one of my absolute least favorite ways to view a story is “wow something sad and pointlessly horrible happened to this character that was so unfair. This is BAD WRITING” like yeah sometimes it can be but also maybe that was…the writers point…to write a tragedy…famously not stories that make you feel good. And there’s meaning in that too and I wish people would try to interact with that more instead of assuming bad faith on the writers part

#mostly when talking about stories that are labeled are tragedies this doesn’t often happen. though I have seen it sometimes. but primarily #this is about tragedies within a wider narrative bc I find a lot of people get mad about those. character death is a tool just like every #other piece of a narrative but it’s more contentious bc it makes people feel bad and I rarely see people engage with it as a tool of the #story. was that death actually badly written or did it just happen to a character you liked? was the idea of ‘they could’ve done much more #with their lives’ part of the tragedy? that sort of thing #siren says #writing stuff #tragedy #with character death as a tool the issue is you cut yourself off from the potential that character could have alive in a story where you #dont automatically assume they'll die (so genres besides tragedies horror etc) is the impact of their death worth more than what you could #do with them as living active characters etc
