One Piece Book Club: Chapters 1-3

Chapter 1:

Yippie!!!! One Piece begins with everyone’s favorite execution😁😁

New guy: Gold Roger, who is instantly executed lmaoooo

Our first look at Luffy!

New guy: Red Haired Shanks, who, presumably, has red hair

Luffy wants to be a pirate but he’s a little goober who can’t swim yet, approx 7 years old I think

New guy: Shanks’ first mate(unnamed so far)

They’re all pretty cool so far ngl

New guy: Makino! She’s the barmaid!! And Luffy puts everything on a treasure tab it seems. Also! Makino is very strong!! Look at that barrel of beer! (She’s holding a barrel labeled beer when introduced) A barrel of liquid is Not light

LUFFY YOU IDIOT WHAT ARE YOU EATING <- (i know exactly what he ate)

New guy: Higuma, some kind of bandit who loves terrorizing normal civilians

I think this line is really funny given Luffy exclusively has like crazy ass people as role models(to me)

I wanted to mention really quickly—but shanks got hit over the head with a glass bottle, which in real life is typically a life threatening attack. Realism is irrelevant given that this is one piece, but things like this are too common and underemphasized in media, so I wanted to bring it up in the off chance someone got the bright idea to recreate that move irl. Be careful not to kill people!!! It’s worryingly easy!!

Rest of the chapter goes something like this: Luffy defends shanks and his crews honor against higuma and gets beat for it, and the shanks and his crew pull of to stop that!!

Luffy gets snatched and eventually dropped into the sea, about to get eaten by a sea monster when shanks turns up and quite literally glares at it until it fucks off. Unfortunately, shanks lost an arm during the ordeal. Fortunately, Luffy gains a hat!

Ten year timeskip finds Luffy sailing away to become a pirate in his own!

Chapter 2:

Ah.

LUFFY ARE YOU ACTUALLY TWEAKING RN THATS GONNA KILL YOU

New guy: Lady Alvida of the… pirate ship. I’ll get back to you when I find out the name of the crew

New guy: Koby! My traumatized little guy!! No spine whatsoever but I think that’s a trauma response😁

New guy mention: Roronoa… Zolo. Because the translation hasn’t been updated I guess. Like, you know, just the official translation that I’ve been reading legally.

KOBY WHAT DID THEY DO TO YOU😭 YOURE TOO TRAUMATIZED TO USE YOUR OWN GETAWAY BOAT😭😭😭

Luffy they’d never make me hate on your dreams (doesn’t mean I won’t hate on you though be prepared <3)

Rest of chapter is Koby being like “I wanna be a Marine!” And alvida pulls up like “🤨😡you wanna do what?? You said you were gonna capture ME?!” And then luffy punches her and makes the other crew give him and koby a little boat to sail away (we also get quick lore that to get/find the one piece you gotta go to the grand line, which people refer to as the pirates graveyard)

Chapter 3:

Luffy and koby pull up at the marine town where ‘zolo’ is located, and have a quick meal cause food is important yeah.

This combination of panels is insane😭

“Maybe they just got carried away” listen little bro(this statement is funny for meta reasons) but that is a crazy ass assumption😭😭 like the thought process is genuinely interesting though yk like “oh, they reacted like crazy when hearing about the scary guy! Maybe they went overboard and also reacted hearing about the captain morgan guy”

New guy: Captain Morgan!! Some random guy that’s running the show in this town apparently

New guy:(officially) Roronoa Zoro! That very first panel of him the page before his full body that’s a partial side profile goes hard as hell, super menacing frfr

Also he’s like strung up like a more normal (“normal”) version of like idk jesus getting crucified?? I don’t know why I was thinking of it but??? Something about it feels like it’s supposed to be symbolic of something but I have a hard time displaying media literacy during first reads so let me come back to this one after witnessing parallels or something thanks gang

Zoro says he’s been up there for nine days!😟 which would kill a normal person I’m pretty sure because dehydration kills after like three days.. I’ve heard of cases where people can survive longer under very specific circumstances but that’s neither here nor there, bro looks like he has a head wound and a line of blood out the corner of his mouth so like realism for the loss lmao

New guy: little girl! Who I don’t know the name of, but she’s trying to feed Zoro and has a very kindness aura, though I would probably use a different word if I could recall a better one

New guy: Helmeppo, some guy with like an evil version of a Karen cut and the son of captain morgan. Bro is an ass stomping on that little girls food just because she made it weird😭😭

Yk what I AM seeing parallels but between all these panels where the background whites out and its two people (one of which is always Luffy) let me cook real quick I’ll come up with something later on trust trust

Also Luffy is wild, it’s so so interesting that he’s trying to decide if Zoro should join or not due to his having a bad reputation, makes it interesting to see his psychology regarding life as a pirate. He sees piracy as freedom to chase dreams and happiness and stuff, while most others perceive it as the ability to evade the law and do illegal acts/crime as you please

Zoro displaying good character as Luffy casually is so funny for no reason—though quick mention it’s pretty interesting that to me from my general perception of Luffy is that he’d like to eat anything, though food stomped into the ground is a reasonable line, just interesting given, again, his I’ll eat very many things attitude

Luffy tells the little girl Zoro ate the food she made for him and has a quick chat with her and koby about being good and stuff, and Luffy later punches Helmeppo after he(helmeppo) declares he was super lying about making a deal with Zoro to free him

Luffy declares he wants Zoro on his crew!!

Chapter 1-3 summary and thoughts:

- Luffy backstory where he gets devil fruit powers and how he got his hat from shanks

- Luffy meets Koby(wants to be a marine as his dream), saves him from alvida, and pulls up at a marine town

- Enter Zoro! Luffy decides he wants Zoro on his crew after judging him to be a good character and witnessing what it’s like in the marine town

Not much to say that I haven’t already, but I like it a lot! Pacing is pretty fast given the reputation regarding the length of one piece, if I had no clue what was to follow from this point, I’d claim it(the pacing) similar to that of CSM, but, yeah we all know lol.

One Piece Book Club: Chapters 16-21

Damn bro I’m getting tuckered out reading allat😭💀

End of an arc though!

Chapter 16:

Luffy did a balloon thing last chapter which, again, not possible so he’d die but you go king

Buggy and some used crewmates as meat shields, which, uh, been a hot minute idk what they defended against but I think it’s a toss up and slightly survivable, though if you have to use a human shield that usually means it’s not a fun attack

Guy is beating on Zoro and I’m ngl I think that’s not very good maybe that’s just me😁😁

ZORO FUCKING STABS HIMSELF???? INCORRECT BUZZER THAT IS NOT SURVIVABLE WITH BASE WOUNDS DURING A FIGHT SORRY GUY BUT THATS BOT SMART

Chapter 17:

Guy and Zoro fight some more and buggy tries to hold Zoro down except Luffy stops it cause it’s Zoro a fight so that’s a neat show of character

Zoro beats guy up and immediately passes out from probably blood loss, again, normal people don’t quite survive that sort of thing but like have fun w it I guess😭

Chapter 18:

Luffy and Buggy start scrapping!

Buggy gets pissy cause it turns out Luffy got his hat from shanks, who buggy says used to be a cabin boy with him when they were on a different pirates crew together

Buggy beats up the hat and Luffy is the pissed one now😬😬 have fun with that zamn

Chapter 19:

Neat cover art! Love watching this little guy do idiot stuff

Flashback!! Shank stole something from buggy apparently.. them as little guys is silly though!

New guy: unnamed older crewmate with interesting beard that gives gyro.. though this guy did it first I think, can’t imagine sbr preceded one piece lol

Ah, looks like buggy was trying to get the fruit by eating a fake and accidentally ate it fr cause shanks shocked him,, and the one map he had fell in the ocean.. man id have beef with him too for that one lol

Chapter 20:

Ah! Buggy is trying to fly at Nami after spotting her with his treasure.. and Luffy kicked him in the balls since he left his bottom half hanging out on the ground though lmaooo

Luffy got his hands on a map of the grand line!!!! Yippie!!!!

Damn they launched buggy into space like team rocket😭😭

Chapter 21:

Big tiger! Yay!

Dog reappears for a minute!! Love that little guy

Mayor pops back up one last time to say thank you and it’s very cool!

AUGHHHH THIS DOG. I’m ngl watched some of the anime a long while ago did Not care about the dog but reading the manga hits different, got me all sad😭

“That’s all I could save!” AUGHGGGHHH

I want to mention the shit they did to that poor dog does not seem like a survivable thing, and also what Luffy did to Richie and guy is like very bad I can believe they survived but also me personally I’d die

Chapter 14:

Buggy nuked the damn town😭😭😭

Zoro should NOT have survived that shit

Mayor is standing up to buggy!!

In this chapter I want to bring up that Luffy severely supports people wanting to chase and fight for their dreams but I think he also simultaneously doesn’t give a shit about those people/the specifics of their dreams. Obviously he cares a great deal about freedom, and by extension using it to chase your dreams, but I feel him finding some things just a little silly sometimes is also something that can coexist with his respect for people’s dedication to chasing dreams

Chapter 15:

(Zoro fighting with those wounds is NOT a healthy thing I think it’s absolutely something that could kill you)

YO A GUY PULLED A SWORD OUT OF HIS THROAT!!! SICK!!

That’s actually something that can be safely done and has been done as party tricks and shit, though I don’t quite believe it’s safe to use yourself as a sheath so… 1/2 point both ways for and against survivability

Yeah this is slightly what I meant about Luffy and his level of care for peoples dreams, cause he’d literally die fighting for his dreams but sometimes he just does stuff like this and I’m curious is it’s the level of care thing I mentioned or him taking a sort of analytical view and understanding there are better ways to go about it without, yk, suicidal and reckless pursuit.

Also obligatory “that guy should be dead” moment cause that guy is probably pushing 60 if not already in or after his 60s so like punching someone hard enough to make them pass out means you have them a pretty hard head wound/hit

One Piece Book Club: Chapters 8-11

Officially finished the first arc! On to a new one!

Chapter 8:

Oh buggy… you could have been so good if you were competent. Fandom is so real for making you act like that but in a calculated way.. kind of future talk given he was just introduced but like,, literally I’ve seen such interesting stuff, one fic I read gave you(buggy) bastardized logia healing, that’s literally so baller..

Anyways:

Chapter 10:

“For that, you die!!!” “Yes buggy.” Buggy enjoyers say in unison.

Luffy is (successfully) trying to eat his way through the metal bars of the cage he’s in. This is bad for your dental health, someone get this boy a glass of milk.

Zoro pulls up and slices buggy into (one, two, three…) four completely separate pieces. This is not something a normal person would survive

Chapter 11:

Buggy ate a devil fruit and very easily survives that last attack. Stabs Zoro… vaguely in the back and front?? Through him?? Either way, normal people would die, but it’s one piece so whatever. Maybe it’s lore like that (murmurs, gestures at 1113(?)) yk like it’s a long time coming and nobody will know until it’s literally right there

Dialogue between them goes hard even though me personally I’d die (in any of those positions)

The three escape and buggy declares that this is an act of war!

Honestly genuinely like reading one piece but this whole blog thing takes a lot of work… current pace of ~4 chapters a day means it’ll take around 280 days,,,.. sigh gotta lock in

One Piece Book Club: Chapters 4-7

Chapter 4:

Yknow how people are always wondering how Luffy found Zoro’s swords?

Turns out Luffy just slightly kidnapped Helmeppo and forced him to tell where they were!

New guy: Captain Morgan is officially introduced, really is a piece of work imo, the way he acts and treats Helmeppo(his son!!) parallels how Koby was being treated by Alvida, though more in the way they treat people in general

Zoro has a quick chat with koby before koby,,, gets shot?? Cliffhanger😒

Chapter 5:

Koby got shot😟

I knew the violence got dialed back a bit when they animated one piece but I didn’t quite realize how much…

Ah,, on the other hand Luffy goes to Helmeppo’s room to pick up Zoros swords, which is actually where they were in the live action! Heavy props to the LA, even if people don’t like it you gotta give it credit for the general quality and dedication put into it

Quick flashback:

We meet Kuina and see the dojo Zoro grew up in, as well as meeting her father who is the guy that runs the dojo!

Kuina dies the day after she and Zoro promise to become the best swordsmen☹️

Flack back to present:

Koby and Zoro are about to be shot when Luffy jumps in the way with Zoros swords!!

And, as this seems to be a running bit, I’d like to mention based on my count, Luffy blocked seven-ish bullets, three collectively in his arms, three in the general main body, and one in the thigh area, which, you know, isn’t something somebody can survive under normal circumstances. Getting shot in the arm is surprisingly lethal by the way! (Well, mostly the shoulder region but being shot in general is usually easily lethal under a variety of circumstances)

Zoro joins Luffy as the swordsman/first mate!

Chapter 6:

One of the unnamed marines calls the devil fruit “the secret treasure from those seas”, some kind of lore? Or maybe emphasis on the part where devil fruits are actually super rare

You know what there are kind of a lot of references to him being some kind of devil and stuff, including a line in this or the previous chapter calling him son of the devil… I know it’s about devil fruits but also…. Future stuffs..

HOLY SHIT HES ORDERING HIS MEN TO SHOOT THEMSELVES FOR NOT WANTING TO FIGHT?????

Some fighting stuffs some some… Zoro calls Luffy captain!! Yippie!!

Chapter 7:

So people hype up Oda as a genius and I’m not disputing the fact that he’s smart with his writing but it feels like a reach to consider so many little things as foreshadowing.

On that note, is this foreshadowing?

Anyways.

Marines and townfolk: You saved me😊 the evil is defeated👍👍

Luffy(+Zoro): oh sick

Marines: gtfo of here you’re pirates😡😡

Anyways Luffy and koby beat each other up to show they aren’t allies or anything, but it’s kind of a one sided beat down lmao.

Chapter closes with another cliffhanger lol “one serious mistake” okay so tell us what it is🤨
