the moon always hangs low in summertime.

as a child, she used to watch the moon from the curtain the suli performed under. it was a constant when she spun and twisted in their aerial silks, a point to focus on when she walked the wire. it had always been reliable. a sign of comfort.

there is no moon in ketterdam.

well - she supposes there is, because it doesn't just disappear. inej knows this. during the summer months, it's hidden by the billboards, the buildings, the click of kaz's shoes on ketterdam's cobblestone streets.

under the peacock's care, she had no window. there had only been two in the top floor's front rooms, forbidden to the girls lest they escape. she had snuck in twice, desperate to see the moon, the world outside.

to no avail. she had chalked it up to the directions of the windows. they were facing the wrong way.

when she had finally gotten free of the peacock's care, she had stepped onto the street and realized - from the street, she would never be able to see the moon in summer. it hung too low. in winter, it stretched too far to see, a pinprick of silver hung above the deep blue skies. it would never bring the same comfort, so she stopped looking.

inej had to find comfort in other places.

there is no comfort in ketterdam either. no stability, nothing to rely on, a deep lack of love. she learned to sneak, to cut, to stab. she learned to climb onto the roof of the slat and keep looking.

the closest thing to the moon is kaz brekker.

he is - dependable. always counted on to think through situations, plan for every opportunity. every word out of his mouth has a purpose, a calculated meaning. this inej can count on. unfortunate that this is what inej can count on, but she takes what she can.

he can provide safety. this is a form of comfort, isn't it? as long as she is his spider, she has a place to stay and a reputation of her own. and kaz has never held it over her head. she stays because she needs to, then wants to, then realizes there's nowhere else to go.

besides, she's grown to like him. trust him. it takes little time for them to realize they are synched, can match each other's pace, two halves of a whole.

kaz teaches her to climb rooftops and scale walls. on one mission, she finds it. she hides in the shadows, clinging onto the balcony. kaz stands on it, looking out. she follows his gaze, looks out at the harbor.

the moon winks at her, sparkling and relaxing and consistent and there, and she looks at kaz.
