Tumblr media
Jeongguk is five when he meets Taehyung.
It is the first day of big kid school and he is terrified of not making any friends, especially now that it is recess time and all the other kids seem to have already made fast friends.
He sits near their class number on the blacktop and watches everyone else run around and play, not sure of if he would be welcomed or not. A few kids are eyeing him, but he tucks his face into his arms to hide every time their gazes meet and he hopes that for whatever reason they are staring at him, it is not meant to harm him.
He knows a few of these kids from preschool, but when he tried talking to Yugyeom earlier, he had entirely blown him off for the other kids he was already playing with. So Jeongguk had sat down and resigned himself to not making any friends this year after all.
The bell is ringing now, meaning that the first and second graders are now going to come out and play and the kindergarteners only have five minutes to line up and wait to return to class. Jeongguk stands while twisting his hands together and winces when a line of second graders burst through the classroom door to his right.
He smiles politely at them like his mother told him to do when faced with someone in a grade above him, but no one takes notice of him.
Until a boy with long, dark bangs runs out of the classroom a little later than the others and is shouting something back behind him, not looking where he is going. Jeongguk can almost see how they are going to crash if he does not step out of the way, but something tells him to stay still, to let it happen.
The older boy's shoulder clips his and they go sprawling, his shoulder blades immediately flaring up with pain as they hit the blacktop. The other boy is already pushing himself up, and apologizing profusely, eyes wide enough that Jeongguk can see them even through the curtain that is his hair. Jeongguk does not say anything as the pain only intensifies when the boy stands up, no longer touching Jeongguk anymore.
He holds his hand out for Jeongguk and Jeongguk takes it after staring at it for a few moments longer. The boy pulls him up onto his feet and brushes nonexistent dirt off him, apologizing once more until Jeongguk finally seems to snap out of his daze.
"It's okay," Jeongguk murmurs, keeping his eyes downcast. "I'm sorry for being in your way."
The boy only laughs, patting Jeongguk on the back as he starts to step away. "It's my fault, don't worry about it. I'm sorry again, but I have to go now. My friends are calling for me."
And with that, the older boy runs off, Jeongguk's back tense with each step he takes. He slowly walks back onto his class number and waits for the others in his class to line up behind him, rubbing his back as he waits for their teacher.
Yugyeom tackles him from behind and asks him with a worried look in his eyes if he is okay and if the older kid was bullying him, but Jeongguk only nods then shakes his head no. He doesn't want to talk about what happened just yet.
Tumblr media
When the last bell rings for school to be let out, Jeongguk quietly gathers his things and says goodbye to Miss Kim.
She smiles and waves him out the door, stepping out soon after him to make sure each kid is picked up. Jeongguk leans against the wall beside the open classroom door and waits for his older brother, Junghyun, to get out of classes so they can go home on the bus together, but he winces in pain as his back meets the wall. Miss Kim steps toward him and asks if he is hurt.
He shakes his head and says, "No, it's just my back."
"May I check your back, Jeonggukkie?" She asks, kneeling down so that he can easily look into her eyes if he ever looked up from his shoes.
Jeongguk bites his lip and nods, turning so that she has better access. "It's here," he says, pointing towards his shoulder blades. "It's been feeling weird since one of the big kids ran into me on accident at recess," he explains.
Miss Kim only shifts his shirt around from his collar, peeking down to stare at his tiny back. She stills though and gasps, making Jeongguk even more confused when she quickly turns him around and hugs him.
"Oh, Jeongguk, congratulations!" she cheers, pulling him up then spinning him around in a circle before she sets him neatly back down on his feet. "You met your soulmate!"
Jeongguk smiles and nods, pretending that this is the most joyous of news as his teacher continues to prattle on, but he does not understand why she congratulated him for falling on his back. Aren't you only supposed to congratulate people when they have done a good job on something? That is what his mom told him when he asked her about it last year.
(Although, she had also told him that Santa exists too and he found out a few days before Christmas that it was actually her and Papa who bought and wrapped the gifts he woke up to every Christmas morning so maybe she had lied to him about this too?)
The bell for the older kids rings then and Jeongguk grabs his backpack again once Miss Kim has quieted, smiling wide when he sees his brother near the third-grade classrooms. He goes on the tips of his toes and waves, his smile growing wider when Junghyun immediately locks onto him and waves back, quickening his pace so he can reach Jeongguk faster.
But then another face appears before him and Jeongguk takes an automatic step back when he realizes who it is.
It is the older boy from before, the one who knocked into him at recess.
His soulmate. Is that what he is to Jeongguk now?
Miss Kim looks between them and laughs, waving at the older boy. "Taehyung! Hello, how are you?"
"Hi, Miss Kim! I'm fine, how are you?" the now named older boy replies back, bouncing on the balls of his feet once he has reached them.
Jeongguk can still see his brother heading this way over to them so he tunes out the conversation and puts his backpack on, wincing when it only makes his back flare in pain again. A hand wraps around his shoulders and he looks up to be greeted by a rectangular grin as his soulmate pulls him into his side.
"Hi, Soulmate! I'm Taehyung. What's your name?" Taehyung asks, his expression friendly.
"Jeon Jeongguk," Jeongguk murmurs, his face feeling much too hot all of a sudden.
"Gukkie?" Jeongguk's brother has now reached them.
Jeongguk smiles up at Junghyun and steps away from Taehyung, bidding Miss Kim a farewell as his brother takes his backpack and slings it across his back with his own. He is just about to say goodbye to Taehyung as well when he realizes that Taehyung intends to walk with them.
"Gukkie, who's this?" Jeongguk's older brother asks, calculating Taehyung as they begin to walk away.
"Um," Jeongguk hums, pondering over what he should say exactly.
He knows soulmates are important and that their parents are soulmates, but Junghyun has not met his and Jeongguk would rather not have another fight with his brother about him losing to Jeongguk again. Not that Jeongguk thinks this is a competition or something, but Junghyun is very sensitive about a lot of things so Jeongguk is not sure what he should say exactly.
Thankfully, Taehyung speaks up for him instead, smiling wide as he holds his hand out. "I'm Taehyung! Jeonggukkie's soulmate!"
His brother does not falter in his stride nor does his smile waver, but Jeongguk can see the way something darkens in his eyes for a moment before disappearing in a flash as he takes Taehyung's outstretched hand. "Nice to meet you. I'm his big brother, Junghyun."
Jeongguk does not know why he feels like he should not interrupt this moment by speaking up right now, but once they reach the place where the buses line up and Jeongguk is turning to say goodbye to Taehyung, he falls short on what to say again.
Taehyung saves him once more by hugging him quickly and ruffling his hair, giving him a simple, "I'll see you tomorrow, Gukk-ah!"
"Yeah," Jeongguk answers a beat too late, Taehyung already lost in the crowd of children. "See you."
Tumblr media
Jeongguk is small and he does not know much about soulmates, but when he and his brother get home, he goes up to his grandmother who is reading in the living room and tells her what happened.
She smiles and asks if she can see his soul mark and he nods, turning as he lifts his shirt off and over his head. His grandmother becomes quiet then, her breath caught in her throat. Jeongguk wants to look over his shoulder and see what has her so spellbound, but he remains still once he feels the soft, cool press of her fingertips trailing a line down his back.
"Oh, Jeonggukkie," she whispers, her voice trembling. "Have you seen it yet?"
He shakes his head, looking towards the doorway when his brother comes back down the steps and pauses at the foot of the stairs. Their grandmother waves him into the room and Jeongguk squirms as Junghyun's hand joins their grandmother's own, this time trailing a line on the other side of his back.
"Wow, Gukkie, this is so cool!" Junghyun exclaims, fingers moving of their own accord now.
"What is it?" Jeongguk asks, turning his head to try and see.
His brother laughs at his poor attempt but quiets when their grandmother taps his arm lightly. She takes Jeongguk's arm with her free hand and turns him, smiling wide.
"Go into my room and use the mirror behind my door, Jeonggukkie. I think you'll like what you see," she says, still smiling when he nods and begins to walk out of the room.
He catches a few snatches of the conversation between his older brother and grandmother about what they are having for dinner, but he decides to ignore it as he walks down the hallway and pauses before his grandmother's room.
It is smaller than his bedroom, but it was an office before she moved in with them after his grandfather died so he can see why it's not as big as his at least. He remembers how quiet his grandmother was when she first moved in, how timidly everyone regarded her. He remembers how Junghyun had clung onto him one night and cried for a very long time because he had been close to their grandfather. Jeongguk was barely four and he could not remember the sound of his grandfather's laugh anymore, but he remembered everything that happened after his death. His grandmother was sad, his parents were sad and his brother was sad, but he was not. Jeongguk had not seen the point of being sad when everyone else was already so sad all the time. Wouldn't that make them even sadder than before? Is it not better to be happy for them so that they could all quickly become happy again instead?
His grandmother always smiled for him though. She was quiet, but as soon as he stepped into the room she would grin at him and he would grin back, glad that just being in the same room as her made her the teeniest bit happy again.
He opens the door and steps inside, letting it close behind him quietly. His grandmother's room is just as he remembers: a single bed, curtains open to let in light from the solitary window, her dresser that he still can't reach the top of, and the rocking chair his grandfather made for her when they got married in the very corner. But then he finds himself looking at the mirror, his skinny torso making him pause.
He knows what a soul mark is, knows that every single person is born with one but that they do not become complete until one meets their soulmate. He knows this, but he still does not know why soulmates are so important to everyone.
Jeongguk's own soul mark is actually two marks. Two lines that run parallel to each other straight down his back. They start from his shoulder blades and end at his waist, curling outwards to circle his hips. He does not know why his teacher, his grandmother, and his brother reacted the way they did, but it must have been for a good reason so he takes a deep breath and turns around.
When Jeongguk finally looks over his shoulder, he realizes that his soul mark has filled in a little more, but something about it is off. The two lines he once had are now more detailed and thicker, even a little longer he thinks. On his right side, there is an oval lying upon the line, extending out and upward so that the top of it lays on his shoulder blade.
It is beautiful, really, it is. Except, it feels off. Jeongguk doesn't know how to explain it, but the longer he studies his back, the bigger the sense of him missing something grows.
Jeongguk's soul mark looks empty.
Tumblr media
"You did do all of your homework, right hyung?"
Taehyung laughs ahead of him, swinging his backpack in one hand. "Of course, I did! I always do my homework."
Jeongguk clicks his tongue and smiles when his brother knocks his elbow into Taehyung's arm. "Gukkie hates it when you lie."
"I'm telling the truth," Taehyung shoots back, swatting at Junghyun's arm in return. "You can even check for yourself, hyung. I did my homework last night."
"Whatever you say, Tae," Junghyun laughs, looking back to smile at Jeongguk. "Gukkie, come and collect your soulmate, he's too much to handle."
Jeongguk laughs too and steps forward, taking Taehyung's hand in his own to pull him closer into his side. "Hyung, stop lying."
"I'm not lying! Why don't you believe me?" Taehyung whines, pulling on their joined hands as he leans down and rests his chin on Jeongguk's head. "I really did my homework this time!"
"Okay, okay," Jeongguk relents, grinning wide when Taehyung's pout becomes only more pronounced than a moment before. "You did your homework, I believe you, hyung."
"Gross," Junghyun comments, shooting them both finger guns before he runs up ahead to get past the school gates. "See you guys after school!"
"Bye, hyung!" Taehyung and Jeongguk both shout after him, laughing once he's out of sight.
Taehyung swings their hands between them as they continue to walk, the buzzing of chattering children only growing as they approach the front gates of the school. Jeongguk does not think much of the people who stare at their hands because Jeongguk doesn't think Taehyung is his boyfriend or anything like that. Taehyung is older than him, but he acts just as silly as Jeongguk does so he feels more like Jeongguk's brother than anything else really.
"You did do your homework though, right?" Taehyung asks once they reach the school gates.
Jeongguk nods, smiling up at the older boy. "I always do my homework, hyung."
"Good," Taehyung grins at him, ducking down to press a kiss on the crown of his head. "Get to class now. I'll see you after school and possibly with a new friend too!"
"A new friend?"
Taehyung shrugs, his rectangular grin blinding in the morning light. "There's a new kid in my class! His name's Jimin and since I wasn't here yesterday, I didn't get the chance to introduce myself. I'm hoping that he and I can be friends after I do."
"Oh," Jeongguk grins, his heart thrumming at the fact that Taehyung is always so friendly. "Good luck then, hyung. Fighting!"
Taehyung chuckles and lets go of Jeongguk's hand, prodding the younger boy forward in the direction of his second-grade classroom. "Thanks, Jeonggukkie. Now off to class with you!"
Jeongguk laughs and does as his soulmate says, turning back once to wave at him before running towards his classroom door and throwing himself into his seat just before the first bell begins to ring.
He calmly takes his materials out then and tries to calm his breathing, not knowing why there is a feeling in the pit of his stomach telling him that big things are going to happen today.
Tumblr media
After school, they meet in the usual place by the buses.
Junghyun is already there, waving at Jeongguk when he approaches and smiling wider than Jeongguk's seen him do in a long time. Jeongguk runs up to him and asks about his day as they both wait for Taehyung to arrive.
His brother is talking about the girl in his class that he has had a crush on for forever and Jeongguk coos over the details of how she asked him for a pencil today and was impressed by how many he had lying in wait in his pencil box. He ended up giving her five extra pencils and she giggled, only falling silent when their teacher told them to stop flirting.
Jeongguk is about to ask for her name again, and ask about which pencils he gave to her but is interrupted when Taehyung jumps onto his back and starts talking a mile a minute in his ear.
"Gukkie! I made a new friend! His name is Park Jimin and he's from Busan just like you and he's older than me by two months!"
"Hyung, if you keep yelling into my ear, I'm going to go deaf," Jeongguk chuckles, giving Junghyun an apologetic smile for his soulmate interrupting his own story.
Taehyung ruffles his hair and lets go, stepping back to give Jeongguk some space. "Sorry, but here! I want you two to meet."
Jeongguk rubs his shoulder and smiles when Junghyun takes his backpack and slings it across his back, waving at someone behind Jeongguk. "Hello, I'm Junghyun, Jeonggukkie's older brother."
"Nice to meet you," a pleasant voice says and Jeongguk turns to see a short boy with a round face, dark hair, and darker eyes waving back at his brother. "I'm Jimin."
The boy is cute, without a doubt, but Jeongguk does not know why that really matters anyway. He holds his hand out and puts on his most welcoming smile while Taehyung beams in between them.
"I'm Jeongguk, TaeTae-hyung's soulmate!" Jeongguk greets him, his smile faltering when Jimin takes his outstretched hand.
A feeling that he vaguely remembers flits across his back and makes him stumble back, his eyes blown wide. Jimin's expression mirrors his, a hand coming to grip his own shoulder. Taehyung stares between them, brows raised in question when Jeongguk takes another step back, pain now flaring down his back. Junghyun steps forward and steadies him quickly, not asking what the problem is until Jimin turns around and lifts his shirt up.
"Is it there?" Jimin asks, his shoulders hunched in on himself.
Taehyung traces the lines on Jimin's back with a single fingertip, mouth parted wide. Jeongguk knows that it looks exactly like the mark on Taehyung's back, a pair of wings that cover his entire back, but he doesn't think it'll match his own. Junghyun hikes Jeongguk's own shirt up and traces an oval on the left side of Jeongguk's back where he knows there shouldn't be one. Taehyung pulls down Jimin's shirt soon after that and whispers something to him, keeping their heads low.
"How does it look like?" Jeongguk asks his brother, looking over his shoulder to meet his gaze.
Junghyun smiles and lets his shirt fall back down. "You'll see it when we get home, but I think we should talk about it with Mom and Papa first. Okay?"
Jeongguk looks back towards Jimin and Taehyung, heart jumping into his throat at the sight of Taehyung wiping away what appears to be tears off Jimin's face. He does not know why Jimin is crying or why Taehyung is the one comforting him right now, but Jeongguk doesn't know if Jimin is actually his soulmate or not because he thought everyone only got one and that was it.
Either way, it hurts to look at them so he turns away and tugs Junghyun towards their bus when he realizes that it is about to leave, yelling a goodbye over his shoulder where Taehyung is still standing with a weeping Jimin.
Tumblr media
Jeongguk has already been staring at his back for a few hours now.
There is a new oval along the other line on his back, but it is lighter than the one on his right side, the one he got when he first met Taehyung. The oval on the left mirrors the other on the right exactly, making his soul mark look symmetrical now, but it is still off.
It is not the same as Taehyung's or Jimin's and it makes him queasy knowing that he might have two soulmates instead of one because his soul mark does not match with either of theirs.
His grandmother is unusually quiet as she makes dinner, hunched over the stove with Junghyun beside her. Jeongguk is still too short to reach the stove, so no one is willing to teach him how to cook yet, but if they hand him a bowl and tell him to mix a few ingredients together, he can definitely do that.
As soon as his parents walk through the front door, Jeongguk throws himself at them and breaks down crying.
Junghyun steps out of the room as the adults crowd around him and Jeongguk does not know why that particular fact stands out to him, but it does, so it must be important.
Between sobs, he explains what happened today at school and the next day, he is taken to the doctor's office. He has never liked going there because Dr. Song always smells too clean, but he is also scared about what Dr. Song will say about his mark not matching either Taehyung's or Jimin's. His mother goes with him and his father had offered to go as well, but he had reluctantly left for work anyway because they do need a stable income after all.
Junghyun is at school with Taehyung — and by extension, Jimin — but he had asked his older brother to say nothing about where he was. He knows that when he goes back tomorrow, Taehyung will badger with question after question and he will hesitantly give him the answers he is looking for, but that is tomorrow. And today, Jeongguk is waiting in a room with his mom for Dr. Song to come and see them.
His feet dangle over the chair in the center of the room, the paper that always covers these kinds of seats crackling with each move he makes. His mother has her hands twisted together in that way Jeongguk hates for no other reason than that it means his mother is stressed and scared at the same time. Junghyun told him it means she is anxious, but Jeongguk does not know what that word means yet so he sticks to scared and stressed instead.
The door opens then and in walks Dr. Song. He is old and short, with wispy hair that is beginning to turn grey, but when he smiles, his eyes smile too and Jeongguk thinks that is pretty cool. Despite him being a doctor who smells weird, his smile is nice and it always helps to calm Jeongguk down, especially when he comes for his flu shot every year.
His mother stands to greet him and quickly explains the situation with a hushed voice. Jeongguk bites his lip and looks down at his feet, nodding when Dr. Song asks if it is okay for him to lift his shirt up and take a peek at his soul mark. Cool air greets his skin and Jeongguk fights back a shiver when Dr. Song's gentle fingers trace the lines and shapes that make up his soul mark.
It still does not feel right, his soul mark. It looks fuller and he feels balanced on the inside, but he cannot shake off the feeling of it being empty. Of course, it is not as strong as it was before, but it is still there, pressing down on him like some invisible weight that he can barely hold up.
Dr. Song lets his shirt fall down soon after and pats Jeongguk's shoulder as he comes around to the other side of the chair so that they are at eye level with one another. "So, your soul mark doesn't look like that of your soulmates, Jeonggukkie?"
"No," Jeongguk shakes his head, biting his lip before he continues, "they both have wings."
Jeongguk's mother steps up behind him then and Jeongguk leans back, stopping once his shoulder meets her side. She wraps an arm around him as she begins talking to Dr. Song again, asking if this is normal and if something is wrong. Jeongguk does not like the way her voice sounds when she asks this, but he does not have enough time to worry over it because Dr. Song holds up his hand and smiles at them both in that way that Jeongguk has always found calming.
"There's nothing wrong, Mrs. Jeon," Dr. Song says, his voice soothing to Jeongguk's ears. "There are multiple accounts of people having more than one soulmate. The most common number of soulmates for people in these kinds of situations to have is two; however, the biggest count yet is twelve."
His mother lets out a sigh of relief, leaning down quickly to press a kiss on the crown of Jeongguk's head. "That's such great news, Doctor. Is it possible to know how many Jeonggukkie may have?"
Dr. Song is still smiling as he answers, but the shake of his head disappoints Jeongguk more than he would like to admit. "Unfortunately, no. The only way Jeongguk will know when he has met the last of his soulmates is when his soul mark fills in completely. He has met two of his own already though and he is only seven, so rest assured that your son will be happy, Mrs. Jeon."
Jeongguk looks up to meet his mother's gaze and frowns when he realizes that she is smiling, but she is also crying too. "Mom?"
She shakes her head and wipes her eyes, meeting Dr. Song's gaze again. "Thank you, Dr. Song. I was really worried that something was wrong, so thank you."
Dr. Song shakes his head and pats Jeongguk's head. "Your son is healthy and things like this are uncommon, but there's nothing wrong. Just make sure that he continues as he is and that you are there for him every step of the way. He'll be just fine."
He is seven and doesn't quite understand everything that he should, but Jeongguk is a quick learner and on that day he learns that he is okay. There is nothing wrong with him just because his soul mark does not match with Taehyung and Jimin's.
Yet.
Tumblr media
Things go shockingly smooth after that.
He has two soulmates who he cares for a lot, but he also has two best friends and an older brother who love him a lot in return too.
School is school and lots of the kids in Jeongguk's grade are in awe of the fact that he knows so many older kids, but as they get older, Jeongguk realizes that does not matter much to him. He does not want the other kids to like him simply because of who he is friends with, he wants them to like him because of him.
Jeongguk knows that he is just a young child, but with the things that he knows and the stuff he has already been put through, he feels older. Not by a lot, but just enough for it to count.
The rest of Jeongguk's elementary days are spent ignoring the itch in the back of his mind that he could meet his next soulmate at any moment. He is young and he feels that he should not be focusing on that at the moment though because he is doing his best to get to know Jimin.
Jimin is kind, undeniably kind, and he is sweet. He carries Jeongguk's backpack around and always manages to slip a snack into it before school so Jeongguk has something extra waiting for him when lunchtime comes around. Except, Jimin does not have the same soul mark as Taehyung either. He only has one wing, the left.
Jeongguk likes Jimin. He is different than Taehyung, but when his soulmates team up to do something, Jeongguk fears for everyone's lives. He is younger than them though, only by two years, but sometimes Jeongguk thinks they will get tired of him eventually and start hanging out with someone who is in their grade level or above.
And maybe it is ridiculous of him to think so, but Jeongguk cannot help it half the time. They are his soulmates, yes, but more importantly, they are his best friends and he does not want to lose them.
Tumblr media
Junghyun leaves for middle school before any of the rest of them do and Jeongguk starts to see him less and less as the years begin to go by. He is still his older brother though and they still only have a hallway standing between their rooms after all.
So he sees less of his brother, but he does see more of Taehyung and Jimin at least, which is always a plus.
They are not in middle school with him like he had hoped for, but he and Yugyeom get the chance to become closer and through Yugyeom, he meets Mingyu and Seokmin. Seokmin is very pretty and he is always smiling and soon enough, Jeongguk finds himself crushing on him.
Despite the guilt he begins to harbor for not crushing on his soulmates instead, Jimin tells him that it is fine because he has never really crushed on Jeongguk either. They are all so young and Taehyung has always said that they should enjoy themselves in the now and worry about the consequences later. Jeongguk does not know if that is the kind of advice they should be taking, but he is much too embarrassed to go to his parents about it and he could talk with his grandmother about it, but lately, he feels guilty whenever he sees her. She is always so tired and just talking with Jeongguk and Junghyun or making sure they do their homework takes a lot out of her. Now he and his brother make dinner and always make sure the food is soft enough for their grandmother to eat.
Without any other advice headed their way, they decide to take it anyway since Jeongguk is only twelve and he does not really want to date anyone right now.
Jeongguk indulges his crush on Seokmin for a while. It does not really grow into more than anything other than that and when Seokmin introduces Minghao to their group near the end of eighth grade, proclaiming him his soulmate, Jeongguk is happy for him and pretty relieved for himself too.
Jimin and Taehyung tease him for it, but when Jeongguk walks into Taehyung's room on one Saturday afternoon and finds them kissing, it feels like something cold has pierced right through Jeongguk's heart. He does not show it, and he does not let his soulmates give him any pity for it either.
He wants them to be happy, even if they are happy without him. They are still young, after all.
Tumblr media
During his very first week of high school in P.E class, a boy in Junghyun's year trips into Jeongguk, sending them both sprawling.
Jeongguk has since forgotten the feeling of anticipation curling low in his belly whenever he happens to touch someone new, wondering if this person is his soulmate also. It has been two years since he finally began to relax every time he met a new person, but when he falls, a different kind of pain flares across his back.
The boy topples on him at first, but then he is quickly pushing himself up, brushing himself off as he stumbles over an apology, flustered and stuttering. Jeongguk blinks up at him in shock, not knowing if he should be the one to say something about it or not, but his gaze catches on the very short shorts the boy is wearing and feels like he completely understands that part in Spongebob Squarepants where all the little Spongebobs in his head are running around screaming as they set fire to all his memory files.
"Wow," Jeongguk murmurs, unable to look away from the vast amount of pale skin in front of him, "thighs."
The boy flushes and holds his hand out for Jeongguk to take, smiling shyly. Jeongguk takes it and stands, his back still in pain, but the feeling is dulling now that they are touching again. Jeongguk can see their gym teachers off to the side, glaring at them both for not returning to their positions yet, but this is important.
Jeongguk already has two soulmates, but he just met his third and he will not let him go until he has his name.
As if he is able to read Jeongguk's mind, the boy grins and lets go of his hand. His dimples flash, the sight of them nearly knocking all the breath in Jeongguk's lungs out, and twists his fingers together.
"I'm Kim Namjoon."
Jeongguk finally gets the sense to smile back, probably looking like an idiot right now, but he doesn't care. "Jeon Jeongguk. Nice to meet you."
Namjoon flushes, his gaze flickering towards his feet before he meets Jeongguk's eyes. "Likewise, Soulmate."
Tumblr media
Namjoon catches him after class in the locker room and pushes a scrap of paper into his hands that contains his number.
Jeongguk texts him during lunch and does not get a response until after school when he is by the front gates with Taehyung, Jimin, and Junghyun. Yugyeom has already been picked up by his father so Jeongguk is now just waiting for Namjoon to show up so he can introduce everyone to each other.
(Even though he is nervous about whether Namjoon is his last soulmate or not, Jeongguk has not personally checked his soul mark yet, but Taehyung had taken a peek down his shirt during lunch and shook his head at him so that's probably an answer enough.)
Junghyun keeps swinging his car keys around his finger, grinning to himself. Jeongguk would be smiling too if he had a new car waiting for him in the student parking lot like his brother does. He can smile for other reasons though.
His phone chimes and Jeongguk checks the notification, laughing when Jimin rests his chin on his shoulder to see it as well.
 Namjoon: look to your left!
Jeongguk and Jimin both look in the direction Namjoon told Jeongguk to and find him waving at them, a large grin spread across his face. There is another boy with him, a tad bit shorter and a lot lankier than Jeongguk ever thought a person could be. Which is saying something, considering Jeongguk has seen Taehyung shoot right up like a bean sprout for almost all of his life, growing skinnier by the day. Jeongguk waves back at him and smiles, motioning for them to come forward.
"That's him," Jeongguk tells the three boys beside him, grinning when he looks over to see Namjoon and his friend already making their way towards them. "That's Namjoon."
Namjoon hugs him when he gets close enough and Jeongguk's brain starts screaming about Namjoon's cologne, but he squashes that down and smiles as genuinely as he can. Namjoon is soft in his arms though, something Jeongguk did not expect but is not surprised by either. He pulls back first, wondering if Namjoon being reluctant to let go is just in his imagination or not.
Jeongguk gestures towards the others behind him, grabbing Taehyung and Jimin by their arms to pull them forward. "Hi. Um, I feel that you should know this now so that you can make any decision you want to make right now, but this is Jimin-hyung and Taehyung, my other soulmates."
Namjoon only shrugs and holds his hand out for Jeongguk's soulmates to shake with a calm smile on his face. "Cool. Nice to meet you guys, I'm Namjoon."
"You're not weirded out?" Jeongguk cannot help but ask, one brow raised as Taehyung and Jimin shake Namjoon's hand.
"Nah," Namjoon shakes his hand, tugging on the arm of the lanky boy beside him. "Not when I have another soulmate too. This is Hoseok. Hobi, this is Jeongguk-ssi."
Hoseok smiles at him, the curves of his cheeks making Jeongguk want to touch his face, but he refrains and takes the hand Hoseok holds out to him instead. "Nice to meet y—oh! Well, I guess that helps solve a few issues, doesn't it?"
"What does?" Jimin asks, stepping forward. "Gukkie?"
"Oh, hi! I'm Hoseok and you're Taehyung, right?" Hoseok asks, holding his hand out to Jimin now.
Jimin chuckles and takes it, stilling right beside a wide-eyed Jeongguk when their palms meet. "Jimin, actually. Um, TaeTae, could you check my back, please? And Junghyun-hyung, mind looking at Gukkie's?"
"Joonie, can you check mine too?" Hoseok asks, his smile not faltering even once.
Taehyung stares at him in confusion for a short moment before understanding lights his expression and he rushes forward, taking a peek down Jimin's shirt. "Oh. Wow, it looks like mine, Jiminnie. Congrats!"
"Same here, Hobi. Yours is a full set of wings like mine now," Namjoon says as he steps back, patting Hoseok's back. "Congratulations are definitely in order."
Jeongguk does not happen to catch what happens next because he is much too busy focusing on Junghyun who is looking down his shirt, not saying anything as the others chatter. He does not know what he is expecting really, but when Junghyun steps back and smooths his shirt down, he turns anxiously to meet his gaze.
Junghyun shakes his head and Jeongguk tries to pretend like he is not upset.
He should be happy that he happened to meet two of his newest soulmates in one single day, but his mark still isn't complete.
Jeongguk has four soulmates now and he is still no closer to finding his last soulmate yet.
Tumblr media
When they get home, Jeongguk doesn't realize that they have arrived until Junghyun pokes his arm to get his attention.
Jeongguk is not sure about anything that he is feeling right now, but he knows he is going to go up to his room as soon as they step inside and spend hours with his back to the mirror hanging on his closet door. Junghyun knows this as well as Jeongguk does and that is probably why he is being so careful right now.
"Gukkie-yah," Junghyun murmurs, his palm resting on Jeongguk's cheek, "do you want to talk about it?"
"I don't know," Jeongguk responds, blinking away tears when they suddenly spring to his eyes. "I'm sorry."
"What are you sorry for? You haven't done anything wrong," Junghyun replies steadily, wiping at Jeongguk's eyes before any tears have the chance to spill down his face. "Meeting your soulmates shouldn't be something that you're ashamed of, Jeonggukkie. Take it from someone who hasn't met theirs yet."
Jeongguk does not know what possesses him to ask, but the words are already past his lips before he even gets the chance to stop them. "What does it feel like?"
Junghyun blinks at him, confusion marring his features.
Jeongguk takes a deep breath and readies himself to clarify, hoping with all his might that he isn't overstepping some invisible line. "What does not meeting your soulmate yet while someone close to you does feel like? Does it make you hate me?"
"Jeonggukkie, I could never hate you," Junghyun says without missing a beat, cupping Jeongguk's face with both his hands now. "You're my baby brother and it would take a lot more than you having a dozen soulmates for me to ever even think of hating you in the first place."
He sighs then, his expression morphing with a pinch of sadness at the edges. "I won't lie and say I'm completely fine whenever you meet a new soulmate of yours, but my happiness for you never lets the bad parts ever hold any weight. You do have soulmates, Jeonggukkie, but you don't have all of them so maybe you already know this whenever other people meet theirs. It sucks not having your own soulmate yet, but happiness is always at the forefront for me when you meet yours."
Jeongguk sniffs and closes his eyes, allowing his brother's words to wash over him. He sighs and wipes his eyes, letting them open again once he finally knows what he wants to say.
"Thank you, hyung."
Junghyun smiles and lets go of his face, Jeongguk already missing the warmth of his palms. "Anytime, Gukkie-yah."
Tumblr media
Junghyun tells Jeongguk all he knows about his newest soulmates and Jeongguk soon figures out for himself that Namjoon is kind and incredibly smart, even for a senior, while Hoseok is the type of guy who would smile as he stole your lunch.
Jeongguk thinks they are pretty cool and laid back though, especially Hoseok.
Namjoon is pretty dorky and always strives to keep his above 4.0 GPA steady. He is usually mumbling something or other under his breath that Jeongguk can barely every understand, but he has never once found it weird.
Hoseok is kind and caring and very soft. He is open about a lot of things and sometimes he will reek of weed whenever they all meet up on the weekends. Jeongguk doesn't mind the smell, but he does wish Hoseok would do it a little less.
They are in their senior year of high school though and Jeongguk is not sure how he is supposed to get to know his soulmates in the span of less than a year. They do have the rest of their lives to get to know each other so maybe Jeongguk should not worry so much like Taehyung has been telling him not to all these years. When it comes to soulmates, an infinite amount of possibilities are meant to happen and worrying over all of them will drive Jeongguk crazy with time.
As the year progresses though, Jeongguk finds that he really likes what he has learned about Namjoon and Hoseok so far. He also finds that it might not be the same kind of like he feels for Jimin and more like the type that he feels for Taehyung more often than not. He tries not to dwell on it much when he sees Hoseok holding hands with Namjoon and Taehyung holding Jimin's because he has never made his own feelings known and he is not sure he is supposed to do that now when they have already paired themselves off.
It usually gives him a headache and a churning feeling in his guts that he will not name for fear of messing up something that was already going so well without him.
But then one night, Taehyung comes over and kisses Jeongguk full on the mouth, making Jeongguk take pause as he tries to figure out what just happened. Taehyung lets him take his time, but he is also apologetic about the kiss and explains that Jimin had encouraged it when Taehyung had brought it up to him.
Which is all fine and dandy except for the fact that Jeongguk does not like Jimin like that and if he and Taehyung are going to be together as well, shouldn't Jimin be a part of it? Better yet, shouldn't all of Jeongguk's soulmates be a part of it?
The following weekend, Jeongguk brings it up to the other four and Namjoon smiles at him as he explains that no, not everyone needs to be included if they do not wish to be. Soulmates do not always end up together and with the five of them, that scenario is much more likely than it would be with others, but it all depends on how everyone feels.
Jimin smiles at him though and explains that he loves Taehyung and he loves Jeongguk, but it is not the same kind of love and probably never will be. Jeongguk tries to hide how relieved he is to hear that, but Jimin has known him for a long time and he grins in a reassuring way at the youngest, holding his hand out for him to take.
Jeongguk slides his palm against Jimin's and smiles back, something lodging itself in his throat as Taehyung takes his other hand and presses a kiss to his knuckles. Namjoon and Hoseok take each other's hands and watch, smiling just as wide and just as sincerely as the rest, but Jeongguk cannot shake the feeling that they want to take up their hands as well no matter how hard he tries.
He guesses all will be solved with time though so he resolves himself to wait until he can take their hands as easily as Taehyung took his.

The end of the school year is upon them before they have even had the chance to catch their breath.
Summer this year is hot and Jeongguk feels like he has sweat out buckets by the end of each school day.
As the last day of school approaches them though, Jeongguk finds that he is not ready to let go of his soulmates or his brother just yet.
Junghyun is going to study abroad for a year, wanting to see the world before he decides on what specific school he wants to go to. He will be off in the states, surviving off his less than average English and translators whenever he can come by them. Jeongguk does not know how well his brother will do there, but he will support him regardless.
Namjoon and Hoseok are both going to Seoul University. It is not far, not really, but it is more about the fact that he will no longer be able to see them every day like he has grown accustomed to. Jeongguk knows that Jimin and Taehyung feel the same way, that they too are going to miss all three boys just as much as Jeongguk will. None of them have really discussed what is going to happen after the eldest two go off to college, but the days are slowly counting down and Jeongguk feels like he is running out of time.
Which is exactly why he paints a smile on his face on the final day of school, going through the motions of it all. He attends the graduation ceremony and cheers for his brother and soulmates, standing up and recording it when their names are called out and they step up on the stage. Taehyung and Jimin are there too, hands interlocked as they cheer alongside him while Jeongguk's grandmother clutches his arm and sits gingerly back in her seat between him and his parents.
There is pride filling him to the brim and a feeling of satisfaction that would be hard to get rid of so Jeongguk simply lets it be as he sits back down, pressing the red button on his screen to end the recording.
Taehyung takes his hand once Namjoon has returned to his seat and the three of them exchange smiles, not knowing who is faking their happiness or not.
For the moment, Jeongguk does not really care as long as he has these two by his side for the year to come.
Tumblr media
Taehyung and Jimin do stay by his side the next school year, but when their birthdays are upon them, Jeongguk bites his tongue as Taehyung asks him if they can put a pause on their relationship until he is of age.
Jeongguk understands his point and he was meaning to ask the same thing himself, but he cannot help the bitter feeling that festers in his chest whenever he sees Jimin and Taehyung holding hands around school. He does not want to be jealous, especially not of his own soulmates, and sometimes he feels guilty for it. So much so that he begins to avoid them, even going so far as to decline rides home from Jimin and instead hitching one from Yugyeom and his mother.
It goes on like that for close to a month before Jimin snags him by the arm and drags him to where Taehyung is at, leaving them both to discuss things.
Taehyung is confused and hurt and Jeongguk feels awful for how he has been handling things so they both decide to do better for each other from then on. Jimin is grinning from ear to ear when they return to him, laughing like everything is okay now.
Because it is until Jeongguk remembers that he only has a few months left with his soulmates before they too leave high school as well.
When their graduation does come to pass, Jeongguk handles it infinitely times better than he did the year before with his brother and older soulmates. Namjoon and Hoseok come down for the ceremony and Jeongguk laughs as Hoseok screams at the top of his lungs when Jimin's name is called. Jeongguk's grandmother is by his side again, but she is weaker and older now and Jeongguk is afraid for her.
He kisses Taehyung goodbye on the last day of summer vacation and welcomes his junior year with open arms, finding himself immersed in schoolwork with most of his friend group from middle school. Minghao always has a senior on his arm named Junhui who pesters him constantly, but Seokmin just smiles at them and pretends like nothing is wrong even though Jeongguk and all their friends can tell that something most definitely is. He will not get into it because it is none of his business and Jeongguk should not be the one to tell them to get their act together either.
Except, it does become his business when Seokmin kisses him at a party and Minghao gives him the cold shoulder because of it. Jeongguk tries to ignore the drama, doing his best to focus on school and his grades, but it is hard to pretend like everything is okay when Minghao is glaring at him from across their lunch table every day. He takes a week's worth of glaring before he decides to hide out in the art classes instead, bringing his own lunch to school now. Their friend group is now divided by the Seokmin and Jeongguk side and the Minghao and Junhui side, which Jeongguk finds ridiculous and all kinds of petty, but it is not like anyone listens to him anymore so what does it matter really?
All of that comes to a complete stop when his grandmother dies.
Everyone attends the funeral. It is quiet and depressive, making it difficult for Jeongguk not to collapse in on himself until there is nothing left.
Jeongguk is surrounded by his soulmates and he has not let go of his brother ever since he arrived. He doesn't know what to do with himself and when he turns to see that all his friends from school are there, he cannot help the tears that fall from his eyes.
His grandmother has always been important to him and she had been worried about him at the beginning of the school year now that he was "alone". She had made an effort to make sure that they talked every day after school and that he always ate dinner, no matter what. She had always been there for him and now she is gone. She is gone and he doesn't know what he should do now.
The only thing that keeps him from breaking down completely is the love and support that his parents, brother, friends, and his soulmates give to him. They help him get through the rest of his junior year and once summer comes, Jeongguk is never alone. He is always out and about, always going somewhere, but during the night when all he does is lie in bed as he stares up at his ceiling, he cannot help the sadness that still lingers in his heart.
His grandmother would not have wanted him to be sad. She had always despised his sadness, but he knows she would not blame him for crying every time he has thought of her so far either. She will always want him happy and Jeongguk, not knowing in what direction he should take his life, decides that he is going to honor her by being what she wanted him to be: happy.
He is going to follow his heart and attend school where his soulmates are. He will apply with an undecided major and maybe once he is away from the house, away from everything that reminds him of her, he will finally know what it is that he wants to do.
It's decided then. Jeongguk is going to go to Seoul University once he graduates.
Tumblr media
Being in uni is nothing like what Jeongguk expected.
His senior year had felt like a tiny blip on his radar. He had not done much, nor participated in many things either. Dances and the like held no interest for him, but he had asked Seokmin to be his date to prom anyway because when he heard that Minghao was bringing Junhui, he felt so enraged for his friend that he made sure to make Seokmin's big ask the biggest ask anyone in high school had ever seen.
Prom had gone well and he had a lot of fun with Seokmin, but he felt so much better by the end of the night when Junhui came marching up to Seokmin with Minghao one step behind him and kissed Seokmin full on the mouth. Minghao had oggled them until Junhui roped him in and suddenly Jeongguk was the first-hand witness to their three-way make out session.
The smile on Seokmin's face ever since then has been worth it though and the three-way relationship that became a result of prom gave Jeongguk a lot of ideas for him and his own soulmates as well.
As soon as he had become of legal age, he moved into the apartment Namjoon and Hoseok rented and decided to kiss them both that very same night. Who cares if he had classes to prepare for the next day? Nothing was better than being sandwiched between the older men as they took turns kissing him.
Although, the day that Jimin and Taehyung move in might top that because being kissed by three other men while his hair is being played with was an experience that quickly becomes the norm for him.
Having all five of them in the apartment makes many things easier and when Jeongguk catches Hoseok and Jimin finally kissing one afternoon when neither of them has classes or dance practice to run off to, Jeongguk's heart swells with happiness. He cannot help jumping on Jimin's back and leaning over his shoulder to kiss Hoseok on the nose before he back hugs Jimin and wanders back into the kitchen where Taehyung is making lunch and Namjoon is sitting on the counter reading a book and doing his best to stay out of the way.
Jeongguk's classes are basic and most bore him to death, but he still has no idea what major he would like to declare.
Namjoon is majoring in linguistics and has a minor in music. Hoseok is majoring in nursing, but always makes time for his dance crew and recitals despite the hectic schedule the nurse program gives him. Jimin's major is simply dance while Taehyung's is art, specifically from the Renaissance Era. All four of them are usually busy doing something relating back to their majors and hobbies while Jeongguk is out trying to survive his 101 classes and landing a job that is close by since he still does not know how to drive.
He might be interested in music theory after he listens to one of Namjoon's songs, but it is not until Taehyung develops a hobby for photography that Jeongguk realizes what it is that he wants to do.
He declares his major a few days after that and Namjoon decides to throw him a party in celebration. Not many people show up since they do have neighbors they need to be considerate of, but it is enough and it gives Jeongguk the chance to meet more of his soulmates' friends.
He meets Taemin, a dancer in Jimin's class that likes to pinch Jimin's sides often, and then he meets Minho, a friend of Taehyung's that he met in an acting class and who happens to be Taemin's soulmate. Jeongguk leaves the four of them to wander about and say hello to his own friends, making sure everyone is comfortable and feels welcome.
In the kitchen, he finds Namjoon and Hoseok caught in a deep discussion with a short man he can only guess is Yoongi. Jeongguk's older soulmates talk about him often, always praising him for his amazing skill with music, but Jeongguk has never seen a photo of him so he doesn't know what he looks like.
Catlike eyes, a pursed mouth, and a weak chin all seem like they might make up a Yoongi though, especially now that he is able to catch snippets of their conversation and realizes they are talking about music.
Jeongguk clears his throat loudly and smiles when Hoseok jumps a foot into the air, throwing himself behind Yoongi as Namjoon turns to face him.
"Oh, hey, Jeonggukkie!" Namjoon greets him, pulling him closer until Jeongguk is tucked under his arm. "I think it's time you finally met the great Min Yoongi."
"Tch. Joonie, don't be out telling lies," Yoongi pouts, frowning as he holds his hand out to Jeongguk. "Hey, kid. I'm Yoongi."
Jeongguk smiles and nods, taking Yoongi's hand with a response on the tip of his tongue that immediately dies out once his back flares up in pain. Yoongi looks spooked and grimaces as Hoseok quickly looks down his shirt and whoops loudly enough for everyone in the apartment to hear. Namjoon peeks down Jeongguk's shirt and although he is frowning, Namjoon nods when Jeongguk turns his head to meet his gaze.
He has met another soulmate.
Tumblr media
Jeongguk's first year of university goes swimmingly well after he meets Yoongi.
When summer comes, they visit home for a few weeks then return back to Seoul. They find a bigger apartment in July and are settled in by the middle of August.
No one is surprised when Yoongi decides to accept their offer of moving in, the eldest claiming that it is simply so he doesn't have to pay an arm and a leg for rent anymore. No one believes him, but they also will not push it because Yoongi is Jeongguk's newest soulmate and it has to be hard for him to adjust to his soulmate and his soulmate's soulmates as well.
The first semester goes fine for all of them. Yoongi is no longer in school and is currently doing underground rap battles where he usually beats the competition, surprising no one. Hoseok is taking more hours at the hospital now that he is working on his vocational full time, and his dance crew mourns for him. That is, until Hoseok introduces Jimin and, by extension, Taemin to them and suddenly Jimin's schedule is jam packed with more dance practices. Taehyung and Namjoon have schedules that are laxer than the other three and Jeongguk spends time with them the most.
Once the second semester comes around though, Jeongguk finds himself with a dilemma.
His psychology professor is hot. The kind of hot that should be plastered on billboards, ads, and shopping screens all over the world. Which usually would not be what makes Jeongguk want to get closer to any of his professors, but for some reason, with Kim Seokjin it does.
Seokjin is actually a student himself as well, but the university was short on staff and needed someone to fill in the position so he had accepted. Jeongguk does not know whether he should drop out or not because of this, but after looking at the class registry forms again, he decides that his silly little crush should not keep him from getting the most out of the education he is paying for.
And so the semester continues as such. Jeongguk confesses about his crush around Valentine's and Yoongi laughs at him for falling for the man everyone and their mother wanted to sleep with back when Yoongi was still in school. Hoseok and Namjoon exchange glances, but say nothing on the matter until Jeongguk confronts them about it later.
That is how Jeongguk learns that Kim Seokjin is actually Yoongi's old roommate and his ex-boyfriend as well.
Yoongi does not talk about it often, but he had confided in Namjoon and Hoseok one night when he was in his final year and drunk, unwilling to go back to the apartment that he shared with his ex. Namjoon says that Jeongguk should not let on that he knows, to pretend he does not understand why Yoongi clams up every time Seokjin is brought up and while Jeongguk does not like it, he heeds Namjoon's warning and keeps what he knows to himself.
After that, it is difficult to focus in class. Most of what Jeongguk can think of when he stares at his professor as he is reciting his lecture is how Yoongi used to date him, how Yoongi used to lean up and kiss those plush lips. How Yoongi loved this man, used to live with him and now loves Jeongguk, lives with Jeongguk and his soulmates.
Strange does not begin to cover how Jeongguk feels about it all, but it ends up humanizing Seokjin more than he originally planned to. Now his crush doesn't feel so silly anymore. It feels dangerous.
Jeongguk has only just gotten another oval his back, right near the base of his spine. His soul mark is still incomplete, but when Yoongi came a lot changed. Jeongguk feels guilty for even having this dumb crush on his ex in the first place. The fact that Jeongguk knows things he is not even supposed to does not make matters any better. If anything, they are worse.
But he focuses and tries his best in the class, interacting with Seokjin as little as possible in the hopes of not feeling like complete shit for the way that he feels whenever he is around.
The end of the semester looms ahead and Jeongguk is actively looking forward to it as he is any other time. Maybe he will stop feeling so weird once he is not taking a class that Seokjin teaches. Maybe he will finally be able to ask Yoongi himself about what happened between the two of them.
Finals quickly take over and Jeongguk studies like there is no tomorrow. He barely eats and sleeps in between classes now, but the majority of his time is dedicated to studying as much material as he can for the important classes he can not afford to fail. The night before his psychology final, Yoongi forcibly wrestles his textbook away from him and wrangles Taehyung into the fight of their lives: putting a struggling Jeongguk to bed.
It works though and Jeongguk sleeps soundly with Yoongi in his arms and Taehyung spooning him from behind, with Jimin somehow finding his way into the bed during the night.
He wakes up early that morning and Yoongi makes them all breakfast before he leaves for work. He makes Namjoon promise to pick Jeongguk up from class once his exam is over and Jeongguk bids the eldest goodbye with a kiss that he hopes says a lot more than what Jeongguk's tired brain can put together right now.
The exam goes smoothly and Jeongguk takes his time with it, still managing to finish up with a lot of time to spare as he double-checks his answers. Even that does not take too long to do and Jeongguk takes to doodling angel wings on his hand as he waits for Seokjin to call time.
When his professor finally does, Jeongguk takes the scantrons the girl behind him gives him and adds his own to the top of the stack before handing it off to the boy seated in front of him. Seokjin collects them and smiles as he starts to wave everyone out, some people already out the door before he has even uttered a word.
"It was nice having you all this semester. Grades should be up by the end of the week and you'll have a week after that to contact me in case you have questions about the grade you received. Happy summer everyone," Seokjin says, the bags under his eyes barely noticeable as he grins.
Jeongguk waits until most of the class has emptied out before he packs his things away and walks up to Seokjin's desk. There is a small line of people standing before him, waiting their turn to talk to him so Jeongguk decides to text Namjoon about being a while. It is to his relief that no one decides to stand behind him and anyone else who is not in line has emptied out of the classroom. Namjoon responds to his text almost immediately and Jeongguk looks up as the door opens again, revealing a tired-looking Namjoon who strides purposefully towards him.
He can feel eyes on his back, but Jeongguk merely steps up as the line moves and waits to see what Namjoon does. Namjoon takes a seat near the front of the class and turns until he's able to face Jeongguk, giving him a thumbs up when Jeongguk quirks a brow up at him. Jeongguk smiles and shakes his head, stepping forward once more as the person in front of him steps up to Seokjin's desk.
Swinging his backpack around, Jeongguk manages to take out the gift he had prepared and feels his heartbeat spike when he realizes that his turn is next. To be fair, he has always given his teachers gifts on the last day of class, but he feels awfully nervous now with Seokjin seated only a few inches away from him. He carefully tunes out whatever the girl in front of him is saying to Seokjin, but it is hard to ignore the lull of his voice. Jeongguk can already feel his face heating up and is sure that he resembles a tomato at this point, but when he looks towards Namjoon, the encouraging nod that he receives helps him calm down a little.
Jeongguk takes a deep breath as the girl steps away and exits, his heart jumping into his throat when Seokjin's eyes land on him.
"Ah, Jeongguk-ssi. May I help you with something?" Seokjin asks when it looks like Jeongguk won't be the one to speak up first.
With trembling hands, Jeongguk lays the gift on the desk between them, acutely aware that Namjoon is watching this all unfold. He remains silent as Seokjin take the gift, holding it in his palm as if he is trying to determine its weight. Namjoon snickers behind him and Jeongguk shoots him a glare over his shoulder before he turns back to Seokjin and offers him a timid smile.
Seokjin is grinning like he just won the lottery. "Thank you, Jeongguk-ssi. I'll be sure to open it after I have input the grades."
Jeongguk begins to speak before he can think to stop himself, his face flaming. "You can open it now if you'd like."
"But why would I accept a bribe so easily?" Seokjin asks, chuckling under his breath when Jeongguk's face feels even hotter. "It was a pleasure having you in my class this semester. Too bad I won't be teaching again. I would have liked seeing you once more."
"You're not going to teach anymore?" Jeongguk asks, losing some of the nervous feelings in his gut. "Either way, I don't think you'd see more of me anyway. I'm not a psych major."
Seokjin smiles, eyes flitting towards Namjoon before he focuses again on Jeongguk. "Ah, that's too bad. Still, I'm glad I had this opportunity to meet you. Thank you for the gift again. Have a great summer."
"It's no problem," Jeongguk manages to smile back at him and holds his hand out for Seokjin to shake. "I hope your summer is pleasant."
What happens next is a bit of a blur but Jeongguk still remembers the sharpest pain he has ever experienced striking through him at the exact moment Seokjin took his hand. Namjoon had suddenly been there, asking him questions that Jeongguk barely managed to answer and Seokjin's face was pale.
"Check my back, please?" Jeongguk remembers asking, Namjoon's face still too close to his own.
Namjoon had done what he asked and ran a hand over his lower back, the right side feeling much too tender for Jeongguk's tastes. Seokjin had sat up and turned as he took off his shirt to reveal his back.
His soul mark was the same that Jeongguk's soulmates had on their backs as well.
Angel wings.
Tumblr media
After that, Jeongguk asks Seokjin out to dinner as Namjoon holds him up, face crumpled with worry.
Jeongguk gives him his number when Seokjin decides that he wants to think about it first and then lets Namjoon lead the way back to their apartment, Seokjin's pale face all that he can remember afterward. It is strange knowing his newest soulmate was once his teacher because once Seokjin actually gives him a response, it is only a few days after summer break has started and grades have been finalized.
Summer is staring them in the face and he should be busy with preparations for when their families come over, but Jeongguk finds himself arranging a dinner so his soulmates can formally meet Seokjin instead. Maybe by next summer Seokjin will be living with them as well and his family will join all of theirs, but there are a lot of obstacles in the way of that which Jeongguk needs to get over first.
He is not sure yet how to tell Yoongi that his ex is his soulmate too, but Jeongguk supposes that he will get to that when it comes. That is a problem for future Jeongguk after all.
Namjoon does not say anything about what happened, but Jeongguk knows he is itching to lay it all out simply because when it comes to secrets, he is the worst. Jeongguk is surprised he has held off as long as he has actually.
As he plans the dinner though, he tries his best to not think about his soul mark. He has failed at it so far, but no harm in trying though, right?
It would be hard for almost anybody to walk around with an incomplete soul mark on their back. Jeongguk has looked at it in detail for a few hours when he did not have work to rush off to and then decides to show everyone else. Hoseok is the first to touch his mark, his nimble fingers trailing all six of the ovals on his back and then Taehyung joins him and before Jeongguk knows it, his soulmates have gathered around him with at least one hand on his back at all times. They do not ask about who his new soulmate is, but that is only because Jeongguk beats them to it by explaining that he wants them all to meet him at dinner later this week. His soulmates agree immediately and Jeongguk smiles, feeling lighter knowing that they are there for him.
The two lines that run down his back are thicker and the longest they have ever been and Jeongguk knows what the finished project should look like, but his soul mark still feels empty to him. He wonders if maybe he does have another soulmate to find, but something in the back of his mind tells him no. A niggling feeling that is embedded in his very soul, something he cannot explain quite right, but it is unwavering and so Jeongguk holds onto that thought even though his incomplete soul mark should be the only evidence he needs to prove it wrong.
He and Seokjin text each other over the next couple days, Jeongguk's crush growing with each passing day as he realizes just how chaotic Seokjin truly is. Seokjin is funny, intelligent, handsome, and thoughtful. Jeongguk can see why Yoongi fell for him in the first place and with that thought, he decides to swallow his guilt and bites his nails as the dinner approaches day by day.
Soon enough, Jeongguk finds himself at a restaurant nearby with five of his soulmates around him as he waits for the sixth to arrive. Jeongguk had set up the reservations and had gotten the large table to fit them all, so all Seokjin has to do is give his name and then he will be led right to them. At the moment, Jeongguk is tapping his fingertips across his thigh, nerves building up in his chest until it feels like he cannot stay still even if he tried.
"Hey, Gukkie, chill. We're pretty early so there's no need to worry," Taehyung tells him, his rectangular grin spreading his lips wide. "Deep breaths, babe."
Jeongguk nods and then nearly falls out of his chair when his phone vibrates with a new notification. Once he has managed to extract it from the pocket of his pants, Jeongguk checks the screen to find that Seokjin has just arrived and is heading inside to meet him.
"He's here," Jeongguk manages to get out, eyes roaming around the table to look at his soulmates. "Please remember that I have no power in who my soulmate gets to be and that I don't favor one of you over the others at all."
While they do appear to be confused by his choice of words, Jeongguk is relieved when all five of his soulmates nod their heads and then look behind him as two people approach their table near the center of the restaurant. Jeongguk stands and turns to face Seokjin and their waiter, fidgeting with his hands when he catches sight of Seokjin's puzzled expression.
To their waiter, Jeongguk says, "We'll need a moment to decide on drinks, but can you leave the menus on the table, please? Thank you."
The waiter nods and very quickly deposits seven menus on their table, scurrying away when no one has said anything. Jeongguk stiffens up once their waiter has left and decides that explaining to Seokjin first about why there are five more people than expected joining them for their dinner will be the easiest route to take right now.
"Before you say anything," Jeongguk starts with, cutting off whatever Seokjin was going to say, "I want to you to know the reason why these guys are here is because they are my soulmates too."
Seokjin blinks at him, unsure of what to say so Jeongguk nods his head and continues, doing his best to recall what he had planned before.
"I thought it best for all of you to meet each other formally before anything between us could be pursued. I want you to know that I'm literally bringing all of my cards to the table and that I hope you can accept them in case you decide to bring your own," Jeongguk finishes explaining, frowning when he thinks of the possible ways Seokjin could react. "If you think it's too weird or too much for you, that's fine, I guess. We can just be friends or pretend like we don't each other if that's easier for you."
"Gukk-ah, I wouldn't want to pretend like we don't know each other. We're soulmates and that means I'm here to accept you for any weird or unexpected things you might spring upon me," Seokjin murmurs once Jeongguk has finished saying what he needs to, a barely there smile on his face as he looks behind Jeongguk towards the table full of Jeongguk's favorite people. "Thank you for putting this all together. I'm excited to get to know everyone, but, uh..."
Seokjin is still looking past him and Jeongguk knows who exactly he might be looking at so he nods when Seokjin raises a brow at him.
"Yoongi-yah," Seokjin says over Jeongguk's shoulder, his expression carefully blank. "A moment, please?"
Jeongguk listens to the elder as he rises from the table and approaches them, pausing in front of Jeongguk to stare at him first, his eyes wide and mouth set into a frown. Jeongguk winces and fidgets with his hands again, looking at his feet now.
"Sorry, hyung," Jeongguk says quietly enough that Yoongi could pretend he didn't hear him in the first place.
Yoongi shakes his head and quickly hugs him, talking low into his ear so the others cannot hear. "Not your fault. I can't blame you for this, Gukkie-yah."
He steps back then and follows after Seokjin, leaving Jeongguk to stare at their backs as they walk away. Jeongguk turns and sits back in his seat, feeling small as he meets the gaze of the other four present.
"Do you think they'll try to kill each other?" Jeongguk asks, uncaring of the pout on his lips.
Namjoon looks like he is about to say yes, but his mouth snaps shut when Hoseok elbows him in the side and offers Jeongguk a reassuring smile instead.
"Nah," Hoseok says, his bright smile already making Jeongguk feel a little better about this situation. "Yoongi-hyung told me he was still in love with his ex and the only reason they broke up was because they weren't each other's soulmates, so this is probably Christmas come early for him."
Jeongguk, not feeling convinced, looks towards Taehyung who is smiling at him the same way Hoseok is. "Don't sweat it, Jeonggukkie. Hyung wouldn't kill your new soulmate. They'll probably come back holding hands because that's how Yoongi-hyung solves all his problems when he's mad. You know that."
Jimin pipes up then, leaning into Taehyung's side as he grins at Jeongguk too. "Aside from that though, let me ask what we're all thinking: a teacher, Jeongguk-ah? Isn't that a little much, even for you?"
"It isn't like it's my fault the universe decided I am to be a soulmate slut, hyung," Jeongguk mumbles, crossing his arms over his chest when Jimin's face turns pink. "I don't have a say in this."
"Okay, firstly don't call yourself that. It makes us all uncomfortable every time you insult yourself," Jimin says, cutting off whatever an indignant Namjoon was going to spit out. "Secondly, you do have a say in this. You had a say in you and me and we both agreed it wasn't going to be something like that between us. You have that same choice to make with Seokjin too."
Jeongguk sighs and rests his elbow on the table, supporting his head with the heel of his palm. "You're right, hyung. I'm sorry."
Jimin nods like that's that and turns back to Taehyung as he picks up a menu, already discussing what he is going to order. Hoseok shakes his head at Jimin from across the table and pulls up his own menu as well, covering his face with it as he peruses through the pages. Jeongguk is then left with Namjoon who has not stopped staring at him since he sat down.
"Yes, hyung?" Jeongguk asks when Namjoon still hasn't said anything.
Namjoon startles and shakes himself out of his stupor, offering Jeongguk a timid smile when he continues to stare back at him unimpressed. "Sorry. Um, I just wanted to say that despite any history Yoongi-hyung and Seokjin-ssi have, I know neither of them is going to be upset or angry with you for anything that happens after this. Hyung let me listen to a song he wrote about his childhood with Seokjin-ssi a while ago and I could immediately tell that he had been in love with him for a long time and I don't think that ever went away. You shouldn't worry so much, Jeonggukkie. Everything is definitely going to work out in the end."
"I know that you're right, hyung — that you all are — but it's hard to know for sure and you already know how anxious little things can make me. Just imagine how I'm feeling about this, a really big and important thing like this!" Jeongguk exclaims, feeling on the side of hysterical when Namjoon only continues to smile at him. "I think I'm freaking out."
But Namjoon only shakes his head and takes Jeongguk's hand, smiling like the universe personally told him a secret that others can only dare to dream about. "Deep breaths, Gukkie. I promise you, things are going to turn out okay."
Jeongguk opens his mouth to say something in response, but the words die in his throat when he realizes that everyone else has gone quiet and are now staring behind him. He turns to find that Taehyung was right.
Yoongi and Seokjin are back and they are holding hands. Seokjin is grinning with excitement as he waves to the entire table and introduces himself. Jimin takes it upon himself to introduce everyone when it looks like Jeongguk won't be able to do it and makes the tension at the table disappear somehow. Hoseok joins his soulmate not too soon after and it comes as a shock to Jeongguk when Seokjin laughs at one of Hoseok's awful dad jokes. Jeongguk can barely remember that he has to breathe as Yoongi lets go of Seokjin's hand and walks back to his seat beside Taehyung, pausing when he passes Jeongguk to ruffle his hair fondly with a reassuring smile on his face.
Jeongguk feels featherlight now and the unease in his chest disappears almost instantly as he turns back to the table at large while Seokjin walks to the empty seat beside Namjoon. He feels giddy and cannot quite stop smiling, but it is okay somehow. Something in him is repeating Namjoon's earlier sentiment in his head, telling him with no room to argue that things are going to be just fine after all.
Seokjin has just sat down at the table, shaking his head and smiling like he cannot believe what is going on as Jimin teases Hoseok for his awful joke and it is at that exact moment when something clicks into place for Jeongguk.
His back does not flare with pain like it had all the other times his soul mark had been added on to it. This time it feels like a stream of cool water is traveling down his back, calming and centering him at the same time. It is smooth and fulfilling and otherworldly all at the same time.
Taehyung faces Seokjin to tell him something from across the table and Jeongguk comes back to, knowing without having to look that he finally his wings. The same wings that decorate all their backs, proclaiming them his soulmates.
Seokjin really was his last soulmate, but it took all seven of them together to complete him. All seven with no exceptions.
Jeongguk is just relieved that he can fly with the others now so he waits until they come back to the apartment to lift up his shirt and show off his complete soul mark. His soulmates crowd around him and touch his back, marveling at it even though the same wings decorate their own backs as well, but he does not mind. He cannot stop smiling and when Namjoon asks him if he is okay, Jeongguk nods without having to think about it and looks over his shoulder to find all his soulmates staring right back.
He has never felt better.
Tumblr media
With six soulmates of his own comes a lot of sex.
Jeongguk finds that it is different with all of them and that he could never tire of it (and probably never will).
He can remember his firsts all too well and it always makes him hot and bothered, but he supposes that right now, with everyone watching him undress, is a good time to become hot and bothered. So Jeongguk closes his eyes and lets the memories wash over him.
Taehyung has always had big hands, but it did not really register in Jeongguk's head just how big his hands really were until they were all over him. Taehyung was definitely handsy at the best of times and he loves sharing physical affection with those that he cares about, but when it comes to sex, Jeongguk never expected to feel so small pressed against his first soulmate. He had crumbled away in Taehyung's capable hands and felt like the whines he had made were punched out of him when Taehyung took his nipple between his teeth and pulled on it as he opened him up on three fingers. Once Taehyung's cock had slid into him, the elder had set up a pace and stuck to it, only slowing when Jeongguk asked and always asked for confirmation before he tried something. Sex was sweet with him and it was all Jeongguk could hope for when he had thought of all the different ways he could lose his virginity.
Of course, he and Jimin have never had sex, but he can recall all the times one of them has watched the other have sex. Jeongguk is especially fond of the way Jimin plays with his hair when he becomes a little too overwhelmed with the way things are shaping out to be and had even tried kissing him once before he realized it did nothing for either of them.
Namjoon is big. There is pretty much no other way to physically describe him than that and everything about Namjoon is big too, even down to his dick. Of course, he is also soft too and when Jeongguk sat on his lap and gyrated his hips down, Namjoon had given him little encouragements as he grabbed his waist and helped him move in the best way possible. Namjoon had stripped them of their clothes slowly enough to drive Jeongguk crazy and by the time Namjoon was three fingers into him, Jeongguk was a mewling mess. His heart had hammered in his throat when he felt the head of Namjoon's cock at his rim, but when Namjoon slowly worked himself in, Jeongguk's mind had gone startlingly quiet once he had bottomed out. The sex was completely soft after that and Jeongguk cried as Namjoon held his face while he fucked him.
It came as no surprise for Jeongguk to learn that Hoseok is sadistic even in bed. His smile blinds almost everyone to this and while Jeongguk thought he had a good idea of how Hoseok operates after watching Jimin fuck him into the mattress, he had been proven wrong as Hoseok turned over to face him while Jimin redressed himself and practically ripped off Jeongguk's clothes. Jeongguk had cried within two minutes of Hoseok getting his hands on him and Hoseok had only smiled and slowed down as he asked for his color. Jeongguk had given him a green and Hoseok kept at it, raking his nails down Jeongguk's chest and back as he got him onto all fours then ran his tongue from Jeongguk's rim to his taint. Jeongguk was in pain for half the time he was under Hoseok, but it was a good kind of pain and even after Hoseok had fucked him seven ways to Sunday, Jeongguk nearly screamed as he came hard enough to see stars.
Yoongi's way of having sex was much simpler. Jeongguk did a lot the work, but that was really because Yoongi had gotten home later than usual and was deadbeat tired but had trouble falling asleep. So Jeongguk straddled his waist on the bed and rubbed against him until he was hard. He then took off his shorts and stretched himself out, pulling Yoongi's sweatpants down to his knees once he was ready. He did wait until Yoongi gripped his hips before he sat himself down on the elder's cock, but after that, it was slow and plenty sensual. Jeongguk had ridden Yoongi until they both came and then the elder stretched his limbs out and fell asleep with his pants bunched at his knees. Jeongguk had laughed himself sick at the sight and quickly cleaned up while his ass tingled with a familiar sore feeling.
Things with Seokjin did not escalate until a few months after they had all moved into the new apartment Seokjin's father had helped them get. By that time, Yoongi and he were back together and Jeongguk had been itching to try the cock that made Yoongi wince every time he sat down. Of course, he also wanted to be intimate with the newest of his soulmates, but Jeongguk had quickly discovered that he was, in fact, a soulmate slut in every sense of the word. Seokjin had manhandled him into the bed and worked four fingers into him as he degraded him, asking for Jeongguk's color every few minutes. Jeongguk had supplied a multitude of greens and curses, wondering why Seokjin insisted on four fingers instead of the usual three Jeongguk was used to until he caught sight of Seokjin's cock and almost choked on the word green. Seokjin took his time working himself into Jeongguk, but by the time he had settled, Jeongguk was so far gone it was a wonder he hadn't died from pure bliss until then. Jeongguk whined as he clung to the elder as he held him up against the wall and pounded into him. It went without saying that Jeongguk slept soundly that night, but couldn't sit down for the next two days.
Since then, Jeongguk has figured out that everyone has more or less slept with everyone else at some point and it should be easy to bring them all together now for a night of sex. It has been a year spent in their new and bigger apartment so Jeongguk doesn't understand how it has taken them this long, but he won't complain either.
He finishes taking off his clothes and stands there bare while his soulmates look on, so many sets of eyes glued on him. It is unnerving being the only naked person in a room filled with clothed bodies, he will admit, but these are his soulmates, his best friends, and his lovers so Jeongguk does his best not to think too much on it.
They all follow his example soon after and he is not alone anymore. Seokjin leads them towards the mattresses they pushed together earlier and falls on top it, moving when another of Jeongguk's soulmates joins him. Jeongguk takes a step forward and looks down at them, thinking over everything that has led up to this point and finding only a bubble of happiness, love, and lust embedded in his chest. He is with his favorite people in the world and they are all waiting for him to join them before they go any further. Suddenly, Jeongguk does not have to think of anything then, much too enraptured with the people he loves to care or worry about anything.
He falls into their mess of limbs as easily as he fell in love with them.
Tumblr media
"Hey, so I met my soulmate," Junghyun rings him up one day to say.
Jeongguk almost drops the mug in his hands. "You met your soulmate?"
Everyone at the kitchen table freezes to look up at him, all wondering who he is on the phone with.
"Yeah, I ran into them yesterday when I was leaving for work," his brother replies, something ultimately hesitant in his voice. "I don't know how to tell them I'm already married, Jeonggukkie."
"Well, hyung," Jeongguk tries, setting the mug down on the table, "you have to be honest. They'll understand, I'm sure. I mean, having a soulmate doesn't always mean you fall in love with them, you know?"
"Like you and Jimin?"
"Exactly like Jimin and I, hyung!" Jeongguk nods, trying his best to not let on how desperately he's grasping at straws right now. "Just be honest and wherever it leads, it'll be in a place where you're both happy. It took me a while to understand that, but I have all my soulmates, hyung, and I couldn't be happier. You'll be okay."
Junghyun is quiet on his side of the line for one very long moment, a moment that Jeongguk is too scared to break himself. He bites his lip and waits, growing the teeniest bit nervous when he realizes that all of his soulmates are now looking at him with something other than confusion in their eyes — even Jimin. The silence between Jeongguk and his brother grows, but then Junghyun sighs into the receiver and groans, sounding more like himself already.
"You're right, Jeonggukkie. What would I do without you?"
Jeongguk laughs, the tension at their table breaking almost immediately as Taehyung tries to swipe Namjoon's toast and is reprimanded by Seokjin instead. "I don't know, hyung. I really don't."
"Thanks, Gukkie-yah. I'll call you later, yeah? Love you!" Junghyun chimes, sounding calmer now than when they began their conversation.
"Sure, hyung. Bye, I love you too!"
Soon enough, there is a click on the other end of the line and Jeongguk sets his phone down on the table, turning towards his soulmates to answer the questions he knows they are dying to ask.
"Who was that?" Taehyung asks with his mouth full of food.
Jeongguk smiles when Jimin slaps Taehyung's arm and reminds him to not talk with food in his mouth and watches as his first soulmate swallows it down, an indignant expression on his face. "Junghyun-hyung."
"He met his soulmate?" Jimin focuses on him, leaning forward to stare more intently at Jeongguk from across the table.
"Yeah, he said he met them yesterday after work."
Namjoon turns in his seat beside him and quirks one brow up in question. "Isn't he married?"
"Yep," Jeongguk replies, picking up his fork and knife to cut into the pancakes Seokjin made for them.
"Doesn't that worry you?" Hoseok chimes in then, his usual happy expression gone from his face at that moment.
Jeongguk tilts his head and bites his lip, giving it his attention as he looks over the bits of information Junghyun gave him. He then compares that to what he already knows about his brother and his current life, a knowing feeling going through him once he does.
He picks up a piece of pancake with his fork and shakes his head to answer Hoseok, smiling at his plate. "Not really."
Yoongi sits up beside Taehyung and leans his elbows on the table as he stares at Jeongguk. "Are you sure you're not worried?"
"I'm sure," Jeongguk replies without missing a beat.
"Do you think it'll end well for him?" Seokjin asks from one end of the table, frowning as he cuts into his own pancake without looking at his plate to see what he is doing. "Will he be happy in the end?"
Jeongguk shrugs and smiles, popping the piece of pancake into his mouth before he swallows and gives them all an answer he didn't have to think that hard about. "It ended well for me, for all of us really. I know he'll be happy no matter what happens. After all, that's what soulmates are about."
And well, no one can really argue against that answer, can they?

Even though the hybrid is saying all of those nice sounding things to calm him down, Jimin can’t help but still feel terrible at the situation. No one has even shown him kindness for stealing before. Hell, people will kick him out of their stores simply for being inside. He knows he can’t blame them, he looks homeless, he is homeless, and he’s got no job or any source of income. How things are right now, people can’t help but be cynical and judgmental. That’s how you protect yourself, he gets it more than anyone, but it still hurts. It’s not his fault his parents left him at a poor orphanage. It’s not his fault no one ever adopted him and it’s not his fault that he aged and had to be kicked out.
Everything leading up to his present situation is just a series of unfortunate events, and it’s not fair. Jimin is a good person. He’d never think of stealing if he wasn’t starving everyday. He doesn’t understand why on earth he was born if this was going to be his life, just being a burden to everyone. To his parents, to the nuns at the orphanage, to the people he steals from. To this perfectly nice hybrid... employee.
He wordlessly walks to where the other led him on wobbly legs, still feeling the fall on his body and the extreme discomfort on his cheek. He stops to look up the stairway when he’s standing in front of it, taking a shaky breath. “Y-yeah.” He mumbles as he props his hand on the wall, stepping up the first stair and holding himself still. He’s usually in some state of malnutrition and dehydration, but right now he especially feels it. He feels light-headed and shaky, and going up the stairs feels like a particularly difficult task.
