It was revealed to actually be a master chess player hiding inside the robot and controlling it. This inspired the name of Amazon's Mechanical Turk, a service that provides "artificial artificial intelligence" -- essentially, low-paid freelance sweatshop work for humans to do the "intelligence" part of artificial intelligence. Technically, it's supposed to be for hiring people to do stuff like collate and label data for automated processes to use, as well as general data management tasks, but occasionally we get a scandal where it turns out that basically all of an AI process was a bunch of dudes being paid sweatshop wages in India to pretend to be a robot.
Amazon's "just walk out" technology is one particularly famous such case, where they hyped up their cool fancy AI that meant that customers could walk into their shops, register on entry, and just walk out with their shopping when they were done and the AI would analyse what they'd bought via video feed and charge them without the need for a checkout. AI, predictably, sucks at this, and what was actually happening was that checkout was being outsourced to woefully underpaid Mechanical Turk employees who were doing checkout work via video feed, saving the company money on employing checkout workers and building false hype for their AI capabilities.
