exorcist rules of social engagement seem pretty janky, but then you've got natori who (understandably) doesn't want to play by those rules and has (somewhat less understandably) resorted to reinventing "how to make friends" from first principles.

#press says nbf #look at me tagging! i've come so far #anyway i also think their relationship is extra interesting in terms of where it comes in the story #natsume starts out really alienated from both yokai and humans #he was obviously a sweetheart the whole time #but for the first few issues he's constantly citing the kindness he's recently been shown #as the reason he's started to like people and wants to protect them #it's also when he starts opening up to the idea of actually being friends with yokai #natori shows up and instantly showers him with attention #affection #understanding and connection #and yes he's a creepy weirdo about it lmao i sent a giant paper man into your bedroom to test you and showed up at your school #let's be besties #but if natsume didn't see him as a threat to the other relationships he's already invested in i think he'd feel very differently about him #in some ways natori is too late!#otoh a natsume who believes in friendship has also in some ways been softened up #i'm sure everyone has already had these thoughts i'm just spitballing
