Last Saturday night I was at a David Duchovny concert in Vancouver. The concert venue was at the Imperial - a great venue- but in a neighborhood that the Urban Dictionary says is the worst neighborhood in all of Canada and some homeless advocacy groups argue is the poorest neighborhood in all of North America. Many of us at the concert had traveled to Vancouver from across the globe and there was some fear and trepidation which I over heard from other concert goers about this neighborhood. I had worked as a homeless advocate and have been on the board of a homeless shelter in the 90′s in Albuquerque. I want to share my viewpoints of my experience in the worst neighborhood in Canada from an X-File frame of view because what brought me to Vancouver on October 14 was, of course, to see David Duchovny in Vancouver where the X-files was and is being filmed during a week-end which included 1013 Friday. How does homelessness and the X-file find a theme together? That is outlined in the link to the video above.

I guess one way to set the mood is to say that my friend and I were only spending a week-end in Vancouver, but many other David Duchovny fans had been in Vancouver a week and had been to many famous filming sites. My friend and I were staying at a Ramada fairly near the venue. We drove through the area at first looking for parking before deciding that the valet parking at the Ramada was the best choice. As we drove by I said- looking at the homeless and the city streets and remembering the video above- “oh, my God, this is the neighborhood they shot “Home Again” in.” I realize, of course, the complete insensitivity to the plight of homelessness to see it in such focused X-file terms, but it was my frame of mind at the time. My friend and I did in fact look for the filming sites of “Home Again” as we walked around the neighborhood, but because it is from the last season which we have not yet seen hundreds of times (only dozens) we were unable to locate exact locations. We did watch the episode again back in Seattle the night before I flew home.

On Saturday morning we decided to walk to the Ovaltine Restaurant (the filming location of a scene in Jose Chung) and to go by the venue. We found ourselves walking down what I now realize is the area considered the worst two blocks in at least Canada and possibly North America. The poverty was clear- people living in tents on the street a few blocks away from some fine, upscale and beautiful neighborhoods. We then went to the Ovaltine Restaurant, the venue, back to the hotel for an hour of two, back to the venue to stand in line (starting at noon), walked back through the neighborhood to gastown for a bite to eat and back to the venue to stand in line again, before taking a cab back to the hotel after the concert.

I want to state fairly clearly that there was not one time I felt scared or fearful (although I would not walk back to the hotel in the evening because I am not foolish) and the only time I was asked for money was after leaving the venue after the concert. As we walked down the blocks at 9 a.m on a Saturday morning, we were greeted with “Good morning Ladies” and comments that our coffee cups were pink. When our way was blocked and I said “excuse me” people moved out of the way politely. There was nothing unpleasant about that walk except for being confronted with the fact that poverty exists and people (human beings) live in horrific conditions day in and day out.

As we stood in line for 6 hours to see a concert, there was an need on an occasion to use a restroom. The coffee shop sometimes let you and sometimes said that it was just for customers so my friend and I started using the community center on the corner which was truly more of a homeless center. Again, I was greeted, offered water and shown the restroom. My friend found blood in one of the restrooms so we climbed the stairs to use one on the other floor. There were food being served, there were disposable containers for needles, there were signs telling people where to go if they were overdosing. People were being afforded respect and dignity. I was impressed.

Here are some statistics from “Addressing Homelessness in Metro Vancouver” a white paper published in February 2017.

An estimated 80% of homeless people suffer a chronic health issue (45% suffer two or more health conditions concurrently)15 b. 44% of sheltered and 55% of unsheltered homeless have an addiction (2014)16 c. 33% of sheltered and 36% of unsheltered homeless suffer mental illness (2014)10 d. 30% of sheltered and 27% of unsheltered homeless have a physical disability (2014)1

As we stood in line several neighborhood people talked to us. We actually had sandwiches we did not want to eat, but couldn’t find any person that wanted the sandwiches. Again most neighborhood people were polite, courteous and curious about why so many of us were waiting in line in front of a concert venue 6 hours before the doors opened. I laughed on and off for hours at a woman who said “what are you protesting?” I told my friend that we were the laziest protesters ever - no signs, no marching, no chanting- worst protest ever. At one point a women who appeared to be suffering from withdrawal of some time fell. Other people in line offered her assistance but she could not focus on them enough to accept their help. She was in her own world. After a few minutes when I witnessed her getting her shaking under control and her checking her legs to see if she was hurt, i went up to her. From her perspective I was a big brown blob walking up to her and I startled her. I told her that when she was ready I was willing to help and she desperately reached for my hands. I helped her up and she grasped a tree until she was ready to stand and walk on her own. I offered her food. She did not want it. She never asked for money. Never threatened me.

The next morning I woke up thinking of that episode “Home again” and the point of the episode. I wondered how many of us X-Files fans might have thought back to that episode that night having experienced these and other moments. The point - people are not trash. They are not disposable. They are not to be discarded. I can walk away from that neighborhood and I can avoid the similar downtown areas in Albuquerque, but the people and the problem still exist. From my experience in Albuquerque I know the underlying issues of homelessness - mental health issues, substance abuse, traumatic brain injuries, lack of literacy, lack of job skills, disenfranchisement from society, family and friends having giving up on them. I know that veterans make up a large percentage of our homeless population in America, I know that senior citizen homeless numbers rose drastically in 2008 and subsequent years when retirement savings were loss and, like Vancouver, native people are a higher percentage in the homeless population than in the general population. We can look to our educational systems, our prisons systems, our health care services (especially for the mentally ill), our foster care systems and juvenile care systems and to our economy. The reality is a whole lot of us who go through our lives as hard working, normal citizens are closer to homelessness than we would like to admit. In the past year I had to borrow money from friends and move into a friends home because of unemployment and I actually consider myself a fairly successful human. We are all just humans doing the best we can in our life with what we have. Nothing could remind us more of that than having spent so much time in that area around people who despite their issues were polite and courteous to us.

I know our fan groups are a socially conscious and caring group of people who donate to all kinds of causes - let David Duchovny issue a post asking people to donate to charities on his birthday and beautiful things happen. The proceeds from this concert went to hurricane victim. This is a fan group which organizes volunteer and donation events for charities in honor of Gillian Anderson’s and Scully’s birthday. The holiday season is ahead of us . I am especially asking something of every one who attended that concert and interacted that night with a person who lives on the street in the worst neighborhood of North America. If you fall into this category, than this holiday season in honor of “Home Again” and the X-files they do something in your communities to alleviate the effects of homelessness, reduce the possibility of someone becoming homeless or end some of the underlying causes of homelessness - take blankets or socks to a shelter, donate to a literacy program, call your legislators and demand better services for addiction treatment. Buy subways cards and pass them out whenever you see someone with a sign saying hungry.

At the very least, the next time you are in a situation where you are going to interact with homeless individuals (perhaps because of a David Duchovny concert), please treat people with respect and kindness. People are not trash. They are not disposable. I was reminded of this last Saturday.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has accused the President Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives' Congress (APC) of using the instruments of state to execute a witch-hunt of political opponents.

While speaking at a colloquium in Abuja, Obasanjo alleged that the federal government has been using anti-graft agencies, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC), to pursue its opponents.

He said the Ministry of Justice is being used to perpetuate the abuse of power, too, noting that judges are being intimidated to do the ruling party's bidding in election petitions.

He said, "Some institutions created for normal administration and dispensation of justice, like the EFCC, the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC), the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the Ministry of Justice are being directed to witch-hunt and pursue political opponents.

"The use of intimidation, violence and physical attacks have started in some states. It is understood that judges are already being intimidated so as to prepare them to do the ruling party's bidding in election petitions. All these are visible in today's practice of democracy in Nigeria."

The former president warned that Nigeria's democracy has a long way to go, saying that still plagued by dangerous signs.

"For me, that after almost 20 years of the beginning of the present dispensation, it has not been derailed, is enough a development in progress, even though there are many unpalatable practises and dangerous signs that have shown their ugly heads, which is the strongest indication that our democracy is alive but, it cannot be said to be hale and hearty. Practitioners of democracy must be democrats, if you have a lot to be desired," he said.

Obasanjo advocates for more women participation

Speaking on the theme of the colloquium, "Nigeria's democracy: The journey so far and the role of women", Obasanjo said Nigeria's democracy needs to open itself up for increased participation of women.

He said an amendment needs to be made to the constitution to enforce increased participation of women in the country's democratic set up.

He said, "In this present administration, there are 15 women members in the house of representatives. It is not only unacceptable but makes mockery of gender balance.

"There must be amendment of our constitution, not to allow any gender to have less than 40 percent in any parliament.

"The health of our democracy can be judged by the participation of women. Democracy is a system of government that allows team spirit and debate before decisions are reached; it is a government for all citizens to benefit without fear or favour."

The colloquium marked the 70th birthday anniversary of Mrs. Josephine Anenih, a former Minister for Women Affairs and Social Development under the administration of former president, Goodluck Jonathan.

World Cup 2018: The world thinks Cristiano Ronaldo set a record; now there’s a debate on Asamoah Gyan & AFCON's relevance

When Cristiano Ronaldo scored against Spain at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, new broke that the Portugal captain was the first player to score in 8 consecutive major tournaments. No! Ghana's Asamoah Gyan has that record and it's 9 consecutive major tournaments.

For a football argument, anything will do. Records have been in the game for so long but social media has thrown more light on it, lighting up the never-ending debate of who did what.

Just like Pele’s 1000 goals, there was no social media, however, the feat is popularly accepted by many who love the beautiful game.

The idea of breaking and setting records does not have sole proprietorship when it comes to winning an argument in football. But it does help. When the going gets tough, people typically switch from the quantitative ‘how many goals?’ jargon to the qualitative ‘what’s his/her impact on the team?’.

So, has been the case for the most debate-igniting footballers of our time; Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Records, however, have played a major role in these debates.

When Cristiano Ronaldo put three goals past arguably the best goalkeeper in world football at the 2018 FIFA World Cup tournament in Russia when Portugal took on Spain, there was bound to be a record-shaming, record-touting, record-subbing in the football community.

Cristiano Ronaldo had done it again and normally the shading target is Argentina’s very own Lionel Messi.

Just that this time, there was an unfamiliar foe, Ghana Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan.

Not unfamiliar in the sense of performing on the big stage. No! Asamoah Gyan is Africa’s leading top scorer at a FIFA World Cup tournament. And that counts.

But unfamiliar when it comes to a debate involving Cristiano Ronaldo. Messi has that accolade.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s three goals against Spain in Portugal’s opening 2018 World Cup game has sparked a debate in world football, with Africa in the spotlight.

The commentator in the game said Ronaldo was the first player to have scored in eight consecutive major football tournaments.

Since the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has not played in eight FIFA World Cup tournaments, the ‘major football tournaments’ were obviously not limited to the World Cup.

What are the major football tournaments for national teams then?

International competitions with regards to major football tournaments are loosely grouped in three; the world, continental by confederation and Asia (the largest continent).

The World part of the categorization has the FIFA World Cup and the FIFA Confederations Cup with the Continental by Confederation having the UEFA European Football Championship, CAF Africa Cup of Nations, CONMEBOL Copa America and CONCACAF Gold Cup. Asia has Asian Cup.

News that the African Cup of Nations qualifies as a major tournament sets the tone for a social media war with regards to what record reporters think Cristiano Ronaldo might have set.

For clarity, the record proposed indicates Cristiano Ronaldo is the first man to score in eight consecutive major tournaments.

The CNN wrote in their report:

"It should come as no surprise that the five-time Ballon d'Or winner, scorer of 43 goals for Real Madrid this season and widely regarded as one of the greatest to have played the game, etched his name into the history books in the process -- becoming the first man to score in eight consecutive major tournaments and only the fourth to score in four separate World Cups."

No. Ronaldo is not if Gyan’s records are anything to go by.

Asamoah Gyan does one better having scored in NINE consecutive major tournaments for his country.

The Black Stars captain scored at the 2006 FIFA World Cup tournament in Germany, the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana, the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations in Angola, the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament in South Africa, the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea and the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.

That makes it nine in all for Ghana’s prolific striker.

The argument extends to the fact the Africa Cup of Nations is played at a two-year interval and that could be the reach of Ronaldo’s feat. But rules are rules.

And once FIFA recognizes the time-space of Africa’s top international tournament, its relevance cannot be undermined.

Asamoah Gyan has been criticized for a lot of things and denied many accolades he deserves. The leader of Ghana’s senior national team who is a great goal scorer has sometimes not had his full praise due to the location he scores his goals.

But time and time again, Gyan has proven that he can rub shoulders with the game’s biggest scorers. He has done it at the highest stage of international football; the FIFA World Cup.

So, don’t take this one from him because you lack the instinctive football decency to recognize the Africa Cup of Nations as a major football tournament.

Asamoah Gyan was the first player to score in eight consecutive major international tournaments. He's done nine now. Fact.

However, in football arguments, whatever makes you look good is what is highlighted upon. We could see a twist in what has already been said just to keep Cristiano Ronaldo looking good in the eyes of the football world.

Don’t be surprised if you see ‘Cristiano Ronaldo is the first Ballon d'Or winner to score in eight consecutive major tournaments’.

Well, Gyan has never won the Ballon D’Or and this shade gets to Lionel Messi the more. The usual norm we’re used to.

Sex & Relationships: 'I used to love getting naked — And then I got pregnant'

These were the words of encouragement (okay, commands) I gave to my significant partner before our first time having sex in the three months since I'd given birth to our daughter.

“Don’t touch me too much. And don’t go too fast,” I said. “And don’t be mad if I don’t look like I’m having that much fun.”

In response, my ever-supportive partner remained calm. “It feels the same,” he said as soon as he was inside me.

He’s right, I thought. Then, No he’s not!!! He can’t be!!!

Physically, my doctor had reassured me that I was fit for sex, but psychologically I was a wreck. I was terrified that things would be permanently different ~down there~ or that I wouldn't be able to experience pleasure like before.

Most of all, I was extremely aware of the extra pounds I was still carrying on my hips, thighs, and butt. I didn't want anyone, even my loving, sweet partner, to accidentally graze my mushy tummy or my engorged breasts.

The brutal truth: Twelve weeks after pushing a tiny human out of my vagina, I still didn't feel quite like myself.

'I thought I'd love being pregnant. I was wrong.'

When I first found out that I was pregnant, I assumed I’d be one of those women who lovesbeing pregnant. I imagined pulling a Demi Moore and posing naked for my partner every few weeks or so, clutching my belly with one arm and hugging my breasts with the other so he could capture every glorious stage of my natural transformation.

After all, I had always been super confident about my body. Sure, I had my insecurities like any other human woman, but for the most part I was comfortable and happy with my willowy figure. In my twenties, I had been the person who'd take their clothes off first during hookups, or would be the one to suggest late night skinny-dipping.

But as soon as I started to gain weight during the first trimester, every uptick in the number on the scale unnerved me. Rather than celebrating the “miracle of life,” I found myself lamenting every bit of bulge that appeared on my butt, breasts, and belly. Even my upper arms seemed thicker. I felt wider everywhere-from ankles to neck-maybe because I was imagining it, or maybe because I was retaining that much water. My naked body looked foreign and unfamiliar.

'I couldn't see myself the same way others did.'

Throughout, my partner was reassuring. “Do you realize how hot you are?” he’d say whenever he caught me naked. He looked at me longingly like he always had, and seemed genuinely turned on by my expanding form (especially my plumped-up chest and ass). Strangers were kind as well, often going out of their way to note how I “carried well,” or appeared to be “glowing.”

Still, I couldn’t see myself the way they did. By the second trimester, I dreaded getting dressed each morning because nothing seemed to fit. I sometimes recoiled from my S.O.'s touch. I avoided mirrors. Try as I might, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I’d lost something-that I was no longer as attractive because of how my body had changed.

'I wasn't used to hating how I looked-and I didn't like that feeling.'

Obviously, weight gain is normal (and necessary) during pregnancy. But I couldn't get my brain to accept that. I obsessively looked up info online about the dangers of gestational weight gain to a mother's and a baby's health-hypertension, gestational diabetes, delivery complications. Even after testing negative for gestational diabetes, I worried about every additional pound.

I’d be lying if I said I was mainly concerned about health risks. Mostly, I just hated the way I looked-and I wasn’t used to feeling that way about my body.

I tried to figure out what "normal" was, and sent frantic texts to friends asking them how much weight they’d gained during pregnancy. But the responses didn't help me much in my panic. One friend reported gaining 40 pounds during her first pregnancy, but only 17 during her second. Another friend gained 32 pounds by week 24, but barely gained in the weeks thereafter. Yet another gained 65 pounds, but lost it all somehow within two months postpartum.

The information I gathered confirmed one thing: That every body, and every pregnancy, is different.

'Do something about your f*cked up attitude.'

One morning, 30 weeks into my pregnancy, I found myself standing in front of a full-length mirror, scrutinizing every inch of my third trimester figure. The reflection I saw in the mirror looked nothing like that person I was, the person who used to be so eager to get naked.

In that moment, what I loathed even more than the sight of my body was the self-conscious woman staring back at me. You are about to be the mother of a daughter, I reminded myself. If you want her to have a healthy body image, you’re going to have to do something about your own f*cked-up attitude. You’re going to have to rewire your brain, because thinness should not equal confidence.

That morning, I pledged to be kinder to myself. I wanted to be a mom who accepted herself at any weight. Who felt good about herself for reasons that had nothing to do with her appearance. Who would not be a hypocrite when she told her daughter to love herself for her heart, her mind, and her character.

I hid the household scale in the back of a closet and forced myself to compliment my own reflection. “You are smart,” I told myself. “Stop being so hard on yourself.” During sex, I tried my best to shelve every toxic thought that popped into my head. Slowly but surely, I re-learned how to enjoy myself in bed.

And slowly but surely, it helped. By the time my due date arrived, I was sending my partner hilarious nude selfies so we could marvel together at my metamorphosis. I had to admit: The female body is truly capable of magnificent things.

'I want to be an example for my daughter.'

Of course, developing an authentic sense of body confidence is an ongoing process. After giving birth, I faced a new set of hurdles that impacted my sense of self. I became preoccupied by how long it would take to shed the baby weight, and how weird sex would feel after the vaginal trauma that is pushing a pumpkin-sized baby out of a canal more suited to cucumbers.

It's a process-and it's something I'm still dealing with (in case you couldn't tell by the first-time post-baby sex story). The difference is that now my daughter is here with me, in the outside world. Every time I hold her in my arms, I’m reminded of just how important it is to lead by example.

If I want my daughter to be comfortable in her skin, I have to keep working toward being comfortable in mine. I have to keep being kind to myself, reminding myself that I am more than my weight or my body shape. I have to learn to feel like myself, no matter what the scale says.

I'm doing it for both of us.
