LOUIS AND HIS GAY ASS EXIT SONGS: EVER FALLEN IN LOVE (WITH SOMEONE YOU SHOULDN'T'VE)
"it was written by lead singer Pete Shelley about his feelings for another man."
"The story of Buzzcocks' pansexual punk anthem Ever Fallen in Love"
"This was someone who was very confused - confused by his sexuality, confused by love and lust and things, and he wrote songs that told the truth about love."
"I tried to be as gender neutral as possible in writing songs, because for me I could use the same song for either sex," he told Manchester DJ Dave Haslam.
"he did reveal to the Outpunk fanzine that it was about a friend called Francis."
"Punk may be thought of as a macho scene, but Shelley never saw a reason to hide his sexuality."
bonus:
"Though most of Shelley's songs were gender neutral, that wasn't always the case. His 1981 solo single Homosapien, with its opening line "I'm the shy boy, you're the coy boy", was an out-and-out electro LGBT anthem."

So the first 2 pics are ones I don't have colored variants for but I got the ghost one today and was very excited bc the insert is like 28 pages long and fully illustrated and it's gorgeous (I'll send pics if you want) and then my 2 fob records and my EC ep and the silver cobra fbr anniversary vinyl. The only 2 picture discs I have are the watchmen one because it sounds like shit but it looks really really cool on my wall and the electric century self titled because it was only released on picture disc because mikey way hates me personally. And then i have my bones uk vinyl which was very cool because the insert had the guitar tabs to one of their songs and my ls dunes one. My absolute favorite is my there's a dyke in the pit 7 inch which has 4 singles on it from bikini kill, tribe 8, seven year bitch, and Lucy Stoners and was the first release from outpunk records in the 90s, which was the first explicitly queercore record label. Also as u can see it's a colored vinyl and idk why but it's genuinely the highest sound quality vinyl I have it's insane
I Need That 45.
this is a REALLY cool collection those picture discs look really cool (if nothing else 💔) and that is a really really cool selection of albums. the ghost one comint with a 28 page insert sounds completely right. like i wouldnt expect it but its exactly how its supposed to be i think. alsooooo that split vinyl. i love split vinyl it looks so fucking cool.

an article by Jill Reiter from Outpunk Magizne, about her 1994 film “In Search of Margo-Go”, that starred Kathleen Hanna.
“ In 1994, Jill Reiter began a feature starring Kathleen Hanna, called IN SEARCH OF MARGO-GO. Her playful synth-punk romp re-envisioned NYC club culture as an acid-hued comic book, equal parts LIQUID SKY and THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI. Reiter recently collaborated with animator Katie Bush to finish the film after two decades. “
transcript under cut !
1 :
In Search of Margo-Go
The idea for the movie came about when Kathleen Hanna (of Bikini Kill) was visiting NYC a year and a half ago. We got dressed up like total freaks and called ourselves neo-new romantics and ran around the streets of NYC. We were discussing this zine that my friend Iraya Robles had done about the early punk days of the Go-Go's (Mark's in Time). I mentioned that Margot Olavarria, the original bass player for the Go-Go's, lived only three blocks away from my apartment. The title “In Search of Margo-Go” at first was a really random title, but as the movie idea developed, it came to mean: searching for role models that aren't the obvious ones – digging deeper and uncovering information about women who did a lot of cool stuff in the early punk and nu-wave scenes but weren't recognized because they didn't get famous, or maybe just cause they were women. A lot of their contributions are buried or lost because the records or zines are out of print. Some of the music wasn't documented at all, (i.e – film, recorded, written about.) We were all really into the Go-Go's as teens. But there is a lot we never knew about them. They were originally part of the late seventies punk scene, and Margot was the Go-Go that didn't want to sell out, so they kicked her out of the band and became “America's Sweethearts.”
The movie pays homage to a lot of things from the eighties that we were inspired by, such as totally wacked out do-it-yourself low budget music and fashion, and the comic book Love and Rockets. It also references the movies “Liquid Sky” and “The Hunger”. Those two movies were some of the few movies that had actual lesbian images of werido people we thought we could identify with more that those in “Desert Hearts”, but even those movies were sadly lacking in many [?]. In Search Of Margo-Go is also an antidote to the John Hughes movies like “Sixteen Candles”, “Pretty in Pink”, that so many freaky queer youth in the eighties watched, looking desperately to see themselves reflected in the media, but never quite feeling legitimized because on the lack of queers in films at the time. Imagine “Pretty in Pink” with Molly Ringwald as a dyke.
This movie is important to do because I want there to be movies for dykes that reflect my lesbian sensibility, which is quite different from mainstream lesbian culture. There are hardly any lesbian movies that are campy a la John Waters. I am really into kitschy aesthetic and it is really fun to make a movie about dykes that is crazy and colorful.
In Search of Margo-Go
is part tragicomedy, part costume drama, part queerpunk porno.
I wanted to talk about the idea of collective film-making that we are creating as we make the film. The whole film, from the writing to the planning and filming is a collaborate effort of many amazing woman (and a few cool boys). Most of the people involved other than some of the tech crew have never made a film before. We were into the process of learning by doing with women who had access to film school or have certain skills teaching other women on the set. It's Punk Rock film-making, proving that you don't have to be a film school graduate to make a film.
The Soundtrack.
Myself, Iraya Robles of the band Sta-Prest and Kathleen Hanna are contributing to the soundtrack. The soundtrack is exciting, because all these cool people are going to Nu-Wave music for the soundtrack, no matter what their normal music style is. Potential contributors so far are Kicking Grant, Cheesecake, Phranc (was in a punk bands Nervous Gender and Catholic Discipline). We want to expose unsung heroes in punk music by having a lot of all-female Nu-Wave bands that inspired us (Bound and Gagged, The Inflatable Boy Clams, and The Varve), on the soundtrack. We'd like to re-release their music from obscure out of print singles or albums. We also wanted to have some of these people do some new music for the soundtrack (Josie Cotton- who did “Johnnie Are You Queer” and was in the movie “Valley Girl”) and Robin Johnson (from the movie “Times Square), and others too exciting to mention.’
2: Kathleen and I did a little self interview about the movie, but I didn't have a tape recorder, so the stuff she says isn't in her exact words...
Kathleen – When I saw the John Hughes movies as a teen, it was really frustrating because the same sex characters always gave each other these longing looks, and so many of them appeared to be gay, but then at the end of the movie it was a total mindfuck and letdown, cause the boy and girl always ended up together. There was never any passion between the male/female characters, and it always seemed wrong that they ended up together.
Jill – Movies are a fantasy outlet to escape into and many mainstream movies have happy, ‘feelgood' endings. But Hollywood's idea of a happy ending is my idea of a horrible one – i.e the fag boy ends up with the tomboy girl. One reason to make this movie is to finally have control and to be able to make a movie end the way we want for once, and have the girl get the girl . It was so frustrating as a teen. I was really isolated from other gay people and I really looked to movies for role models and a legitimization of my freaky lifestyle. It was bad enough that I was surrounded by straight people and I could never end up with the girl, but to see these characters in movies that gave off gay signals or just that I was all crushed out end with a character of the opposite sex just made me feel even more isolated
ON MOLLY RINGWALD Kathleen – When I used to see all the John Hughes movies with Molly Ringwald in them, I had to totally displace my emotions. I had this boyfriend and I was all jealous cause in my head I thought that he wanted to fuck her. Really I did, but I was too unconformable and anxiety ridden about queerness so I had to describe it internally in a het way.

Happy Preservation Week! (Part 5 :)
Hello again, and Happy Preservation Week, everyone!
This is the 5th and final installment of our Preservation Week 2021 blog series, if you missed Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 or Part 4, feel free to check them out first!
In our previous post (Part 4), I described the preservation of a set of unexposed Daguerreotype plates and the original wooden box they were issued in. For those objects, I made an (admittedly) complex preservation enclosure that will keep everything safe in storage, but it might be a little confusing to the next person who opens the box. Sometimes it’s hard to make a simple, easy to use preservation enclosure… you find yourself making a series of “simple” decisions that snowball into something complex and baffling!
In this, our final Preservation Week post, I’ll discuss a preservation enclosure that needed to fulfill a lot of different requirements, and the object that it houses is one which I never expected to find in a library! This object is part of the Outpunk Archive at NYU, which contains materials from 1989-1998 relating to Outpunk (both the zine and the queercore music label). While most of the collection consists of papers, photographs, and music recordings, there are also several T-shirts and ...a skateboard!
Tumblr media
Apparently, a member of the Riot Grrrl movement owned and adorned this skateboard: one half of the top of the board is spray painted white, and the words “FIGHT HOMOPHOBIA” are spray painted in orange on the other half (Photo 1). Lots of stickers, self-adhesive labels and zine-style xeroxed drawings are pasted to the bottom surface of the board (Photo 2). This person probably lived in San Francisco in the late 1990’s, because one drawing asserts that “The Mission Bay Project SUCKS!” (Photo 3).
Tumblr media
A few of the papers are bright yellow, orange or green, and these glow brightly under UV, suggesting that the papers contain daylight fluorescent pigments (Photo 4). These pigments look unusually bright in sunlight because they absorb UV radiation and reflect it back to the eye as visible light. While we were examining the top of the board under UV, we found yet another message hidden beneath the white paint... at one point, the owner of this skateboard believed that “FASHION IS A SCAM”, but she later decided to paint over this message (Photos 5-6).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So... why the heck was this skateboard in the conservation lab? Well, it’s a lot bulkier than the average library book, and since the wheels work perfectly we couldn’t just leave it on a shelf! We needed to give the skateboard a preservation enclosure to keep it from rolling around in the stacks, or being mistaken for an NYU student’s property. Most of all, we wanted to give the skateboard a preservation enclosure to prevent its minor damage from getting worse: the plywood board is cracked and splintering at one corner, the sandpapery grip tape is flaking off around the edges, and most of the stickers and drawings are torn and/or curling. We briefly discussed whether we should perform a little conservation work to stabilize these parts of the board; in the end, we decided that we didn’t want to obscure evidence of the skateboard’s use, and everything was stable enough to withstand gentle handling. ...Some may be thinking, “COME ON, it’s a skateboard! This is ridiculous.” To that I say, it’s part of an archive now! We have to treat it carefully, so it lasts a long time. :)
The library’s curators are interested in showing this skateboard during classes, and it’s possible that the object will be requested frequently in the Special Collections reading rooms. As you may recall, the main purpose of my Daguerreotype enclosure was to keep all of the components safe during storage and transit, but the skateboard’s enclosure needed to fulfill two additional requirements: it needed to be simple enough for anyone to unpack/repack easily, and because the skateboard is double-sided, the enclosure needed to function as a double-sided display mount. Under the supervision of Jessica Pace, Preventive Conservator, I created a simple preservation enclosure that would protect the skateboard and allow the curators to safely display either side.
Tumblr media
We started by ordering a custom archival box with a drop-wall, which allows you to remove a bulky object more easily (Photo 7). Because the skateboard is a bit heavy and awkward, I also made a handling tray from cross-laminated sheets of archival corrugated cardboard. This tray (Photo 8) allows you to pull the skateboard out of the box, rather than lifting it. I also adhered strips of corrugated board to the bottom of the tray which adds a little more rigidity and allows for air-flow underneath when the tray is pulled out of the box. We decided it was best to store the skateboard wheels-down, so we had to find a way to prevent it from moving around in the box, or rolling off a table. Jessica thought it would be easiest to create bumpers on either side of the wheels, so I experimented with pieces of “Ethafoam” (low-density polyethylene foam, Photo 7). I cut four narrow strips of Ethafoam, and I wrapped them in a sheet of Tyvek fabric to prevent the foam from shedding bits of plastic inside the box. I used low-melt glue to adhere the foam to the handling tray, and I attached a pair of cotton pull-tabs to either side of the tray, to help people remove it from the box. The foam bumpers not only keep the skateboard stationary, but they can function as a display mount when someone wants to see the underside of the board. You can see the final enclosure in Photos 9-10, below:
Tumblr media
Again, this was purely a preservation treatment, because the skateboard is in fairly good condition, despite minor damage. We chose not to repair this damage because it reflects the owner’s use of the skateboard, and the damage is not yet severe enough to threaten the object’s structural integrity. This simple preservation enclosure will prolong the life of the object and allow for conservation treatment in the future, if that becomes necessary. It may seem a little strange to treat this 20-year-old skateboard as though it were an ancient relic! I’ll admit, there were times when it felt a little absurd to apply my book and paper conservation skills to an object that (on the surface) looks like nothing special. If all goes well, however, the skateboard will survive for as long as the Daguerreotype plates or the 16th century parchment book... if so, the skateboard will teach future generations about late 20th century feminism and politics, queer history, punk rock, and alternative transportation!
Thank you so much for reading about our preservation activities at NYU Libraries this week, and thank you for supporting your local libraries!
Happy Preservation Week,
-Cat Stephens

As much as I'd like to, I rarely keep abreast of new music coming out. It's pretty common for me to be surprised that a band has had three new releases since I last checked in on them. But when two of my very favorite artists cover each other's songs for fun and profit, turns out I'll give it a listen as soon as humanly possible.
West Coast vs Wessex! By NOFX & Frank Turner
A good cover should do three things, it should remind you how good the original song is, it should reveal something new about it, and it should reinforce the things you love about the musician who is trying to make someone else's work into their own art. I'd say this album hits all those marks. Has there ever been a song not only lyrically in Fat Mike's wheelhouse but also perfect for that patented NOFX final-chorus-get-in-overdrive than Glory Hallelujah? Even better, the ease with which The Ballad of Me and My Friends gets translated to something that could have closed any NOFX album makes plain the kinship between the two artists and the sense of community their songs offer to the listeners who get absorbed by their music. On Frank's side, he surprisingly outpunks NOFX with his sped up take on Scavenger Type, and follows the old adage of saving the best for last with his harrowing rendition of Falling in Love. One of my favorite songs, (and one of the worst third party heartbreaks I've experienced when I realized the relationship that inspired the song had run its course).
Fat Mike and Frank Turner are certainly amongst my top 10 songwriters personally, but they are also two of my favorite cover artists. Frank Turner has probably covered more of my favorite songs than anyone else (Queen, Bruce, AND The Weakerthans? Yes please!) and NOFX seemlessly integrates covers into their canon like few other bands do. This album is no exception on either front and I thought it was pretty great. Highly recommended for all Chakas.

Hey Brian, was there any sort of LGBT community/network in the hardcore scene when you were coming up and touring?
I didn’t know many LGBT people in the ‘90s hardcore touring circuit. There was Paul from Double Entendre Records in Denver, Joshua Plague from Behead the Prophet NLSL, Nathan from boysetsfire, and a couple of the guys from Kill the Man Who Questions (their bassist Andrew would later help form Limp Wrist), but that was about it. It was much more common to find out in the ‘00s how many folks from that generation were closeted.
The queercore scene was active at the time and I remember picking up old issues of Outpunk zine to try and get acquainted with that world, but it felt like it’s own little universe and there wasn’t a lot of crossover with the hardcore scene.

I went to Damaged City this weekend and I was extremely blessed to see two sets from the band Milk, from Nagoya, Japan.
They basically sound like Minor Threat but with completely clean guitar/bass tones, which for some reason just makes the whole thing sound posi as fuck. I’ve wanted a band like this for years. It’s so sick.
The first set at the main show was great, but the second/much smaller aftershow set was absolutely insane. It’s been so long since I’ve had that much fun at a show.
God bless MILK
