved:
Context: Disputed Flags need to tell people immediately why fact-checkers dispute an article, because most users won’t bother clicking on links to additional information
Strong language backfires: Strong language or images like a red flag sometimes reinforce beliefs, even if they are marked as false
Accuracy vs. Speed: Facebook only applied Disputed Flags after two fact-checking organizations determined it was false, meaning that sometimes the company didn’t act quickly enough especially in countries with few fact-checkers.
Loss of additional context: Some of Facebook’s fact-checking partners rate articles on a scale (think “false,” “partly false,” “unproven,” or “true”), however that context is lost when a Disputed Flag was applied, especially when two organizations fact-checked the same article and came to different conclusions about its credibility.
Displaying Related Articles before someone clicks a link is meant to address all of these issues by making context easier to get, requiring the review of only one fact-checker, working even on articles with different ratings, and preventing a reaction that causes someone to double down.
Furthermore, Facebook says that Related Articles leads to fewer shares despite not meaningfully changing clickthrough rates. Users will also now see badges identifying which fact-checkers review an article.

Mozilla releases Firefox for Fire TV, touts YouTube access amid feud
Mozilla has brought its Firefox web browser to Fire TV.
In a blog post announcing the news, Mozilla specifically mentions YouTube support amid Amazon’s current feud with Google.
“Once installed, you can launch popular video websites, like YouTube, load any website address, and search the web for videos to play full screen on the Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick.”

3GPP signs off on 5G NR, first 5G specification
Members of the 3GPP, the governing organization for cellular standards, have ratified the Non-Standalone (NSA) 5G New Radio (NR) specification for what will form the basis of commercial 5G products.
3GPP will publish the specifications later this week that vendors will use to build off us, according to Qualcomm director of technical marketing Matt Branda.
The Standalone (SA) version is set to launch in June.
