Had a chance to go through two #classicalbums last night, from #TomMoon's #1000RecordingsToHearBeforeYouDie. Both bookening #punkrock, but spelling out and defining its limits and dream soul life. Hadn't heard #TheVelvetUnderground's #TheVelvetUndergroundAndNico in a hot minute. It's almost uncanny how that record set the pace, tone, and bar for like all alterative rock to come. There's the two chord #drone of #TheStooges or #Spacemen3 - the wanton Middle Eastern #trance modalities from Lou Reed's guitar and John Cale's viola. There's the #glamour, #fashion, and #sexuality of Nico's songs - esp. 'All Tomorrow's Parties' and 'Femme Fatale'. Rock 'n roll as lycanthropic tea party. #Bauhaus' #InTheFlatField is better than i remember it. Less death rock than steely #postpunk, a la early #SiouxsieAndTheBanshees, #TheCure, #JoyDivision, and the underrated #CrimeAndTheCitySolution. Daniel Ash's guitars simmer and scratch like a speed freak coming off of a 3 day bender, while Peter Murphy's vocals are surprisingly robust and muscular - not fey at all. Both have absolutely stunning #graphicdesign, as well, and outstanding production, esp.
